'But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, which is the sect of the Sadducees, and were filled with jealousy, and laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the public ward.'
13:2
Nothing is more shameless than wickedness, nothing more audacious.
13:3
Though they had learned by experience their courage from what they had attempted before, nevertheless they attempt it, and once more band themselves together.
13:4
What does it mean, 'Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him'? He was stirred up, it says, being moved at what had come to pass.
13:5
And they laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the public ward.
13:6
Now they set upon them more vehemently.
13:7
They did not judge them at once, expecting that they would again become tame.
13:8
And how is it plain that they set upon them more vehemently? From their putting them into public ward.
13:9
他們再次陷入危險,也再次得享那從神而來的扶助;
Again they fall into dangers, and again they enjoy the help that comes from God;
13:10
and in what manner, listen to what follows.
13:11
But an angel of the Lord by night opened the gates of the prison, and having brought them forth, said:
13:12
Go, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
13:13
This took place both for the consolation of those men and for the benefit and instruction of these.
13:14
And observe how that which happened in the case of Christ, this same thing takes place now also.
13:15
For the miracles, while they are being wrought, He does not permit them to see; but from those things by which they might learn, these He furnishes.
13:16
例如在祂自己復活的事上,祂並不容他們看見祂是如何復活的;
For instance, in the case of His own resurrection, He did not permit them to see how He rose;
13:17
因為他們原不配看見這事;
for they were unworthy to behold this;
13:18
but He shows it from the things by which He wrought it.
13:19
同樣,在水變成酒的事上,那些坐席的人也沒有看見這事發生;
Likewise also in the case of the wine that was made from the water, those who reclined at table do not see it happen;
13:20
and He entrusts the judgment to others.
13:21
For they do not see them being led forth, but the tokens, from which they were able to understand what had come to pass, these they saw.
13:22
那麼,神為何又在夜間把他們領出來呢?因為這樣比別的方式更能叫人相信;
But why then did He bring them out by night? Because in this way rather than in the other they were the more believed;
13:23
再者,也因為若非如此,那些人就不會前來查問;
and besides, because otherwise they would not have come to make inquiry;
13:24
nor indeed would they themselves have done so in any other way.
13:25
在古時的人身上也是如此發生的,例如在尼布甲尼撒的事上;
So also it came to pass in the case of the ancients, for example in the case of Nebuchadnezzar;
13:26
he saw the children praising God in the furnace, and then he came into amazement.
13:27
It behooved them, therefore, to ask these men first, 'How did you come out?' But they, as though nothing had happened, ask, saying:
13:28
Did we not straitly charge you not to receive it? And observe how they learn everything through others.
13:29
For they see the prison shut with all security, and the keepers standing before the doors.
13:30
And when they had heard this, they entered about daybreak into the temple, and taught.
13:31
大祭司和同他在一起的人來了,就召齊公會的人,和以色列人的眾長老;
But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called together the council, and all the senate of the children of Israel;
13:32
and they sent to the prison-house to have them brought.
13:33
但差役來到,卻沒有在監裡找著他們;
But when the officers came, they found them not in the prison;
13:34
就回來稟報說:「我們看見監牢關得極其穩妥,看守的人也站在門前;
and they returned and reported, saying that we found the prison-house shut in all security, and the keepers standing before the doors;
13:35
but when we had opened, we found no one within.
13:36
The security was twofold, just as in the case of the tomb, both the seal and the men.
13:37
Tell me, were these things that happened in their case human? Who brought them out while the doors were shut? How did they come forth while the keepers stood before the doors? Truly these are the words of men raving and drunken.
13:38
Those whom prison, and bonds, and shut doors could not restrain, of these they expected to get the better, suffering the very thing that foolish children do.
13:39
The officers, at any rate, on this account come and confess what had happened, so as to shut off from them every excuse.
13:40
Do you see signs upon signs, differing from one another, some wrought by them, some wrought toward them, which were even more brilliant? It was well that it was not announced to them at once, but only after they had first been brought into perplexity, so that, having considered that it was a divine power, they might thus learn all.
