'But there stood up one in the council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, held in honour by all the people, and commanded to put the men outside for a little while.'
14:2
This Gamaliel was Paul's teacher.
14:3
And it is worthy of wonder how, though possessing sound judgment and being learned in the law, he had not yet believed.
14:4
But it is not possible that he should have remained unbelieving to the end.
14:5
And this is plain from the words in which he gives his counsel.
14:6
'For he commanded,' it says, 'to put the men outside for a little while.'
14:7
Observe the shrewdness of his address, and how at once he cast them into fear.
14:8
And that he might not be suspected of holding with the apostles, he speaks as to men of the same mind with himself, and does not use much vehemence, but addresses them as men drunk with rage, saying thus:
14:9
'Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you are about to do with regard to these men.'
14:10
Do not, he says, act rashly, nor at random.
14:11
「從前丟大起來,自稱是個人物,附從他的人約有四百;
'For before these days rose up Theudas, claiming to be somebody, to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves;
14:12
and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing.'
14:13
He brings them to soberness by examples, and mentions afterwards the one who drew away the greater number, thereby soothing them.
14:14
所以在舉例之前,他先說:「你們應當小心」;
Before giving the examples, then, he says, 'Take heed to yourselves';
14:15
but when he has shown them, he declares his judgment, saying:
14:16
'And now I say to you, Refrain from these men.'
14:17
「此後,報名上冊的時候,又有加利利人猶大起來,引誘許多百姓跟從他;
'After him rose up Judas the Galilean in the days of the census, and drew away a considerable people after him;
14:18
he also perished, and all who obeyed him were scattered.'
14:19
「現在我勸你們:不要管這些人,任憑他們吧;
'And now I say to you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone;
14:20
因為這謀略、這工作若是出於人,必要敗壞;
for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown;
14:21
but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it.'
14:22
Hold back, he says; and if these men too have banded together of themselves, nothing will hinder them also from being overthrown.
14:23
'Lest perhaps you be found even fighting against God.'
14:24
Both by the impossibility and by the inexpediency of the thing he dissuades them.
14:25
He did not say by whom those men were destroyed, but simply that they were scattered—perhaps as being beside the point.
14:26
他藉著所提示的教導他們:這工作若是出於人,你們就毫不費事;
But by what he suggests he teaches them: If the work is of men, you will need no trouble at all;
14:27
but if it is divine, not even with all your efforts will you be able to prevail against it.
14:28
Thus at any rate the speech seemed judicious, so that they were even persuaded not to kill them, but only to scourge them.
14:29
經上說:「公會的人聽從了他」;
'For they were persuaded by him,' it says;
14:30
'and having called the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.'
14:31
See after how many miracles they are scourged!
14:32
然而教訓的工作反而更加擴展;
And yet again the teaching was extended still further;
14:33
for indeed they taught both in the house and in the temple.
14:34
'They then went their way rejoicing from the presence of the council, because they had been counted worthy to suffer dishonour for the name of Christ; and every day in the temple'
14:35
'and from house to house they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus Christ.'
14:36
'Now in those days, when the disciples were multiplying, there arose a murmuring of the Hellenists against the Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily ministration.'
14:37
他並不是嚴格地指就在那幾天;
He does not mean precisely in those very days;
14:38
but since it is the custom of Scripture to speak also of things about to happen as though occurring in immediate sequence, for this reason he spoke thus.
14:39
我認為,他所稱的「說希臘話的人」,是指那些以希臘語說話的人;
By 'Hellenists' I suppose he means those who spoke in Greek;
14:40
for these, though they were Hebrews, conversed in Greek.
14:41
Behold yet another trial!
14:42
Rather, if you are willing to consider the matter, you too will see that from the very beginning the wars were both from within and from without.
14:43
'And the twelve,' he says, 'called the multitude of the disciples to them, and said:'
14:44
'It is not fitting that we should forsake the word of God and serve tables.'
14:45
For among things necessary, the more necessary are the more to be preferred.
14:46
But observe how at once they take thought even for these things, and yet do not neglect the preaching.
14:47
Now those men were the more worthy of reverence, and for this reason they are also given the preference.
14:48
'Look you out therefore, brethren, from among you seven men of good report, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.'
14:49
'But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word.'
