3:1
1. Jam vero de qualitate ipsius vitæ futuræ quid dicam, quae potius debet credi quam dici? Nec ideo tamen debeo inde tacere o quod valeo, quia dicere quantum volo non valeo. Neque enim quia Deum ineffabilem credimus, fnri de illo quod possumus non debemus. Ita sane, ut plus credatur de illa vita, quam p scribatur; quia nec potest inde tantum proferri sermone, quantum potest mente complecii; et minus concipit mentis humanae quamlibet profunda complexio, quam q se habet rei ipsius magnitudo. Ergo futura vita creditur beate sempiterna, et sempiterne beata, ubi est certa securitas, r secura tranquillitas, tranquilla jucunditas, felix æternitas, æterna felicitas;
一、如今,我究竟當論將來那生命的性質說甚麼呢?那生命寧可被相信,而非被言說。然而,我不該因此就對我所能說的緘默不言,因我不能說得如我所願那麼多。我們既不該因相信神是難以言喻的,就不論及我們所能論的祂。誠然如此,以致對那生命所信的,當多過所寫下的;因為言語所能道出的,不及心思所能領會的那麼多;而人心最深的領會,無論何等深邃,所構想的,仍少於那事本身所含的浩大。所以,將來的生命被信為有福而永遠、永遠而有福,在那裡有確定的穩妥、穩妥的安寧、安寧的歡愉、有福的永恆、永恆的福樂;
1. Now indeed, what shall I say of the quality of that future life itself, which ought rather to be believed than spoken? Yet I ought not on that account to be silent about what I am able, because I am not able to say as much as I wish. For neither, because we believe God to be ineffable, ought we not to speak of him what we can. So indeed, that more may be believed of that life than is written; because neither can so much be uttered of it in speech as can be embraced in mind; and the human mind's profoundest embrace, however deep, conceives less than the magnitude of the thing itself contains. Therefore the future life is believed to be blessedly everlasting and everlastingly blessed, where there is sure security, secure tranquillity, tranquil delight, happy eternity, eternal happiness;
3:2
where there is perfect love, no fear, an eternal day, a brisk motion, and one spirit of all from the contemplation of their God, and secure of their own abiding with him; where that very city, which is the blessed congregation of holy angels and of men, gleams with shining merits, and eternal salvation abounds, truth reigns; where no one deceives, nor is deceived; from which no blessed one is cast out, and into which no wretched one is admitted.
