36:1
Ubi vernalis aurae tempusannuosoviumcoeperit partus aperire, ubi per campos, prata, vias cœperit fecundi gregis germina copiosa dispergere, pastor bonus f seponit, et can tus,et g discursuanxio teneros quaerit, legit, colligit fetus, atque eos collo, humeris, ulnis,laetus vector imponit, ut salvosomnes perferat,eth tulas perducat ad caulas.Sic nos, fratres, Ubi Quadragesimæ arridente verno ecclesiasticum gregem videmus fundere uberes partus,i tractatus nostri cantus et j consueti sermonis epulas seponentes, totam curam in colligendo et comportando coelesti germine, anxii gravissimo labore dependimus.
When the season of the vernal breeze begins to open the yearly birth of the ewes, when through the fields, meadows, and paths the fruitful flock begins to scatter abroad its abundant offspring, the good shepherd lays aside both his singing and his anxious ranging, and seeks, gathers, and collects the tender young, and joyfully carrying them, sets them upon his neck, shoulders, and arms, that he may bring them all safe and lead them into the sheltering folds. So we, brethren, when in the smiling springtime of Lent we see the ecclesiastical flock bring forth its teeming births, laying aside the song of our discourse and the feast of our accustomed sermon, we anxiously expend all our care, with heaviest labor, in gathering and bringing home the heavenly seed.
36:2
Sed quiak agnosredditosgregi,ettotos intra Christi videmus essejam septa,divinos laetissimirevocamur ad cantus, Dominici vobiscibi exsultatione tota vitales copias apponentes: ut quos socios senserimus in labore,participes in gaudiis habere possimus. Pastor, inquit, bonus, animam suam ponit pro ovibus suis (Joan. x). Fortem facit vis amoris,quianildurum,nilamarum, nil grave, nillethale, computat amor verus. Quod ferrum? quæ vulnera?quæ pœna?quæ mortes, amorem praevalent separare perfectum ?
But since we see the lambs restored to the flock, and all now within the enclosures of Christ, we are most joyfully called back to divine songs, setting forth, with the full exultation of the Lord's food, its life-giving abundance for you: that those whom we have felt to be companions in labor, we may be able to have as partakers in joys. And because this our preface has made and brought in mention of the good shepherd—of him who alone is good, alone the shepherd, alone the shepherd of shepherds—let the whole intent of our sermon and discourse be filled and occupied with him. The good shepherd, he says, layeth down his life for his sheep (John 10). The force of love makes him strong, for true love reckons nothing hard, nothing bitter, nothing grievous, nothing deadly. What sword, what wounds, what punishment, what deaths can prevail to separate perfect love?
36:3
Amor impenetrabilis est lorica,respuit jacula,gladios excutit, periculis insultat, mortem ridet,si amor est, vincitomnia.Sed quaeramus utrum sit ovibus commoda mors ista pastoris, quæ destituit oves, quae lupis tradit inerme pecus,quae sic charum gregem ferinis morsibus derelinquit,direptioni dat, et exponit morti, sicut ipsius pastoris Christi probatur ex morte. Ex quo namque posuit ipse auimam suam pro ovibus suis, seque Judaicofurore permisit occidi,oves ejus gentilium,velut prædonum,diripiuntur incursu; mactandæ in carceribus, velut latronum clauduntur antris;
Love is an impenetrable breastplate; it spurns darts, shakes off swords, defies dangers, laughs at death—if it is love, it conquers all things. But let us inquire whether this death of the shepherd is advantageous to the sheep, which forsakes the sheep, which delivers the defenseless flock to wolves, which thus abandons the dear flock to the bites of wild beasts, gives it to plunder, and exposes it to death—as is proved from the very death of the shepherd Christ himself. For from the time when he laid down his life for his sheep, and allowed himself to be slain by Jewish fury, his sheep are plundered by the onset of the Gentiles, as of robbers; they are shut up in prisons to be slaughtered, as in the dens of brigands;