14:50
'And the saying pleased the whole multitude.'
14:51
'And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.'
14:52
Those, then, whom they chose were also full of faith, so that there might not happen the same things as befell Judas, and as befell Ananias and Sapphira.
14:53
'And Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus a proselyte of Antioch: whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.'
14:54
'And the word of the Lord increased, and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly;'
14:55
'and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.'
14:56
But let us look again at what has been said from the beginning.
14:57
Men, take heed to yourselves.
14:58
Consider, I pray, how Gamaliel here reasons with them with all forbearance, and goes through but few matters before them, and does not tell old stories—though he might have done so—but recent ones, which were especially strong for producing belief.
14:59
Wherefore also he hints at the matter with concealment, saying:
14:60
'For before these days;'
14:61
all but showing that it was not long before.
14:62
因此,他若一開口便說「任憑這些人吧」,他自己就會顯得可疑,他的論據也就不會有力;
If, then, he had said at once, 'Let the men go,' he himself would have seemed suspect, and his argument thus would not have been strong;
14:63
but with the examples his argument took its own proper force.
14:64
For this reason he mentions not one only, but a second also—though he might have told a third as well—showing out of his abundance both that he himself spoke well, and leading them away from their murderous purpose.
14:65
'Refrain from these men.'
14:66
See how forbearing his character is.
14:67
他的話語並不冗長,而是簡明扼要;
And he makes his speech not long, but concise;
14:68
nor does he mention those men with anger.
14:69
'And all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered.'
14:70
In saying this he in no way blasphemes against Christ, but rather accomplishes precisely what he intends.
14:71
'If it be of men,' he says, 'it will be overthrown.'
14:72
Here he seems to me both to reason with them and to say:
14:73
'Therefore, since it was not overthrown, it is not of human origin.'
14:74
'Lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.'
14:75
This he said, restraining them by the impossibility and the unprofitableness of the thing.
14:76
'But if it be of God, ye will not be able.'
14:77
他沒有說「基督若是神」;
He did not say, 'If Christ be God;'
14:78
因為那工作本身已將此顯明了;
for the work itself made this manifest;
14:79
nor did he pronounce that it is not of human origin, nor that it is divine, but he committed the belief to the time to come, so as to persuade them.
14:80
有人問道:他既說服了他們,為何他們還鞭打使徒呢?對於那無可辯駁、合乎公義的申辯,他們原是無言以對的;
And if he persuaded them, why then, one asks, did they scourge the apostles? Against the incontrovertible justness of the plea they had nothing to oppose;
14:81
然而他們仍舊發洩自己的怒氣;
yet nonetheless they gave vent to their own anger;
14:82
and besides, they expected once more by this means to strike fear.
14:83
而他在使徒不在場時說這些話,就更把他們吸引到自己這邊;
And by speaking these things in the absence of the apostles, he drew them the more to himself;
14:84
and the sweetness of his words, and the justice of what was said, prevailed with them.
14:85
因為這人也幾乎是在傳講福音了;
For this man too all but preached the Gospel;
14:86
or rather, all but pleading such a cause, he directs his words at them:
14:87
'Ye have been persuaded that ye had not power to overthrow it.'
14:88
Why did ye not believe? So great is the preaching, that even from its enemies comes its witness!
14:89
在那裡有四百人起來,此後又有相當大的一群人;
There four hundred rose up, and after that a considerable throng;
14:90
here the first were twelve.
14:91
'Let not, then, the multitude that has been added dismay you.'
14:92
'For if this work be of men, it will be overthrown.'
14:93
He might have named yet another, the Egyptian, but his speech would then have been superfluous.
14:94
你看見他如何用那可畏之事來收束他的論證嗎?因此他也不直接斷言,免得顯出他是在為他們說話;
You see how he shut up his argument with what is fearful? Wherefore also he does not pronounce outright, lest he should seem to speak on their behalf;
14:95
but he reasons from the outcome of the matter.
14:96
但他不敢斷言這事不是出於人的,也不斷言它是出於神的;
But he did not venture to pronounce that it is not of human origin, nor that it is of God;
14:97
因為他若說這是出於神的,他們就會反駁他;
since, if he had said that it is of God, they would have gainsaid him;
14:98
and if that it is of men, they would again have been ready to rise up against it.