13:41
Now when the high priest, and the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them as to what this might come to.
13:42
But someone came and reported to them, saying, Behold, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.
13:43
於是守殿官同差役去把使徒帶來,並沒有用強暴;
Then the captain went away with the officers, and brought them without violence;
13:44
for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.
13:45
They feared, it says, the multitude.
13:46
群眾對他們有何益處呢?他們理當敬畏神才是,就是那位常像救飛鳥一般,把使徒從那些人手中奪回來的神;
For what did the multitude profit them? They ought rather to have feared God, who was ever snatching them, like birds, out of the others' hands;
13:47
but they rather fear the multitude.
13:48
But the high priest questioned them, saying:
13:49
Did we not straitly command you not to teach in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.
13:50
那麼使徒是怎樣行的呢?他們又溫和地與他們對答;
What then do the apostles do? Again they discourse with them with mildness;
13:51
for who are you that set yourselves in array against God? But what? Again in the manner of exhortation and counsel, and with much mildness, they answer.
13:52
But Peter and the apostles answered and said:
13:53
We ought to obey God rather than men.
13:54
Great is their philosophy, and of such a kind, that from this they show that these men also are fighting against God.
13:55
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you slew, hanging Him on a tree.
13:56
Him God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
13:57
'Whom you slew,' he says, 'God raised up.'
13:58
And observe how they again ascribe the whole to the Father, that He might not seem to be alien from the Father.
13:59
And 'He exalted,' he says, 'with His right hand.'
13:60
This signifies not simply the resurrection alone, but also the exaltation, that is, the ascension.
13:61
'To give repentance to Israel.'
13:62
Observe again the gain, and the instruction brought to completion in the guise of a defense.
13:63
And we are His witnesses of these things.
13:64
Then, making the word trustworthy henceforth, he added:
13:65
And so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.
13:66
你可看見他們不但引用自己的見證,也引用聖靈的見證麼?並且他們沒有說「賜給我們」,乃是說「賜給順從的人」;
Do you see how they employ not only their own testimony, but also that of the Spirit? And they did not say, 'Whom He gave to us,' but 'To those who obey';
13:67
at once showing moderation, and at the same time showing it to be a great thing,
13:68
and making clear that it is possible for these also to receive it.
13:69
Observe how they were instructed both by deeds and by words, and yet gave no heed, so that their condemnation might be just.
13:70
For it was on this very account that God permitted them to be brought to the tribunal, that those men also might be instructed, if indeed they were willing to learn, and that the apostles might be trained unto boldness.
13:71
But when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and were minded to slay them.
13:72
When they ought to have been struck with awe at what they had heard, instead they are cut to the heart, and take counsel to slay them without cause.
13:73
But it is now needful to look at what has been read from the beginning.
13:74
But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison by night, and having led them out, said:
13:75
Go, and standing in the temple speak to the people all the words of this Life.
13:76
他並非親自把他們帶走,而是釋放了他們;
He does not himself lead them away, but sets them free;
13:77
so that even by this their fearlessness might be made known, which indeed they showed by entering into the temple by night and teaching.
13:78
但若像那些人所猜想的,是守衛把他們放出去的,那麼他們若是受人勸說而出來,就必逃走了;
But if, as those men supposed, the guards had cast them out, they would have fled, if indeed they had gone out because they were persuaded to;
13:79
or rather, if those men had cast them out, they would not have stood in the temple, but would have run away.
13:80
But no one is so senseless as not to perceive this.
13:81
他說:「我們豈不是嚴嚴地禁止你們嗎?」那麼,倘若那些人也曾聽從了你們,你們追究他們的責任才算合理;
'Did we not strictly command you?' he says. If then those men also had obeyed you, you are right to call them to account;
13:82
but if from the start they said they would not obey, both the reckonings and the commands are superfluous.
13:83
See the inconsistency of the charges, and their surpassing folly.
13:84
They wish now to show that the purposes of the Jews were murderous, as though they were doing these things not for the truth's sake, but because they wished to avenge themselves.
