41:1
De talibus dicere videtur Apostolus: Qui in sacro no operantur, quos de sacrario sunt edunt, et qui altario deserviunt, i cum altario participant (I Cor. IX, 13).
Of such men the Apostle seems to speak: «They who work in the sanctuary eat the things that are of the sanctuary, and they who serve the altar partake of the altar» (1 Cor. 9:13). And unless he wished this to be understood of the despisers of their own resources, he would never have added, following on: «So also the Lord ordained that they who preach the Gospel should live by the Gospel» (ibid., 14). They live by the Gospel who wish to have nothing of their own, who neither have nor covet to have anything; possessors not of their own goods, but of common ones. What else is it to live by the Gospel, than for the laborer to receive the necessities of life there where he labors?
41:2
Apostolus tamen, qui sic Evangelium praedicavit, ut nec de Evangelio viveret, sed necessaria sibi suis manibus minislrarct, de se confidenter i eloquitur: Ego autem nullo horum usus sum. Et quare hoc dixerit, secutus aperuit dicens: Expedit mihi magis mori quam ut gloriam meam quis evacuet (lbid., 15). k Evacuari dicit gloriam suam, si ab eis quibus praedicabat voluisset accipere vitæ 1 corporalis expensam; nolebat quippe in præsenti laboris sui fructum, sed in futuro recipere. Si ergo ille qui nihil habebat, noluit de Evangelio ubi laborabat, sed suis manibus vivere, m ne gloriam suae rnercedis amitteret;
然而那如此傳福音、卻不靠福音養生、反倒親手供應自己必需之物的使徒,論到自己滿有把握地說:「但這些權柄我全沒有用過。」他為何這樣說,便接著說出來:「我寧可死,也不叫人使我所誇的落了空」(同上15)。他說他所誇的若落了空,是指他若願意從所傳之人領受供他肉身生活的費用而言;因為他不願在現今領受自己勞苦的果子,乃要在將來領受。那麼,那一無所有的人尚且不願在他勞力之處靠福音養生,反要親手作工,免得失去他賞賜的榮耀;
Yet the Apostle, who so preached the Gospel that he did not live by the Gospel, but ministered to himself the necessaries by his own hands, speaks of himself confidently: «But I have used none of these things.» And why he said this, he opened up by going on to say: «It is better for me to die, than that anyone should make void my glory» (ibid., 15). He says his glory would be made void if he had been willing to receive from those to whom he preached the expense of his bodily life; for he was unwilling to receive the fruit of his labor in the present, but in the future. If, then, he who had nothing was unwilling to live by the Gospel where he labored, but by his own hands, lest he should lose the glory of his reward;
41:3
what of us, who are unwilling to relinquish even our own out of love of possessing—not out of necessity of living—and wish moreover to receive, not whereby we may live, but whereby we may increase our wealth with damnable accumulations?
