37:1
CAp.
The faith, dearly beloved, requires that we render that portion of the discourse concerning the Lord's Passion which we promised, with the same help of Him in whom we do not doubt we are aided by your prayers. For it pertains to the common gain, if you can have me devout: because whatever is granted to our ability is expended upon your edification. After therefore that impious and detestable bargain of Judas, by which the Redeemer of the world was betrayed by him, the Jews pursuing Him, after those sacrilegious mockings, amid which His meekness was led even to the place of punishment, there were crucified with Him two thieves, gibbets being set up on either side:
37:2
quorum unus ad id usque temporis par similisque consorti, insidiatorviarum et saluti hominum semper infestus, usque ad crucem reus, fit Christi repente confessor; et inter illos acerrimos corporis animique cruciatus, quoa simul et instantia et difficultas mortis augebat, mira conversione mutatus,Memento, inquit, mei, Domine, dum veneria in regnum tuum (Luc. XXIII, 42). QuOB istam iidem exhortatio persuasit quæ doctrina imbuil? quis praedicator accendit?Non vidcrat prius acta miracula,cessaverat tunc languentium curatio, caecorum illuminatio, vivificatio mortuorum, ea ipsa quae mox erant gerenda, non aderant;
of whom one, up to that very time equal and like his companion, a lier-in-wait upon the roads and ever hostile to the safety of men, a guilty man even up to the cross, suddenly becomes a confessor of Christ; and amid those most bitter torments of body and soul, which both the imminence and the difficulty of death increased, changed by a wondrous conversion, he says: Remember me, Lord, when Thou comest into Thy kingdom (Luke 23:42). What exhortation persuaded him to this same faith, what teaching instilled it? What preacher kindled it? He had not before seen the miracles wrought, the healing of the sick had then ceased, the enlightening of the blind, the raising of the dead; those very things which were soon to be done, were not yet present;
其中一個,直到那時仍與他同伴一樣、彼此相似,是道路上的埋伏者,一向與人的安危為敵,甚至到十字架上仍是罪人,卻忽然成了基督的認信者;在那身心至苦的折磨中——臨死的逼近與艱難使之加劇——他因奇妙的悔改而改變,說:「主啊,你來到你國裡的時候,求你記念我。」(路二十三42)是甚麼勸勉說服他有這同樣的信德?是甚麼教導灌輸給他?是甚麼傳道者點燃了它?他先前並未見過所行的神蹟,那時醫治病人的事已止息,開瞎子的眼、使死人復活的事也止息了;那些即將要行的事,尚未臨到;
37:3
Cap. II. -Adjicitur ad confirmationem spei noatrae totius attestatio creaturæ.
and yet he confesses as Lord and King Him whom he sees to be the partner of his own punishment. Thence therefore arose this gift, whence faith itself received its answer; for Jesus says to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise (ibid. 43). This promise exceeds the human condition; nor is it uttered so much from the wood of the cross as from the throne of power. From that height is the reward of faith given, upon which the bond of human transgression is abolished: because the form of God did not sever itself from the form of the servant, while even amid the very torments both the inviolable Deity and the passible nature preserved their property and unity. To the confirmation of our hope is added the attestation of the whole creation.