愛是不可穿透的護心鏡;它蔑視飛箭,抖落刀劍,藐視危險,嗤笑死亡——若是真愛,它就勝過萬事。但讓我們探究,牧人這死亡對羊群是否有益——這死亡撇下羊群,將無自衛之力的羊交給豺狼,如此把親愛的羊群丟給野獸的咬囓,交付掠奪,暴露於死亡——正如從牧人基督自己的死亡所證明的那樣。因為自從祂為羊捨命、任憑自己被猶太人的狂怒所殺,祂的羊便被外邦人如強盜般的攻擊所擄掠;牠們被關在監牢裏待宰,如同在盜匪的巢穴中;
36:4
they are ceaselessly torn by persecutors as by raging wolves, they are gnawed by heretics as by strange dogs with rabid tooth. This the slain choir of the apostles proves; this the blood of the martyrs, spread over the whole world, cries aloud; this the limbs of Christians—given to beasts, consumed by fires, sunk in rivers—plainly demonstrate: all of which, just as the shepherd's death brought on, so his life could have prevented. Therefore for thee, O shepherd, he proves his love by death, because when he sees peril threatening the sheep, when he cannot defend the flock, he would rather die than see any harm come to his sheep. But what shall we do, since Life could not die unless he had willed it? Who could have taken away the soul, against his will, from the Giver of the soul, since he himself says:
36:5
Potestatem habeo ponendi animam meam, et potestatem habeo iterum sumendi eam; nemo tollit eam a me. Ergo mori voluit, qui se, cum mori non posset, permisit occidi.Quæramus ergo hujus quae vis, quæ ratio sit amoris,quæ hujus causa mortis,quae hujussit utilitas passionis. Et plane vis certa, vera ratio, causa lucens, utilitas tanti sanguinis peraperta: namque pastoris una ex morte virtus emicuit singularis; pastor pro ovibus morti quæ ovibus imminebat, occurrit; ut auctorem mortis diabolum novo ordine captus caperet, victus vinceret, puniret occisus, et ovibus moriendo viam vincendae mortis aperiret. Nam et diabolus,dum in hominem tendit, prosilivit in Deum;
I have power to lay down my life, and I have power to take it up again; no man taketh it from me. Therefore he willed to die, who, though he could not die, allowed himself to be slain. Let us then inquire what is the force, what the reason of this love, what the cause of this death, what the profit of this passion. And plainly the force is sure, the reason true, the cause shining, the profit of so great a blood most manifest: for from the shepherd's single death one singular power shone forth; the shepherd met the death that threatened the sheep, in place of the sheep, that by a new order the captive might capture the devil, the author of death, the conquered might conquer, the slain might punish, and by dying might open for the sheep the way of conquering death. For the devil too, while he aims at man, leaped upon God;
「我有權柄捨命,也有權柄取回來;沒有人奪我的命去」。因此,祂雖不能死,卻任憑自己被殺,可見祂是情願受死的。那麼讓我們探究這愛的力量是甚麼、理由是甚麼,這死亡的緣由是甚麼,這受難的益處是甚麼。這力量確乎穩固,理由確乎真實,緣由光明燦爛,如此寶血的益處極其昭彰:因為從牧人這一次的死亡,射出了一種獨特的能力;牧人代替羊群,迎向那威脅羊群的死亡,好叫那被擄的,藉著新的次序反擄那死亡的創始者魔鬼;被勝的反得勝,被殺的施行懲罰,並藉著受死為羊群開闢勝過死亡的道路。因為魔鬼在攻擊人的時候,竟撲向了神;
36:6
dum in reum sævit, incurrit injudicem: invenit supplicium, dum ingeritpcenam;ipse accipit, dum dat sententiam; et vivens mortalium pastu morsmoritur,dumdevorat vitam: absorbens reos mors, absorbetur,innocentiae dum deglutit auctorem; et perit mors ipsa,quae perdebat omnes, dum omnium perimere vultsalutem. Ergo tali forma praecessit aves pastor,pastor ab ovibus non recessit; nec illas dedit lupis, sed tradidit lupos illis quibus donavit suos eligere sic praedones, ut occisæ viverent, laniatæ resurgerent, sanguine suo tinctae fulgerent regali purpura, niveo vellere perlucerent.Sic bonus pastor pro ovibus cum posuit animam,non amisit; et oves taliter tenuil,uon reliquit;