14:99
For this reason he bids them await the end, saying:
14:100
But they threaten once more, knowing indeed that they accomplish nothing, yet doing their own part.
14:101
For such is wickedness: it often sets its hand to things impossible.
14:102
'And after this man rose up Judas.'
14:103
這些事,你們若細讀約瑟夫的著作,就必更為確切地明白;
These things you will learn more accurately by poring over the books of Josephus;
14:104
for he, in compiling the history of these events, records them with exactness.
14:105
You see how bold a thing he ventured to say, that 'It is of God,' when he had at length taken his conviction from the facts themselves.
14:106
Truly great was his boldness of speech, great his freedom from respect of persons.
14:107
'And when they had called the apostles, they beat them and let them go.'
14:108
They stood in awe of the man's glory.
14:109
因此,他們便打消了處死使徒的念頭;
For this reason they draw back from putting the apostles to death;
14:110
and having only scourged them, they let them go.
14:111
So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name of Christ.
14:112
How much more marvelous is this than any number of miracles!
14:113
這在古時是從未有過的事;
Nowhere in the days of old did this ever come to pass;
14:114
耶利米也曾為神的話被鞭打,他們也威嚇以利亞,以及其餘的人;
for Jeremiah too was scourged for the word of God, and they threatened Elijah, and the others as well;
14:115
but here, by this very thing—and not by the miracles alone—they displayed the power of God.
14:116
He did not say that they felt no pain, but that even while suffering pain they rejoiced.
14:117
這從何得知呢?從他們此後所顯出的膽量便可知道;
Whence is this plain? From the boldness which they showed thereafter;
14:118
for thus they stood firm ever afterward, preaching even after the stripes.
14:119
Wherefore, declaring this also, he says: In the temple and in every house they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
14:120
And in these days—
14:121
In what days? When these things were taking place, when there were scourgings, when there were threats, when the disciples were multiplying—then it was that a murmuring arose.
14:122
這或許正是因人數眾多而發生的;
It came about, perhaps, from the very multitude;
14:123
for it is not possible that exactness should be preserved in a multitude.
14:124
And a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
14:125
This is spoken by way of intimation, and to show that from the very quarters whence the death of Christ was contrived, from these many came to believe.
14:126
There arose, he says, a murmuring, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily ministration.
14:127
So then there was a daily ministration to the widows.
14:128
也要留意,這人也稱之為供給,而不輕易稱之為施捨;
And observe how this man too calls it a ministration, and does not readily call it almsgiving;
14:129
at the same time exalting by this both those who give and those who receive.
14:130
This was not the result of malice, but perhaps of the negligence that attends a multitude.
14:131
Therefore he also brought it out into the midst (for it was no small evil), that it might speedily be set right.
14:132
Do you see how, even in the beginning, evils were not only from without, but also from within? But do not merely notice this, that it was set right, but that it was a great evil.
14:133
Look out among yourselves, brethren, seven men.
14:134
They do not act on their own private judgment, but first render account to the multitude.
14:135
So ought it to be done now also.
14:136
It is not fitting, he says, that we should leave the word of God and serve tables.
14:137
他首先提出這事的不相宜,表明兩樣事不可能都殷勤兼顧;
First he sets forth the incongruity, showing that it is impossible for both to be done with diligence;
14:138
since even when they were about to ordain Matthias, they first showed the need of the matter, namely that one was lacking, and that there had to be twelve.
14:139
在這裡他們也照樣顯明了那需要;
And here also they made the need manifest;
14:140
and neither did they act beforehand, but waited until the murmuring arose, nor yet did they suffer this to go on for long.
14:141
And observe, they commit the decision to them, and put forward those who were pleasing to all and testified to by all.
14:142
當要推選馬提亞的時候,他們說:必須是那些從始至終與我們常在一起的人;
Now when Matthias had to be put forward, they said: It is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time;
14:143
for that matter was not of such a kind.
14:144
因此他們既沒有用抽籤來定這事,雖然他們自己受聖靈感動就能揀選,卻也沒有這樣行;
Wherefore they did not commit it to the lot, nor again, though they were able themselves to choose being moved by the Spirit, do they do this;
14:145
rather, they establish what seemed good on the strength of the testimony of the many.
