Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying:
19:2
'Arise and go toward the south, unto the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.'
19:3
在我看來,他領受這命令時是在撒瑪利亞,因為從耶路撒冷出發,人不是往南走,乃是往北走;
It seems to me that he was given this command while he was in Samaria, because from Jerusalem one does not go toward the south, but toward the north;
19:4
but from Samaria one goes toward the south.
19:5
He says this, so that Philip might not be afraid of the watchfulness of the Jews.
19:6
And he did not ask, Why? but he arose and went.
19:7
'And behold,' it says, 'a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch, a court official of Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to worship at Jerusalem.'
19:8
'And he was returning, and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.'
19:9
論到這人所說的稱讚是極大的;
Great are the praises spoken concerning this man;
19:10
seeing that, though dwelling in Ethiopia, and encompassed by so many affairs, and there being no feast, and being in that superstitious city, he was coming to worship at Jerusalem.
19:11
And great too was his diligence, in that even while sitting in the carriage he was reading.
19:12
And the Spirit said to Philip:
19:13
'Go near and join yourself to this chariot.'
19:14
So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said:
19:15
'Do you then understand what you are reading?' And he said:
19:16
'How could I, unless someone should guide me?'
19:17
See again another instance of reverence.
19:18
In that, not understanding, he was reading; then, after reading, he inquires.
19:19
And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
19:20
Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this:
19:21
'He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is dumb,
19:22
so He opens not His mouth.
19:23
In His humiliation His judgment was taken away.
19:24
And who shall declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.'
19:25
And the eunuch answered Philip, and said:
19:26
'I beg you, of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself, or of some other?' Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture, preached to him the good news of Jesus.
19:27
你看見有關他的事是怎樣被神的安排所掌管的嗎?他先讀,卻不明白;
Do you see how the things concerning him are ordered by divine providence? First he reads and does not understand;
19:28
then he reads this very passage, where were the passion, and the resurrection, and the gift.
19:29
他們正沿路走的時候,來到一處有水的地方;
And as they went along the way, they came to a certain water;
19:30
'Behold, here is water; what hinders me from being baptized?' Do you see his eagerness? Do you see his exactness? And he commanded the chariot to stand still, and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
19:31
And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, and the eunuch saw him no more.
19:32
For he went on his way rejoicing.
19:33
Why, he asks, did the Spirit of the Lord take him away? Because he was to pass through other cities also and preach the gospel.
19:34
So then this came to pass that he might afterward be marvelled at, so that men might reckon what concerned him to be not human but divine.
19:35
But Philip was found at Azotus, and passing through he preached the gospel to all the cities, until he came to Caesarea.
19:36
由此可見,這人是那七人中的一位;
And from this it is plain that this man is one of the seven;
19:37
for indeed he is afterward found there in Caesarea as well.
19:38
所以那靈把他提去,乃是有益處的,否則那太監必要求與他一同離去;
It was therefore to good purpose that the Spirit caught him away, since otherwise the eunuch would have thought it right to depart together with him;
19:39
and Philip would have grieved him by declining and refusing, since the time for that was not yet come.
19:40
你看見眾天使協助這傳道的工作,他們自己卻不傳道,只是呼召這些人去傳嗎?這事的希奇也正從此顯明出來;
Do you see the angels lending their aid to the preaching, yet not themselves preaching, but only summoning these men to do it? And the marvel of it is shown from this very thing as well;
19:41
for that which of old was rare and scarcely came to pass, this here comes to pass with great abundance.
19:42
In another way too, what had come to pass was a kind of foreannouncement that they would prevail over the Gentiles.
19:43
For indeed the trustworthiness of those who believed was sufficient to persuade the learners to be roused up to the like zeal themselves.
19:44
For this reason indeed he also went on his way rejoicing; so that, had he known, he would not have been glad.
19:45
But what, one asks, hindered him from learning everything exactly even while he was in the vehicle, and especially in the wilderness? Because the matter was not for display.
19:46
But let us examine the passages that have been read from the beginning.
19:47
'And behold,' it says, 'a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch, a man of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians.'
