The Church of God that sojourns in Rome, to the Church of God that sojourns in Corinth, to those called and sanctified by the will of God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Grace and peace from God Almighty be multiplied to you through Jesus Christ.
On account of the sudden and repeated calamities and misfortunes that have befallen us, beloved, we consider that we have been somewhat slow in turning our attention to the matters in dispute among you, especially the abominable and unholy faction, alien and foreign to the elect of God, which a few rash and self-willed persons have kindled to such a pitch of madness that your honorable and renowned name, worthy of all men's love, has been greatly blasphemed.
For who that had stayed among you did not approve your most virtuous and steadfast faith? Who did not admire your sober and forbearing godliness in Christ? Who did not proclaim the magnificent character of your hospitality? And who did not bless your perfect and assured knowledge?
For you did all things without partiality, and walked in the ordinances of God, submitting yourselves to your rulers and rendering due honor to the elders among you. You charged the young to think modest and seemly thoughts; you instructed the women to do all things with a blameless, dignified, and pure conscience, loving their own husbands as is fitting; and you taught them, abiding within the rule of submission, to manage their household affairs with dignity, being altogether discreet.
