But that we may also bring forward examples from the nations: many kings and rulers, when some time of pestilence had set in, having received an oracle, gave themselves over to death, that they might rescue their fellow citizens by their own blood; and many withdrew from their own cities, that they might not cause faction any further.
We know of many among ourselves who have delivered themselves into bonds, that they might ransom others; many gave themselves into slavery, and taking their price, fed others.
So delivering herself to danger, she went out for love of her fatherland and of the people who were under siege; and the Lord delivered Holofernes into the hand of a woman.
