Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, devout and one that feared God with all his house, giving much alms to the people, and praying to God continually, who saw plainly in a vision, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him.
22:2
And he, gazing upon him, and becoming afraid, said:
22:3
'What is it, Lord?' And he said to him:
22:4
'Thy prayers and thine alms are gone up for a memorial before God.'
22:5
This man was not a Jew, nor living according to the Law, but had already anticipated our way of life.
22:6
And observe two men believing as yet—both the eunuch from Gaza, and this man—both being in high positions, and much diligence being shown on their behalf.
22:7
But do not suppose that it was on account of their dignities.
22:8
並非因著這些——斷乎不是;
It was not for these things—God forbid;
22:9
nay, for this very reason are their dignities set forth, that their devotion might be shown the greater.
22:10
For it is the more wonderful when a man, being in wealth and power, is nevertheless such a one.
22:11
但那另一個人也有極大的可稱讚之處,就是他起身走那樣長的路程,並且雖然不是合宜讀書的時候,卻在路上誦讀,又坐在車上,懇求腓利,還有無數其他的事;
But it was a great praise of that other man, to set out on so long a journey, and, though it was no fit season for it, to be reading on the road, and, while borne along in his chariot, to entreat Philip, and ten thousand other things;
22:12
and great also is this man's praise, to do alms and prayers, and to be devout while in such an office.
22:13
因此,神也是從這一點使這人得以顯明;
Wherefore also from this He makes the man known;
22:14
fitly, lest any should say that the narrative of the Scriptures is a falsehood.
22:15
'Of the band,' he says, 'called the Italian.'
22:16
A 'band' is what we now call a numerus (a regiment).
22:17
'Devout, and one that feared God with all his house.'
22:18
He says these things, that you may not suppose that the things concerning him are ordered thus on account of his rank.
22:19
所以,當保羅要被引領前來時,並沒有天使顯現,乃是主自己顯明出來;
So then, when Paul was to be brought forward, nowhere does an angel appear, but the Lord Himself is made manifest;
22:20
nor does He send him to any one of the Twelve, but to Ananias.
22:21
但在此處卻恰恰相反,他引領那為首的,正如他引領腓利到那太監那裏一樣,俯就他們的軟弱,並教導人當如何對待這樣的人;
But here, on the contrary, He leads the chief one, as He led Philip to the eunuch, condescending to their weakness, and teaching how one ought to deal with such persons;
22:22
since Christ Himself also is often seen going away to those who are in evil case, and who are unable to come to Him by themselves.
22:23
But observe here again for me another encomium of almsgiving, just as there through Tabitha.
22:24
A man, it says, devout and fearing God with all his house.
22:25
Let us hear, as many of us as neglect our own household.
22:26
This man also took care of the soldiers, and gave alms to all the people.
22:27
Thus both his doctrines and his manner of life had been set right in him.
22:28
He saw plainly in a vision, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, and saying to him:
22:29
他為何看見那使者呢?這也是為要使彼得得著充分的確信;
Why does he see the angel? This too was for the full assurance of Peter;
22:30
or rather, not of him, but of the others who were weaker.
22:31
And at the ninth hour, when he was released from cares, and was in quiet, when he was in prayers and in compunction.
22:32
And when he looked intently upon him and became afraid, he said:
22:33
Observe the angel not immediately telling what he tells, but first dispelling the fear, and lifting up his mind.
22:34
因為單從那景象就生出懼怕來;
For indeed from the sight there came fear;
22:35
but a measured fear, only so much as to make him turn.
22:36
隨後那話語就消除了那懼怕;
Then the words dispelled the fear;
22:37
or rather, the praise conveyed through them smoothed away the harshness of the fear.
22:38
And hear too what the words are:
22:39
Your prayers and your alms are come up for a memorial before God.
22:40
Now therefore send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, who is surnamed Peter.
22:41
That they might not come upon another, He indicates the man not only from his surname, but also from the place.
22:42
And he himself is lodging with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea.