19:48
From this it is plain that they were ruled by her.
19:49
For indeed women held rule of old, and this was a custom among them.
19:50
Thus Philip did not know for what reason he had come into the wilderness, seeing that it is no longer an angel, but the Spirit that catches him away.
19:51
But the eunuch sees none of these things, being as yet imperfect—or else because these things belong not to the more carnal but to the more spiritual—nor indeed does he learn what Philip is taught.
19:52
And why does not the angel appear to him and lead him to Philip? Because perhaps he would not have been persuaded, but rather would have been the more astounded.
19:53
你要留意腓利的智慧;
Observe the wisdom of Philip;
19:54
他沒有責備,也沒有說;
he did not accuse, he did not say;
19:55
他沒有奉承,卻對他說;
he did not flatter, but said to him;
19:56
Thus his word was free both of boldness and of flattery, and rather full of care and love toward men.
19:57
For it behooved him to ask, it behooved him to long for it.
19:58
他這樣說,正顯明他知道那人一無所知;
And it shows that he knew that the other man knew nothing, by his saying;
19:59
'Understandest thou indeed what thou readest?'—and at the same time pointing out the great treasure that lay within.
19:60
But observe how prudently the eunuch too makes his answer.
19:61
他說:「沒有人指教我,我怎能明白呢?」他沒有看重外表,也沒有說;
'For how,' he says, 'could I, except some man should guide me?' He did not look at the outward appearance, he did not say;
19:62
「你是誰?」他沒有挑剔,沒有自誇,沒有自稱知道,反倒承認自己不明白;
'Who art thou?' he did not find fault, he does not boast, he does not claim to know, but confesses his ignorance;
19:63
他把傷口顯給醫生看;
he shows his wound to the physician;
19:64
he perceived that the other both knew these things and was willing to teach.
19:65
For indeed Philip bore no splendid outward appearance.
19:66
So ready was he to listen and so attentive to the words, that even the saying 'He that seeketh findeth' was fulfilled in him.
19:67
'And he besought Philip,' it says, 'that he would come up and sit with him.'
19:68
你看見他的殷勤嗎?你看見他的渴慕嗎?他請腓利上來與他同坐;
Do you see his diligence? Do you see his longing? He besought him to come up and sit together with him;
19:69
so little did he know what Philip was about to say to him, but supposed that he would simply hear some prophecy.
19:70
And this too was a greater honour, that he did not simply bring him up, but did so with an entreaty.
19:71
'And Philip ran up, and heard him reading.'
19:72
And the running was a sign of one willing to speak, and the reading a sign of diligence.
19:73
For he was reading at such a time as when the sun makes the heat more fierce.
19:74
'He was led as a sheep to the slaughter.'
19:75
And this too is a token of his love of learning, that he had in his hands this prophet, who is loftier than the rest.
19:76
因此腓利也不是猛烈地向他講解,乃是溫和地講;
Wherefore also Philip does not expound to him with vehemence, but gently;
19:77
或者說,在被問之先、在那人懇求之先,他連一句話也沒有先說;
or rather he does not even so much as utter a word beforehand, until he was asked, until the other besought him;
19:78
彷彿又作了同樣的事,他說;
as though doing the same thing again, he says;
19:79
「求你告訴我,先知說這話是指著誰呢?」在我看來,他不知道眾先知是論到別人說話;
'I pray thee, of whom does the prophet say this?' It seems to me that he did not know that the prophets speak concerning others;
19:80
or if not this, then he was ignorant that they discourse concerning themselves in the person of another.
19:81
Let us be ashamed, both poor and rich, before that treasurer.
19:82
後來他們來到一處有水的地方,他說;
Then they came to a certain water, and he says;
19:83
This was the mark of a soul exceedingly kindled.
