105:1
Etenim piissimus et Christi amansnosterimperatur Theodosius, qui cuncta in secundis post res ad Deum pertinentes ponit, cum sanctissima Constantinopolitana Ecclesia pastore orbata esset, deberet qoeaccipere qui eam posset regere,plurimamejusce rei curam suscepit. Ac primo quidem demandavit religiosissimo ejusdem urbis'clero ut ad gubernationem aptiores decernerent cum probatione, sibi electionem omnium praecipui reservans.
For our most pious emperor Theodosius, the lover of Christ, who places all things in second rank after those that pertain to God, when the most holy Church of Constantinople had been bereaved of its pastor and needed to receive one who could govern it, undertook very great care of this matter. And first indeed he charged the most religious clergy of that city to designate, upon due examination, those more fit for its governance, reserving to himself the choice of the foremost of all.

Deinde in his exortaimmoderatadissensione, cunctisquehinc erga multos in varia studia scissis, jubet imperator conquiri clericos in regia urbe etiam ex aliis civitatibus ob quandam ita ut fit) negotia degentes, quo inter illos praestantior absque 956 ullo affectu in episcopalem dignitatem promoveretur. Quod cum factum fuisset, postea placuit iis qui in cuncta potestatem obtinent, permitti cleroelectioncm primatis. Et ecce suffragia in me omnium minimum vencrunt; non propterjustitiam meam, sed ut ChristusJesus inme ostenderet omnem patientiam suam, juxta Apostolum ( I Timoth. i, 16).
Then, when an immoderate dissension arose among them concerning these matters, and all were split into various factions over many candidates, the emperor ordered that clerics be sought out in the imperial city, even from other cities, who were residing there on account of some business (as it happens), so that from among them the more excellent might be promoted to the episcopal dignity without any partiality. And when this had been done, it afterwards pleased those who hold power over all things that the election of the primate be permitted to the clergy. And behold, the votes came upon me, the least of all; not on account of my justice, but that Christ Jesus might show forth in me all his patience, according to the Apostle (1 Timothy 1:16).

Unde id operis incubuit sanctæ synodo episcoporum Constantinopoli versantium, ut ad me ordinandum sine mora procederent.
Whence it fell to the holy synod of bishops residing at Constantinople to proceed to my ordination without delay.
