Sed non erga Athanasium fictae philosophiae tenere imaginem potuit. Etenim cum, velut tetri serpentes de cavernis terrae ebullientes, ad eum processisset magorum, philosophorum, aruspicum, augurumque manus prophana, omnes pariter allegant, nihil suis artibus successurum, nisi prius Athanasium, velut omnium horum obstaculum, sustulisset.
But he could not maintain the image of feigned philosophy toward Athanasius. For when, like foul serpents bubbling up from the caverns of the earth, a profane band of magicians, philosophers, soothsayers, and augurs had come forth to him, they all alike alleged that nothing would succeed by their arts unless he had first removed Athanasius, as the obstacle of all these things.
