120:1
Ante hos dies,id est, diem octavum kalendarum mensis hujus quo crescere dies coepit,quiadiesverus illuxit, in carne natum Dominum Christum Jesum,in Evangelio scriptum (Luc.II), facile recolunt, qui legerunt, vel qui aurem legentibus praebuerunt. Israelitici pastores super gregem suum vigilantes, angelis nutiantibus, cognoverunt: hodie in eadem carne manifestatum gentiles magi curiosa sectantes, signis indicantibus,invenerunt.lllis ortum Dominicæ nativitatis annuntians locuta est vox spirituali um ministrorum, istis stella tanquam lingua coelorum. Dicunt illi ad quos saepius prophetae missi fuerant: Transeamus usque Bethleem,et videamus hoc verbum quod factum est ad nos;
Before these days, that is, on the eighth day before the Kalends of this month, on which the day began to grow because the true Day shone forth, that the Lord Christ Jesus was born in the flesh, as it is written in the Gospel (Luke 2), those readily recall who have read it, or who have lent an ear to those reading. The Israelite shepherds, keeping watch over their flock, came to know it by the announcement of angels: today the Gentile Magi, following their inquiries, found Him made manifest in that same flesh by the indications of signs. To the shepherds the voice of the spiritual ministers spoke, announcing the rising of the Lord's nativity; to the Magi a star, as it were the tongue of the heavens. Those to whom the prophets had so often been sent say: 'Let us pass over as far as Bethlehem, and see this word which is come to pass to us';
在這些日子以前,就是在本月朔日前第八日,那日子開始加長之時,因為真正的白晝照耀出來,主基督耶穌照肉身降生了,正如福音所記(路二);凡讀過的、或曾側耳聽人誦讀的,都容易記起。以色列的牧人看守自己的羊群,藉天使的報告而得知:今日外邦的博士出於好奇的探究,藉眾兆的指引,尋見了那在同一肉身中顯現的主。向牧人宣告主誕生之升起的,是屬靈使者的聲音;向博士宣告的,卻是一顆星,彷彿諸天的舌頭。那些先知曾屢次奉差前往的人說:「我們往伯利恆去,看看所成的這事,就是主向我們所指明的」;
120:2
these others say, to whom none of the prophets had ever spoken, and asking they inquire: 'Where is He that is born King of the Jews? We have seen His star in the East, and are come to adore Him' (Matt. 2). So the former approach from nearby, the latter come from afar, yet both, in pious devotion, meet at one and the same place of faith: and there they behold, they marvel at, they acknowledge Christ the King set before those two prophetic beasts of burden, which bear the type and figure of the two peoples. 'For the ox knew his owner, and the ass his master's crib' (Isa. 1).
120:3
AgnovitenimbosJudaeus d jugo legis excusso,agcovit et asinus paganus stultitiae feritate deposita;ille deserens superfluum observationis laborem,hic relinquens vagum superstitionis errorem. Uterque agnovit, quia uterque ad unum præsepe Domini epulaturus accessit, epulaturusnon fenum mortis, sed cibum salutis.Edite, edite,pia animalia,æternæ vitae cibaria: et perpetuæ retributionis escam avidis quantum potestis faucibus occupate, non dividentes in frusta, sed integrum, solidumque sumentes.Non potestenim edi Christus, et dividi;integer a credentibus sumitur, integer in ore cordis recipitur. Verbumenim caro factum est, et habitavit in nobis (Joan. 1):
For the ox—the Jew—knew Him, when the yoke of the Law was shaken off; and the ass—the pagan—knew Him too, when the wildness of folly was laid aside: the one forsaking the superfluous toil of observance, the other leaving behind the wandering error of superstition. Each acknowledged Him, because each drew near to the one crib of the Lord to feast, to feast not on the hay of death but on the food of salvation. Eat, eat, O pious animals, the fare of eternal life: and seize with jaws as eager as you can the food of everlasting recompense, not dividing it into fragments, but taking it whole and entire. For Christ cannot be eaten and divided; He is taken whole by believers, He is received whole into the mouth of the heart. 'For the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us' (John 1):
120:4
habitavit, ex quo uterum Virginis dignanter implevit. Obtulerunt illi, ut scriptum est,aurum,thus et myrrham.Nos fidei e thus longinquee regionis,nos f proximae confessionis myrrham boniodoris,nos suaveolentia dona charitatis tria namque ista offerimus,quando Christum, et regem,etDominum, et hominem confitemur. Sed in spiritu et veritate adoremus Christum, si ei munera fidei et confessionis obtulimus;
He dwelt, from the time when He deigned to fill the womb of the Virgin. They offered Him, as it is written, gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Let us offer the frankincense of faith from a far country, let us offer the sweet-smelling myrrh of a near confession, let us offer the fragrant gifts of charity; for we offer these three when we confess Christ to be King, and Lord, and Man. But let us adore Christ in spirit and in truth, if we have offered Him the gifts of faith and of confession;
自從祂俯就充滿童貞女的胎,祂便住了下來。經上記著,他們把黃金、乳香、沒藥獻給祂。讓我們獻上從遠方而來的信德之乳香,讓我們獻上近處認信的馨香沒藥,讓我們獻上仁愛的芬芳禮物;因為當我們認基督為王、為主、為人時,我們就獻上這三樣。但讓我們以心靈和誠實敬拜基督,如果我們已將信德與認信的禮物獻給了祂;
120:5
and let us, like those Magi who are the leaders of our faith and the princes of our believing, being warned in dreams—that is, in this life, which is like a sleep—having eluded King Herod—that is, the devil, the prince of this world—return by another way—that is, by another life—to that our homeland, from which through Adam we were unhappily cast out, but to which through Christ we are now mercifully led back.