37:4
Emittente spiritum Christo omnia elementa tremuerunt,densis tenebris splendor solis obductus, extraordinarie nocti subdidit diem;9tabilitatem suam terra profundis concussionibus labefactata non tenuit, et petrarum firmitas, confracta soliditate, dissiluit. Velum templi, quo priorum mysteria ulterius non erant obumbranda, discissum est; et multorum sanetorum corporibus excitatis, ad præmuniendam resurrectionis fidem, monumenta patuerunt (Matth. XXVII, 51-53; Marc. xv, 38; Luc. xXIII, 45, 46). In vos ergo, Judaei, coelum et terra sententiam tulit, vobis sol servitutem suam diemque subtraxit, vobis famulatum suum elementorum ordines 203 denegarunt;
When Christ sent forth His spirit, all the elements trembled; the splendour of the sun, veiled by dense darkness, extraordinarily made the day subject to night; the earth, shaken by deep convulsions, did not keep its stability, and the firmness of the rocks, their solidity broken, split asunder. The veil of the temple, by which the mysteries of former things were no longer to be overshadowed, was rent; and, the bodies of many saints being raised up, the tombs opened to fortify the faith of the resurrection (Matt. 27:51-53; Mark 15:38; Luke 23:45-46). Against you therefore, O Jews, heaven and earth pronounced sentence; against you the sun withdrew its service and its day; against you the orders of the elements denied their attendance;
當基督交出祂的靈時,眾元素都戰慄了;日頭的光輝被密雲的黑暗遮蔽,異常地使白晝屈服於黑夜;大地被深沉的震動搖撼,不能保守其穩固,磐石的堅硬也裂開崩碎。聖殿的幔子——那本用以遮蔽先前奧秘、如今再不需遮蔽的——裂開了;許多聖徒的身體復活起來,墳墓開了,以堅固復活的信德(太二十七51-53;可十五38;路二十三45-46)。因此,猶太人哪,天地都向你們宣判了;日頭向你們收回了它的服事與白晝;眾元素的次序向你們拒絕了它們的效勞;
37:5
et recedente a Icgibu8 suis ministerio creaturæ, vestra obcaecatio, vestra est significata confusio. Vobis enim dicentibus: Sanguis ejus super nos et super filios nostros (Matth. XXVII, 25); merito hoc retributum est, ut quod vestri genens impia perdidit portio, assequatur hoc fidelis gentium plenitudo. CAP. In. — Nos ergo, dHictissimi, quibus Dominus noster Jesus Christus crucifixus, non scandalum, neque stultitia, sed Dei virtus Deique sapientia est (7 Cor. I, 23); nos, inquam, spiritale semen Abrahæ, non in prole servitutis geniti, sed in familia libertatis renati;
and, the ministry of creation departing from its own laws, your blinding, your confusion was signified. For when you said: His blood be upon us and upon our children (Matt. 27:25); deservedly was this recompensed, that what the impious portion of your race lost, the faithful fullness of the nations might attain. We therefore, dearly beloved, to whom our Lord Jesus Christ crucified is not a scandal nor foolishness, but the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:23); we, I say, the spiritual seed of Abraham, not born in the offspring of servitude, but reborn in the family of liberty;
而受造之物的效勞既背離了自己的定律,你們的瞎眼、你們的混亂便得了表明。因為你們既說:「他的血歸到我們和我們的子孫身上。」(太二十七25)這報應便是應得的,就是你們同族中不敬虔的那部分所失去的,卻由外邦忠信的豐盛所得著。因此,至愛的弟兄們,我們——那些以被釘十字架的主耶穌基督為神的能力、神的智慧,而非絆腳石或愚拙的人(林前一23);我說,我們——亞伯拉罕屬靈的後裔,不是生在奴僕的後代中,乃是重生在自由的家中的人;
37:6
for whom, led out by a mighty hand and outstretched arm from the oppression of the Egyptian domination, the true and spotless Lamb, Christ, was slain (1 Cor. 5:7); let us embrace the wondrous mystery of the saving Passover, and be reformed to the image of Him who was made conformable to our deformity. Let us be raised up to Him who made the dust of our abjection the body of His glory; and, that we may be worthy to be partakers of His resurrection, let us be conformed in all things to His humility and patience. We have taken up the warfare of a great name, the discipline of a great profession. It is not lawful for the followers of Christ to depart from the royal way, but it is fitting not to be occupied with things temporal, striving toward things eternal.
Amen.,
And because we have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ, let us glorify and bear God in our body (1 Cor. 6:20); that we may be worthy to attain to those things which have been prepared for the faithful, through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honour and glory unto ages of ages. Amen.
