'And Felix,' it says, 'put them off, having more exact knowledge of the things concerning the Way, saying:'
52:2
'When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will determine the matter concerning you.'
52:3
And he commanded the centurion that Paul should be kept in custody, yet have some liberty, and that none of his own people should be forbidden to minister to him or to come to him.
52:4
See how great an examination there is: first by many, then also over a long time, so that no one might say that the tribunal was carried away by force.
52:5
For when the orator had made mention of Lysias, saying that he had taken him away by force, he opportunely brought in the matters concerning Felix, and says:
52:6
'And Felix put them off, having more exact knowledge of the things concerning...'
52:7
這就是說,他是有意拖延的;
that is, he deliberately postponed it;
52:8
not because he needed to learn anything, but because he wished to fend off the Jews.
52:9
為了那些人的緣故,他不肯釋放保羅;
He was unwilling to release him, on account of those men;
52:10
而另一方面,要懲罰保羅又是不可能的;
and again, to punish him was not possible;
52:11
Wherefore also he defers, saying:
52:12
'When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will determine the matter concerning you.'
52:13
And he commanded the centurion that Paul should be kept in custody, yet have some liberty, and that none of his own people should be forbidden to minister to him or to come to him.
52:14
Thus he too released him from the charges.
52:15
Why then does he detain him after acquitting him? Either to gratify those men, or also because he was still expecting to receive money.
52:16
因此他就打發人去請保羅來;
Wherefore also he sends for Paul;
52:17
and that it was for this reason he sent for him, the writer makes plain to us, adding and saying:
52:18
'And after certain days, Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, and sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ Jesus.'
52:19
'And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and the judgment to come, Felix became terrified, and answered:'
52:20
'and when I have a convenient season, I will send for thee.'
52:21
at the same time also hoping that money would be given him by Paul, so that he might release him.
52:22
Wherefore also, sending for him the more frequently, he conversed with him.
52:23
See how closely the things written cleave to the truth.
52:24
He sent for him continually, not because he admired him, nor because he approved of what was said, nor because he wished to believe, but why? Expecting, it says, that money would be given him.
52:25
你留意看,這裡作者並不掩飾那審判官的心思;
Observe how here he does not conceal the judge's disposition;
52:26
and yet, if he had condemned him, he would not have done this, nor would he have been willing to hear from a condemned and wicked man.
52:27
And behold Paul, though conversing with a ruler, saying none of those things by which one might expect to soothe his soul, but rather such things as make him afraid and shake his mind.
52:28
For as he reasoned, it says, of righteousness and temperance and the judgment to come.
52:29
Felix became terrified.
52:30
So great was the force of Paul's words that they even struck fear into the governor.
52:31
And this man receives a successor, yet leaves him a prisoner—though he ought not to have done so, but rather to have brought the matter to an end; instead, to gratify those men, he left him behind.
52:32
But these men so pressed upon him as to petition him again; yet against none of the apostles had they so set themselves, but having once made their assault, they would afterward withdraw.
52:33
So providentially does he withdraw from Jerusalem, having such wild beasts to deal with; and yet they demand that he be brought back there again to be judged.
52:34
然而在此事上,神也仍舊安排一切,不容那長官任意而行;
But here too God henceforth ordered matters, not permitting the governor;
52:35
for it was likely that he, having but newly entered upon his office, should also wish to show favour.
52:36
但等到他們下來以後,就更加無恥、更加猛烈地提出控告;
But when they had come down, they thereupon made their accusations shamelessly and more vehemently;
52:37
and being unable to convict him on the grounds of the Law, they turned again to their accustomed practice and stirred up the charges concerning Caesar—the very thing they had done also in the case of Christ.
52:38
For that Paul defended himself concerning offences against Caesar was plain from this; wherefore, interpreting this very point, he adds:
52:39
'And after two years were fulfilled, Felix received a successor, Porcius Festus.'
52:40
'And Felix, wishing to lay up a favour with the Jews, left Paul bound.'
52:41
'Now when Festus had entered upon his province, after three days he went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem.'
52:42
'And the chief priests and the principal men of the Jews laid information before him against Paul, and besought him, asking a favour of him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying an ambush to kill him on the way.'