13:85
正因如此,使徒們甚至沒有以驕橫的口氣回答他們;
For this reason the apostles do not even answer them with boldness;
13:86
然而,誰若使全城都仰望於他,又蒙受這樣大的恩典,能不說出、道出些甚麼豪言壯語呢?但這些人卻不然;
and yet who, having the whole city hanging upon him and enjoying such great grace, would not have said and uttered something great? But not so these men;
13:87
for they were not angry, but had compassion on them and wept, and were considering how they might deliver them from their error and their wrath.
13:88
And they no longer say to them:
13:89
but they declare, saying:
13:90
showing thereby that these things are according to the will of God.
13:91
他們並未說:「我們那時豈不是也對你們說過,我們所看見所聽見的,不能不說嗎?」因為他們並不好爭名譽;
And they did not say, 'Did we not tell you at that time also, We cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard?' for they are not contentious for honor;
13:92
but again they speak the same things: the cross, the resurrection.
13:93
他們也沒有說明祂為何被釘十字架;
And they do not say why He was crucified;
13:94
but they hint at it, not yet openly, wishing meanwhile to strike them with fear.
13:95
請告訴我,這裡有甚麼修辭辯術呢?一點也沒有;
Tell me, what rhetoric is there here? None;
13:96
thus without artifice did they preach the Gospel of life.
13:97
And having said, 'He exalted Him,' he tells also for what purpose: 'To give repentance'—adding, 'to Israel'—'and remission of sins.'
13:98
'But these things seemed meanwhile incredible,' they say.
13:99
你這話是甚麼意思?這些事豈不更為可信嗎?既然官長無從反駁,眾人也無從反駁;
What do you mean? And how were they not rather credible, seeing that neither the rulers were able to gainsay them, nor the multitude;
13:100
but the one party were put to silence, and the other were being taught? 'And we,' he says, 'are witnesses of these words.'
13:101
為著哪些話呢?就是祂應許赦罪、應許悔改;
Of what words? That He promised remission, that He promised repentance;
13:102
for the resurrection was by this time already acknowledged.
13:103
'And that He gives remission, we bear witness, and the Holy Spirit, who would not have come upon us unless our sins had first been loosed;'
13:104
so that this is an indisputable proof.
13:105
可憐的人哪,你聽見了罪得赦免,聽見祂並不追討刑罰,你竟還想要殺人嗎?這是何等大的惡毒!其實你本當或是駁倒他們,證明他們說謊,或是既不能駁倒,就當被說服;
You hear of remission of sins, O wretched one, and that He does not exact punishment, and do you wish to slay? And of how great wickedness is this? Yet you ought either to have convicted them of lying, or, being unable to do so, to have been persuaded;
13:106
but if you were not willing to be persuaded, at least not to slay.
13:107
For what was there worthy of death? But those men, being under the sway of wrath, did not even perceive what had come to pass.
13:108
See how here, having called to mind the outrage, they discourse concerning remission, showing that the things which had been done were worthy of death, but that the things being granted were given to them as to men of good disposition.
13:109
除了說他們仍有機會蒙悅納之外,還能用甚麼別的話去說服他們呢?且看那奸詐;
How else could one have persuaded them than by speaking of them as being in good repute? And see the cunning;
13:110
they set the Sadducees upon them, who were especially grieved at the resurrection.
13:111
But they gained nothing from their wickedness.
13:112
And what man, enjoying such things as the apostles did, would not have become great? But observe for me, before they enjoyed the grace, how they were continuing steadfastly with one accord in prayer,
13:113
and hoping in the aid from above.
13:114
And you too, beloved, hope for the kingdom of heaven, yet endure nothing? And you too have received the Spirit, yet do not suffer such things, nor face danger? But those men, before they could take breath from their former trials, were again being led to others.
13:115
And this very thing itself—not to be puffed up, not to be vainglorious—how great a good it is!
13:116
To discourse with gentleness, how great a gain it is!
13:117
For not all was of grace, but many were the tokens of their own zeal also.
13:118
For the very fact that the things of grace shone forth in them was a mark of their own diligence.
