1:1
The vision which Esaias son of Amos saw, which he saw against Judea and against Jerusalem, in the reign of Ozias and Joatham and Achaz and Ezekias, who reigned over Judea.
1:2
Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord has spoken: I begot sons and exalted them, but they rejected me.
1:3
The ox knows the one who acquired it, and the donkey its master's manger; but Israel has not known me, and the people has not understood me.
1:4
Woe, sinful nation, a people full of sins, an evil seed, lawless sons! You have forsaken the Lord and provoked the Holy One of Israel to anger.
1:5
Why should you be struck again, adding lawlessness? Every head is in pain, and every heart in sorrow.
1:6
From the feet to the head there is neither wound, nor bruise, nor festering sore; there is no salve to apply, nor oil, nor bandages.
1:7
Your land is desolate, your cities burned with fire; as for your country, strangers devour it before you; and it has been made desolate, overthrown by foreign peoples.
1:8
The daughter of Sion shall be left as a tent in a vineyard, and as a watchman's hut in a cucumber field, as a besieged city.
1:9
And unless the Lord Sabaoth had left us a seed, we would have become as Sodom, and we would have been made like Gomorrha.
1:10
Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; give heed to the law of God, you people of Gomorrha.
1:11
What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord. I am full of whole burnt offerings of rams; and the fat of lambs, and the blood of bulls and of goats, I do not want.
1:12
Nor if you come to appear before me; for who required these things at your hands, to trample my court?
1:13
You shall not continue; if you bring fine flour, it is vain; incense is an abomination to me. Your new moons and sabbaths and great day: I cannot endure fasting and idleness.
1:14
And your new moons and your feasts my soul hates; you have become a surfeit to me; I will no longer let your sins go.
1:15
When you stretch out your hands to me, I will turn my eyes away from you; and though you multiply your supplication, I will not listen to you, for your hands are full of blood.
1:16
Wash yourselves, become clean; remove the evils from your souls before my eyes; cease from your evil deeds.
1:17
Learn to do good; seek judgment; rescue the one who is wronged; give judgment for the orphan, and do justice for the widow.
1:18
And come, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins be as crimson, I will make them white as snow; and though they be as scarlet, I will make them white as wool.
1:19
And if you are willing and listen to me, you shall eat the good things of the land.
1:20
But if you are unwilling and do not listen to me, a sword shall devour you; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things.
1:21
How has the faithful city Sion become a harlot! She was full of judgment, in which righteousness slept; but now, murderers.
1:22
Your silver is worthless; your tavern-keepers mix the wine with water.
1:23
Your rulers are disobedient, companions of thieves, loving gifts, pursuing repayment; they do not give judgment for orphans, nor attend to the case of widows.
1:24
Therefore thus says the Master, the Lord Sabaoth: Woe to the mighty ones of Israel! For my wrath shall not cease against my adversaries, and I will execute judgment from my enemies.
1:25
And I will bring my hand upon you, and will refine you unto purity; and the disobedient I will destroy, and I will remove all the lawless from you, and I will humble all the proud.
1:26
And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counsellors as at the beginning; and after that you shall be called a city of righteousness, the faithful mother-city Sion.
1:27
For with judgment shall her captivity be saved, and with mercy.
1:28
And the lawless and the sinners shall be crushed together, and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
1:29
For they shall be ashamed of their idols, which they themselves desired; and they were put to shame for their gardens, which they coveted.
1:30
For they shall be as a terebinth that has cast off its leaves, and as a garden that has no water.
1:31
And their strength shall be as a stalk of tow, and their works as sparks of fire; and the lawless and the sinners shall be burned up together, and there shall be none to quench them.
