178:1
Solliciti ergo in invicem, sicut Apostolus uit, servare unitatem spiritus in vinculo pacis (Ephes. LXXIX, 14), singulari feritate vastabat ?
I rejoice exultantly in the Lord over the most devout affection which you have among you; since, as your writings make manifest, both the pastor is shown to love the flock, and the flock the pastor. Solicitous therefore for one another, as the Apostle says, to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace (Eph. 4:3), hasten to attain to the fruit of true patience. For what more worthy can you either wish or do than that, with the grace of God helping, you may use the faith of the most glorious prince for the advancement of a most solid peace, that beast being driven far off which, as the prophetic psalm sings (Ps. 79:14), was laying waste the vineyard of the Lord's planting with singular ferocity?
178:2
Since therefore in the Lord's sheepfold neither the ambushes of thieves nor the incursions of robbers are now feared, let your whole community return into concord, and under the teaching of the Holy Spirit let that unity be sought in all things, on account of which the Apostle says: 'Not seeking what is useful to me, but to the many, that they may be saved' (1 Cor. 10:33). Let all say and think the very same thing; let there be no strivings of opinions and disputes. What the disciples of truth in the Alexandrian Church have learned and taught down to the catholic prelates, let the same be brought forth by all the faithful in one confession: because truth, which is simple and one, does not admit variety.
178:3
Data decimo quinto kalend. Septemb., Magno et Apollnio consulibus.
But if the impious lies of the heretics have disturbed any Christians of whatever order, call them to the remedies of satisfaction, and in the spirit of meekness correct them with kindness; because, as the blessed apostle Peter says, the Lord does not delay his promise, but acts patiently for your sake, not willing that any should perish, but that all should be converted to penance (2 Pet. 3:9). It must therefore be seen to, lest the difficulty of pardon make the cure slower. Given the fifteenth of the Kalends of September, Magnus and Apollonius being consuls.
