Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision:
20:2
And the Lord said to him:
20:3
起來,往那叫直街的巷子去,在猶大的家裡尋找一個大數人,名叫掃羅;
Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one named Saul, of Tarsus;
20:4
and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand upon him, that he might recover his sight.
20:5
那麼,為何祂既不召喚也不差遣任何一位為首的使徒來教導保羅呢?因為他不當藉著人被領進來,乃當藉著基督自己;
Why then did He neither call nor send any of the chief apostles for the instruction of Paul? Because it was not fitting that he should be brought in through men, but through Christ Himself;
20:6
since even this man taught him nothing, but only baptized him.
20:7
At all events, as soon as he was baptized he drew to himself much grace of the Spirit, by reason of his zeal and his great eagerness.
20:8
That Ananias too was among the very notable ones is plain from the things whereby he is made manifest and speaks to Him, and from the things whereby again he himself answers, saying:
20:9
Lord, I have heard from many concerning this man, how much evil he has done to Thy saints in Jerusalem.
20:10
If then he spoke thus in reply to the Lord, how much more would he have done so had He sent an angel!
20:11
也正因如此,在此之前,腓利並未預先聽見將要發生的事,乃是只看見那天使;
For this reason too, before this, Philip does not hear beforehand what is to come, but only sees the angel;
20:12
and thus the Spirit commands him to go near and to join himself to the chariot.
20:13
But here meanwhile He cuts short his fear, and all but says this by His saying:
20:14
看哪,他正在禱告,他是瞎眼的,你還懼怕嗎?摩西也是這樣懼怕;
Behold, he is praying, he is blind, and dost thou fear? So Moses also is afraid;
20:15
so that these are the words of one who is afraid rather than of one who disbelieves.
20:16
And hear their words:
20:17
Lord, I have heard from many concerning this man.
20:18
What sayest thou? God speaks, and dost thou doubt? Even so: they did not yet know the power of Christ.
20:19
And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call upon Thy name.
20:20
Whence is this plain? It was likely that, being in fear, they made careful inquiry.
20:21
He says these things, then, not as though Christ did not know them, but as one at a loss, that, these things being so, how it could be possible for these to come to pass.
20:22
So also in another place the disciples say:
20:23
Who can be saved? But observe how much is ordered by providence, that he might believe in Him who was coming.
20:24
他在夢中看見,主預先向他指明,說:他正在禱告;
In a dream he saw, He signified to him beforehand: He is praying, He says;
20:25
祂為何不將所成就的美善之事告訴他呢?是要教導我們不可張揚自己的善行;
And why does He not tell him of the good deed that had been done? To teach us not to proclaim our own good deeds;
20:26
or rather, having also seen him afraid.
20:27
Not even so did He say, Thou shalt not be disbelieved, but what? Arise, and go.
20:28
For he knows in a vision a man laying hands upon him.
20:29
For this reason it was in a vision, since he was blind.
20:30
連這神蹟極大的超絕之處,也未曾使那門徒失了自持;
And not even the exceeding greatness of the miracle carried away the disciple;
20:31
nevertheless, through him God made Paul, who was blind, to recover his sight.
20:32
And the Lord said to him:
20:33
Go thy way; for this man is a chosen vessel unto Me, to bear My name before nations and kings, and the children of Israel.
20:34
For I will show him how great things he must suffer for My name's sake.
20:35
He shall not only be faithful, He says, but also a teacher, and shall use much boldness of speech.
20:36
Before nations and kings.
20:37
So far, He says, shall the teaching prevail, as even to overcome nations and kings, one and all.
20:38
And Ananias departed and entered into the house, and laying his hands upon him he said:
20:39
Brother Saul, the Lord has sent me (Jesus, who appeared to thee in the way as thou camest), that thou mightest recover thy sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
20:40
At once he makes him his own by the name.
20:41
Jesus, he says, who appeared to thee in the way.
20:42
然而基督並未將這事告訴他;
And yet Christ had not told him this;
20:43
but he learned it from the Spirit.
