8:1
God deals with us, He deals with us in this world, that nothing of ours may perish in the world to come: as shines forth from the very beginning of the reading. 'Take heed,' He says, 'that you do not do your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall have no reward with your Father who is in heaven' (Matt. 6:1). And how is it that what is done by men before men is not done? What is hidden of a manifest justice, what is secret of a public work? He who can conceal the rays of the sun will be able to hide the splendor of justice. Justice is the light of things; it is not veiled by dark designs. Justice, when it shines by its own deed, enlightens all by its example. And what is it that the Lord does not will to be done before men, through which human affairs receive their stability?
8:2
Et ubi est illud: Sic luceat lux vestra coram hominibus, ut videant opera vestra bona, et glorificent Patrem vestrum qui in cælis est (Matth. v, i6) ? Quomodo justitiam vult celare, cujus opera vult sic b elucere ? Fratres, hic praeceptio coelestis vult jactantiam tollere, auferre pompam, vanitatem demere, submovere inanem gloriam: sic justitiam vult celare. Justitia, quæ per se sibi abundat ad gloriam, spectaculum populi.vulgi laudes, favores hominum, mundi gloriam non requirit: a Deo genita, cœlum spectat; in oculis agit divinis; supernis virtutibus mixta semper a Deo solo, ut glorificetur, exspectat. Sed hæc est justitia, quæ ex Deo est;
And where is that saying: 'So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven' (Matt. 5:16)? How does He will to conceal justice, whose works He wills so to shine forth? Brethren, here the heavenly precept wills to take away boasting, to remove pomp, to strip off vanity, to put away vainglory: thus it wills to conceal justice. Justice, which of itself abounds unto glory, does not seek the spectacle of the crowd, the praises of the mob, the favors of men, the glory of the world: born of God, it looks to heaven; it acts in the divine eyes; mingled with the powers above, it ever awaits to be glorified by God alone. But this is the justice which is from God;
那又如何解釋這話:「你們的光也當這樣照在人前,叫他們看見你們的好行為,便將榮耀歸給你們在天上的父」(太五16)?祂既願自己的作為如此發光,怎會又願隱藏公義?弟兄們,此處這天上的訓誡是要除去誇口、除去炫耀、剝去虛榮、除掉虛浮的榮譽:這才是它願隱藏公義的緣故。那本身足以得榮的公義,並不尋求群眾的圍觀、烏合之眾的稱讚、眾人的青睞、世界的榮耀:它既由神所生,便仰望天上;它在神的眼前行事;它與上界的能力相交,常單單等候被神榮耀。然而這才是出於神的公義;
8:3
illa vero justitiaquæ est hypocrisis, justitia non est: mentitur oculis, fallit aspectum, videntibus illudit, decipit audientes, seducit turbas, trahit populos, famam vendit, emitclamorem, fit sæculo, Deo non fit, mercedem rapit præsentem, præmium non quærit in futuro, cæcatoculos, caeca ipsa non videns vult videri: propter quam caeci tatem Christus præsenti sic inchoat in praecepto. Attendite. Hoc est, ne gestiatisattendi. Ne justitiam vestram faciatis curam hominibus. Quare ?
but that justice which is hypocrisy is no justice: it lies to the eyes, deceives the sight, mocks the beholders, deceives the hearers, seduces the crowds, draws the peoples, sells reputation, buys applause, is done for the world, not for God, snatches the present reward, seeks no prize in the future, blind of eye, itself blind and seeing nothing, wills to be seen: on account of which blindness Christ thus begins in the present precept. 'Take heed.' That is, do not be eager to be observed. 'Do not do your justice before men.' Why? 'That you may not be seen by them.' And if you shall have been seen, what then? 'You shall have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.'