52:43
'Festus therefore answered that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself was about to depart thither shortly.'
52:44
'Let those therefore, saith he, who among you are able, go down with me, and if there be anything in this man, let them accuse him.'
52:45
'And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down to Caesarea, and on the morrow sat on the judgment-seat and commanded Paul to be brought.'
52:46
'And when he was come, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood round about, bringing against Paul many and grievous charges which they could not prove; while he defended himself, saying, Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I sinned in anything.'
52:47
'But Festus, wishing to lay up a favour with the Jews, answered Paul and said:'
52:48
'Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?' See how he too gratifies the Jews—a whole populace and a city.
52:49
為此,他也運用人手的兵器,再次使保羅心生畏懼;
For this reason he too strikes fear into him again, employing a human weapon;
52:50
'I stand at Caesar's judgment-seat, where I ought to be judged.'
52:51
'To the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou also very well knowest.'
52:52
'For if I am a wrongdoer, and have committed anything worthy of death, I refuse not to die;'
52:53
'but if there is none of those things whereof these accuse me, no man can deliver me up to them as a favour.'
52:54
But one might say here:
52:55
And for what reason, having heard, 'Thou must bear witness of the things concerning me at Rome also,' did he act thus as though disbelieving? God forbid! Rather, it was because he believed exceedingly.
52:56
It would rather have been the mark of one tempting God, to presume upon that declaration, and to cast himself into ten thousand dangers, and to say:
52:57
'Let us see whether God is able to deliver me even thus.'
52:58
但保羅並不這樣行,反倒盡上自己一切本分,把全部的事都交託給神;
But Paul does not do this; rather, he contributes everything on his own part, committing the whole to God;
52:59
and gently he also touches upon the governor, defending himself in this manner:
52:60
for he all but says this:
52:61
'But if I do no wrong, why dost thou deliver me up? No man, saith he, can give me up as a favour.'
52:62
He cast him into fear, so that he might not, even willingly, give him up as a favour, but might have his appeal as a defence toward those men.
52:63
'Then Festus, having conferred with the council, answered:'
52:64
'Thou hast appealed unto Caesar; unto Caesar shalt thou go.'
52:65
See, he communicates the matter to Agrippa, so that yet others might again become hearers—both the king, and the army, and Bernice.
52:66
'Now when certain days had passed, Agrippa the king and Bernice came to Caesarea to salute Festus.'
52:67
'And as they were tarrying there many days, Festus laid Paul's case before the king, saying:'
52:68
'There is a certain man left a prisoner by Felix;'
52:69
'concerning whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews laid information, asking for judgment against him.'
52:70
'To whom I answered, that it is not the custom of the Romans to give up any man as a favour unto destruction, before the accused have his accusers face to face, and have opportunity of defence concerning the charge.'
52:71
'When therefore they had come together here, I made no delay, but on the next day sat on the judgment-seat and commanded the man to be brought.'
52:72
'Concerning whom the accusers stood up, but brought no charge of such things as I supposed;'
52:73
'but they had certain questions against him about their own religion, and about a certain Jesus who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.'
52:74
'And being perplexed how to inquire concerning this, I asked whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.'
52:75
'But when Paul had appealed to be kept for the decision of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept, until I should send him to Caesar.'
52:76
'And Agrippa said unto Festus:'
52:77
'I also could wish to hear the man myself.'
52:78
'And he saith, To-morrow thou shalt hear him.'
52:79
See again the accusation of the Jews, made not by Paul, but by the governor.
52:80
'The chief priests, saith he, and the elders of the Jews laid information, asking for judgment against him.'
52:81
See also what answer he makes, to their shame:
52:82
'that it is not the custom of the Romans to give up any man as a favour unto destruction;'
52:83
that is, before granting him opportunity to speak, it is impossible simply to give him up as a favour.
52:84
他既照著慣例行了,就查不出什麼控罪的把柄;
And having acted according to custom, he found no ground of accusation;
52:85
wherefore he is also at a loss concerning this.
52:86
And this is plain from what he adds, saying:
52:87
'And being perplexed how to inquire concerning these things—'
52:88
Thus he spoke, cloaking his own fault.