20:44
And immediately there fell from his eyes as it were scales, and he received his sight forthwith, and arose and was baptized.
20:45
And having taken food, he was strengthened.
20:46
He only laid his hands upon him, and immediately there fell from his eyes the scales.
20:47
Some say that these were the cause of his blindness.
20:48
祂為何不使他的眼睛瞎了呢?那樣反倒更為希奇;
And why did He not blind his eyes? This would have been more marvellous;
20:49
因為連他睜著眼睛也看不見;
for even with his eyes open he did not see;
20:50
which is what he experienced under the law, until the name of Jesus was laid upon him.
20:51
And immediately, he says, he was baptized.
20:52
And having taken food, he was strengthened.
20:53
So then he was also enfeebled by his journey, and by his fear, and by hunger and despondency.
20:54
Wishing therefore to heighten his despondency, He suffered him to remain blind until Ananias came.
20:55
And that no one might think the blindness to be a mere appearance, for this reason there were the scales.
20:56
So then he needed no other teaching, but the thing that befell him became his teaching.
20:57
And he was with the disciples who were at Damascus certain days.
20:58
And immediately he preached Christ in the synagogues, that this is the Son of God.
20:59
Observe, immediately he was a teacher in the synagogues.
20:60
He was not ashamed of the change, he did not fear to overthrow the very things in which he had before been distinguished.
20:61
He was not simply a teacher, but a teacher even in the synagogues.
20:62
So then from the very outset the man was one bent on slaying, and prepared for murders.
20:63
Dost thou see what a clear sign came to pass concerning him? By this very thing he also astounded all men.
20:64
Wherefore, making this plain also, he adds, saying:
20:65
And all who heard him were amazed, and said:
20:66
Is not this he who in Jerusalem laid waste those who called upon this name, and has come here for this very purpose, that he might lead them bound before the chief priests? But Saul was strengthened all the more, and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this is the Christ.
20:67
For being learned in the Law, he stopped their mouths and would not let them so much as utter a word.
20:68
They thought they had rid themselves of disputations of this kind when they were rid of Stephen; and behold, in place of Stephen they found another more vehement still.
20:69
But let us look from the beginning at what concerns Ananias.
20:70
He did not say to him, 'Reason with him and instruct him.'
20:71
For if, when the Lord had said that 'he is praying,' and that he had seen a man laying his hands upon him, this did not persuade him,
20:72
how much more, had He said this.
20:73
so that he would not even distrust you.
20:74
'Therefore do not be afraid, but go.'
20:75
Thus neither did Philip at that time hear the whole matter all at once.
20:76
'For this man is a chosen vessel unto me.'
20:77
這乃是那位滿有豐盛、消除懼怕、勸人放膽者的話;
This is the utterance of One who out of His abundance dissolves fear, and persuades him to take courage;
20:78
if indeed he was so to be minded on His behalf as even to suffer many things.
20:79
既說了「器皿」,是要表明他的惡並非出於本性;又加上「揀選的」,好顯明他也是經過試驗、蒙悅納的;
And having said 'vessel,' in order to show that his wickedness was not natural to him, He added 'of choice,' that He might make clear that he is also approved;
20:80
for it is that which is approved that we choose.
20:81
沒有人聽見這些話,就當以為亞拿尼亞是因不信所說的話才這樣說,或因認為基督受了欺哄;
Let no one, hearing these things, imagine that Ananias says this out of disbelief in what is spoken, or from thinking that Christ had been deceived;
20:82
乃是他一聽見保羅的名字,就懼怕戰兢,甚至連所吩咐的話都沒有留意;
but rather, fearing and trembling, he did not even attend to what was said, once he had heard the name of Paul;
20:83
懼怕就這樣因他的名字而先佔據了他的心;
so did fear, arising from his very name, seize the soul beforehand;
20:84
and yet, having heard that He had blinded him, he ought to have taken courage.
20:85
'And here too,' he says, 'he has come for this very purpose, to bind all who call upon Your name.'
20:86
'I am afraid lest at some time he lead me up to Jerusalem.'
