94:1
The same Augustus to Demosthenes, Praetorian Prefect. We will that it be permitted to no one — whether a little child begotten of freeborn parents, or of freedman stock, or stained with servile condition, has been exposed — to claim such a child into his own dominion, whether under the title of ownership, or of the adscriptitious, or of the colonary condition. But neither to those who have taken them up to be nourished do we wholly grant licence to take them up with any such distinction. But, no distinction being made, those who have been brought up, or nourished, or reared by men of this kind shall appear free and freeborn, and shall acquire for themselves, and shall transmit to their posterity or to outside heirs all that they shall have possessed, in whatever manner they will.
Datum Cbalcedone, VIII Kalend. Jul., Lampadio et Oreste vv. cc. coss. 510.
These things being observed not only by the governors of the provinces, but also by the most religious men, the bishops. Given at Chalcedon, on the eighth day before the Kalends of July, in the consulship of the most distinguished Lampadius and Orestes, in the year 510.