19:84
「有甚麼攔阻我受浸呢?」你看見他的渴望嗎?他不說「給我施浸」,卻也不緘默;
'What hinders me from being baptized?' Do you see his desire? He does not say, 'Baptize me,' nor yet is he silent;
19:85
他乃是說出介乎渴望與敬畏之間的話,說;
but he utters something midway between desire and reverence, saying;
19:86
「有甚麼攔阻我受浸呢?」你看,他已經把這些道理領受得完全了;
'What hinders me from being baptized?' See how he had the doctrines complete;
19:87
因為那先知的書包含了一切——道成肉身、受苦、復活、升天,以及將要來的審判;
for indeed the prophet embraced all things—the incarnation, the passion, the resurrection, the ascension, the judgment that is to come;
19:88
which things indeed wrought in him an especially great desire.
19:89
Be ashamed, as many of you as remain unenlightened.
19:90
'And he commanded,' it says, 'the chariot to stand still.'
19:91
Ἅμα.
At one and the same moment he spoke and gave the order, before he had heard anything further.
19:92
'And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip.'
19:93
Well done, that what took place might be shown to be divine, and that the eunuch might not suppose that he was simply a man.
19:94
'And he went,' it says, 'on his way rejoicing.'
19:95
他這樣說,是要指明那太監若知道,就必憂愁;
This he said, showing that he would have been grieved, had he known;
19:96
so did he, by reason of his great joy—though he had been deemed worthy of the Spirit—not even perceive the things that were before him.
19:97
'And he was found,' it says, 'at Azotus.'
19:98
From this Philip too gained much.
19:99
For what he had heard concerning the prophets—concerning Habakkuk, concerning Ezekiel and the rest—he saw come to pass in his own case, being shown in an instant to have traversed a great distance, seeing that he was found at Azotus, and there thereafter he remains, where he also had to preach the gospel.
19:100
But Saul, still breathing out threats and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked from him letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
19:101
Opportunely he inserted the account of Paul's zeal, so as to show that it was in the very midst of that zeal that he was drawn.
19:102
For not yet sated with the murder of Stephen, nor filled with the persecution of the Church and its dispersion, he goes to the high priest.
19:103
Here is fulfilled the word spoken by Christ to the disciples: 'The hour comes, that whosoever kills you will think that he offers worship to God.'
19:104
Now this man acted thus, but not as the Jews did.
19:105
For that he acted out of zeal is plain from the fact that he even went off to cities outside.
19:106
But those men took no thought even for those in Jerusalem; they aimed at one thing only, to enjoy their honor.
19:107
But why did he journey to Damascus? It was a great city, a royal city.
19:108
He was afraid lest that city too should be taken beforehand by the faith.
19:109
And mark his longing and his vehemence, how he acted according to law.
19:110
He does not approach a magistrate, but the high priest.
19:111
He asks letters from him, so that if he should find any who were of the Way.
19:112
He calls the believers 'the Way,' by which name they were then so called by all, perhaps because they were cutting the way that leads to heaven.
19:113
But why did he not obtain authority to punish them there, but instead brings them to Jerusalem? So that here, with greater authority, he might carry out the punishments.
19:114
And mark into what danger he flung himself, and yet.
19:115
And even so he is afraid lest he should suffer some harm.
19:116
For this reason indeed he takes others also with him, thereby perhaps cutting short his fear.
19:117
Or also, since he was going against many, he takes many with him, so as to be the bolder: 'that whomsoever he might find, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.'
19:118
Besides, he also wished to show all of them by the journey that the whole affair was his own doing; so little did those others make this their earnest concern.
19:119
So little did those men make this their earnest concern.
19:120
And mark him casting into prison even before this.
19:121
Those men, then, had no power to do so, but this man had power, from his eagerness.
19:122
And as he journeyed, it came to pass that he drew near to Damascus.
19:123
And suddenly there shone round about him a light from heaven; and falling to the earth, he heard a voice saying to him:
19:124
'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?' (Section 3)
19:125
Why not in Jerusalem, why did it not happen in Damascus? So that others might not be able to narrate it in different ways, but that he himself, who was going off for this very purpose, might be a trustworthy narrator.
19:126
This indeed he says when making his defense before Agrippa also.
19:127
And he suffers also in his eyes, because an excess of light is wont to strike them.
19:128
For the eyes have their measure.
19:129
It is said that an excess of sound also makes men deaf and stupefied.