22:43
Do you see how the apostles pursued the retired parts of the cities, being lovers of solitude and quiet? What then, if it chanced that there was also another Simon, and a tanner? But he had also another mark, that of dwelling by the sea.
22:44
The three could not coincide.
22:45
他也沒有說明緣由,免得使他的熱切鬆懈下來;
And He did not say why, lest He should relax his zeal;
22:46
but He left it, so that he might come to be in desire and longing for the hearing.
22:47
And when the angel who spoke to Cornelius had departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of those who waited on him continually, and having declared to them all things, he sent them to Joppa.
22:48
It is not merely to say this, but that even those who waited continually upon him were such men, in order to show it. And having declared to them all things, it says.
22:49
乃是為要也能說服他們,他才把一切的事都述說了;
but that he might also persuade them, he related all things;
22:50
因為他不肯憑著自己的地位來差遣他們;
For he did not think fit to summon them by virtue of his rank;
22:51
on this account, accordingly, he relates the matter.
22:52
這人是何等的謙和適度;
So exceedingly modest was the man;
22:53
and yet it was no great thing to have high notions concerning a man who was lodging with a tanner.
22:54
And on the morrow, as they were on their journey and drew near to the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour.
22:55
Observe how the Spirit brings the seasons together, and makes this happen neither too quickly nor too slowly.
22:56
經上說,約在正午,彼得上房頂去禱告;
Peter, it says, went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour;
22:57
that is, privately, and in quiet, as though in an upper room.
22:58
And he became very hungry, and wished to taste food.
22:59
But while they were making ready, there fell upon him a trance, and he beholds the heaven opened.
22:60
何為魂遊象外呢?經上說,有一屬靈的異象臨到了他;
What is a trance? A spiritual vision, it says, came to be for him;
22:61
his soul, as one might say, went out of the body.
22:62
And he beholds heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it were a great sheet, bound at the four corners and let down upon the earth; in which were all the four-footed beasts of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the birds of the heaven.
22:63
And there came a voice to him:
22:64
Rise, Peter; kill and eat.
22:65
By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything common or unclean.
22:66
And a voice came again a second time to him:
22:67
What God has cleansed, do not you make common.
22:68
這樣一連三次;
And this took place three times;
22:69
and again the vessel was taken up into heaven.
22:70
What ever can this be? The thing becomes a symbol of the whole inhabited world.
22:71
The man was uncircumcised, and had nothing in common with the Jews.
22:72
既然眾人都要控告他為違犯律法的人,而這一點又叫他們大大不服,於是神便如此安排,叫他說:我從來沒有吃過;
Since therefore all were going to accuse him as a transgressor, and this stood very much in their way, it is providentially ordered that he should say, I have never eaten;
22:73
並非他自己懼怕,斷乎不是,乃是如我所說,受了聖靈的引導安排,好叫他對那些控告他的人有個分訴,就是他曾加以違拒;
not that he himself was afraid, God forbid, but being providentially guided by the Spirit, as I said, that he might have a defence against those who accused him, namely that he had even gainsaid it;
22:74
for they cared very greatly about the keeping of the Law.
22:75
所以,如我先前所說,為要使這些人也不能控告他,這些事便如此安排了;
In order therefore that these also might not accuse him, as I said before, these things are providentially ordered;
22:76
or also, that it might not seem to be some phantasm, he said, By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything common or unclean.
22:77
And there came a voice to him:
22:78
What God has cleansed, do not you make common.
22:79
這話看似是對他說的;
This seems indeed to be said to him;
22:80
but the whole is said with reference to the Jews.
22:81
For if the teacher is rebuked, much more these.
22:82
那麼,那細麻布就是地;
The linen cloth, then, this is the earth;
22:83
其中的野獸,就是那從外邦來的人;
and the wild beasts in it are those from among the nations;
22:84
那『宰了吃罷』,就是說連他們也當去接近;
and the Kill and eat, that they too must be approached;
22:85
and this taking place three times signifies baptism.
