49:1
67, S. Crucis in Jerusalem 99, homil. 50, Taurinensis, Laurentianus x, Plut. xiv, pag. 288, et IV, Plut. XXXIII bibl. olim S. Crucis Minor. Convent. nunc in Laurentiana.
This homily, in which Peter's compunction is clearly proved, I judge is not to be ascribed to St Ambrose, as is read in two codices — Vatican 1277, page 62, and the Orvieto one — and in some editions; but rather to the holy bishop of Turin, Maximus. This can be gathered from its connection with the preceding one, from the similar manner of writing, from the heaping-up of antitheses which is proper to Maximus, and from the number of codices in which his name is inscribed. These codices are five: St Gall homily 67, Santa Croce in Jerusalem 99, homily 50, the Turin one, the Laurentian X, Plut. XIV, page 288, and IV, Plut. XXXIII of the library formerly of Santa Croce of the Friars Minor, now in the Laurentian.
49:2
Supra laudatus codex Vaticanus 1277 habet inscriptionem hujusmodi: Sermo in natali S. Petri proprius; Vaticanus alter 6451: Sermo in vinculis S. Petri. Alcuinus pag. 536 edit. Venet. 1537 eamdem sub nomine Maximi inter sermones festi SS. Petri et Pauli collocavit. Gymnicus vero pag. 136, Galesinius pag. 128, Raynaudus pag. 216, Curndius tom. II, pag.
The above-praised Vatican codex 1277 has a title of this kind: 'A Sermon Proper for the Birthday of St Peter'; another Vatican, 6451: 'A Sermon on the Chains of St Peter.' Neither of them can fit: not the first, because the birthday of the saints is wont to be called the day of their passing to glory; not the second, since nothing about the feast of Peter's chains is read in this homily. The Turin codex has 'Likewise, and concerning the same St Peter'; the rest, 'What follows,' namely the same homily, which is 'On the Penitence of Peter.' Alcuin, page 536 of the Venice edition of 1537, placed the same under the name of Maximus among the sermons for the feast of Sts Peter and Paul. But Gymnicus, page 136, Galesinius, page 128, Raynaudus, page 216, Curndius, tome II, page ...

1237, et Margarinus in Bibl. Max. tom. VI, pag. 24, designato titulo: De eodem Petro apostolo, S. Maximo ascripserunt. Nos et titulum, et idem homiliæ principium servamus (quod alii pro libito mutavere) ut in Maurina appendice serm. S. Augustini num. 192, pag. 226, edit. Antuerp. an. 1700, et in codice Vaticano 6451, legimus. Astroximus a superiore dominica, S. Petrum in Salvatoris passione suis erroribus profecisse, et posteaquam negavit Dominum b Deum, fuisse meliorem Fidelior enim factus est, postquam fidem se perdidisse deOevit; atque ideo majorem gratiam reperit quam amisit; tanquam bonus enim pastor tuendum gregem accepit, ut qui sibi ante infirmus fuerat, fieret e omnibus firmamentum;
... page 1237, and Margarinus in the Bibliotheca Maxima, tome VI, page 24, under the assigned title 'Concerning the Same Apostle Peter,' ascribed it to St Maximus. We preserve both the title and the same opening of the homily (which others have changed at their pleasure), as we read in the Maurist appendix to the sermons of St Augustine, no. 192, page 226, of the Antwerp edition of the year 1700, and in the Vatican codex 6451. We showed from last Sunday that St Peter profited by his own errors in the Saviour's passion, and that after he denied the Lord and God he became better. For he was made more faithful after he wept that he had lost his faith; and therefore he found greater grace than he had lost; for as a good shepherd he received the flock to be guarded, so that he who before had been weak for himself might become a support for all;
……第一二三七頁,以及馬爾加里努斯在《宏大文庫》第六卷第二十四頁,在所定的題名「論同一位使徒彼得」之下,把它歸於聖馬克西姆。我們既保留題名,也保留這篇講道原本的開頭(別人隨己意更改了它),正如我們在《聖奧古斯丁講道附錄》第一九二號(1700 年安特衛普版第二二六頁)及梵蒂岡抄本 6451 中所讀到的。我們從上主日已說明:聖彼得在救主受難中藉自己的過錯得了益處,並且在他否認了主神之後反倒變得更好。因為他哭泣自己失了信德之後,就變得更有信德;因此他所尋得的恩典比他所失去的更大;因為他作為良善的牧人領受了那當看守的羊群,使那先前於己軟弱的人,成了眾人的支柱;
49:4