19:130
But him alone it blinded, and it quenched his rage by fear, so that he might hear the things spoken.
19:131
'Saul, Saul,' he says, 'why do you persecute me?' He does not say to him, 'Believe,' nor anything else of the kind, but reproaches him.
19:132
For by his reproach he all but says this:
19:133
'In what great or small thing have you been wronged by me, that you do these things?' And he said:
19:134
'Who are you, Lord?' Meanwhile he confessed himself a servant.
19:135
'I am Jesus, whom you persecute.'
19:136
'Do not think that your war is against men.'
19:137
And they that were with him heard indeed the voice of Paul, but they beheld no one to whom he was answering.
19:138
For he made them hearers of the lesser things.
19:139
For if they had heard that voice, they would perhaps have disbelieved.
19:140
But seeing Paul answering, they marveled.
19:141
But 'Arise, and enter into the city, and it shall be told you what you must do.'
19:142
Mark how he does not at once reveal all things to him, but only first softens his mind, and by the things he bids him do he straightway gives him good hopes, namely that he will recover his sight.
19:143
And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing indeed the voice, but beholding no one.
19:144
And Saul arose from the ground; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no one.
19:145
And leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus.
19:146
The devil's spoil, his vessels, they bring in, as when some city or metropolis has been captured.
19:147
And what is indeed wonderful, his very foes and enemies brought him in, while all were looking on.
19:148
And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
19:149
What could be equal to this? A counterweight to the despondency over Stephen becomes the winning-over of Paul, having in itself its own consolation—that he thus departed—but receiving this consolation too; and the villages of the Samaritans that were brought in afforded the greatest consolation.
19:150
'And why,' one asks, 'did this not happen from the beginning, but afterward?' In order that it might be shown that Christ truly rose.
19:151
因為那逼迫祂、不信祂之死與復活、又逼迫祂門徒的人——請告訴我,這人若非那被釘十字架者的能力極大,他怎能相信?就算那些人是在向他獻殷勤;
For he who drove him and disbelieved in his death and resurrection, and persecuted his disciples—this man, tell me, from where would he have believed, unless the strength of the Crucified had been great? Grant that those others were showing him favor;
19:152
what will you say concerning this man? Moreover, for this reason he came over after the resurrection, and not immediately, so that his war against Christ might be shown more clearly.
19:153
For he who so raged as even to pour out blood and to cast men into prison, all at once believes.
19:154
他從未與基督往來還不夠,還必須有信徒被他猛烈地攻擊;
It was not enough that he had not associated with Christ, but it was necessary also that the faithful should be warred upon vehemently by him;
19:155
他窮盡了瘋狂的一切極端;
he left no excess of madness untried;
19:156
he was more vehement than all.
19:157
但當他被使瞎了眼,那時他才認出基督之主權與慈愛的憑據;
But when he had been blinded, then he comes to know the tokens of Christ's lordship and of his lovingkindness;
19:158
or also, that no one might say that he was feigning.
19:159
For how could he—who longed for bloodshed, who went to the priests, who flung himself into dangers, and who drove out and punished those outside? This man, then, after all these things, confesses the lordship.
19:160
But why not within the city
19:161
被那光四面圍照,卻是在城前?因為眾人斷不會相信,反倒會譏笑;
was he encircled by the light, but before it? Because the many would not have believed, but would even have mocked;
19:162
就如那裡,當有聲音從上面傳來,聽見的人竟說那是打雷;
seeing that even there, when a voice was borne from above, those who heard it said that it was thunder;
19:163
but this man was trustworthy in reporting rather the things concerning himself.
19:164
And he was led in bound, though no bonds were placed about him, and they dragged him—him who had expected to drag the others.
19:165
But for what reason did he neither eat nor drink? He was condemning himself over what had happened, he was confessing, he was praying, he was entreating God.
19:166
But if someone should say that the matter was one of compulsion (for Elymas too suffered the same thing), we shall say:
19:167
Yes, he suffered it, but he remained as he was.
19:168
How then was he not compelled? And what is more compelling than the earthquake at the resurrection, than the soldiers who reported it, than the other signs, than seeing him risen? But these things are not compelling, but instructive.