13:119
See then, straightway from the beginning, how careful Peter is, how sober and watchful, how those who had believed cast away their possessions.
13:120
They had nothing of their own, they were in prayer, they showed forth concord, they passed their time in fastings.
13:121
Of what grace were these things? Tell me.
13:122
正因如此,神也藉著他們,使那些差役受了責備的醒悟;
For this reason He also brings it about that through them there should come the conviction of their officers;
13:123
who also, just as in the case of Christ those who were sent said, 'Never did a man so speak as this man,' reported when they returned the very things they had seen.
13:124
But do you consider here both their gentleness, how they yield, and the feigned resolve of the high priest.
13:125
For he discourses with them gently, forsooth, inasmuch as he was afraid, and wished rather to hinder them than to slay them, since this he was not able to do.
13:126
And in order to move them all, and to hang over them the peril concerning the last extremities, 'Do you wish,' he says, 'to bring upon us the blood of this man?' Does He still seem to you to be a man? Thus he spoke, showing that the exhortation had become necessary for them.
13:127
But observe Peter also, what he says:
13:128
'Him did God exalt with His right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel and remission of sins.'
13:129
Here he makes no mention of the Gentiles, that he might not give a handle against himself.
13:130
'And they were minded,' he says, 'to slay them.'
13:131
且看使徒這一方又陷於困惑,陷於痛苦之中;
See again these men in perplexity, these men in anguish;
13:132
but those others in ease and good cheer and in luxury.
13:133
They were not simply pained, but they were 'cut to the heart.'
13:134
這正應驗了那句話:作惡的自己也遭殃;
This then is that saying, to fare ill in doing ill;
13:135
just as here also one may see.
13:136
These men were in bonds, they stood before a tribunal, and yet it was the judges who were in perplexity, in great helplessness.
13:137
因為正如那擊打精鋼的人,自己反倒受了那一擊;
For just as he who strikes the adamant himself receives the blow;
13:138
so they saw that not only was their boldness in no way hindered, but that the preaching was even increasing the more, and that the apostles were discoursing without dismay, and were giving no handles against themselves.
13:139
Let us then also imitate these men, beloved, and let us become undismayed amid all terrors.
13:140
There is nothing terrible to him who fears God, but among those who fear Him not are terrors.
13:141
For he who through virtue becomes superior to the passions, and passes by present affairs as though they were a shadow, how shall he suffer anything terrible from anyone? Whom shall he fear? Or what shall he reckon among terrors? Therefore let us flee for refuge to this unshaken rock.
13:142
If someone were building us a city, and putting a wall around it,
13:143
Nay, rather, even if He had settled us in a land where no one troubled us, and had furnished there abundance of all things, letting us have no dealings with anyone, He would not have established us in such security as Christ now has.
13:144
那麼,若你願意,就假定這城甚至是銅造的,四面都有堅固而攻不破的城牆;
Let it be granted then, if you will, that the city is even of bronze, having on every side a wall strong and impregnable;
13:145
願沒有仇敵來逼近它,願它擁有豐足而肥沃的土地;
let no enemy press upon it, and let it have land plentiful and rich;
13:146
願一切其他事物也都豐足充裕;
let there be present also an abundance of all other things;
13:147
願眾市民都溫和而和藹,願那裡不見有作惡的人,沒有賊,沒有搶奪衣服的強盜,沒有誣告者,沒有法庭,惟有單純誠實的交易往來;
let the citizens be gentle and kindly, and let no evildoer appear there, no thief, no robber, no informer, no law court, but dealings that are simple and honest;
13:148
願我們就住在這樣的城中;
and let us dwell in this city;
13:149
not even so would it be possible to live in security.
13:150
Why? Because it is inevitable to have differences with servants, and with one's wife, and with children, and this becomes an occasion of much despondency.
13:151
但在這裡卻沒有這類的事;
But here there was nothing of the kind;
13:152
for there was not, there was not anything to grieve them, nor anything that caused any despondency.
13:153
But the wonder is this: that the very things which seemed to cause despondency, these became the causes of all joy and gladness.
