64:1
Post haec capite ipso idololatriae dejecto, studiis vigilantissimi sacerdotis quaecumque fuerant per totam Alexandriam portenta potius, quam simulachra pari exitu et simili dedecore publicantur. Horret animus dicere, qui miseris mortalibus laquei a daemonibus praeparati sint, quae funera, quae scelera in illis, quae dibebant ἄδυτα, tegerentur: quot ibi infantum capita desecta inauratis labris inventa sint: quot miserorum cruciabiles mortes depictae.
After this, when the very head of idolatry had been cast down, by the zeal of the most vigilant bishop whatever portents—rather than images—there were throughout all Alexandria were exposed to public view with a like destruction and similar disgrace. The mind shudders to tell what snares had been prepared by the demons for wretched mortals, what deaths, what crimes were hidden in those places which they called ἄδυτα (the inmost sanctuaries): how many heads of infants, cut off, were found there with gilded lips; how many cruel deaths of unhappy victims were depicted. When these things were brought to light and carried out into the open air, although the heathen fled away for very confusion and shame, yet if anyone was able to be present, he marvelled that for so many ages he had been ensnared in deceptions so wicked and so shameful.
Hence very many of them, condemning the error and the crime being detected, embraced the faith of Christ and the worship of the true religion. For—to pass over the other outrages which in other places were perpetrated, infants being slain by violence and maidens despised and abused for the inspection of their entrails—I will mention one thing only, which, being done in the temple of Saturn, came to the knowledge of all; from which the rest also, which we have omitted, may be weighed.