19:169
Why did the Jews not believe when they heard these things? Because it was plain that he spoke the truth.
19:170
因為倘若這事未曾發生,他就不會被改變;
For he would not have been changed, had this not come to pass;
19:171
so that all ought to have believed.
19:172
He was no less than those who proclaimed His resurrection, but rather even more worthy of credit, having been so suddenly transformed.
19:173
He had consorted with none of the believers, but was changed in Damascus, or rather he underwent this even before reaching Damascus.
19:174
請告訴我,保羅是因何被改變的呢?他看見了那麼多神蹟,卻未被改變;
From what cause, tell me, was Paul changed? He had seen so many signs, and was not changed;
19:175
他的老師被改變了,而他自己卻未被改變;
his teacher was changed, and yet he himself was not changed;
19:176
who persuaded him? Or rather, who so suddenly cast into him such zeal, that he even prayed to become anathema for Christ's sake? The truth of the facts is manifest.
19:177
But, as I said, for the present let us be put to shame by the eunuch, both being illumined and reading.
19:178
Behold how great was his authority, how great his wealth, and yet not even on the road did he take his ease. Who then was this man that abode in his house, since not even on the roads did he endure to be idle? What manner of man was he by night?
19:179
As many of you as are in positions of dignity, hear this, and imitate his freedom from pride and his reverent piety.
19:180
And yet, though about to depart homeward, he did not say to himself:
19:181
'I am going away to my native land; there I shall receive the washing'—the cold words of the many.
19:182
他不需要神蹟,也不需要奇事;
He needed no signs, he needed no wonders;
19:183
from the prophet alone he believed.
19:184
For this reason Paul bewails himself, saying:
19:185
'But for this cause I obtained mercy, that being ignorant I did it in unbelief; and that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering.'
19:186
Truly this eunuch is worthy of admiration.
19:187
他未曾看見基督,也未曾看見神蹟;
He had not seen Christ, he had not seen a sign;
19:188
he still beheld Jerusalem standing, and yet he believed Philip.
19:189
Whence then did he become such a man? His soul was full of care, he gave heed to the Scriptures, he was diligent in his readings.
19:190
誠然,那強盜也曾看見神蹟,博士也曾看見星;
And yet the robber too saw signs, and the magi saw a star;
19:191
但這人卻甚麼這類的事都未曾看見,卻依然相信了;
but this man saw nothing of the kind, and yet he believed;
19:192
so profitable a thing is the reading of the Scriptures!
19:193
What then of Paul? Did he not study the Law? But it seems to me that he was purposely deferred, for the reasons I mentioned earlier, because Christ willed by every means to draw the Jews to Himself.
19:194
For if they had understanding, nothing would have profited them so much as this.
19:195
因為這事比神蹟、比一切更足以吸引他們;
For this, more than signs and all else, was sufficient to draw them;
19:196
just as, on the other hand, nothing is so apt to offend the grosser sort.
19:197
Observe then, that after the dispersion of the apostles, God too works the signs.
19:198
猶太人控告使徒,把他們下在監裡;
The Jews accused the apostles, and cast them into prison;
19:199
thereafter God works wonders.
19:200
把他們從監裡領出來,這是祂的神蹟;
The bringing them forth from the prison was His sign;
19:201
引領腓利,這是祂的神蹟;
the leading of Philip was His sign;
19:202
使保羅歸向祂自己,這是祂的神蹟;
the bringing of Paul to Himself was His sign;
19:203
the showing of Himself to Stephen was His sign.
19:204
And consider how Paul is honoured, and how the eunuch.
19:205
Here Christ Himself appears, perhaps because of his hardness, and because he would not otherwise have been persuaded.
19:206
Let us too, dwelling upon these wonders, prepare ourselves to be worthy.
19:207
如今許多人即使進了教會,也不曉得所講的是甚麼;
Many now, even when they enter the church, do not know what is being said;
19:208
but the eunuch, even in the market-place and while being carried in his chariot, gave heed to the reading of the Scriptures.
19:209
For not one of you has a book in his hands, but everything rather than the book.
