59:1
Such men are made chaste either by the temperateness of their bodies, or the fear of temporal punishment suspends them from the act of unchastity, or a denied opportunity leaves them destitute. But although he is unchaste in will who is chaste by necessity; yet if both he who is of a temperate body gives thanks, for the benefit of his nature, to God the author of all natures; and he whom fear holds in the good of chastity, and he to whom opportunity denies the means of committing adultery, grow accustomed to live chastely: they for the most part advance into virtue out of necessity; and, as the very delight of chastity gradually grows, they truly become chaste:
59:2
et ita proficiunt, ut jam nOR sermone, sed virtute sordes impudicitiæ detestantes, non timore pœnæ carnalibus incentivis obsistant, qued eat incipientium proprium; sed exsecratione peccati refrenent inquietos carnis affectus, quod est castitatis consummatae fastigium. Non quod animus unquam desinat in hac carne cum vitiis he. bere conflictum; sed quod eum alat ac provehat, et quantum fieri potest in præsenti vita, perficiat ipsa numerositas triumphorum: si modo non se in corpus sensibilium captus delectatione dejiciat; sed exsecratione delectationum sublimiter roboratus, supra corpus se corporalium victor attollat;
並且他們如此長進,以致如今他們不是憑言語,乃是憑德行厭惡不潔的污穢,他們抵擋肉體的引誘,不是憑對刑罰的懼怕——這是初信者所特有的——乃是憑對罪的憎惡約束肉體不安的情慾,這乃是成全之貞潔的巔峰。並非說靈魂在這肉體中曾止息與惡習的爭戰;乃是說那眾多的得勝本身滋養並推進靈魂,並在今生盡可能地使它得以完全:只要它不被可感之物的喜樂所擄,把自己墜入身體;乃是因憎惡那些享樂而崇高地得著力量,作為得勝者把自己舉起,高過屬肉體之物的身體;
and so they advance, that now, detesting the filth of unchastity not by speech but by virtue, they withstand carnal incitements not by the fear of punishment — which is proper to beginners — but by abhorrence of sin they curb the restless affections of the flesh, which is the summit of perfected chastity. Not that the soul ever ceases in this flesh to have conflict with the vices; but that the very multitude of triumphs nourishes and advances it, and, as far as can be done in the present life, perfects it: provided only that, captive, it does not cast itself down into the body by the delight of sensible things; but, sublimely strengthened by abhorrence of delights, raises itself, a victor, above the body of bodily things;
59:3
ac Deo suo, sub quo g eum viventem desideria repudiata non vincunt, in aeternum glorificandus adhæreat.
and that he may cleave forever, to be glorified, to his God, under whom, while he lives, the desires he has rejected do not overcome him.
