145:1
CAP.
Chapter I. — I doubt not indeed that your whole Fraternity knows that I embraced with all my heart the definition of the holy synod, which was celebrated for the confirmation of the faith in the city of Chalcedon: because no reason permitted that I, who grieved that the unity of the catholic faith had been disturbed by heretics, should not exultantly rejoice that it had returned to its integrity. But this you could have recognized not only from the very effect of the most blessed agreement, but also from my letters, which we afterward report, [that] I gave concerning my own to the prelate of the city of Constantinople, if he had been willing to make manifest to you the response of the Apostolic See.
Therefore, lest through malignant interpreters it should seem doubtful whether I approve what was decreed concerning the faith in the Synod of Chalcedon by your unanimity, I have directed these things written to all our brethren and fellow-bishops who took part in the aforesaid council, which the most glorious and most merciful prince, as I requested, will deign to send to your knowledge for love of the catholic faith: so that both the fraternal universality, and the hearts of all the faithful, may know that I have united my own opinion with you not only through the brethren who executed my office, but also through the approbation of the synodal acts:
CAp. II.
namely, in the sole cause of the faith—which must often be said—on account of which the general council both pleased to be assembled by the command of Christian princes and by the consent of the Apostolic See; so that, the heretics being condemned who were unwilling to be corrected, there might remain absolutely no doubt concerning the true incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore, if anyone shall ever have dared either to protect the perfidy of Nestorius, or to defend the impious dogma of Eutyches and Dioscorus, let him be cut off from the communion of the catholics; nor let him have participation of that Body whose truth he denies, most dear brethren. Chapter II.
— Concerning the keeping also of the statutes of the holy Fathers, which in the Synod of Nicaea are fixed by inviolable decrees, I admonish the observance of your Holiness, that the rights of the Churches may remain as they were ordained by those 318 divinely inspired Fathers. Let no wicked ambition covet anything alien, nor let anyone seek his own increase through the diminution of another. For however much the elation of vanity may equip itself with extorted flatteries, and estimate that its own appetites are to be strengthened by the name of councils, whatever shall have differed from the canons of the aforesaid Fathers will be weak and void.
145:5
Quorum regulis apostolica 1199 sedes quam reverenter utatur, scriptorum meornm,quibu8 Constantinopolitani antistitis conatus repuli, poterit sanctitas vestra lectione cognoscere, et me auxiliante Domino catholicæ fidei et paternarum constitutionum esse custodem. Data duodecimo kalendas Aprilis,Opilione viro clarissimo consule.
With what reverence the Apostolic See uses their rules, your Holiness will be able to recognize by the reading of my writings, by which I repelled the attempts of the prelate of Constantinople, and [to recognize] that I am, with the Lord aiding me, a guardian of the catholic faith and of the constitutions of the Fathers. Given on the twelfth day before the Kalends of April, in the consulship of Opilio, a most illustrious man.