19:210
But why does He not see him before the events at Jerusalem, but
19:211
在那之後呢?他不該看見使徒被逼迫,因為他當時還軟弱;
afterward? He ought not to have seen the apostles being persecuted, because of his weakness as yet;
19:212
nor was it before so easy as when the prophet had instructed him.
19:213
如今也是這樣,你們中間若有人肯留意先知的話,他就不需要神蹟了;
So also now, if any of you were willing to give heed to the prophets, he would not need signs;
19:214
and if you please, let us look at the prophecy itself, what it says.
19:215
'He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and in His humiliation His judgment was taken away.'
19:216
他從這裡得知祂被釘了十字架,祂的生命從地上被奪去;
From this he learned that He was crucified, that His life is taken away from the earth;
19:217
祂並未犯罪,祂也有能力拯救別人,祂的世代無人能述說,磐石崩裂,幔子裂開,死人從墳墓裡復活;
that He did no sin, that He had power to save others also, that His generation is unutterable, that rocks were rent, that the veil was torn, that the dead were raised from the tombs;
19:218
or rather, Philip told him all these things, having merely taken his starting-point from the prophet.
19:219
Truly a great thing is the reading of the Scriptures.
19:220
Thus was that fulfilled which was spoken by Moses:
19:221
'When thou sittest, and liest down, and risest up, and walkest by the way, remember the Lord thy God.'
19:222
For roads especially, when they are deserted, give us leisure for our thoughts, there being nothing to disturb us.
19:223
這人在路上信了,保羅也在路上信了;
And this man believes on the road, and Paul on the road;
19:224
but no one draws this man, save Christ Himself.
19:225
這事比臨到使徒的更大;
This was something greater than what befell the apostles;
19:226
而更要緊的一點是:當使徒都在耶路撒冷、他們中間無一人在大馬士革之時,他卻已經被說服,正從那裡回來;
and the greater point is this, that while the apostles were in Jerusalem, and none of them was in Damascus, he was returning thence already persuaded;
19:227
在大馬士革的人也知道,他並不是從耶路撒冷帶著已被說服的心而來的;
and those in Damascus knew that he had not come persuaded from Jerusalem;
19:228
for he was carrying letters, so as to bind those who believed.
19:229
如同一位最高明的醫生,趁著熱病正發到極盛的時候,基督就對他施用了治療;
Like a most excellent physician, while the fever was still at its height, Christ applied the remedy to him;
19:230
for it was needful that he should be seized in the very midst of his raging.
19:231
Then most of all did he fall down, and condemn himself, as one who had dared dreadful things.
19:232
But again it is good to take up the discourse afresh with you.
19:233
For what purpose, tell me, are the Scriptures? For, as far as your part is concerned, everything is done away with.
19:234
教會又是為著甚麼呢?把書卷埋了吧;
For what purpose the church? Bury the books;
19:235
perhaps that would not be so great a condemnation, not so great a punishment.
19:236
If one were to bury them in dung, and not to hear them, he would not so insult them as men do now.
19:237
For what, tell me, is the insult there? That he buried them.
19:238
And what here? That we do not hear them.
19:239
Tell me, who is most of all insulted? He that is silent and gets no answer, or he that is speaking? Assuredly he that is speaking.
19:240
So then the insult is greater now, when you will not so much as listen even while He is speaking; the contempt is greater.
19:241
古時的猶太人曾對眾先知說:「不要向我們說話」;
'Do not speak to us,' the Jews said of old to the prophets;
19:242
but you do a worse thing, saying:
19:243
那些人固然叫先知連話都不要說,彷彿單從那聲音他們便會領受某種敬畏的緣由;
Those men indeed turned them away that they might not even speak, as though from the very voice they were receiving some occasion for reverence;
19:244
but you, out of great contempt, do not even do this.
19:245
Believe me, if you had stopped up our mouths, laying your hands upon them, the insult would not have been so great as it is now.