22:86
By no means, Lord, I have never eaten anything common or unclean.
22:87
有人問,他為何加以違拒呢?乃是為要使人不至於說神在試驗他,正如在亞伯拉罕的事上一樣,那時他被吩咐把兒子獻為祭;
And why, one asks, did he gainsay it? That no one might say that God was tempting him, as in the case of Abraham, when he was commanded to offer up his son as a sacrifice;
22:88
As in the case of Philip, when he was asked by Christ, 'How many loaves have you?'
22:89
not that He might learn, but to prove him.
22:90
And indeed in the Law Moses made distinction concerning clean and unclean, both of the things upon the earth and of the things in the sea.
22:91
Now while Peter was perplexed within himself as to what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius, having inquired for the house of Simon, stood before the gate; and calling out, they asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, was lodging there.
22:92
While Peter was amazed within himself and at a loss, the men come opportunely, resolving his perplexity.
22:93
For in the same way He allowed Joseph also first to be troubled, and then sends the archangel.
22:94
For the soul readily receives the solution when it has first been brought into perplexity.
22:95
So then his perplexity neither continues for long, nor comes before this, but at about the hour of the midday meal.
22:96
And while Peter was pondering upon the vision, the Spirit said to him:
22:97
But arise, get down, and go with them, doubting nothing, for I have sent them.
22:98
And again this served as Peter's defence to the disciples, that they might learn both that he had doubted, and
22:99
was instructed to doubt nothing.
22:100
'Because,' He says, 'I have sent them.'
22:101
See how great is the authority of the Spirit.
22:102
And that which God does, this the Spirit is said to do.
22:103
那麼,那天使並不這樣行;
The angel, then, does not act thus;
22:104
乃是先說:「你的禱告和你的賙濟」,然後才說:「你要差人去」,為要表明他是從那裡奉差來的;
but having first said, 'Your prayers and your alms,' then he says, 'Send,' that he might show that he had been sent from thence;
22:105
but the Spirit, since He is Lord, says, 'I have sent them.'
22:106
And Peter, having gone down to the men, said:
22:107
Behold, I am he whom you seek.
22:108
What is the cause for which you are come? And they said:
22:109
Cornelius the centurion, a righteous man and one who fears God, and well attested by the whole nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to send for you into his house, and to hear words from you.
22:110
They speak the words of praise, so as to persuade him that an angel also had appeared to him.
22:111
So he called them in and lodged them.
22:112
Do you see whence the beginning of the calling of the Gentiles comes? From a devout man, shown to be worthy by his works.
22:113
For if, even though this took place, they were nonetheless offended, had this not been so, what would the Jews not have said? 'So he called them in,' he says, 'and lodged them.'
22:114
So that they might suffer nothing dreadful, he calls them in, and thereafter lives together with them with all boldness.
22:115
And on the next day Peter arose and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him; and on the following day they entered into Caesarea.
22:116
The man was of distinction, being in a distinguished city.
22:117
因此,在他這件事上,凡事都一同安排妥當,這事也是從猶太起頭的;
Wherefore also in his case everything is ordered together, and the matter takes its beginning from Judea;
22:118
例如那異象不是在他睡著時,乃是在他醒著時向他顯現,並且是在白晝;
such as that it appeared to him not while sleeping but while awake, and that it was in the daytime;
22:119
But let us look at what has been said from the beginning.
22:120
Your prayers and your alms have gone up for a memorial before God.
22:121
從這裡可見,那天使是藉著聲音呼喚,這樣哥尼流才看見他;
From this it is plain that the angel called by a voice, and thus he saw him;
22:122
因為那天使若不呼喚,他連看也看不見;
for had he not called, he would not even have seen him;
22:123
so intent was he upon the matter in which he was engaged.
22:124
And send for Simon who is surnamed Peter.
22:125
暫且,那天使已表明他召彼得來是為著美好的事;
For the present, that he was summoning him for good things, he made clear;
22:126
but what sort of good things, not yet.