20:87
'Why do you cast me into the lion's mouth? Why do you betray me to this man?' He is afraid, and says these things, that we may learn from every side the virtue of the man.
20:88
因為這些話若出於猶太人之口,並不足為奇;
For that such things should be said by the Jews is nothing to wonder at;
20:89
but that they came from this man, and one so afraid, this is shown to be the greatest proof of the power of God.
20:90
Here both the fear becomes great, and the obedience, coming after the fear, is greater still.
20:91
Then, since He had said 'a chosen vessel,' lest you should say that the whole is God's work, drawing you away from this notion, He adds what follows, saying:
20:92
'to bear My name before Gentiles and kings, and the sons of Israel.'
20:93
他聽見了亞拿尼亞極其渴望的事,就是這人也要挺身抵擋猶太人;
He heard that which Ananias greatly desired, namely, that he would also stand firm against the Jews;
20:94
wherefore he is filled not only with joy, but also with courage.
20:95
'For I,' He says, 'will show him how great things he must.'
20:96
'suffer for My name's sake.'
20:97
These things are spoken both by way of forewarning and at the same time of reproof: if that man, who was so raging mad, is to suffer all things, while he himself is unwilling even to baptize him that he may recover his sight.
20:98
「他如今溫和,正因他是瞎眼的;
'For this reason he is now gentle, because he is blind;
20:99
你為何吩咐我開他的眼?好叫他再去捆綁人麼?」但你不要懼怕將來的事;
why do you bid me open his eyes? that he may bind again? But do not fear the future;
20:100
因為他要用復明的眼睛,不是敵擋我們,乃是為著我們;
for he will use his restored sight not against us, but on our behalf;
20:101
to the words 'that he may recover his sight,' let these also be added:
20:102
he will do you no harm, but on the contrary will himself suffer many things.
20:103
And what is indeed marvelous is this, that he first suffers, and only then embarks upon the dangers.
20:104
'Brother Saul, the Jesus who appeared to you on the road has sent me.'
20:105
他沒有說「那使你受傷的」,卻說「那向你顯現的」;
He did not say, 'He who maimed you,' but, 'He who appeared to you;'
20:106
so well did he know how to be moderate, and nowhere does he utter anything boastful.
20:107
Just as Peter said concerning the lame man:
20:108
'Why do you fasten your eyes on us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him to walk?' so also this man said, 'The Jesus who appeared to you.'
20:109
While his hands were laid upon him he uttered these things, and a twofold blindness was being dissolved.
20:110
And in saying that 'having taken food he was strengthened,' he made clear that he had been utterly enfeebled, both from the dejection over his blindness, and from the fear, and from the fasting.
20:111
For he had not even endured to partake of food before, until, having been baptized, he straightway obtained the great gifts.
20:112
他並不說「那被釘十字架的耶穌,神的兒子,那行神蹟的」;
And he does not say, 'Jesus who was crucified, the Son of God, He who works signs;'
20:113
乃是說甚麼呢?「那向你顯現的」,是從那人所熟悉的事上說的;
but what? 'He who appeared to you,' from the things familiar to that man;
20:114
since Christ Himself also added nothing more, nor did He say:
20:115
「我就是那被釘十字架、又復活的」;
'I am He who was crucified, who rose again;'
20:116
He did not say, 'He who was persecuted,' lest He should seem to be exulting over him and mocking him.
20:117
'He who appeared to you,' he says, 'on the road.'
20:118
And yet He was not seen, but was seen through the deeds themselves.
20:119
And wishing to soften the burdensomeness of the word, he straightway added:
20:120
'that you may recover your sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit.'
20:121
'He has come not to reprove what has been done, but to give the gift,' he says.
20:122
在我看來,這人和哥尼流都是在這些話一說出來,就立時領受了那靈;
It seems to me that both this man and Cornelius partook of the Spirit at once, as soon as these words were spoken;
20:123
and yet he who gave it was not one of the Twelve.
20:124
Thus nothing in all that concerned him was human, nor came about through man, but it was God who was present, doing these things.
