For it is written thus: "And it came to pass after some days that Cain brought of the fruits of the earth a sacrifice to God, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his sheep and of their fat."
"And God looked upon Abel and upon his gifts; but upon Cain and upon his sacrifices He did not regard."

"And God said to Cain: Why are you grieved, and why has your countenance fallen? If you offer rightly but do not rightly divide, have you not sinned?"
"Be still: his desire shall turn to you, and you shall rule over him."
"And Cain said to Abel his brother: Let us go out into the field. And it came to pass, while they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him."