52:89
And while the one cloaks it, Agrippa desires to see him.
52:90
你看那些官長總是設法擺脫猶太人的糾纏,又屢次被迫作出違背公義的事,並且尋找藉口拖延;
See how the rulers are ever repelling the Jewish importunity, and are often compelled to act contrary to justice, and seek out pretexts for delay;
52:91
for indeed he deferred it, not in ignorance, but knowingly.
52:92
但亞基帕不但沒有推辭,反倒願意聽;
But Agrippa not only does not repel it, but even wishes to hear;
52:93
which is also worthy of wonder—whence he came into the desire of
52:94
wishing to see a man who, though unjustly, was nevertheless under accusation.
52:95
Thus this too was of God's providence.
52:96
Wherefore his wife also listens with him, and is not absent from the hearing.
52:97
And she listens not merely so, but with much honour.
52:98
她的心願竟是如此之切;
So great was the desire she had;
52:99
for she would not, unless she had desired it, have sought to hear, nor would he have made the woman a partaker of the hearing, had he not conceived great things concerning him.
52:100
But to me it seems that she too longed for this.
52:101
And observe how Paul at once discourses not merely about faith, nor only about the remission of sins, but also about the things that must be done.
52:102
But let us examine from the beginning the things that have been said.
52:103
'For the present,' he says, 'go thy way.'
52:104
'and when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.'
52:105
Hearing such things, he expected to receive money from him.
52:106
And this was not the only dreadful thing, but also that, though he had conversed with him, he did not release him; but when he was at the end of his term of office, he left him a prisoner, that he might do the Jews a favor.
52:107
so that he was enamored not only of money, but also of glory.
52:108
How dost thou seek money, O wretch, from a man who preaches the very opposite? And that he did not receive it, is plain from the fact that he left him bound; for he would have loosed him, had he received it.
52:109
This man was discoursing about self-control, while that one expected to receive money from him even as he discoursed of these things.
52:110
他又不敢開口求討;
And to ask he did not dare;
52:111
因為邪惡本是如此——膽怯,且對一切心存猜疑;
for such is wickedness—cowardly, and suspecting everything;
52:112
so that with good reason he did them a favor, seeing he had held such great authority there.
52:113
'Now when Festus had come into the province,'
52:114
'the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul,' it says.
52:115
At once, and at the very outset, the priests came forward, who would not have shrunk even from coming to Caesarea, had he not gone up first—seeing that they approach him the moment he arrives.
52:116
'And having gone down to Caesarea, he tarried ten days.'
52:117
Perhaps, I think, so as to give opportunity to those who wished to destroy him.
52:118
But Paul was in the prison.
52:119
'And they besought him,' it says, 'that he would send for him to Jerusalem.'
52:120
And why did they ask a favor, if he deserves to die? But thus even to Festus the plot became manifest, so that in discoursing he said:
52:121
'Men who are here present, ye behold this man, about whom the whole multitude of the Jews have made suit to me.'
52:122
For by the word 'made suit' he indicates the meaning, 'asking a favor against him.'
52:123
So that already they wished to bring him to a verdict of condemnation, fearing the tongue of Paul.
52:124
Why are ye afraid? Why do ye press so hard? For this is what the phrase 'that he should be kept' makes plain.
52:125
For does he flee? 'Let those,' he says, 'who among you are able, accuse him.'
52:126
Again accusers at Caesarea, and again Paul is led forth.
52:127
'And on the morrow, having sat,' it says, 'upon the judgment-seat.'
52:128
且看:他一來,就坐在審判臺上;
Observe: as soon as he came, he sat upon the judgment-seat;
52:129
so did they push him on with such eagerness, so do they press him forward.
52:130
那麼,只要他還未曾領教過猶太人、也未嘗過他們所給的尊榮,他的答覆便是正直的;
So long, then, as he had not yet had experience of the Jews and of the honor paid him by them, he answered rightly;
52:131
但等他到了耶路撒冷,這人也照樣討他們的喜歡;
but when he came to be in Jerusalem, this man also does them a favor;
52:132
yet he does not simply grant the favor, but does this with deceit.
52:133
'Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged concerning these things before me?' As if he said:
52:134
'It is not to them that I give thee up, but I myself will be judge.'