20:125
And at the same time He trains him also to be moderate, not leading him to the pre-eminent apostles, and shows that here there was nothing human.
20:126
然而他還沒有蒙賜那行神蹟的靈,好叫他的信心也如此得以顯明;
Yet he was not deemed worthy of the Spirit that works the signs, in order that even in this way his faith might be shown;
20:127
'And immediately,' it says, 'in the synagogues he preached the Christ, that this is the Son of God.'
20:128
他所宣講的,不是說主復活了,也不是說主活著;
It was not that He rose again that he preached, nor that He lives;
20:129
but what? With the utmost exactness he set forth the doctrine:
20:130
'That this is the Son of God.'
20:131
But they, hearing these things, thereafter come to unbelief, though they ought not only to have believed, but also to have been astounded.
20:132
And why is it that they do not simply say that he was a persecutor, but that he laid waste those who called upon this name? By this they set forth his exceeding madness.
20:133
他們也不提耶穌的名,是出於嫉恨,連那名字都不肯聽;
And they did not name Jesus, out of malice not enduring even to hear the name;
20:134
so brutalized were they.
20:135
And here too he has come to this very point.
20:136
We cannot say, he means, that he had first associated with the apostles.
20:137
See by how many witnesses it is confessed, even by those who were his enemies, that Paul was such a man.
20:138
But he was not merely unashamed before these men; he even gloried in them.
20:139
But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews.
20:140
That is, he stopped their mouths, he did not allow them to say anything.
20:141
Proving that this is the Christ.
20:142
For indeed he was straightway a teacher.
20:143
And when many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him.
20:144
The Jews again resort to their forcible reasoning.
20:145
因為他們不再去尋找誣告者、控告者和假見證了;
For they no longer seek out false accusers, and prosecutors, and false witnesses;
20:146
for they can no longer endure even these.
20:147
But what then? Henceforth they carry out the deed by themselves, with their own hands.
20:148
For when they saw the matter growing more intense, they do not even convene a tribunal.
20:149
但他們的陰謀被掃羅知道了;
But their plot became known to Saul;
20:150
and they watched the gates both day and night, that they might kill him.
20:151
Why? Because more unbearable to them than all that had already happened were the signs, the five thousand, and the rest.
20:152
且看他此時如何得救—不是靠恩典,乃是靠人的智慧;
And observe how for the present he is saved, not by grace, but by human wisdom;
20:153
that you may learn the virtue of the man, shining forth even without signs.
20:154
But the disciples took him by night, and let him down through the wall, lowering him in a basket.
20:155
That the affair might be free from suspicion.
20:156
What then? Having escaped so great a danger, does he stand still? By no means; but he departs to where he would inflame them still more.
20:157
For that he had truly and thoroughly believed was as yet incredible to the many.
20:158
For this reason, this takes place after many days.
20:159
那麼這是甚麼意思呢?很可能他一時不願離開那裏,儘管或許有許多人勸他;
What then does this mean? It is likely that he did not wish for a while to depart from thence, though many perhaps urged him;
20:160
但當他得知此事後,就聽從了他的門徒;
but when he learned of it, then he yielded to his disciples;
20:161
for indeed he had disciples straightway.
20:162
Hinting at this, he said:
20:163
The governor under Aretas the king kept guard over the city of the Damascenes, wishing to seize me.
20:164
And observe the evangelist saying nothing in the way of boasting, nor setting Paul forth as illustrious, but only that they stirred up the king.
20:165
So they sent him away alone, and no one with him.
20:166
這也是有益的,好叫他能在耶路撒冷向使徒們顯現;
And this too was to his advantage, so that he might appear to the apostles at Jerusalem;
20:167
更確切地說,他們固然是打發他離去,以為他從此便可為自己謀得安全;
or rather, they indeed sent him away, thinking that thereby he would henceforth procure his own safety;
20:168
but he, doing the very opposite, straightway leapt in among those who were raging.
20:169
This is to be on fire; this above all is to be fervent.
20:170
And consider how he follows, from the very first day keeping the precept which the apostles heard, namely: If any man take not up his cross and follow me.