13:154
For tell me, on what account were those men to be distressed? on what account to be vexed? Would you have us bring someone forward into the midst? Let there be one of consular rank.
13:155
願他擁有極多的財富,願他住在京都皇城,願他與任何人都無爭訟,只顧享樂,一心投於此事,安坐在財富、尊榮與權勢的頂峰上;
let him possess much wealth, let him inhabit the imperial city, let him have dealings against no one, let him only luxuriate, and let him give himself to this, seated at the very summit of wealth and honour and power;
13:156
讓我們把彼得擺在他對面——那身陷囹圄、若你願意說、置身於萬般苦難中的彼得;
let us set over against him Peter, in bonds, if you please, amid ten thousand ills;
13:157
and we shall find that this man rather is the one who lives in luxury.
13:158
For when there is such an abundance of joy, that a man delights even while in bonds, consider how great is the magnitude of that joy.
13:159
正如那些身居高位的人,無論遭遇甚麼可怕的事,都不覺得,反倒常保喜樂;
For just as those who are set in high office do not feel whatever calamities befall them, but continue in their joy;
13:160
so also these men, for these very reasons, rejoiced the more.
13:161
因為實在無法,實在無法用言語道盡那些為基督而受某種可怕苦難之人所得的喜樂;
For it is not possible, it is not possible, to set forth in words the pleasure which those experience who suffer some dreadful thing for Christ's sake;
13:162
for they rejoice more in their sufferings than in good things.
13:163
If anyone has loved Christ, he knows what I mean.
13:164
But what then? Was it for safety's sake that they were to flee from hardships? And who, tell me, though possessing ten thousandfold wealth, could have escaped so many dangers, consorting with so many nations, merely for the sake of a change of polity? But these men accomplished all things as if by an imperial command—nay, rather, far more easily.
13:165
因為皇帝的敕令尚且不如那些人的一切話語那樣必然生效;
For not so surely does an imperial command take effect, as all the words of those men were accomplished;
13:166
for the imperial command is imposed by compulsion, but these men won people willingly and of their own choice, and grateful with ten thousandfold gratitude.
13:167
What imperial command could have persuaded men to part with all their possessions and with their very life, and to despise house, country, kinsfolk, and salvation itself? Yet the voices of the fishermen and tentmakers had power to do this.
13:168
So that they were both in pleasure, and were more powerful and stronger than all.
13:169
'Yes,' says someone, 'those men, because they wrought the signs.'
13:170
但那些信主的人,請告訴我,他們行了甚麼神蹟呢——那三千人、那五千人,他們也在大喜樂中度日?這是理所當然的;
But those who believed, tell me, what signs did they work—the three thousand and the five thousand—who also passed their lives in great gladness? With good reason;
13:171
for the source of all despondencies, the possession of riches, had been done away.
13:172
因為正是那個,正是那個,成了戰爭、爭鬥、憂傷、愁苦以及一切禍患的緣由;
For that, that was the cause of wars, and of strife, and of grief, and of despondency, and of all evils;
13:173
it is that which makes life toilsome and more full of grief.
13:174
And one would find that those in wealth rather than those in poverty have more occasions of despondency.
13:175
But if to some it does not seem to be so, that is not owing to the nature of things, but to their own opinion.
13:176
And if those in wealth do have some pleasure, it is nothing to wonder at.
13:177
For indeed those who are covered with the itch are in much pleasure.
13:178
That the rich differ in no respect from those men, but that their soul is of some such kind, is plain from this:
13:179
各樣掛慮折磨著他們,然而他們卻甘願為著那短暫的享樂而糾纏在其中;
cares vex them, and yet they choose to be entangled in them for the sake of the momentary pleasure;
13:180
but those who are freed from these are in health and outside of despondency.
13:181
請告訴我,哪一樣更快樂呢?哪一樣更穩妥呢?是為著一個餅、一件衣服操心,還是不顧自身,卻為著萬人、連奴僕與自由人都焦慮呢?因為正如這人是為著自己而畏懼;
Which is the more pleasant, tell me? which the more secure? to be careful about one loaf and one garment, or, taking no thought about oneself, to be anxious over ten thousand, both servants and freemen? For just as this man is in dread on his own account;
13:182
so also you are in dread on behalf of those who hang upon your head.
