[Πάλιν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν τὸν λόγον μετήγαγεν. οὐχ ὡς πηγὴν τῆς θαλάσσης ἐχούσης, ἀλλ' ὡς μὴ ἐκλειπούσης, καθάπερ πηγὴν ἐχούσης.] εἰς ἄβυσσον πολλοὶ καταβεβήκασιν· καταβεβήκασι δέ, ὥστε δέσμιοι εἶναι, οὐχ ὥστε περιπατεῖν ἐν αὐτῇ. Ἰησοῦς μόνος ἐν ἀβύσσῳ περιεπάτησεν ὡς ἐλεύθερος. ὅπου ἴχνη περιπατούντων οὐκ ἔνι [εἵλετο γὰρ θάνατον, οὐχ ὑπεύθυνος ὤν, ἵνα τοὺς ὑποκειμένους θανάτῶ λυτρώσηται]. καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἐν δεσμοῖς· ἐξέλθατε [καὶ τοῖς ἐν σκότει· ἀνακαλύφθητε, ᾧ καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς συμφωνοῦσιν]
[Again he transferred the discourse to the sea—not as though the sea has a spring, but as not failing, just as one that has a spring.] Many have descended into the abyss; but they have descended so as to be prisoners, not so as to walk in it. Jesus alone walked in the abyss as a free man, where there are no footprints of those who walk [for he chose death, though not liable to it, that he might ransom those subject to death]. And he says to those in chains: 'Come forth' [and to those in darkness: 'Be uncovered'—with which the following words also agree].
〔他又把話題轉到海上——並非說海有源頭,乃是說海如同有源頭般永不枯竭。〕許多人已下到深淵;但他們下去乃是作了囚犯,並非為要在其中行走。惟有耶穌在深淵中如同自由人行走,在那沒有行人足跡之處〔因為他本不該死,卻揀選了死,為要救贖那些伏在死權下的人〕。他對被囚的說:「出來吧」〔又對在黑暗中的說:「顯露出來吧」——下文的話也與此相合〕。