20:171
The fact, then, that he came later than the others made him all the more eager.
20:172
And in deed was fulfilled that saying: He to whom much is forgiven will love the more.
20:173
So that by however much he came last, by so much the more did he love.
20:174
For this reason also, branding his former life as with a pillar of infamy, and often marking himself with a stigma, he thought nothing sufficient to hide the things that had gone before.
20:175
Proving, it says; that is, teaching with gentleness.
20:176
且看,他們並不對他說:「你就是那逼迫人的;
And observe, they do not say to him, You are the persecutor;
20:177
why have you changed? For they were ashamed.
20:178
For he might have said, and with far greater justice, that This above all ought to teach you, since he thus makes his defence even before Agrippa.
20:179
Let us imitate this man, I beseech you, even we ourselves, and let us be arrayed in readiness against all dangers.
20:180
And how, one may say, does that man flee? The thing was not a matter of cowardice, but he was preserving himself for the preaching.
20:181
他若是膽怯,就不會上耶路撒冷去,也不會隨即擔起教導的職分;
If he had been cowardly, he would not have gone to Jerusalem, he would not straightway have taken up the teaching;
20:182
he would have abated somewhat of his vehemence.
20:183
But he was not cowardly; rather, he was prudent in stewardship.
20:184
He was instructed by the suffering of Stephen.
20:185
Wherefore he counted it no great thing to die for the sake of the preaching, unless he could do so with much profit—a man who did not even wish to see Christ, whom above all he was hastening to see, since the work of his stewardship toward men was not yet completed for him.
20:186
Such ought to be the soul of the Christian.
20:187
從那開端、從那起跑線本身,保羅的品格就已顯明出來了;
From the very preface and from the starting-line itself the character of Paul was displayed;
20:188
for in those things which he did not according to knowledge, he acted moved by human reasoning.
20:189
因為他若過了這麼長的時間仍不願離去;
For if after so long a time he was unwilling to depart;
20:190
much more at the beginning of his commerce, having just come forth from the harbours.
20:191
但基督並沒有把他從危險中奪出來,反倒任憑他;
But Christ does not snatch him away from the danger, but leaves him;
20:192
since he wishes many things to come about also through human understanding.
20:193
在另一方面,祂任憑他,好叫我們知道他們也是人,並且恩典並非在凡事上都成就一切;
And in another respect he leaves him, that we may learn that they too were men, and that grace did not everywhere work the whole;
20:194
since if this were not so, they would have been thought to be mere blocks of wood.
20:195
For this very reason they too ordered many things by means of practical measures.
20:196
Let us also do this, and thus let us reach out after the salvation of the brethren.
20:197
This is no less than martyrdom—to refuse to endure nothing for the salvation of the many.
20:198
Nothing so gladdens God.
20:199
我要再說我曾屢次說過的話;
Again I will say what I have often said;
20:200
我說這話,是因為我極其渴慕它;
and I say it because I greatly desire it;
20:201
since Christ also did the same, exhorting concerning forgiveness and saying:
20:202
When you pray, forgive if you have anything against anyone.
20:203
Again, discoursing with Peter, I say not to you, He says, that you forgive until seven times, but until seventy times seven;
20:204
and by his deeds he forgave the trespasses committed against himself.
20:205
Since we know that this is the definition of Christianity, we discourse about it continually.
20:206
Nothing is colder than a Christian who does not save others.
20:207
在這事上你不能以貧窮為藉口;
Here you cannot plead poverty;
20:208
for she who cast in the two mites will accuse you.
20:209
'Silver and gold have I none.'
20:210
And Paul too was so poor that he often went hungry and lacked the necessary food.
20:211
你不能以出身卑微為藉口;
You cannot plead low birth;
20:212
for those men also were obscure, and sprung from obscure origins.
20:213
你不能拿沒有學問來推託;
You cannot put forward your lack of education;
20:214
for those men also were unlettered.
20:215
縱使你是奴僕,縱使你是逃亡的奴隸,你仍能盡自己的本分;
Even if you are a slave, even if you are a runaway, you are able to fulfill your own part;
20:216
since Onesimus too was such a one.