d et qui ipse interrogationis tentatione nutaverat, caeteros fidei stabilitate fundaret. Denique pro soliditate devotionis Ecclesiarum petra dicitur, sicut ait Dominus: Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram ædificabo Ecclesiam meam (Matth. XVI). Petra enim dicitur, eo quod primus in nationibus fidei fundamenta posuerit, et tanquam saxum immobile totius operis Christiani compagem, molemque contineat. Petra e autem pro devotione Petrus dicitur, et petra pro virtute Dominus nuncupatur, sicut ait Apostolus: Bibebant autem de f apirituali consequente eos petra; petra autem erat Christus (1 Cor. x). Recte consortium meretur nominis, qui consortium meretur et operis;
and he who himself had wavered under the trial of the questioning might ground the rest in the stability of faith. In short, for the solidity of his devotion he is called the rock of the Churches, as the Lord says: 'Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church' (Matthew 16). For he is called a rock because he first laid among the nations the foundations of faith, and like an immovable stone holds together the framework and mass of the whole Christian work. But Peter is called 'rock' for his devotion, and the Lord is named 'rock' for his power, as the Apostle says: 'And they drank of the spiritual rock that followed them; and that rock was Christ' (1 Corinthians 10). Rightly he earns fellowship in the name who earns fellowship also in the work;
那先前在盤問的試探下曾動搖的人,得以用堅固的信德堅立其餘的人。總之,因他虔敬的堅固,他被稱為眾教會的磐石,正如主所說:「你是彼得(磐石),我要把我的教會建造在這磐石上」(馬太福音十六章)。他被稱為磐石,是因他首先在列國中奠立信德的根基,並像不移的石頭,托住整個基督工程的架構與重量。彼得因虔敬被稱為磐石,主則因權能被稱為磐石,正如使徒所說:「他們都喝了那隨著他們的靈磐石所出的水;那磐石就是基督」(哥林多前書十章)。凡在工作上配得團契的,在名號上也配得團契,這是理所當然的;
49:5
in eadem enim domo Petrus fundamentum posuit, Petrus plantat, Dominus incrementum dat, Dominus irriguum subministrat (Matth. IV). Petrus enim tentationibus suis proficit, tletibus suis gaudet, periculis suis crescit. g Sic namque in mari, dum super uncias temerarius viator ingreditur, nutat incessu, sed convalescit affectu; periclitatur corpore, sed devotione non labitur; mergitur pedibus, sed Cbristi dextera h sustentatur; sustentat tides, quem unda mergebat; et quem fluctuum procella turbabat, Salvatoris dilectio confirmabat. i Ambulavit enim in mari Petrus magis dilectione quam pedibus; non enim videbat ubi pedum vestigium poneret; videbat autem ubi figeret vestigium caritatis.
for in the same house Peter laid the foundation, Peter plants, the Lord gives the increase, the Lord supplies the watering (cf. 1 Corinthians 3). For Peter profits by his temptations, rejoices in his weepings, grows by his perils. For so upon the sea, while the daring wayfarer steps upon the waves, he wavers in his going, but grows strong in affection; he is endangered in body, but slips not in devotion; he sinks with his feet, but is upheld by Christ's right hand; faith upholds him whom the wave was sinking; and him whom the storm of the billows was troubling, the Saviour's love was strengthening. For Peter walked upon the sea by love rather than by his feet; for he saw not where he should set the print of his foot, but he saw where he should fix the footstep of charity.
Legimus in Veteri Testamento (Exod. XIV) filios Israel per mare Rubrum siccis itineribus ambulasse, et ad securitatem gradientium, ne laberetur unda, in soliditatem quamdam eam fuisse mutatam.
For, set upon the sea, he beholds the Lord, and led by love of him he goes down into the sea; he thinks not of the failing waters, nor of the running streams; and while he looks to Christ, he looks not at the element. He believes that even amid the waves he will find a solid footing by faith: though the sea be tossed by billows, the deep by winds, Peter's path which leads to the Lord is nevertheless not troubled. Peter therefore walks upon the waters, and beneath his feet the soft wave does not yield. We read in the Old Testament (Exodus 14) that the sons of Israel walked through the Red Sea by dry ways, and that, for the safety of those going, the wave, lest it should slip, was changed into a certain solidity.
