[Ταῦτα ὕλη καὶ τροφὴ πυρὸς τυγχάνει· αὐλίζεται δὲ μάλιστα παρὰ τοῖς ἄξίοις τοῦ πυρὸς, ὑπὸ τὰς ὑγρὰς καὶ ἀτόνους καὶ ἀκάρπους ψυχάς, αἳ πυρός εἰσιν ὑλαι... ἢ τοῦτο λέγει, ὅτι συνδιαιτῶνται αὐτῷ καὶ μεγάλοι τινὲς δαίμονες καὶ ὑποβεβηκότες τῇ κακίᾳ, ἢ ὅτι μικροὺς καὶ μεγάλους ἄνδρας ἐπέρχεται, πάντας ὁμοίως ὑποτρέχων. ῥάδαμνοι γὰρ αἱ παραφυάδες· λέγει οὖν ὡς ὑΠὸ σκιαῖς δένδρων. οὕτω παρὰ τούτοις ἐπαναπάυεται. καὶ κλῶνες ἀγνοῦ. ἐπειδὴ πολλοὶ πολλάκις καὶ ἁγνείαν ἀσκήσαντες τῆς αὐτοῦ μερίδος γεγόνασιν, ὡς αἱ μωραὶ παρθένοι· εἰσὶ γὰρ καὶ παρ' αὐτῷ ἁγνεύοντες.]
[These things are the fuel and food of the fire; and it lodges especially among those worthy of the fire, among the moist and slack and fruitless souls, which are the fuel of fire... Or he means this: that with him there dwell together both certain great demons and those of lower rank in wickedness; or that he comes upon men both small and great, running in alike upon all. For the 'tender shoots' are the side-growths; he speaks therefore as of shade beneath trees—thus among these he takes his rest. 'And the branches of the chaste-tree (agnos).' Since many, often even after practicing chastity, have become of his portion, like the foolish virgins; for there are some practicing chastity even with him.]