8:4
Fratres, hic Dominus non judicat, sed exponit, pandit cogitationum dolos, secreta mentium nudat, injuste justitiam tractantibus,modum j ustae retributionis indicit.Justitia,quae se humanis oculis locat,divinipatris non potest exspectare mercedem: voluit videri,etviea est; voluit hominibus placere, et placuit; habet mercedem quam voluit; praemium quod habere noluit, non habebit. Qua vero de causa sint haec praemissa,ex sequentibus audiamus. Cum facis eleemosynam, noIi tuba canere ante te, sicut hypocritæ faciunt. Bene tuba, quia talis eleemosyna hostilis est, non civilis, non misericordiæ dedita, sed clamori: seditionis vernula, non alumna pietatis;
Brethren, here the Lord does not condemn, but expounds; He lays open the deceits of thoughts, He bares the secrets of minds; to those who handle justice unjustly He appoints the measure of a just recompense. Justice, which sets itself before human eyes, cannot await the reward of the divine Father: it willed to be seen, and it is seen; it willed to please men, and it pleased; it has the reward it willed; the prize it willed not to have, it shall not have. But for what cause these things were premised, let us hear from what follows. 'When you do alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do.' Well does He say 'trumpet,' for such almsgiving is hostile, not civil, not devoted to mercy but to clamor: a slave-born thing of sedition, not a nursling of piety;
弟兄們,此處主並非定罪,乃是講解;祂揭露思念的詭詐,剖露心思的隱秘;對那些不義地運用公義的人,祂宣告了公義報應的分量。那把自己陳列在人眼前的公義,不能期待天父的賞賜:它願被看見,就被看見了;它願討人喜悅,就討了人喜悅;它得著了它所願的賞賜;它所不願得的獎賞,它必不得著。至於這些話為何先說在前,讓我們從下文聽取。「你施捨的時候,不可在你前面吹號,像那假冒為善的人所行的。」祂說「號」,說得好,因為這樣的施捨是敵意的,不是為公益的,不是獻於憐憫,乃是獻於喧嚷:是叛亂所生的家奴,不是虔敬所育的孩子;
8:5
j ostentationis nundinatio, non commercium charitatis, Eleemosynam quisquis ostendat, insultat. Tu,inquit, eum facis eleemosynam, noli tuba canere ante te, sicu t hypooritæ faciunt in Synagogis, et in vicis, ut glorificentur ab hominibus. Amen dico vobis receperunt mercedem suam.Audietis quemadmodum notateleemosynamin oonventu, in pIa. teis, in triviis, non impensam ad levamen pauperum, sed hominum propositam ad favorem, ut probentur misericordiam Tendere, non donare. Fugienda est hypocrisis, fugienda, fratres, quas captiva gloriæ, verecundiam pauperum a non relevat, b sed fatigat I ques de gemitu inopis pompam sum gloriationis inquirit, quæ suam laudem dilatat pauperis ex dolore;
a hawking of ostentation, not a commerce of charity. Whoever displays his almsgiving, insults. 'You, therefore,' He says, 'when you do alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.' You shall hear how He marks the almsgiving in the assembly, in the squares, at the crossroads, given not for the relief of the poor, but set forth for the favor of men, so that they are found to be selling mercy, not bestowing it. Hypocrisy is to be fled, to be fled, brethren, which, being a captive of glory, does not relieve the shame of the poor but wearies it, and seeks from the groan of the needy the pomp of its own boasting, which spreads its own praise out of the poor man's grief;
是炫耀的叫賣,不是愛心的交易。凡誇示自己施捨的人,乃是侮辱。祂說:「所以你施捨的時候,不可在你前面吹號,像那假冒為善的人在會堂裡和街道上所行的,故意要得人的榮耀。我實在告訴你們,他們已經得了他們的賞賜。」你將聽見祂如何指出那在聚會中、在廣場上、在街口所行的施捨,並非為救濟窮人而施,乃是為博取眾人青睞而擺出,以致顯明他們是在販賣憐憫,不是施予憐憫。弟兄們,虛偽是該逃避的,該逃避的——它作了榮耀的俘虜,不但不解除窮人的羞恥,反倒加重之,並從貧困者的歎息中尋求自誇的炫耀,從窮人的痛苦中張揚自己的稱讚;
8:6
quæ de miseria petentis famam suae ostentationis expandit.Sed dioitaliquis: Ergo in conventu, in pIateil, in triviis neganda est misericordia ? non praebendus est victus 1 Plane, et in omna loco, et in omni tempore facienda est misericordia præbendus est victus, nuditas est tegenda; sed sic quomodo docuit misericordiæ auctor, ut misericordia non terræ sit nota, sed cœlo; non hominibus insinuata, sed Deo. In plateis, intriviis suum pietas habet secretum: e eontra platea est, trivium est, cum in secreto facit hypocrita nil secretum. Fratres, Deus monendo sie rota culpat, non loca; sensum, non opera; studium, non datorem: arguit largientem ad suam famam, non ad pauperisfamem;
which spreads the fame of its own display out of the misery of the one who begs. But someone says: 'Then in the assembly, in the squares, at the crossroads is mercy to be denied? Is sustenance not to be offered?' Plainly, both in every place and at every time mercy is to be done, sustenance is to be offered, nakedness is to be clothed; but so as the Author of mercy taught, that the mercy may be known not to earth but to heaven; not made known to men, but to God. In the squares, at the crossroads, piety has its own secret: on the contrary, it is a public square, it is a crossroads, when in secret the hypocrite does nothing secret. Brethren, God by His admonition thus blames the wheel, not the places; the intent, not the works; the eagerness, not the giver: He arraigns the one who is bountiful for his own fame, not for the poor man's hunger;