49:7
1 Quanto hoc melius, ubi, ambulante Petro, nec mutatur unda, nec labitur, nec solidatur aqua, nec refugit. Melius, inquam, est, ubi eadem unda, quae fluctuat et sustentat, ubi idem gurges, qui mergitur et ' famulatur. Illic ut portaretur per mare populus Israel, meatum suum natura perdiderat: hic portatur in aquis Petrus, m cursum suum fluenta non perdunt. Temerarius ergo viator apostolus, novi itineris viam carpit, modo curvati gurgitis molem ascendit, modo subsidentis sinus, unda descendit, et inter marinos fluctus ascensus n illi itineris, descensusque non deest. Sed ubi turbatus ventis, exagitatus procellis, o incipit timere quod credidit, statim ei gurges subtrahitur, unda subducitur;
How much better is this, where, as Peter walks, the wave is neither changed nor slips, the water is neither made solid nor recoils. Better, I say, it is, where the same wave both surges and upholds, where the same flood both engulfs and serves. There, that the people of Israel might be borne through the sea, nature had lost its own course; here Peter is borne upon the waters, and the streams lose not their own course. The daring wayfarer therefore, the apostle, takes the road of a new journey: now he ascends the mass of the curved flood, now he descends the wave of the subsiding hollow, and amid the sea-billows the ascent and descent of his journey is not lacking to him. But when, troubled by winds, tossed by storms, he begins to fear what he had believed, at once the flood is drawn away from him, the wave is withdrawn;
這是何等更美之事:當彼得行走時,波浪既不變化也不滑動,水既不成堅固也不退縮。我說,這更美:在此同一波浪既翻騰又托住,同一洪流既吞沒又服事。在那裡,為要使以色列百姓得渡過海,大自然失去了自己的常道;在這裡,彼得被托在水上,而水流卻不失自己的常道。所以那大膽的行路者,就是使徒,走上了一條新旅程的道路:他時而登上那彎曲洪流的隆起,時而下入那低陷凹處的波浪,在海浪之間,他旅途的上升與下降並不缺少。但當他被風攪擾、被風暴顛簸、開始懼怕他所曾相信的,洪流就立即從他退去,波浪就抽離;
49:8
P mox defatiscente fide, fatescit semita; tunc exclamans, Dominum Jesum salvum se fieri deprecatur; quem q apprehensum manu Salvator liberat, et objurgat, dicens: Modicæ fidei, quare dubistati?
and soon, as his faith flags, his path gives way; then, crying out, he beseeches the Lord Jesus that he be saved; and the Saviour, taking him by the hand, frees him and rebukes him, saying, 'O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?' That is: Why art thou of so little faith, that thou who by believing hadst begun to walk on the sea didst not by persevering pass over it? For it is written: 'He that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved' (Matthew 10). But while thou delayest and doubtest, thou hast lost the way thou hadst entered upon. Why, I say, art thou of so little faith, that thou dost not, by the same faith with which thou hadst begun to come, arrive? Understand therefore that on the sea faith bore thee, faithlessness sank thee.
Therefore, brethren, holy Peter, while he tosses, while he sinks, while he is in peril, so comes to the Lord; he shows us that one hastens to Christ only through perils; for there are many diabolical waves in this world, many shipwrecks of temptations, from which we can be freed thus, if the Saviour stretches out his hand to us as we cry. Let us therefore not cease to cry to the Lord: he will not deny his accustomed help ... [and gave him] solidity, namely an inward and stable love toward the Lord, by which he merited to be established as the rock of the Church, or the foundation of the new spiritual building, and to rejoice in the likeness and property of the name of Christ himself.
49:10
Tertio docet Petrum iti nationibus primum fundamenta fidei posuisse, atque super eum tanquam immobile saxum totum Christianum opus erigi de sustentari. Quarto asserit, quæ pla Petris in Ecclesia, id est magisterio doctrine verbi divini spargit scilima, irrigationibus cœlestibus crescere; et ad maturitatem pervenire. His igitur suprema Petri potestas, præeminentia, doctrinæ veritas, et universale corporis mystici regimen a Christo Petro commissum comprobantur.
Thirdly he teaches that Peter first laid among the nations the foundations of faith, and that upon him, as upon an immovable stone, the whole Christian work is raised and sustained. Fourthly he asserts that what Peter plants in the Church — that is, in the teaching of the doctrine of the divine word — is watered by heavenly irrigations, grows, and comes to maturity. By these things, therefore, the supreme power of Peter, his pre-eminence, the truth of his doctrine, and the universal governance of the mystical body, committed by Christ to Peter, are proved.
