Ὁ κύριος ἀρχῆθεν ἀνθρώποις οὐ λαλεῖ· ἀλλ' ἐπὰν παρασκευάσηται ψυχὴ διὰ πλειόνων, καὶ ὠφεληθῇ διά τε ἀνθρώπων καὶ διὰ τῆς ἰδίας προσευχῆς καὶ ἐπιμελείας, καὶ ἐκγυμνάσηται, καὶ ἀναβῇ εἰς ὕφος καθ ὅσον δυνατὸν ἀνθρωπίνῃ φύσει, τότε ὁ κύριος λαλεῖ, καὶ τοὺς ἑαυτοῦ λόγους ἀποκαλύπτει τοῖς εἰς τοσοῦτον ἀναβεβηκόσιν. οὕτω τοιγαροῦν καὶ τῷ Ἰὼβ πεποίηκε· διετήρει γὰρ αὐτῷ τὸν λόγον ὡς στέφανον. Ζητήσωμεν δὲ καὶ τό Διὰ λαίλαπος καὶ νεφῶν. οὐ γὰρ φαίνεταί ποτέ τινι τῶν πρότερον διὰ λαίλαπος λελαληκὼς ὁ θεός. ἡ οὖν λαιλαψ χειμῶνός ἐστι ποιητική· τῷ δὲ Ἰὼβ μέγιστος χειμὼν ἐληλύθει, ὅλος ὁ διάβολος ἐνέσκηψεν αὐτῷ, τοῦτο αἰτήσας ἀπὸ θεοῦ. χειμὼν ἦν τῷ Ἰὼβ καὶ ὁ λόγος τῶν φίλων. ἐν τῷ τοιούτῳ χειμῶνι ὑπέστη κοὶ ἐκαρτέρησεν· ὡς δὲ νοήμων, κυβέρνησιν κτησάμενος, περὶ τὴν πίστιν οὐκ ἐναυάγησεν. διὰ τοῦτο ὁ χρηματίζων αὐτῷ πρὸς σύμβολον τοῦ καταλαβόντος αὐτὸν χειμῶνος, ἐνᾡ καὶ διέλαμψεν, διὰ λαίλαπος χρηματίζει, καὶ εἰ μὲν ἔμεινε τὰ τοῦ Ἰὼβ ἐν τῇ περιστάσει ταύτῃ, ὥστε αὐτὸν καταλειφθῆναι ταῦτα πάσχοντα καὶ ἐξελθεῖν τὸν βίον, ἐλάλησεν ἂν αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος διὰ λαίλαπος μόνον. νῦν δὲ ἐπειδὴ μεταβάλλει αὐτῷ τὰ πράγματα ἀπὸ χειμῶνος εἰς εὐδίαν, καὶ ἐπειδὴ ἀπείληφε τὴν ὑγείαν τοῦ σώματος, διὰ τοῦτο ὁ χρηματίζων αὐτῷ οὐ μόνον διὰ λαίλαπος, ἀλλὰ καὶ διὰ νεφῶν λαλεῖ
The Lord does not speak to men from the very outset; but when a soul has been prepared through many things, and has been benefited both through men and through its own prayer and diligence, and has been trained, and has ascended on high as far as is possible to human nature, then the Lord speaks, and reveals his own words to those who have ascended so far. Thus indeed he did also with Job; for he kept the word for him as a crown. Let us also inquire into the phrase 'through a whirlwind and clouds.' For God does not appear at any time to have spoken to any of the men of old through a whirlwind. Now the whirlwind is the maker of a storm; and upon Job a very great storm had come, when the whole devil descended upon him, having asked this of God. A storm to Job was also the speech of his friends. In such a storm he stood firm and endured; and like a man of understanding, having acquired a pilot's skill, he was not shipwrecked concerning the faith. For this reason he who gave the oracle to him, as a symbol of the storm that had overtaken him—in which he also shone forth—gives the oracle through a whirlwind. And if indeed Job's affairs had remained in this calamity, so that he was left suffering these things and departed from life, the Lord would have spoken to him through a whirlwind only. But now, since his circumstances are changed for him from storm to fair weather, and since he has recovered the health of his body, for this reason he who gives him the oracle speaks not only through a whirlwind, but also through clouds.
主起初並不對人說話；但當一個靈魂藉著許多事被預備好，並藉著別人、又藉著自己的禱告與殷勤而得了益處，受了操練，且照人性所能達到的盡力上升到高處時，主就說話，將他自己的話向那些上升到如此高度的人啟示出來。他對約伯正是這樣行的；因為他將那話如同冠冕一般為他存留。讓我們也來查考「藉旋風與雲彩」這話。因為神在古時似乎從未藉旋風向任何人說過話。旋風乃是製造風暴的；而最大的風暴臨到了約伯，那時整個魔鬼向他撲下來，這是牠向神所求的。他朋友的言語對約伯也是一場風暴。在這樣的風暴中他站立得穩、忍耐到底；他像個有見識的人，得了掌舵的本領，在信心上並未遭遇覆舟。為這緣故，那向他發出諭示者，就以旋風發出諭示，作為臨到他、又使他在其中發出光輝的那場風暴的記號。倘若約伯的境遇仍停留在這場災難中，以致他在受這些苦中被撇下而離世，主就只藉旋風向他說話了。但如今，既然他的境況從風暴轉為晴朗，又既然他的身體已恢復健康，為這緣故，那向他發諭示者，不單藉旋風，也藉雲彩向他說話。