22:127
彼得也照樣不把全部都說出來;
Thus neither does Peter tell the whole;
22:128
but everywhere the narratives are given in part, so as to rouse the hearers.
22:129
Thus also He calls Philip alone into the desert.
22:130
And Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour, and a trance fell upon him, and he beholds a certain vessel like a sheet.
22:131
Observe that not even hunger compelled him to run to the linen sheet.
22:132
But that Peter might not be in greater perplexity, he hears a voice saying:
22:133
Rise, Peter, kill and eat.
22:134
或許他是屈膝跪著時看見這異象的;
Perhaps he beheld the vision while lying upon his knees;
22:135
but it seems to me that he saw it on account of the preaching.
22:136
And that what took place was also divine, is plain both from his seeing it descend from above, and from his being in a trance.
22:137
And that a voice too was borne from thence, and that this happened three times, and that heaven was opened, and that it came from thence, and that it was caught up again to that place—these are a great proof that the matter was divine.
22:138
但這事為甚麼發生呢?是為著後來的人,就是他將要向他們述說這事的人;
But why does this take place? For the sake of those who came afterwards, to whom he was about to relate it;
22:139
since he himself had already heard the words, 'Go not into the way of the Gentiles.'
22:140
For if Paul had need of circumcision and of sacrifice, much more at that time, in the beginning of the preaching, when they were weaker, was there need of these things.
22:141
他說,看哪,哥尼流所差來的人,站在門前;
And behold the men, he says, who had been sent from Cornelius, stood before the gate;
22:142
and calling out they asked whether Simon who is surnamed Peter was lodging there.
22:143
Inasmuch as it was a humble house, they inquired from below, and did not ask the neighbours.
22:144
And while Peter was pondering, the Spirit said to him:
22:145
Arise, get down, and go, doubting nothing, for I have sent them.
22:146
因為這異象向你顯現,正是為著這緣故;
For it was on this account that the vision appeared to you;
22:147
but rather, 'I have sent them;'
22:148
showing that one ought so to obey, without demanding an accounting.
22:149
For it suffices for full assurance to hear from Him:
22:150
Do this, speak this, and seek nothing further.
22:151
Behold, I am he whom you seek.
22:152
Why then did he not receive them at once, but inquires? He saw that those who had come were soldiers.
22:153
Wherefore he does not simply ask, but having first confessed that he himself was the man, then he inquires the
22:154
cause of their coming, that it might not be thought that he inquired on this account, as though wishing to hide himself.
22:155
他詢問,是為著若有緊急催促的事,他也可以立時與他們同去;
And he inquires, in order that, if there were urgent pressing, he might also go forth together with them;
22:156
But for what reason do they say, 'He sends for you into his house'? Because he had so commanded them.
22:157
And perhaps also, as if making a defence on his behalf, they all but say:
22:158
He sent not as one who despised, but because he had been commanded to do so.
22:159
But Cornelius, it says, was waiting for them, having called together his kinsmen and his near friends.
22:160
For it was not right that he should fail to bring in with him both his kinsfolk and his friends.
22:161
And besides, being present there they would the rather have heard him.
22:162
你們已經看見,施捨的能力何等浩大,無論在前一篇講論裏,或是在此處。那一次救人脫離今世短暫的死亡,這一次卻救人脫離永遠的死亡;
You have seen how great is the power of almsgiving, both in the former discourse and here. That one delivered from a temporal death, this from the eternal death;
22:163
this also opened the gates of heaven.
22:164
See, then, how great a matter it was made that Cornelius should believe, so that even an angel was sent, and the Spirit wrought, and the chief of the apostles was summoned, and such a vision appeared, and absolutely nothing was left undone.
22:165
How many centurions were there, and captains of thousands, and kings, and none of these obtained what this man obtained? Hearken, all you who are in the armies, all you who stand before kings.
