24:1
Nec vero se per imperitiam pontifex excusabit, quasi propterea docere non valeat, quod ei sufficiens et luculentus sermo non suppetat: quando nulla alia sacerdotis doctrina debet esse quam vita, saLisque audilores possiut proficere, si a doctoribus suis quod vident spiritualiter fieri, boc sibi etiam simpliciter audiant prædicari, dicente Apostolo: Etsi imperitus sermone, sed non scientia (11 Cor. xi, 6). Unde datur intelligi quod non se debeat Ecclesiae doctor de ac curati sermonis ostentatione jactare, ne videatur ° Ecclesiam Dei non velle ædificare, sed magis se quantae sii eruditionis ostendere. Non igitur in ver-, borum splendore, sed in operum virtute totam praedicandi fiduciam ponat;
主教實在不可因缺乏經驗而推諉,彷彿他不能教導,理由是他沒有充足而華麗的言辭可供使用:因為祭司不該有別的教訓,惟有他的生活;只要聽者聽見人簡單地向他們宣講那他們所見其教師按屬靈所行的事,他們就能得著足夠的益處,正如使徒所說:我的言語雖然粗俗,我的知識卻不粗俗(林後十一6)。由此可知,教會的教師不該以雕琢之言的炫耀自誇,免得他顯出他所願的不是建造神的教會,乃是要顯示自己學問何等淵博。所以他當把宣講的全部信靠,不放在言辭的華美上,乃放在行為的德能上;
Nor indeed shall a bishop excuse himself on account of inexperience, as though he were unable to teach for the reason that a sufficient and eloquent discourse does not avail him: since no other doctrine of the priest ought there to be than his life, and hearers can profit well enough if they hear preached to them simply that which they see done spiritually by their teachers, as the Apostle says: Though unskilled in speech, yet not in knowledge (II Cor. 11:6). Whence it is given to understand that the teacher of the Church ought not to boast in a display of carefully wrought speech, lest he seem to wish not to build up the Church of God, but rather to show how great is his erudition. Let him therefore place his whole confidence in preaching not in the splendor of words, but in the power of works;
24:2
let him not be delighted by the voices of the people acclaiming him, but by their weeping; nor let him strive to await applause from the people, but groaning. Let the ecclesiastical teacher labor especially at this, that those who hear him may be made better by sound discourses, not favorers through vain flattery. Let him first himself pour forth the tears which he wishes to be poured forth by his hearers, and so kindle them by the compunction of his own heart. The discourse of a bishop ought to be so simple and plain—even if less Latinate, yet disciplined and grave—that by its very intelligibility it may exclude none, however unskilled, but may sink down into the heart of all who hear with a certain delight.
