Per idem tempus subreptione quadam daemonis, turpis macula religioso principi inusta est. Etenim cum apud Thessalonicam seditione exorta, quidam ex militaribus vir impetu fuisset populi furentis extinctus, repentini nuntii atrocitate succensus, ad ludos Circenses invitari populum eique ex improviso circumfundi milites, atque obtruncari passim, ut quisque occurrisset, gladio jubet, et vindictam dari non crimini, sed furori. Ob hoc cum a sacerdotibus Italiae argueretur, agnovit delictum, culpamque cum lachrymis professus, publicam poenitentiam in conspectu totius Ecclesiae exegit: et in hoc sibi tempus adscriptum, absque regali fastigio patienter implevit.
About the same time, by a certain stealth of the demon, a shameful stain was branded upon the religious prince. For when at Thessalonica a sedition had broken out, and a certain man of the military was killed by the onrush of the raging populace, the prince, inflamed by the atrocity of the sudden news, ordered the people to be invited to the games of the Circus, and the soldiers to be poured upon them unexpectedly and to be cut down everywhere—whoever met them—by the sword, and that vengeance be given not to justice but to fury. On account of this, when he was reproved by the priests of Italy, he acknowledged his fault, and confessing his guilt with tears, he performed public penance in the sight of the whole Church; and the time appointed for him in this he patiently fulfilled, apart from his royal eminence.

Quibus omnibus istud quoque mirabiliter adjecit: Lege sanxit in posterum, ut sententiae Principum super animadversione prolatae in diem tricesimum ab executoribus differentur: quo locus misericordiae, vel (si res tulisset) poenitentiae non periret.
To all these things he wondrously added this also: he sanctioned by law for the future that sentences of princes pronounced concerning capital punishment should be deferred by the executors to the thirtieth day, so that there might not perish a place for mercy, or (if the case should warrant it) for repentance.
在這一切之上，他還奇妙地加上這一條：他立法定規，此後君王所頒、論及處決的判決，須由執行者延緩到第三十日，好叫憐憫——或（若情形需要）悔改——的餘地不致喪失。