22:166
經上說,他是虔誠人,是敬畏神的;
He was devout, it says, and one that feared God;
22:167
and what is greater, that he was such a man together with all his house.
22:168
So well-disciplined was he to this end, and so disposed, that not only did he order his own affairs aright, but did this very same thing also in the matter of his household.
22:169
For he was not like us, who do everything to make our servants fear us, but nothing at all to make them reverent toward God.
22:170
But this man was not so; rather, together with his whole household he feared God, being not only as it were the common father of all who were with him, but of the soldiers also who were under him.
22:171
你且聽他們還說了另一件話;
But hear also what other thing they say;
22:172
for it is added of necessity: Being well reported of by the whole nation.
22:173
For what, if he was uncircumcised? Even those men, it says, bear witness to him.
22:174
所以沒有一樣能與施捨相比;
Therefore nothing is equal to almsgiving;
22:175
更確切地說,這事的力量之所以如此浩大,乃是當它從潔淨的府庫中流溢而出的時候;至於那從不義之財傾倒而出的,就好像一道湧出污泥的泉源;
or rather, so great is the strength of the thing, when it is poured forth out of pure treasuries; whereas the things poured out from unjust gains are like a spring that sends up mire;
22:176
but the things from righteous gains are like a stream clear and pure in a paradise, sweet to behold, sweet to touch, light and cool, given in the noonday heat.
22:177
在這泉源旁邊,不是白楊、松樹,也不是柏樹,乃是遠比這些美好許多、又高又直的樹木;
By this spring stand not poplars and pines, nor cypresses, but other plants far better than these, tall and lofty;
22:178
the friendship of God, the praise of men, glory that goes up to God, goodwill from all, the blotting out of sins, great boldness of speech, contempt of riches, almsgiving, whereby the plant of love is nourished.
22:179
For nothing is wont so to nourish love as for a man to be merciful.
22:180
這使那些枝子高高向上生長;
This makes the branches to rise on high;
22:181
這泉源比樂園中的那道更美,它不分為四個源頭,反倒直達諸天;
this spring is better than that in paradise, being divided not into four heads, but reaching to heaven itself;
22:182
這泉源生出那湧流直到永生的江河;
this gives birth to that river which springs up unto eternal life;
22:183
死亡落入這泉源之中,就像火星被泉水吞滅一般;
into this, when death falls, it is consumed like a spark by the spring;
22:184
thus, wherever it may drop, it works great blessings.
22:185
這泉源熄滅火的江河,如同熄滅一點火星;
This quenches the river of fire like a spark;
22:186
this so chokes the worm, as nothing else can.
22:187
He that has this gnashes not his teeth.
22:188
這水若滴在捆鎖上,就使它們裂開;
If of this water it drop upon the bonds, it parts them asunder;
22:189
and if it fall into the furnaces, it quenches them all.
22:190
正如樂園中的泉源,並非時而流出水流,時而枯乾(否則它就不再是泉源了),乃是永遠不斷湧出;
As, then, the spring in paradise does not now pour forth its streams and now dry up (since otherwise it would no longer be a spring), but ever gushes forth;
22:191
so also let ours. Ever let the stream flow more abundantly toward those who most stand in need of mercy, that it may remain a spring.
22:192
這使那領受的人歡喜;
This makes glad him that receives;
22:193
this is almsgiving, that the stream should not only flow forth strongly, but also continually.
22:194
If you would have the mercy of God rain upon you as from springs, do you also keep a spring.
22:195
If you open the mouths of this spring, such will be the mouths of the spring of God, as to overcome every abyss.
22:196
God seeks only to receive an occasion from us, and
22:197
he pours forth his good things out of his treasuries.
22:198
When it spends, when it expends, then it is rich, then it abounds.
22:199
那泉源的口何等寬大;
Great is the mouth of that spring;
22:200
pure is its stream, and clear.
22:201
If you stop not up this one, neither will he stop up that one.
22:202
Let no unfruitful tree stand beside it, lest it consume away its moisture.
