And what wonder is it if those who in Christ were entrusted by God with such a work appointed the persons aforesaid? Seeing that even the blessed Moses, a faithful servant in all the house, recorded in the sacred books all the things that were enjoined upon him, whom also the rest of the prophets followed, jointly bearing witness to the things ordained by him.
For when jealousy arose concerning the priesthood, and the tribes were contending which of them should be adorned with the glorious name, he commanded the twelve heads of the tribes to bring to him rods inscribed with the name of each tribe; and taking them he bound them and sealed them with the signet rings of the tribal heads, and laid them up in the tabernacle of witness upon the table of God.
And when morning came, he called together all Israel, the six hundred thousand men, and showed the tribal heads the seals, and opened the tabernacle of witness and took out the rods; and the rod of Aaron was found not only to have budded, but also to bear fruit.
What do you think, beloved? Did not Moses know beforehand that this would happen? Most certainly he knew; but that no disorder might arise in Israel, he did this, that the name of the true and only God might be glorified; to whom be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.
