40:1
Aedes erat quaedam in inferioribus templi demersa, habens aditum inter duas porticus, quae fuerant complanatae, in qua ferramenta, aliaque operi necessaria servabantur, e qua subito globus quidam ignis emicuit, et per medium plateae percurrens, adustis et exanimatis qui aderant Judaeis, ultro citroque ferebatur. Hoc iterum saepiusque et frequentissime per totam illam diem repetens, pertinacis populi temeritatem flammis ultricibus coercebat. Cum interim pavore ingenti et trepidatione omnes qui aderant deterriti, solum verum Deum Jesum Christum confiteri cogebantur inviti.
There was a certain chamber sunk in the lower parts of the temple, having an entrance between the two porticoes that had been leveled, in which iron tools and other things necessary for the work were kept; out of it a sudden ball of fire flashed forth and, running through the middle of the open square, burning and killing the Jews who were present, was carried back and forth. Repeating this again and again, most frequently, throughout that whole day, it checked the rashness of the obstinate people with avenging flames. Meanwhile, all who were present, terrified by great fear and trembling, were driven, unwilling though they were, to confess Jesus Christ as the only true God.
在聖殿較低處有一間下陷的房間，入口在那兩座被夷平的柱廊之間，裡面存放著鐵製工具和工程所需的其他物件；忽然有一個火球從其中迸射出來，穿過廣場中央，將在場的猶太人燒灼致死，來回竄行。整整一天它再三、極頻繁地如此往返，以復仇的火焰制止那頑梗百姓的妄為。其間，所有在場的人都被極大的恐懼戰兢所驚嚇，雖不情願，卻被迫承認耶穌基督是獨一的真神。
40:2
Et ne haec casu fieri crederentur, in sequenti nocte in vestimentis omnium signaculum Crucis ita evidens apparuit, ut etiam qui diluere pro sui infidelitate voluisset, nullo genere valeret abolere. Sic deterriti Judaei atque Gentiles, locum simul et inaniter coepta reliquere.
And lest these things should be thought to happen by chance, on the following night there appeared on the garments of all so plain a sign of the Cross that even one who, in his unbelief, wished to wash it out could by no means erase it. Thus the Jews and the heathen, alike terrified, abandoned both the place and the vainly begun undertaking.
為免人以為這些事是出於偶然，次夜在眾人的衣服上顯出十字架的記號，如此清晰，以致連那因不信而想把它洗去的人，也無論如何不能抹掉。猶太人與外邦人就這樣同樣受驚，便放棄了那地方和那徒然開始的工程。