19:246
For tell me: he who hears and is not persuaded—does he show greater contempt, or he who will not even hear? (5)
19:247
But come, let us examine the matter as a case of insult:
19:248
假如一個人抓住那侮辱他的人、堵住他的口,好像因那侮辱而覺得痛苦;另一個人卻毫不在意、也全不理會,這兩人中哪一個更輕慢?豈不是後者嗎?因為前者至少顯明他是受了打擊;
If one man should restrain the person insulting him and silence him as one pained by the insults, while another should neither care nor take any notice at all, which of the two shows the greater contempt? Is it not the latter? For the former at least makes it plain that he receives a blow;
19:249
but this man all but stops up the mouth of God.
19:250
Did you shudder at what was said? But hear also how this comes to pass.
19:251
The mouth through which God speaks is the mouth of God.
19:252
因為正如這口是我們魂的口,儘管魂本身並沒有口;
For just as this mouth is the mouth of our soul, though the soul has no mouth of its own,
19:253
so also the mouth of the prophets is the mouth of God.
19:254
A common minister, the deacon stands crying aloud and saying:
19:255
That voice is the common voice of the Church, which this man utters, and no one gives heed.
19:256
在他之後,讀經者開始誦讀以賽亞的預言;
After him the reader begins the prophecy of Isaiah;
19:257
and not even so does anyone give heed, although prophecy has nothing human in it.
19:258
Then he cries out for all to hear, saying, 'Thus says the Lord,' and not even so does anyone give heed.
19:259
What am I saying? He recounts things fearful and terrifying, and not even so is there anyone who gives heed.
19:260
But what is the plea of the multitude? 'It is always the same things that are read,' they say.
19:261
This is the very thing that most of all destroys you.
19:262
因為你們若真曉得這些事,最要緊的是,你們即便如此也不該置身事外;
For if indeed you knew these things, most assuredly not even so ought you to hold aloof;
19:263
since in the theatres too it is always the same things
19:264
that take place, and yet you do not grow sated.
19:265
How dare you say they are the same things, you who do not so much as know the names of the prophets? Are you not ashamed to say that you do not listen because it is always the same things that are read, when you do not even know the names of what is read, and this though you are always hearing the same things? For you yourself have admitted that the same things are spoken.
19:266
If I were bringing this forward by way of accusation, you would have had to resort to some other defence, not to your own self-accusation.
19:267
請告訴我,你不勸勉你自己的兒子嗎?他若說:「總是同樣的話」,你豈不認為這是一種侮辱嗎?惟有在我們既已曉得那些事、又藉行為表明出來的時候,才可以不再重複同樣的話;
Tell me, do you not exhort your own son? If then he should say, 'It is always the same things,' would you not consider it an insult? It would have been permissible not to repeat the same things at the time when we both knew them and demonstrated them by our deeds;
19:268
or rather, not even then is the reading superfluous.
19:269
What is equal to Timothy? Yet nevertheless, even to him Paul wrote, saying:
19:270
'Give heed to reading, to exhortation.'
19:271
因為要把聖經的意義窮盡,那是不能、斷不能的事;
For it is not, it is not possible ever to exhaust the meaning of the Scriptures;
19:272
it is a fountain that has no bound.
19:273
'I said, I have become wise,' he says, 'and then it departed from me.'
19:274
Do you wish me to show that they are not the same things? How many do you suppose have spoken concerning the Gospels? Yet all of these have spoken in strange and novel ways.
19:275
For the more one dwells upon them, the more keenly he sees, the more he beholds the pure light.
19:276
甚麼是預言?請告訴我;
What is prophecy? Tell me;
19:277
甚麼是敘事?甚麼是比喻?甚麼是寓意?甚麼是預表?甚麼是表徵?甚麼是福音書?你們只要告訴我這一件明顯的事:為甚麼稱它們為福音(好信息)?可是你們也常聽見,福音書裡本不該有甚麼令人愁苦的事;
what are narratives? what is a parable? what is an allegory? what is a type? what is a symbol? what are Gospels? Just tell me this one obvious thing: why are they called Gospels? And yet you have often heard that the Gospels ought to have nothing gloomy in them;
19:278
yet these are full of much gloom.
