74:1
Cumque post haec ut futurorum praescius Imperator, disponendae Reipublicae sollicitudine stringeretur, ad orientem protinus mittit, ubi venturus ad bellum, tuta liberos custodia commendarat. Ibique Arcadium Augustum regnum sibi dudum traditum servare praecipit .
And after these things, when the emperor, as one foreknowing the future, was constrained by anxiety for the ordering of the Republic, he straightway sent to the East, where, when about to come to the war, he had committed his children to safe keeping. And there he charged Arcadius Augustus to preserve the kingdom long since handed over to him; but Honorius, endowed with equal dignity, he bade come more quickly to the empire of the West. When he had received him, and embraced him with paternal kisses and embraces, and handed over the helm of the western kingdom, he himself, having governed the Roman empire happily for seventeen years, passed over to better things, to receive among the most pious emperors the rewards of his merits.