22:203
你有錢財麼?不要在那裏栽種白楊;
Have you riches? Plant not poplars there;
22:204
it consumes much, and shows nothing in itself, but loses the fruit.
22:205
不要栽種松樹、杉樹,也不要栽種別樣這類的樹,它們耗費甚多,卻毫無用處;
Plant not a pine, nor a fir, nor any other of such trees, which consume much but are nowhere useful;
22:206
for such is the luxury of garments: fair only to look upon, but nowhere useful.
22:207
Plant all the fruitful trees in the hands of the poor, whatsoever you will.
22:208
沒有一樣土壤比這土壤更肥沃;
Nothing is richer than this soil;
22:209
and though the span of the hand is small, yet nevertheless the tree that is planted there reaches to heaven itself, and stands firm.
22:210
For that which is planted in the earth, if not now, yet after a hundred years will perish.
22:211
Why do you plant trees which you shall not enjoy, but ere you enjoy them, death coming upon you snatches you away beforehand? This tree, when you die, then it gives you its fruit.
22:212
你若栽種,不要栽在貪食的肚腹裏,免得果子落入茅廁之中;
If you plant, plant not in the belly of gluttony, lest the fruit pass out into the draught;
22:213
but plant in the afflicted stomach, that the fruit may leap up toward heaven.
22:214
Give rest to the straitened soul of the poor man, that you straiten not your own soul that is at large.
22:215
Do you not see that trees watered immoderately rot from the root,
22:216
但那按適當份量澆灌的,卻得以生長麼?照樣,你也不要過度澆灌自己的肚腹,免得那樹的根腐爛;
but those watered with due measure grow? Even so do you also not water your own belly immoderately, lest the root of the tree rot;
22:217
water the thirsty soul, that it may bring forth fruit.
22:218
凡按適當份量澆灌的,日頭必不使它腐爛;但那過度澆灌的,日頭卻使它腐爛;
The things watered with due measure the sun rots not, but those watered immoderately it rots;
22:219
for such is the nature of the sun.
22:220
無論在何處,過度總是禍害;
Everywhere excess is an evil;
22:221
wherefore let us cut it away, that we also may obtain the things we ask for.
22:222
In the highest places the springs are said to be brought forth.
22:223
所以我們的魂也當變為崇高,施捨便要速速流出;
Let us then also become lofty in soul, and quickly will almsgiving flow;
22:224
for it is not possible that the lofty soul should not also be merciful, nor the merciful soul not also lofty.
22:225
He, at any rate, who despises riches is above the root of evils.
22:226
泉源大多是在荒僻無人之處;
The springs are for the most part in desert places;
22:227
let us also lead our soul out of the throng of the crowd, and almsgiving will spring up in us.
22:228
泉源越是被淘清,就越發湧流不絕;
The more springs are cleansed, the more abundantly they flow;
22:229
even so with us also: the more we spend, the more do good things spring up.
22:230
凡有泉源的人,就無所懼怕;
He who has a spring is not afraid;
22:231
if then we too have almsgiving for our spring, we shall have no fear.
22:232
For indeed, for drink, for watering, for building, for all things this spring is useful to us.
22:233
沒有甚麼比這飲料更美的;
Nothing is better than this draught;
22:234
它不會使人醉;
it knows not how to work drunkenness;
22:235
it is better to have such a spring than for fountains of gold to flow.
22:236
Better than any gold-bearing land is the soul that bears this gold.
22:237
For it accompanies us not into these earthly palaces, but into those above.
22:238
金子成了神教會的裝飾;
Gold becomes an ornament to the Church of God;
22:239
from this gold is fashioned the sword of the Spirit, the sword by which the dragon is cut off.
22:240
From this spring proceed the precious stones that are about the King's head.
22:241
Let us not then be careless of so great wealth, but let us contribute almsgiving with liberality, that we may be counted worthy of the loving-kindness that comes from God, by the grace and mercies of His Only-begotten Son, to whom be all glory, honor, and might, together with the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages.
