Interea Valentinianus in Occiduis partibus, animis ( quantum aetas patiebatur) ardentibus, Rempublicam gerens, caussis etiam nunc latentibus laqueo vitam finivit. Sed hoc quidam dolo ducis sui Arbogasti factum confirmabant: idque quam maxime publica tenebat opinio. Alii quidem a commissi scelere ducem alienum dicebant, sed caussas praestitisse, quibus in hoc adolescens animi indignatione cogeretur, quod minus ei tanquam per aetatem nondum valido, libera de omnibus indulgeret imperia. Fuere tamen nonnulli sacerdotum, qui pacis ab eo qui post creatus est legatione suscepta, immunem esse ducem a mortis scelere apud Theodosium testarentur.
Meanwhile Valentinian, governing the Republic in the western parts with a spirit ardent (so far as his age allowed), ended his life by a noose, the causes even now lying hidden. But some affirmed that this had been done by the treachery of his general Arbogast; and that opinion held the public most strongly. Others indeed said that the general was a stranger to the committed crime, but had furnished the causes by which the youth, in indignation of spirit, was driven to this, because he, as though not yet strong through his age, indulged him less freely with full command over all things. Yet there were some of the priests who, having undertaken an embassy of peace from him who was afterwards created emperor, testified before Theodosius that the general was free from the crime of the death.