14:146
定人數、按手設立,以及與這需要相關的事,乃是屬於使徒的;
To determine the number, and to ordain, and what pertained to such a need, was theirs;
14:147
而揀選那些人,他們卻交託給那些人,免得顯出自己是在徇情偏袒;
but the choosing of the men they entrust to those others, that they themselves might not seem to be showing favor;
14:148
since God too commits to Moses the choosing of elders whom he knew.
14:149
For indeed there is need of much wisdom in such administrations.
14:150
你不要以為,既然沒有將傳道的職分交託給這樣的人,這樣的人就不需要智慧了;
For do not suppose that, because the word has not been entrusted to him, such a man has no need of wisdom;
14:151
But we, he says, will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.
14:152
Both at the beginning and at the end they render their account.
14:153
For so it behooved—not carelessly nor as it might chance, but to give oneself wholly to it.
14:154
And the saying, he says, pleased the whole multitude.
14:155
And this too was worthy of their wisdom.
14:156
眾人都稱許所說的話;
All approved of what was said;
14:157
他說:他們就揀選了(又是他們自己揀選)司提反,乃是大有信心、聖靈充滿的人,又揀選腓利、伯羅哥羅、尼迦挪、提門、巴米拿,並進猶太教的安提阿人尼哥拉;
And they chose, he says (again it is they themselves who choose), Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch;
14:158
whom they set before the apostles.
14:159
And having prayed, they laid their hands upon them.
14:160
From this it is plain that they separated them from the multitude, and it is they themselves who draw them forth, not the apostles who bring them.
14:161
你看這位作者處處毫不冗贅;
Observe how the writer is nowhere superfluous;
14:162
因為他沒有說怎樣按立,只單單說他們是藉著禱告受按立的;
for he does not say how, but simply that they were ordained through prayer;
14:163
for this is what ordination is.
14:164
The hand of the man is laid upon him, but God works the whole, and it is His hand that touches the head of the one being ordained, if the ordination be performed as it ought.
14:165
And the word of God, he says, increased, and the number of the disciples multiplied.
14:166
He did not say this without reason, but to show how great is the might of almsgiving and of good ordering.
14:167
如今他要開始敘述有關司提反的事;
And now he is about to relate the things concerning Stephen;
14:168
因此他也先陳明這些事的緣由;
wherefore he also sets forth beforehand the causes of these things;
14:169
And many, he says, of the priests were obedient to the faith.
14:170
For when they saw the ruler and teacher declaring these things, thereafter they took proof of it from the works.
14:171
And it is worthy of admiration, how the multitude was not divided in the choosing of the men, how the apostles were not rejected by them.
14:172
But what sort of dignity these men had, and what kind of ordination they received, it is necessary to learn.
14:173
難道是執事的職分嗎?然而這在眾教會中並不存在,那治理的職務乃是屬於長老的;
Was it then that of deacons? And yet this does not exist in the Churches, but the administration is that of the presbyters;
14:174
and yet as yet no one was a bishop, but only the apostles.
14:175
由此我想,無論是執事或長老的名稱,都還不是清楚明確的;
Whence I think that neither the name of deacons nor of presbyters was clear and manifest;
14:176
but for the time being they were ordained unto this.
14:177
And they were not simply entrusted with it, but prayer was made that power might come upon them.
14:178
But consider with me: if seven men were needed for this, so much money, it seems, flowed in, so great was the multitude of widows.
14:179
So then, the prayers were not offered carelessly, but with much leisure and attention.
14:180
And this, like the preaching, was accomplished in the same way; for by means of these very prayers they accomplished the greater part.
14:181
For it was by these prayers that they brought most things to pass.
14:182
Thus were spiritual matters decided; thus too were men sent forth on their journeys; and thus were these entrusted with the word.
14:183
And he does not say it, nor does he exalt them, but he shows that to forsake the work given to them was not pleasing.
14:184
In this way they had been trained by Moses not to take everything into their own hands.
14:185
For this reason Paul also says, 'Only that we should remember the poor.'
14:186
And how they also promoted these men, learn this.
14:187
They fasted, they continued steadfastly in prayer.
14:188
This ought to be done even now.
14:189
And he did not say merely 'spiritual men,' but 'full of the Spirit and of wisdom,' showing that it required great wisdom of soul to bear the complaints of widows.