13:183
'And why then does poverty seem a thing to be shunned?' one asks. Because the other good things too happen to be objects of aversion to many—things which are shunned not because they are objects of aversion, but because they are hard to achieve.
13:184
所以這事也不是該厭避的,而是難以成就的;
Therefore this too is not a thing to be shunned, but a thing hard to achieve;
13:185
so that if only one were able to bear it, it would not be a thing to be shunned.
13:186
For why did the apostles not deprecate it? why do many even choose it, and not only do not deprecate it, but even run to it? For that which is truly to be shunned is not even to be chosen, except by madmen.
13:187
But if the philosophic and lofty-minded among men resort to it as to a place safe and free from disease, it is no wonder if it seems otherwise to the rest.
13:188
在我看來,富人無非就像一座沒有城牆、坐落在平原上的城,從四面招引那些圖謀害它的人;
For the rich man seems to me to be nothing else than a city without walls lying in a plain, drawing on from every quarter those who plot against it;
13:189
but poverty is a safe fortress, girt about with much bronze, and having an approach hard to climb.
13:190
有人卻說:「然而事實恰恰相反;
'And yet the contrary is the case,' says someone;
13:191
因為正是這些人常被拖上法庭;
for these are the ones who are often dragged into court;
13:192
these are the ones who are insulted and ill-treated.'
13:193
Not the poor simply, but the poor who wish to be rich.
13:194
But I am not speaking of those, but of those who are earnest to pass their lives in poverty.
13:195
For tell me, why does no one drag those in the mountains into court? And yet, if poverty were easy to master, those above all others ought to be dragged, inasmuch as they are poorer than all.
13:196
為甚麼沒有人把那些行乞的人拖上法庭呢?為甚麼沒有人向他們施暴或誣告他們呢?豈不是因為他們住在較安全之處嗎?在多少人看來,這事——我是指貧窮與行乞——甚至是不祥的?那麼請告訴我,行乞是美好的事嗎?若有人安慰、有人憐憫,若有人施捨,那便是美好的;
Why does no one drag the beggars into court? why does no one use violence against them or bring false charges? Is it not because they abide in a safer place? To how many does the thing seem even of ill omen—I mean poverty, and begging? What then, tell me, is begging a fine thing? It is fine, if there be one to comfort and to show mercy, if there be one who gives;
13:197
so that everyone knows this to be a life free from trouble and secure.
13:198
but on condition that one does not covet wealth.
13:199
For tell me, whom should I rather call blessed—those apt for virtue, or those who stand far off from it? Clearly those who are apt.
13:200
Who then is more apt for learning something useful and for shining in true wisdom—this man or that? To everyone it is surely plain that it is this one.
13:201
讓一個人從行乞者聚集的市場被帶來,他是殘廢的、瘸腿的、手腳彎曲的;
Let one be brought from the market-place of the beggars, and let him be maimed, lame, crippled;
13:202
另一個則相貌俊美、身體強壯、四體充沛、財貨充溢;
and another, fair to look upon, strong of body, vigorous on every side, overflowing with riches;
13:203
let him have illustrious birth and great power.
13:204
Let us then bring these two into the training-school of true wisdom, and let us see which of them will the better receive the lessons of the teaching.
13:205
那麼,就讓第一條教訓是這樣:「你要謙卑、要有節制」;
Let the first precept then be this: 'Be humble and moderate';
13:206
因為這是基督所吩咐的;
for this is what Christ enjoined;
13:207
他們當中誰能更好地成就這事呢,是這人還是那人?「哀慟的人有福了」;
which of them will be the better able to fulfil it, this man or that? 'Blessed are they that mourn';
13:208
誰能更留意這所說的話呢?「謙卑的人有福了」;
which will the more attend to what is said? 'Blessed are the lowly';
13:209
誰能更側耳聽從呢?「清心的人有福了」;
which will the more give ear? 'Blessed are the pure in heart';
13:210
「飢渴慕義的人有福了」;
'blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness';
13:211
「為義受逼迫的人有福了」;
'blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake';
13:212
which will the more readily accept these things? And, if you will, let us apply them all to each of the two.
