Δύναται, φησί, γενέσθαι δίκαιος συγκρίσει ἀνθρώπων· ὡς δὲ πρὸς τὸν τῶν ὅλων κύριον πῶς ἔσται δίκαιος βροτός; — Οὐ γὰρ τυραννεῖ κρίνων ὁ θεός, ἀλλὰ πείθει τὸν κρινόμενον καὶ ποιεῖ αὐτὸν θελῆσαι παραδέξασθαι τὴν ἀπόφασιν αὐτοῦ. μέλλομεν γοῦν οἱ κρινόμενοι βλέπειν τὸν κύριον μεθ' ἡμῶν συνδικαζόμενον ἐπὶ τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ λέγοντα·ὠ ἄνθρωπε, τίς ἡ ὠφέλεια ἐν τῷ αἵματί μου, ἐν τῷ καταβῆναί με εἰς διαφθοράν; φέρε τί τούτου ἢ τῶν λοιπῶν πεποίηκας ἄξιον
'A man can become righteous,' he says, 'by comparison with men; but as toward the Lord of all, how shall a mortal be righteous?' — For God in judging does not tyrannize, but persuades the one judged, and makes him willing to accept His verdict. We who are judged are indeed about to behold the Lord pleading together with us before the Father and saying: 'O man, what profit is there in My blood, in My going down to corruption? Come, what have you done worthy of this or of the rest?'
他說:「人與人相比,能成為義的;但對著那萬有之主,必死的人怎能為義呢?」——因為神在審判時並不施行專橫,乃是說服那被審判的,使他甘心接受祂的判決。我們這被審判的,實在將要看見主與我們一同在父面前申辯,說:「人哪,流我的血、我下到敗壞之地,於你有何益處呢?來,你行了什麼配得起這事、或配得起其餘之事的呢?」
