42:1
Post hunc Valentinianus imperium suscepit, qui pro fide nostra a Juliano militia fuerat expulsus. Sed complevit in illo Dominus quod promisit, plus etiam quam centupla in praesenti seculo restituens ei. Nam quia militiam pro Christo reliquerat, recepit imperium. Is in consortium regni assumsit fratrem Valentem, et sibi quidem Occiduas partes delegit, illi autem Orientales reliquit. Sed Valens favendo haereticis, abiit in viam patrum suorum. Nam et Episcopos egit in exilium, et Presbyteros, ac Diaconos, et Monachos (Tatiano Alexandriae praesidente) usque ad tormenta deduxit, et ignibus tradidit. Multaque nefanda et crudelia in Ecclesiam Dei molitus est. Sed haec omnia post Athanasii obitum.
After him Valentinian took up the empire, who had been expelled from military service by Julian for the sake of our faith. But the Lord fulfilled in him what He had promised, restoring to him in the present age even more than a hundredfold. For because he had left military service for Christ's sake, he received the empire. He took his brother Valens into partnership of the kingdom, and chose for himself the Western parts, but left the Eastern to his brother. But Valens, by favoring heretics, went off in the way of his fathers. For he drove bishops into exile, and brought presbyters and deacons and monks (Tatian presiding at Alexandria) even to tortures, and handed them over to the flames. And he contrived many wicked and cruel things against the Church of God. But all these things were after the death of Athanasius.

Nam illo superstite, velut divina quadam virtute prohibitus, cum debaccharetur in caeteros, in illum nihil ausus est triste committere.
For while that man yet survived, as though restrained by a certain divine power, although he raged against the rest, he dared commit nothing grievous against him.
因為當那人尚在世時，瓦倫斯彷彿被某種神聖的能力所攔阻，雖然向其餘的人施暴，卻不敢對他做出任何惡事。