19:279
經上說:「他們的火是不滅的,他們的蟲是不死的」;
'Their fire shall not be quenched,' it says, 'and their worm shall not die';
19:280
還有那句:「把他腰斬了,定他和假冒為善的人同罪」;
and the saying, 'He shall cut him asunder, and shall appoint his portion with the hypocrites';
19:281
'I know you not; depart from me, you that work iniquity.'
19:282
Surely then we are not deceiving ourselves, supposing that these things are being spoken to us in Greek?
19:283
Or is none of this addressed to us? You have been deafened, and, as though struck senseless, you bow your heads downward.
19:284
福音書本該不含甚麼當行之事,只該勸人行善;
The Gospels ought to contain nothing of things to be done, but only to counsel good things;
19:285
然而這些書卻含有無數當行之事;
yet these contain countless things to be done;
19:286
such as also are the following:
19:287
「人若不恨自己的父母,就不配作我的門徒」;
'If anyone hate not his own father and mother, he is not worthy of me';
19:288
又如:「我來並不是叫地上太平,乃是叫地上動刀兵」;
and, 'I came not to cast peace upon the earth, but a sword';
19:289
and, 'In the world you shall have tribulation.'
19:290
因為這就是福音;
For this is the Gospel;
19:291
just as also in common usage men say to one another:
19:292
'What good news have I for you? Your father is coming, your mother.'
19:293
請你再告訴我,這些書與先知的書卷有甚麼分別?為甚麼那些不也稱為福音呢?因為那些書所說的也是同樣的事;
Again tell me, in what do these differ from the prophetic writings? Why are not those also called Gospels? For those too say the same things;
19:294
例如:「瘸子必跳躍像鹿」;
for instance, 'The lame man shall leap as a hart';
19:295
「主賜下話語給那些傳好信息的人」;
'The Lord shall give a word to those who bring good tidings';
19:296
'I will give you a new heaven and a new earth.'
19:297
Why are not those also called Gospels? Why is not this too called prophecy? But if, not even knowing what the Gospels are, you thus despise the reading of the Scriptures,
19:298
what shall I say to you? Let me say yet one thing more:
19:299
Why are there four Gospels? Why not ten? Why not twenty? Why did not many undertake to compose Gospels? Why not one? Why the disciples? Why those who were not disciples? And why the Scriptures at all? Yet the Old Testament says the contrary:
19:300
'I will give you a new covenant.'
19:301
Where are those who say, 'It is always the same things'? If you knew these things—that, even if a man live ten thousand years, they are not the same things—you would not have said this.
19:302
請相信我,這些事我一件也不告訴你們,無論是私下或是公開的;
Believe me, I will tell you none of these things, neither privately nor in common;
19:303
但你們中間若有人尋出答案來,我就點頭認可;
but if any one of you find it out, I will assent;
19:304
For thus have we made you useless, always saying everything for you ready-made, and not withholding assent when we ought.
19:305
看哪,你們有足夠的問題了;
Behold, you have questions enough;
19:306
consider, tell me the reason.
19:307
為甚麼是福音書?為甚麼不是先知的預言?為甚麼那當行之事列在福音書裡?這人若答不出來,就讓另一人來探究,你們也要把各自所有的彼此供獻出來;
Why Gospels? Why not prophecies? Why the things to be done in the Gospels? And if this man be at a loss, let another inquire, and contribute to one another what is your own;
19:308
and for the rest, we will keep silence.
19:309
For if the things that have been said have profited you nothing, much less would there be any profit even if we should add others.
19:310
In truth we are drawing water into a pierced jar; and for this reason your punishment will be the greater.
19:311
Shall we then for this cause keep silence?
19:312
That this may not come to pass rests with you; you are the masters of it.
19:313
For if we behold your zeal,
19:314
或許我們還要再講論,好叫你們更加蒙悅納,我們也可因你們而歡喜,凡事將榮耀歸與我們主耶穌基督的神與父;
perhaps we shall speak again, that you too may be the more approved, and that we also may rejoice over you, glorifying in all things the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ;
19:315
to whom be the glory, and the might, and the majesty, and the honour, together with the Father who is without beginning, and His Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