13:213
Is not the one inflamed and swollen with pride on every side,
13:214
while the other is ever humble-minded and altogether restrained? It is quite evident.
13:215
There is indeed even a saying of this sort spoken by those outside the faith:
13:216
'Epictetus was a slave, maimed in body,
13:217
an Irus in poverty, and yet a friend of the immortals.'
13:218
But the soul of the rich man is full of every evil: arrogance, vainglory, countless lusts, wrath and fury, covetousness, injustice, and whatever else there may be.
13:219
It is plain, then, which soul is fit for philosophy—this one or that.
13:220
Doubtless you desire to learn which life is the more pleasant.
13:221
For I see this question raised among many: whether this manner of life is indeed the sweeter.
13:222
然而就連這一點也毋須懷疑;
And yet there is no need to doubt even about this;
13:223
for he who is near to health, he too is in great pleasure.
13:224
但請告訴我,就我們眼前所要成就的事——我是說這條誡命——而言,誰更適合遵行:是窮人還是富人?誰更容易起誓:是那為僕人動怒的、與無數契約糾纏的人,還是那只為一塊餅或一件衣裳而來的人?後者若願意,連起誓的必要都沒有,反而常在無所牽掛中度日;
But tell me, with regard to the matter before us, which we wish to achieve—I mean this law—who is the fitter, the poor man or the rich? Who will swear readily: he who is provoked to anger over his slaves, he who has dealings with countless contracts, or he who comes forward for a loaf of bread or a single garment? This man has no need even of oaths, if he so wills, but lives always free from entanglements;
13:225
or rather, he who is trained not to swear will often despise riches also; and one may see the paths of virtue everywhere opened up from this good beginning, all leading toward gentleness, toward contempt of money, toward reverence, toward composure of soul, toward compunction.
13:226
Let us not then be slothful, beloved, but let us once more show great earnestness:
13:227
已經成功的人,要謹守所成就的,免得輕易發生退落與倒流;
those who have succeeded, that they may guard what has been achieved, lest there easily come some ebbing and backward flow;
13:228
and those who still fall short, that they may rouse themselves and strive to make up what is lacking.
13:229
And meanwhile let those who have succeeded receive those not yet able, stretching out their hands as to men swimming in the open sea, and welcome them into the harbour of freedom from oaths.
13:230
For truly it is a safe harbour, not to swear:
13:231
a harbour, so that one is not drowned by the winds that fall upon him.
13:232
因為縱使忿怒、縱使凌辱、縱使暴烈沸騰,縱使任何事臨到,靈魂仍安然穩立,甚至連一句不當說的話也不會吐出;
For though anger, though insult, though fury boil over, though anything whatsoever befall, the soul stands in safety, so that it will not even cast forth any word that ought not to be spoken;
13:233
for it has not placed itself under any necessity, nor under any law.
13:234
See what Herod did because of his oath:
13:235
he cut off the head of the Forerunner.
13:236
'For because of his oaths,' it says, 'and those who reclined at table with him, he would not refuse her.'
13:237
What did the tribes suffer through an oath in the matter of the tribe of Benjamin? What did Saul suffer through an oath? For Saul indeed forswore himself, but Herod wrought what was worse than perjury—murder.
13:238
Again, you know what Joshua suffered because of the oath concerning the Gibeonites.
13:239
For swearing is truly a snare of Satan.
13:240
Let us then burst these cords, and set ourselves in a state easy to guard against every peril.
13:241
願我們脫離撒但的網羅;
Let us be delivered from the snare of Satan;
13:242
願我們敬畏主的誡命;
let us fear the commandment of the Lord;
13:243
願我們使自己養成這最美好的習慣;
let us bring ourselves into this most excellent habit;
13:244
that advancing on our way, and having fulfilled both this and the rest of the commandments, we may attain the good things promised to those who love Him, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