52:135
他說這話,並使自己作了主宰,好用這尊榮使保羅心軟;
And he says this, and makes himself lord of the matter, that by the honor he might soften him;
52:136
since, if there had been a verdict, it would have seemed quite shameless to wish to carry off thither one who had here been convicted of nothing.
52:137
But Paul did not say, 'I am not willing,' lest he should make the judge yet more vehement; but again he speaks boldly, and says:
52:138
'I stand at Caesar's judgment-seat, where I ought to be judged.'
52:139
且看他如何以理駁倒他們;
And observe how he reasons them down;
52:140
for by the things wherein he defends himself he all but says this:
52:141
「他們早已把我趕出,還以為這樣就是定我的罪,藉此表明我得罪了該撒;
'They cast me out once for all, and this they think is to condemn me, by showing that I sinned against Caesar;
52:142
before him I wish to be judged, the one who has been wronged.'
52:143
'To the Jews I have done no wrong, as thou also very well knowest.'
52:144
He now laid hold of him, as of one who was granting a favor.
52:145
Then, since he had laid hold of him, he again relaxes his speech, adding:
52:146
'If then I am a wrongdoer, or have committed anything worthy of death, I refuse not to die.'
52:147
'I pronounce the sentence against myself,' he says.
52:148
這話不是出於一個貪求死亡的人,乃是出於一個對自己所講的事極有把握的人;
This belongs not to one who longs for death, but to one exceedingly confident in the things he was speaking of;
52:149
for the plea of justice too must be made with boldness, so as to put them to shame.
52:150
'But if there be nothing of the things whereof they accuse me, no one can give me up to them.'
52:151
'Even should he wish it,' he says, 'he will not be able.'
52:152
他沒有說「我不該死」,也沒有說「我當被釋放」,乃是說「我已預備好在該撒面前受審」;
He did not say, 'I am not worthy to die,' nor, 'to be released,' but, 'I am ready to be judged before Caesar;'
52:153
at the same time, calling to mind the vision also, he took the more courage to make his appeal.
52:154
他也沒有說「你」,乃是說「沒有人」;
And he did not say, 'Thou,' but, 'No one;'
52:155
and he added, 'I appeal unto Caesar,' so that the insult might not fall upon that one.
52:156
'Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered:'
52:157
Sawest thou how he grants a favor? For this is a favor—to confer with the accusers, which is the mark of a corrupted judgment, and one that confounds the proper order.
52:158
Observe again how his trial is extended, and how the plot becomes an occasion for the preaching.
52:159
因為這些事都是這樣安排的,好使他能安穩地在看守之下被解往耶路撒冷,不受任何人的暗算;
For these things are so ordered, that with ease and under guard he might be conveyed to Jerusalem, plotted against by no one;
52:160
for it was not the same thing simply to arrive, and to come upon such a charge.
52:161
This also caused the Jews to come together there.
52:162
Then again time passes as he tarries at Jerusalem, that thou mayest learn that even when time had elapsed, the devices of the plot avail nothing against him, since God permits it not.
52:163
'And this Agrippa the king and Bernice came down to Caesarea.'
52:164
This Agrippa, who was also called Herod, seems to me to be another, so that this is the fourth after that one in the time of James.
52:165
Observe the enemies cooperating against their will.
52:166
為使聽眾成為一大群,亞基帕便起了願意聽他的心;
And that the audience might become a great one, Agrippa fell into a desire to hear him;
52:167
and he hears him not simply, but with great preparation.
52:168
And behold the defense which the ruler makes:
52:169
'But when this man himself had appealed unto Augustus, I determined to send him, concerning whom I have nothing certain to write unto my lord.'
52:170
非斯都就這樣寫,猶太人的殘暴便公然被揭露示眾;
So Festus writes, and the cruelty of the Jews is paraded for all to see;
52:171
for when it is the governor who says these things, his testimony is beyond suspicion.
52:172
他之所以這樣說,正是為要叫猶太人連從他自己的口中也被定罪;
And it is for this reason that he speaks thus, so that the Jews might be condemned even out of his own mouth;
52:173
and after all of them have cast their vote against them, then it is that God brings on the punishment.