20:217
But observe to what Paul calls him, and to how great a dignity he raises him.
20:218
'That he might minister to me,' he says, 'in my bonds.'
20:219
你不能以身體軟弱為藉口;
You cannot plead infirmity;
20:220
since Timothy too was such a one, being frequently subject to infirmities.
20:221
And that he was infirm, hear:
20:222
'Use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities.'
20:223
Each one is able to benefit his neighbor, if he is willing to fulfill his own part.
20:224
你們豈不見那些不結果子的樹,是何等強壯、何等美觀、高大、光滑而挺拔嗎?但我們若有一座園子,就必寧願要石榴和結果子的橄欖樹,遠勝過這些;
Do you not see the barren trees, how strong they are, how fair, tall, smooth and lofty? But if we had a garden, we should much rather wish to have pomegranates and fruit-bearing olives than these;
20:225
因為那些樹只供觀賞,並無用處;
for those trees are for delight, not for use;
20:226
and even their usefulness is but small.
20:227
那些只顧自己之事的人,正是如此;
Such are those who look only to their own concerns;
20:228
或者說,他們連這樣也算不上;
or rather, they are not even such;
20:229
因為這等人只配被焚燒;
for these are fit only for burning;
20:230
whereas those trees are useful both for building and for the security of those within.
20:231
那些童女也是如此,固然貞潔、端莊、自守,卻對人毫無益處;
Such also were the virgins, chaste indeed and modest and temperate, but useful to no one;
20:232
such are those who have not fed Christ.
20:233
你看這些人沒有一個是因自己的罪被控告的,不是因他行了淫亂,不是因他起了假誓,全然沒有;
For observe how none of these is charged on account of his own sins, not that he committed fornication, not that he swore falsely, nothing at all whatsoever;
20:234
but only that he was not useful to another.
20:235
Such was he who buried the talent, presenting indeed a blameless life, but being of no use to another.
20:236
How is such a one a Christian? Tell me, if leaven mingled with the meal does not transform the whole into its own nature, is such a thing really leaven? And what then, if perfume does not fill those near it with its fragrance, should we call this perfume? Do not say:
20:237
'It is impossible for me to lead others on;'
20:238
for if you are a Christian, it is impossible that it should not be so.
20:239
正如自然界中的事物是無可爭辯的,這些事也是如此;
For as the things in nature are indisputable, so also are these;
20:240
for the matter lies in the very nature of the Christian.
20:241
你若說太陽不能發光,就是侮辱它;
If you say that the sun cannot shine, you insult it;
20:242
if you say that the Christian cannot be of benefit, you insult God and call Him a liar.
20:243
因為太陽不發熱、不發光,還比基督徒不發光更容易;
For it is easier for the sun not to give warmth nor to shine, than for the Christian not to give light;
20:244
it is easier for light to be darkness, than for this to come to pass.
20:245
所以不要說這是不可能的;
Do not then say that it is impossible;
20:246
for the contrary is what is impossible.
20:247
If we order our own affairs well, those things will assuredly follow, and will ensue as a matter of nature.
20:248
基督徒的光是不可能被隱藏的;
It is not possible for the light of a Christian to be hidden;
20:249
it is not possible for so conspicuous a lamp to be concealed.
20:250
因為正如從德行而來的益處,既臨到我們,又臨到那些得益處的人;
For just as from virtue the gain passes over both to us and to those who are benefited;
20:251
so also from vice the loss is double, passing over both to us and to those who are harmed.
20:252
假若你願意,設想有一個平凡的人,從別人手中受了無數的惡待,卻沒有人為他報復,反倒以善報之;
Let there be, if you will, some ordinary man who has suffered countless evils from another, and let no one avenge him, but rather let him even do good in return;
20:253
of how much teaching is this not stronger? than how many words, how many exhortations? What wrath is it not able to quench and to soften? Knowing these things, then, let us hold fast to virtue, as it is not possible to be saved otherwise than by passing through this present life with these good deeds, that we may also attain the good things to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