它從乞討者的悲慘中張揚自己炫示的名聲。但有人說:「那麼,在聚會中、在廣場上、在街口,就當拒絕施憐憫嗎?就不當供給食物嗎?」顯然不是;無論在何處、何時,都當施憐憫,都當供給食物,都當給赤身者衣穿;只是要按憐憫之主所教導的那樣行,好叫這憐憫不為地所知,乃為天所知;不向人顯露,乃向神顯露。在廣場上、在街口,虔敬自有它的隱秘;反倒是,當假冒為善的人在隱秘處竟毫不隱秘地行事時,那才成了廣場、成了街口。弟兄們,神藉祂的訓誨所責備的,是那心念的轉輪,不是地點;是意圖,不是作為;是熱衷,不是施予者:祂控告那為自己名聲、而非為窮人飢餓而慷慨的人;
8:7
judicatnon ubi facias, quando facias,sed qualiter facias: quia Deus de cordibus, non de manibus facta metitur;c et de sensu, non de locis operum colligit qualitatem. Misericordiam coram se solum vult fieri, quisolusestmisericordiae et remunerator et testis; et qui dicit: Esurivi, et dedistis mihi manducare (Matth. xxv, 55). Vult in paupere sibi dari: et qui vult sibi dari, vult quod datum est se debere; ct qui vult se debere quod datum est, vult largientibus nil perire.Deusparvaposcit,maxima redditurus. Unde homo d si in paupereDeofeneras, testes homines non requiras: fides arbitros non requirit. De accipientis fide disputat, qui sine mediatoribus nil dat;
He judges not where you do it, when you do it, but how you do it: for God measures deeds from hearts, not from hands; and from the intent, not from the places of the works, He gathers their quality. He wills mercy to be done before Himself alone, who alone is both the rewarder and the witness of mercy; and who says: 'I was hungry, and you gave Me to eat' (Matt. 25:35). He wills it to be given to Himself in the poor: and He who wills it given to Himself, wills that what is given be owed to Him; and He who wills that what is given be owed, wills that nothing perish for the bountiful. God asks small things, being about to repay the greatest. Wherefore, O man, if in the poor you lend to God, do not require men as witnesses: faith requires no arbiters. He argues about the faith of the receiver, who gives nothing without mediators;
祂所判斷的,不是你在何處行、何時行,乃是你怎樣行:因為神是從心衡量作為,不是從手;祂是從意圖、而非從作為的地點,斷定其品質。祂願憐憫單單行在祂面前,因惟有祂是憐憫的賞賜者,也是憐憫的見證者;祂又說:「我餓了,你們給我吃」(太二十五35)。祂願人在窮人身上把憐憫施予祂自己:那願人施予祂自己的,就是願所施予的算作欠祂的債;那願所施予的算作欠債的,就是願慷慨者一無失喪。神所求的甚小,所要償還的卻極大。所以人哪,你若在窮人身上借給神,就不必要求人作見證:信心不需要仲裁者。凡不用中間人便一無所給的人,才會計較領受者的信實;
8:8
Nesciat sinistra tua quid faciat dextera tua. Sicut e sunt nobis in dextera parte virtutes, ita nobis t pars vitiorum in sinistra.
who defames what has been entrusted, burns his debtor with shame. Therefore, O man, about to give to God, give in secret; that what you shall have given may not be of burden, but of honor. For this cause your Enricher comes to you in the poor, that you may not doubt to render back what you have received, since it is He who by His grace gave you to have what you might give. But how modest is the poverty in the poor man, who seeks the secrecy of your bounty, he himself makes plain, when he says: 'But when you do alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does.' Do you think how much he wills another not to know, who wills you yourself who do it not to know in some part of yourself? 'Let not your left hand know what your right hand does.' As we have the virtues in the right-hand part, so the part of vices is on our left.
Therefore, as it is the work of the right hand what the silent giver does, so what the garrulous giver does is the hypocrisy of the left. Hypocrisy, deceit, dissimulation, fraud, lying, arrogance, swelling, boasting press upon us, and threaten from the left. As often, therefore, as we have a cause of goodness, of piety, of mercy, let the left hand not know it. The left is that which ever declares against us the battles of souls, and labors that the virtues may not come into effect. That there may be no piety, impiety works; that almsgiving may not conquer, cupidity fights; avarice rages, that mercy may not grow strong; that innocence, purity, simplicity, holiness may not reign, hypocrisy alone gives battle, which Christ shuts out from us by such a proclamation:
8:10
Teautemfaciente eleemosynam, nesciat sinistra tua quid faciat dextera tua. Amen.
'But when you do alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does.' Brethren, in this world let us flee the things that are on the left, if in the world to come we desire to stand on the right, and to hear: 'Come, blessed of My Father, receive the kingdom, which was prepared for you from the foundation of the world' (Matt. 25:34). O man, give on earth to the poor, what you will to have remain for you in heaven. O man, be a fellow-soldier here to the poor, if you will to reign there with the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen.