52:174
Lysias condemned them, Felix condemned them, Festus and those who curried favour with them condemned them, Agrippa condemned them.
52:175
What then remains? The Pharisees too condemned them.
52:176
And that he did condemn them, hear him as he says:
52:177
'They brought no charge of the crimes which I had suspected.'
52:178
他們固然提出了控告,卻無法加以證實;
And indeed they did bring charges, but they did not prove them;
52:179
for the plot and the reckless attempt gave ground for suspicion, but the examination revealed nothing of the sort.
52:180
'And concerning a certain Jesus,' he says, 'who was dead.'
52:181
With good reason he says 'a certain Jesus,' inasmuch as he was a man holding office and paying no heed to these matters.
52:182
It was from this cause too that he said, 'Being at a loss myself as to the inquiry concerning these things.'
52:183
For in truth the investigation of such matters was beyond the hearing of such a judge.
52:184
And if you are at a loss, why do you drag him off to Jerusalem? For this reason Paul too, not deeming it right to be judged by him, appeals to Caesar, saying:
52:185
'I am standing before Caesar's tribunal, where I ought to be judged;'
52:186
for concerning this very thing they were accusing him.
52:187
Do you hear the appeal? Do you hear the Jews' plotting? Do you hear the uproar? (4)
52:188
All these things roused Agrippa, as he listened, into a desire to hear him.
52:189
And Festus grants the favour, and thereafter Paul becomes yet more illustrious.
52:190
Such benefits, as I said, did the plots against him procure.
52:191
Had these things not happened, none of the rulers would have deigned to hear him, none would have listened with such quietness and silence.
52:192
And though he seems to be teaching and making a defence, he is rather delivering a public oration with great orderliness.
52:193
Let us not, then, think plots against us to be a grievous thing.
52:194
只要我們自己不陷害自己,就沒有人能夠陷害我們;
So long as we do not plot against ourselves, no one will be able to plot against us;
52:195
或者說,他們固然施行陰謀,卻絲毫不能傷害我們,反倒使我們得著最大的益處;
or rather, they do plot, but they do us no harm—nay, they even benefit us in the greatest degree;
52:196
so that we ourselves are masters both of suffering ill and of not suffering it.
52:197
Behold, I solemnly testify, and I say it with a loud voice and clearer than a trumpet—and if it were possible to go up on high and cry it aloud, I would not have refused—that no man among all who dwell upon the earth can harm the Christian.
52:198
我何必單說人呢?連那鬼魔自己、那暴君、那魔鬼,也不能傷害他,除非人自己虧負了自己;
And why do I speak of men? Not even the demon himself, the tyrant, the devil, can do so—unless a man wrongs his own self;
52:199
however much anyone may wish to work us some evil.
52:200
For just as no one could harm an angel, so neither can one man harm another man who is upon the earth in like manner.
52:201
But neither will he himself be able to harm another, so long as he is good.
52:202
What then could be equal to this, when a man can neither be harmed nor harm another? For this is no less than the other—the not wishing to harm another.
52:203
這樣的人,便是一種天使,且與神相像;
Such a one, then, is a kind of angel, and like unto God;
52:204
but the angel is such by nature, whereas this man is such by his own choice.
52:205
He can therefore neither be harmed, nor harm another.
52:206
然而我們說「他不能」,你不要以為這是出於無能(其實無能反倒是相反的一面);
But when we say 'he cannot,' do not suppose this to be from weakness (for on the contrary it is weakness that harms);
52:207
因為那本性既不能承受傷害,也不能虧負別人;
for that nature is capable neither of receiving harm, nor of wronging another;
52:208
since this too is another kind of harm.
52:209
For we harm ourselves in no other way than by harming another, and the greater part of our sins comes about in this way, through the wrong done to ourselves.
52:210
So that for this reason too the Christian cannot be harmed, because neither can he do harm.
52:211
But how, in harming others, we harm ourselves—come, let us take up the argument in each of these matters and exercise the point we are making.
52:212
假設有人行不義,加以侮辱,貪得無饜;
Let a man do wrong, let him insult, let him grasp at more than his due;
52:213
whom then has such a man harmed? Has he not harmed himself first? This is surely plain to everyone.