while it rages against the guilty, it runs upon the Judge; it finds punishment while it inflicts a penalty; it itself receives sentence while it pronounces sentence; and death, living upon the food of mortals, dies while it devours Life: death, swallowing the guilty, is itself swallowed while it gulps down the Author of innocence; and death itself perishes, which was destroying all, while it seeks to slay the salvation of all. Therefore in such fashion the shepherd went before the sheep; the shepherd did not withdraw from the sheep; nor did he give them to the wolves, but delivered the wolves to them—to whom he granted thus to choose their own plunderers, that being slain they might live, being torn they might rise again, dyed in their own blood they might shine in royal purple, and gleam in snow-white fleece. So the good shepherd, when he laid down his life for the sheep, did not lose it; and he so held the sheep, that he did not forsake them;
它在向有罪者發怒之時,卻撞上了那審判者;它在施加刑罰之時,反找到了自己的刑罰;它在宣告判決之時,反自己領受了判決;那賴凡人為食而活的死亡,在吞噬生命之時,反倒死了:那吞下有罪者的死亡,在吞嚥那清白的創始者之時,反被吞下;那毀滅萬人的死亡本身也滅亡了,因它想要殺害萬人的救恩。因此牧人以這樣的方式走在羊群前面;牧人並未離開羊群;也未把牠們交給豺狼,反倒把豺狼交給了牠們——祂容牠們如此揀選自己的擄掠者,好叫牠們被殺卻得存活,被撕裂卻復活,浸在自己的血中卻閃耀著王者的紫袍,並在雪白的羊毛中發光。這樣,好牧人為羊捨命,卻沒有失喪;祂如此持守羊群,卻沒有撇下牠們;
36:7
nec destituit oves tali ter, sed in vita vi!, quas per mortales campos, per iter mortis, vitalia vocavit et perduxit ad pascua. Sed dicit aliquis. Quando haec erunt? Ecce interim oves, id est apostoli, prophetæ, martyres et confessores jacent sepulti: discerpti toto sparguntur in orbe,invoiuti sanguine,tetris clauduntur sepulcris. Et quis dubitat quod resurgant,vivant, regnentoccisi martyres,quandoChristusa illisresurrexit, vivit et regnat occisus ? Audi vocem pastoris hujus: Oves meae vocem meam audiunt et sequniur me.Necesse est utquee sunt ad mortem secutæ, sequantur ad vitam;quæ ad contumeliam comitatae sunt,comitenturad honorem;
nor did he thus forsake the sheep, but in life he called them—whom through mortal fields, through the road of death, he called to life-giving pastures and led them thither. But someone says: When shall these things be? Behold, meanwhile the sheep—that is, the apostles, prophets, martyrs, and confessors—lie buried: torn asunder they are scattered over the whole world, wrapped in blood, shut up in foul tombs. And who doubts that the slain martyrs shall rise again, live, and reign, since Christ, being slain, rose again, lives, and reigns? Hear the voice of this shepherd: My sheep hear my voice, and follow me. It is necessary that those who followed unto death should follow unto life; that those who accompanied unto reproach should accompany unto honor;
祂也未如此撇下羊群,反倒在生命中呼召牠們——祂經過必死的田野、經過死亡的道路,呼召牠們往那賜生命的草場,並引領牠們到那裏。但有人說:這些事甚麼時候成就呢?看哪,此刻羊群——就是使徒、先知、殉道者與宣信者——躺臥被埋葬:被撕裂、被分散於全世界,裹在血中,關在污穢的墳墓裏。既然基督被殺卻復活、活著並掌權,誰又懷疑那被殺的殉道者必復活、活著並掌權呢?且聽這牧人的聲音:「我的羊聽我的聲音,也跟著我」。那些跟隨祂直到死亡的,必要跟隨祂直到生命;那些伴隨祂直到凌辱的,必要伴隨祂直到尊榮;
36:8
and that they should be partakers of glory, who were partakers of the passion. Where I am, he says, there also shall my minister be (John 12). Where? Assuredly above the heavens, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. O man, let not faith trouble thee, let not hope, though long deferred, weary thee: for the matter is sure to thee, which is kept for thee in the very Author of all things. You are dead, he says, and your life is hidden with Christ in God; when Christ, who is your life, shall appear, then you also shall appear with him in glory (Col. 3). The laboring reaper shall see in the harvest what he sees not in the seed, and he who weeps in the furrow shall rejoice in the fruit.