14:190
For what profit is there, when a man does not steal, yet wastes everything? Or when he is rash and easily provoked? In this respect too Philip was admirable.
14:191
'And entering into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we abode with him.'
14:192
Do you see that nothing was managed after a merely human fashion? 'And the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem.'
14:193
In Jerusalem the multitude increased.
14:194
The wonder is that, where Christ was slain, there the preaching grew.
14:195
門徒中不但沒有一個人跌倒,儘管他們看見使徒中有些被鞭打,有些被恐嚇,有些被聖靈試驗,還有些發怨言;
And not only were none of the disciples caused to stumble, seeing some of the apostles scourged, others threatened, others tempted by the Spirit, and yet others murmuring;
14:196
but rather there were even more added to their number.
14:197
Thus by what happened concerning Ananias they were sobered, and greater fear came upon them.
14:198
But observe for me how the multitude increased.
14:199
After the trials, then it increased, not before them.
14:200
And consider too how great was the loving-kindness of God.
14:201
For from among those chief priests who were inciting the crowds to murder, who were shouting and saying such things as these:
14:202
'He saved others; himself he cannot save'—
14:203
from these, he says, 'Many were obedient to the faith.'
14:204
Let us therefore also become imitators of Him.
14:205
He received them, and did not cast them out.
14:206
In this way let us repay our enemies, who have wrought against us countless grievous wrongs.
14:207
我們無論有甚麼好處,都當分給他們;
Whatever good we may have, let us bestow it upon them;
14:208
let us not pass them by without doing them good.
14:209
因為我們若當藉著受苦來止息他們的怒氣,就更當藉著向他們行善來止息了;
For if by suffering evil we must satiate their wrath, much more by doing them good;
14:210
for this is a lesser thing than that.
14:211
因為向仇敵行善,與甘願忍受比自己所當受的更大之苦,這二者並不相同;
For it is not the same thing to do good to an enemy, and to be willing to suffer even greater ills than one is called to endure;
14:212
from this we shall arrive at that also.
14:213
This is the mark of dignity belonging to the disciples of Christ.
14:214
They crucified Him when He came for their benefit, they scourged His disciples, and after these things He leads them into the same honour as the disciples, imparting to them alike of what is His own.
14:215
弟兄們,我懇求你們,我們要效法基督;
Let us become imitators of Christ, I beseech you;
14:216
因為正是在這一點上,我們才可能效法祂;
for in this it is possible to imitate Him;
14:217
this makes one equal to God, this is something greater than what belongs to man.
14:218
This is the tutor and teacher of that heavenly wisdom.
14:219
凡學會憐憫遭遇患難之人的,也必學會不記人的仇怨;
He who has learned to pity the man in misfortune will learn also not to bear a grudge;
14:220
he who has learned this will be able also to do good to his enemies.
14:221
Let us learn to be broken with compassion at our neighbours' ills, and we shall learn also to bear their evils against us.
14:222
Let us ask the very man who has treated us ill, whether he does not condemn himself, whether he would not wish to act wisely, whether he does not say that the whole thing is a matter of anger, of small-mindedness, of wretchedness, whether he would not rather be among those who are insulted and keep silence, than among those who insult and rage, whether he does not depart marvelling at the one who suffered the wrong.
14:223
Do not then suppose that this makes men contemptible.
14:224
沒有甚麼比施辱於人更使人被人輕看的了;
Nothing makes men so contemptible as to insult others;
14:225
nothing makes them so worthy of reverence as to bear being insulted.
14:226
因為前者是個施辱者,後者卻是個愛智慧的人;
For the one is an insolent man, but the other a lover of wisdom;
14:227
and the one is worse than a man, but the other equal to the angels.
14:228
For even if he were weaker than the one insulting him, yet even so, if he wished, he had it in his power to retaliate.
14:229
And besides, this man is pitied by all, but that one is hated.
14:230
What then? Will not this man by this very means be far the better? For all will attend to the one as to a madman, but to the other as to a man of sense.
14:231
Whenever, then, someone compels you to speak ill of another, say to him:
14:232
「我不能說他的壞話;
'I cannot speak ill of him;
14:233
for I am afraid lest perhaps he were not such a man.'