52:214
Τῷ.
因為在那受害者,損失不過在於財物,但在他自己,損失卻在於靈魂;
For to the one the loss is in his goods, but to himself it is in his soul;
52:215
for indeed such a man's soul is delivered over to destruction and to punishment.
52:216
那麼這樣的人虧負了誰呢?請告訴我,豈不是他自己麼?因為不義的本性正是這樣;
Whom then has such a man wronged? Was it not himself, tell me? For such is the nature of wrongdoing;
52:217
it harms the one who begets it first, and with a thousand hurts, but the other only slightly—nay, rather, it does not even slightly harm him, but even benefits him.
52:218
But I have said nothing that carries conviction.
52:219
那麼,就這樣設想吧(因為整件事的關鍵尤其在於這類情形):有一個窮人,只有少許錢財,僅夠維持必需的口糧;另有一個富人,家道豐盈,且大有權勢;就讓那富人奪去窮人所有的,剝得他精光,把他交在饑餓之中,自己卻拿著從那窮人身上不義奪來的東西縱情享樂;
Let it be so, then (for in these instances above all the whole matter lies): a poor man who has but little money and just enough for his necessary food, and another who is rich and well-off and possessed of much power; and let the rich man take away what belongs to the poor man, and strip him bare, and hand him over to famine, while he himself luxuriates on what he has unjustly seized from him;
52:220
such a man has not only done him no harm, but has even benefited him, while to himself he has not only rendered no benefit, but has even done harm.
52:221
怎麼說呢?首先,他被那惡的良心所鞭撻,天天受刺痛,又被眾人所定罪;
How so? First, by being scourged by his evil conscience, and pricked day by day, and condemned by all;
52:222
and next, in the judgement to come.
52:223
如此,這人受了傷害,已經由此顯明了;
But that this man is harmed has hereby been made plain;
52:224
but how the other is benefited, tell me.
52:225
因為受苦而能以剛毅忍受,這其中有極大的益處;
Because to suffer ill and to bear it nobly carries great gain;
52:226
for suffering ill is a loosing of sins, it is an exercise-ground of the love of wisdom, it is a teaching of virtue.
52:227
Let us see, then, which of the two is in evil case—this man or that.
52:228
因為那受苦的人,若是愛慕智慧的,必要剛毅地忍受;
For that man, if he be a lover of wisdom, will bear it nobly;
52:229
but this man will be day by day in trembling and in dread.
52:230
Who then is being wronged—this man or that? 'You are telling fables,' someone says;
52:231
因為當一個人沒有東西可吃,被迫哀哭愁苦、煩躁不安,或是上前乞討卻一無所得,這豈不是把靈魂與身體一同毀壞了麼?其實講寓言故事的乃是你;
for when a man has nothing to eat, and is forced to bewail himself and to fret, or to go begging and receive nothing, does he not thereby destroy soul and body together? You are the one telling fables;
52:232
for I am pointing to actual facts.
52:233
For tell me, is there none among the rich who frets? What then? Is poverty the cause of this? But does he not go hungry? And what of that? The penalty is the greater, when a man does this in the midst of wealth.
52:234
因為財富並不能使人剛毅高尚,貧窮也不能使人軟弱;
For neither does wealth make a man noble, nor poverty make him weak;
52:235
since otherwise none of those living in wealth would live a wretched life, nor would any of those in poverty ever curse himself.
52:236
But that the things you allege are indeed fables, I will make plain to you from this.
52:237
Tell me, was Paul in poverty or in wealth? Did he go hungry, or not? It is possible to hear him as he says it himself:
52:238
Did the prophets go hungry, or not? They too were reduced to distress.
52:239
Again you bring me Paul, again you bring the prophets—ten men and twenty!
52:240
But from what quarter do you wish? 'From the many,' he says. Point out to me some who bear it nobly.
52:241
But what is rare is always of this sort, and few are the good.
52:242
And if you please, let us also examine the matter in itself.
52:243
Let us see whose anxiety is greater and more bitter, and whose is more easily borne.
52:244
Does not the one worry over necessary food, while the other, letting this go, worries over ten thousand affairs? The rich man does not fear famine, but he fears other things—
52:245
often for his very safety itself.