14:234
最要緊的是,你連在心思裏也不要說;
Above all, do not even say it in your mind;
14:235
不要為著他向神控告求告;
do not entreat God against him;
14:236
你若看見有人被人惡言中傷,就當為他辯護;
if you see one being ill spoken of, defend him;
14:237
你要說:這些話是出於一時的激動,不是出於這人;
say, the words are of passion, not of the man;
14:238
say, they are of anger, not of the friend.
14:239
Let us reason thus in the case of each of the sins.
14:240
不要等到火燒起來,乃要在此之前就把它抑制住;
Do not wait for the fire to be kindled, but before this restrain it;
14:241
不要激怒那野獸,甚至也不要容它被激動;
do not provoke the wild beast, but do not even allow it to be provoked;
14:242
for you are no longer master to restrain it, once the flame is kindled.
14:243
他說了甚麼呢?「愚昧無知的人」嗎?那麼,誰該為這句話負責,是聽的人呢,還是說的人呢?因為說的人,就算他極其有智慧,也已給自己取了愚人的名聲;
For what did he say? 'Fool and senseless'? Who then is answerable for the word, the one who hears it, or the one who speaks it? For the latter, even though he be exceedingly wise, has taken to himself the reputation of a fool;
14:244
but the former, even though he be foolish, has gained that of a wise man and a lover of wisdom.
14:245
Which is the foolish one, tell me, the one who reproaches another with things that are not so, or the one who is not even moved by it? For if not to be moved even when moved is a mark of wisdom,
14:246
then to be smitten when no one is even striking—how great is the folly of that!
14:247
I do not yet speak of what place of punishment is laid up for those who thus reproach and blaspheme their neighbour.
14:248
But what? Did he call him dishonoured and sprung from dishonoured men, and worthless and sprung from worthless men? Again he has turned the reproach back upon himself.
14:249
For the one man will appear honorable and worthy of reverence, but the other truly worthless.
14:250
For to bring forth such things by way of reproach — I mean the lowliness of one's birth — is the mark of a truly petty soul.
14:251
But the other will be great and admirable, inasmuch as he counts such a thing as nothing, but is so disposed as though he had heard that he possessed something surpassing the rest.
14:252
But will he call the other an adulterer, and cast up the rest? At this point—
14:253
for when the conscience is not stricken, neither would anger find any occasion.
14:254
And considering what wicked and foul words he brings out into the open, not even so ought we to be grieved.
14:255
因為每個人日後本要知曉的事,如今他已將之揭露出來了;
For that which each man was afterwards going to learn, this he has now uncovered;
14:256
he has thereby rendered himself untrustworthy to all, as one who knows not how to cover the evils of his neighbor, and has shamed himself rather than the other, and has choked up every harbor for himself, and has made the reckonings of the coming tribunal fearful to himself.
14:257
For all will turn away not so much from this man as from that one, who has stripped bare and disclosed what ought not to have been revealed.
14:258
But do you say nothing of what you know against him; rather, keep silence, if you wish to receive the splendid glory.
14:259
For not only will you undo what was said, nor merely conceal it, but you will also work another good thing:
14:260
you will no longer cause the vote to be cast against yourself.
14:261
Does such a one speak ill of you? Do you say:
14:262
If he had known all, he would not have said only so much.
14:263
Did you marvel and were you astonished at what was said? But you must imitate it.
14:264
我們向你們講述這一切出自外邦的話,正是為此緣故——並非因為聖經沒有無數這類的例證,乃是因為這些話更能使人知恥;
For it is on this account that we tell you all these sayings drawn from outside sources — not because the Scriptures do not have countless such examples, but because these are the more able to put men to shame;
14:265
since Scripture too knows how to speak so as to shame, as when it says:
14:266
Do not even the heathen do the same? And the prophet Jeremiah brought forward the sons of Rechab, who would not consent to transgress their father's command.
14:267
Miriam and Aaron spoke ill of Moses, and at once He demanded their punishment, and did not even allow it that some should merely learn that Moses had obtained vindication.
14:268
but this above all we wish all men to learn, that they did not pass by unpunished.
14:269
How long shall we breathe from the earth? A battle cannot be sustained from one side alone.
14:270
你若從兩邊拉扯發狂的人,反倒更激怒他們;
If you drag away madmen by both sides, you will provoke them the more;
14:271
but if from the right or from the left, you have quenched the anger.
14:272
打人的若遇著不肯退讓的對手,就越發被激起;
The one who strikes, if he has an opponent who does not yield, is the more roused;
14:273
but if one who gives way, he is the more slackened, and the blow recoils upon himself.
14:274
For a man skilled in the pancratium does not so unnerve the strength of his antagonist as does a man who, being insulted, does not return the insult.
14:275
For that man, put to shame, thereupon departs condemned — first by his own conscience, and secondly by all the onlookers.
14:276
And there is a certain proverb, that indeed 'He who honors, honors himself.'
14:277
So then also the one who insults, insults himself.
14:278
我再說一次,除非我們自己害自己,否則沒有人能傷害我們;
No one will be able to wrong us — I say again — unless we ourselves do so;
14:279
nor will anyone make me poor, unless I make myself so.
14:280
Come, then, let us consider it thus:
14:281
假設我的靈魂是貧乏的,而眾人都把財富傾倒在我身上;
Let my soul be poor, and let all pour out their wealth upon me;
14:282
what of it? So long as that soul is not changed, all is in vain.
14:283
假設我的靈魂是豐盛偉大的,而眾人都奪走我的財富;
Let my soul be great, and let all take away my wealth;
14:284
what of it? So long as you do not make that soul poor, there is no harm.
14:285
假設我的生活是不潔的,而眾人都說我相反的好話;
Let my life be impure, and let all say the opposite concerning me;
14:286
what of it? For though they say it, yet they do not also so reckon it in their minds.
14:287
反過來,假設我的生活是純潔的,而眾人都說相反的壞話;
Again, let my life be pure, and let all say the opposite;
14:288
那又如何呢?因為他們在自己的良心裡必要定自己的罪;
and what of it? For in their conscience they will condemn themselves;
14:289
for surely they do not speak from conviction.
14:290
For just as one ought not to admit praises, so neither ought one to admit accusations.
14:291
And why do I say these things? No one will ever be able to plot against us, nor to involve us in any accusation, if we so will.
14:292
讓人拉我上公堂吧,讓他隨意誣告吧,甚至奪去我的性命吧;
Let someone drag me into court, let him bring false charges, if he will, and even carry off my life;
14:293
and what of it, to suffer these things undeservedly for a little while? 'This very thing, then, is an evil,' he says.
14:294
Nay rather, this very thing is a good — to suffer not according to one's deserts.
14:295
But what? Ought it to have been according to your deserts? Let me say something again:
14:296
A certain philosopher from among those outside, when he heard that a certain man had died, and one of his disciples said to him—
14:297
他轉過身來說:「怎麼——難道你願意他是死得公道的嗎?」約翰不也是被不公義地處死了嗎?那麼,你更憐憫哪一個呢——是死得公道的那位,還是死得不公道的那位?你豈不是把這一個看為可悲,卻甚至欽佩那一個嗎?那麼,這人受了甚麼虧損呢?他從那死亡本身反倒得了極大的益處,不但毫無損害。因為若是死亡把不朽的變成了必死的,或許還算得上損害;
he, turning, said, 'But what — did you wish it to be justly?' And did not John too die unjustly? Whom, then, do you rather pity — him who died justly, or him who died not so? Do you not count this one wretched, but the other you even admire? What harm, then, has the man suffered, who from that very death gained great things, being not only in no way harmed? For if it had made him mortal who was immortal, perhaps there would have been harm;
14:298
but if he was mortal, and by nature was destined a little later to await death, and this man hastened it upon him with glory,
14:299
what harm is there? Let our soul be rightly ordered, and there will be no harm from without.
14:300
But you are not in glory? And what of that? For what holds true concerning wealth, this holds also concerning glory.
14:301
因為我若心胸寬廣,就一無所缺;
For if I am magnanimous, I shall have need of nothing;
14:302
but if I am vainglorious, the more I obtain, by so much the more shall I have need.
14:303
And then shall I be most illustrious, and shall enjoy greater glory, if I despise glory.
14:304
Knowing these things, then, let us also give thanks to Him who has bestowed on us such a life, even Christ our God, and let us pursue that life unto His glory; for to Him belongs the glory, together with the Father who is without beginning, and His Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages.