52:246
The poor man does not have freedom from care about food, but he has the other freedom from care—security and tranquillity.
52:247
Besides, if to do wrong were not an evil but a good, why are we ashamed? Why do we hide ourselves? Why, when reproached, do we grow indignant and vexed? If to be wronged were not good, why do we plume ourselves and take pride in the matter, and plead our cause therein? Do you wish to learn how the one is better than the other? Look at those on this side, look at those on that.
52:248
Why laws? Why courts of justice? Why punishments? Is it not on account of those men, as being diseased and ailing? 'But the pleasure is great,' he says.
52:249
有什麼比一個背負這種嫌疑的人更糟糕呢?有什麼更岌岌可危?有什麼更朽壞不堪?他豈不是終日如同在船難之中?縱使他行了公義之事,也無人相信他,反倒因他的權勢被眾人定罪;
What is worse than a man who lies under such suspicion? What is more precarious? What is more rotten? Is he not perpetually in shipwreck? Even if he does something just, he is not believed, being condemned by all on account of his power;
52:250
因為凡與他同住的人都成了控告他的人;
for he has as accusers all who dwell with him;
52:251
他無法享有友誼;
he cannot enjoy friendship;
52:252
for no one would readily choose to become the friend of a man of such reputation, lest he share in the same suspicion cast upon him.
52:253
眾人躲避他,就如躲避一頭野獸;
As from a wild beast, so all turn away from him;
52:254
as from a plague and an enemy and a murderer and a foe of nature, they turn away from the unjust man.
52:255
If he falls into a court of law, the wrongdoer needs no accuser, for his reputation, in place of every accuser, condemns him.
52:256
But not so the one who is wronged; rather, he has all men as defenders, sharing his pain, stretching out a hand to him.
52:257
行不義若是又好又安全的,那就讓人承認自己是不義的罷;
If to do wrong is good and safe, let someone confess himself to be unjust;
52:258
but if he does not dare, why then does he pursue it as though it were a good thing? Let us see, too, how even within our own selves, if this happens, how many evils arise.
52:259
For tell me: if any of the parts within us, overstepping its proper measure, should reach after another's, and the spleen, forsaking its own place, should wish to seize what belongs to another along with its own, is this not disease? Again, if the moisture within us, the humour, should fill everything, is this not dropsy? Along with it, let the bile too seek more room, and let the blood be poured out on every side.
52:260
至於靈魂中的忿怒、慾望,以及其餘的一切,若越過本分,豈不連自己也一同毀壞了嗎?飲食也是如此;
And what of anger in the soul, and desire, and all the rest—if they overstep their measure, do they not destroy themselves along with it? So too with food;
52:261
if more be taken than it can digest, it clothes the body with diseases.
52:262
For whence come gouty pains? Whence come the palsies and the trembling of the body? Is it not from the immoderate use of food? Again, in the body, if the eye should wish to take in more, or should desire to see more than what is appointed, or should receive greater light, that which is beyond measure harms rather than helps.
52:263
But if, where light is something good, the eye, should it wish to see more, is ruined—
52:264
when it sees something too brilliant, consider then the case in what is evil.
52:265
聽覺若接收過大的聲音,心思便會被震懵;
If the hearing receives too loud a voice, the mind is stunned;
52:266
the mind, whenever it reasons about things beyond itself, is confounded, and whatever exceeds what is due, it utterly loses.
52:267
For this is covetousness—to have more than what is appointed.
52:268
So indeed it is also with money: whenever we wish to lay on more burdens, even if we do not perceive it, we nourish within ourselves a cruel beast, having much, needing much, encompassing ourselves with ten thousand cares, offering many handles to the devil.
52:269
正因如此,魔鬼在富人身上根本不需費力;
For this reason the devil needs no toil in the case of the wealthy;
52:270
for they become ready for his downward assault chiefly by reason of their wealth.
52:271
But not so in the case of those who live with poverty; rather, quite the contrary.
52:272
Thus these things by their very nature bring destruction.
52:273
Therefore I exhort you to abstain from the desire of these things, that we may be able to escape the snares of the evil one, and, laying hold of virtue, to attain the everlasting good things, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
