65:1
Hanc quoque homiliam Ballerinii S. Maximo nostro adjudicarunt, perpensis ante tum Vaticanis, tum basilicæ S. Petri mss. codicibus, quorum nonnulli eamdem S. Leoni Magno inscribunt. 56, duosque Vallicellanos xv, pag. 71 et. A 7 pag. 197, conceptis verbis nomen ejus deferunt codex XII S. Crucis in Jerusalem pag. 77, codex alter S. Crucis Minor. u in Laurent. pag. 128, Farfeusis B, Augieusis xv, Martinensis, Veronensis 437, duoque demum Ambrosiani; scilicet C 98 vetustissimus, et H 146. His mss.
This homily also the Ballerini adjudged to our St Maximus, having first weighed both the Vatican manuscript codices and those of the basilica of St Peter, some of which ascribe it to St Leo the Great. For much superior in number and excellence are the codices which favour the same bishop of Turin; for besides two Vatican ones, 1273 p. 56 and 1277 p. 56, and two Vallicellian ones, 15 p. 71 and A 7 p. 197, which in express words bring forth his name, there are codex 12 of Holy Cross in Jerusalem p. 77, another codex of Holy Cross of the Minorites in the Laurentian p. 128, the Farfa B, the Reichenau 15, the Martinensis, the Veronese 437, and finally two Ambrosian ones, namely C 98, most ancient, and H 146. To these manuscripts
65:2
libris antiquitate omniumque existimatione prræclarissimis accedit Alcuini testimonium, qui suo in Homiliario memoratae editionis, pag. 71, S. Maximo eam tribuit. Et ne editorum noniina quæ supra retulimus iterum repetamus, sat monuisse erit nullum reperiri non concordem cum Gymnico pag. 113, apud quem est homilia tertia de festivitate SS. apostolorum Petri et Pauli. Beatissimorum apostolorum Petri et Pauli inseparabilem fidem, passionemque germanam omni nos devotione, fratres, necesse est celebrare, quia et laudabitis eos vita ad gloriosissimum perduxit occasum, et mirilicus obitus perpetuam transmisit ad vitam. Et licet. in Petro fides emineat, in Paulo doctrina precellat;
books most illustrious in antiquity and in the esteem of all, is added the testimony of Alcuin, who in his Homiliary of the aforesaid edition, p. 71, attributes it to St Maximus. And that we may not again repeat the names of the editors which we have recounted above, it will be enough to have noted that no one is found in disagreement with Gymnicus p. 113, in whom it is the third homily on the festival of the holy apostles Peter and Paul. It is necessary, brethren, that we celebrate with all devotion the inseparable faith and the kindred passion of the most blessed apostles Peter and Paul, since both their praiseworthy life led them to a most glorious end, and their wondrous death transmitted them to perpetual life. And although in Peter faith is eminent, in Paul doctrine excels;
這些在古老程度上、在眾人推崇上皆極為卓著的抄本,還加上阿爾昆的見證,他在前述版本的講道集第 71 頁將此篇歸於聖馬克西穆斯。為免再度重複上文所列各編者之名,只需指出:無人與基姆尼庫斯版第 113 頁相左,在該版中此為論聖使徒彼得與保羅節期的第三篇講道。弟兄們,我們必須以全然的虔敬慶祝至福使徒彼得與保羅那不可分割的信德與相親相連的受難,因為他們可稱讚的生命既引他們至最榮耀的終結,他們奇妙的死又將他們遞送至永恆的生命。雖然在彼得身上信德卓越,在保羅身上教義超群;
65:3
yet the mastery of Paul is the fullness of faith, and the belief of Peter is the foundation of doctrine; whom so great a dignity of heavenly election visited, that the one from a fisherman became a teacher, the other from a persecutor a defender. But in this the majesty of almighty God is to be extolled, who by a marvellous inspiration gave the grace of teaching to the unlearned, and made the enemy to love what he hated, and to assert the faith which he assailed. He did not take away the one's fishing, but changed it; he blinded the other's eyes, so that, having received a purer light, with the keen edge of a most clear mind he might see beyond human sight. How great, then, was Peter's merit before his God, that to him, after the rowing of a small boat, the helm of the whole Church should be handed over?
65:4
f Aut quantum in apostolatus sui ministerio complacuisse Christo credimus Paulum, cui tantum placere potuit perseculor?
Or how greatly do we believe that Paul pleased Christ in the ministry of his apostolate, seeing that a persecutor could please him so much? For he pleased, because he was contending, not by the zeal of a wicked heart, but by the incautious devotion of a simple ignorance. In short, as soon as the Spirit of truth was poured into his senses, he showed at once that he had raged not with hatred of Christ, but had erred innocently through love of the ancestral law. What, then, shall I say especially concerning him, when he himself is his own most faithful witness? For, since he is unwilling to boast his own praises, and yet desires to announce the majesty of Christ, he more modestly confesses what was wrought in him. As though concerning another:
65:5
i Scio hominem, inquit, in Christo ante annos quatuordecim, sive in corpore, sive extra corpus nescio, Deus scit, raptum hujusmodi. Et scio hujusmodi hominem sive in corpore, sive extra corpus nescio, Deus scit, quoniam raptus est in paradisum, et audivit arcana 226 verba, quæ non licet homini loqui (II Cor. XII). Quid hoc Apostolo magnificentius, cui in medio mortalium constituto, et supra coelos ire datum, et ad terras redire concessum est? k Quid hoc beatius viro, qui inter secreta paradisi 1 ediscers meruit quod nec lingua hominis loqui possit, nec quisquam mereretur audire? m Et cum tantæ sint sublimitatis illa quæ docuit, ut comprehendere ea mens humana non possit;
'I know a man,' he says, 'in Christ above fourteen years ago—whether in the body, or out of the body, I know not, God knoweth—such a one caught up. And I know such a man—whether in the body, or out of the body, I know not, God knoweth—that he was caught up into paradise, and heard secret words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter' (2 Cor. 12). What is more magnificent than this Apostle, to whom, set in the midst of mortals, it was both given to go above the heavens, and granted to return to the earth? What is more blessed than this man, who, amid the secrets of paradise, deserved to learn thoroughly that which neither the tongue of man could utter, nor anyone deserve to hear? And since those things which he taught are of such sublimity that the human mind cannot comprehend them,
他說:「我認得一個在基督裡的人,他在十四年前——或在身內,或在身外,我都不知道,神知道——被提到如此之境。我又知道這人——或在身內,或在身外,我都不知道,神知道——他被提到樂園裡,聽見隱秘的言語,是人不可說的」(哥林多後書十二章)。有什麼比這位使徒更宏偉呢?他既處於世人之中,卻蒙賜升到諸天之上,又蒙准回到地上?有什麼比這人更有福呢?他在樂園的奧秘之中,蒙准徹底領悟那人的舌頭所不能說、也無人配得聽見的事?既然他所教導的事如此崇高,以致人的心思不能領會;
65:6
quantæ illud putamus esse gloriae quod prodere sibi asserit non licere? Quid etiam de Petro referam, cujus tanta a Deo est approbata justitia, n tantaque ei potestas attributa judicandi, ut in arbitrio ejns poneretur cæleste judicium ? Perspicite ergo, et aestimate quanto nobis sit Petrus apostolus honore reverendus, cujus sententiam in terris prolatam sempiterni judicis æquitas non o repellit. Et ideo diligenter intendite quæ sit ejus p gloriac magnitudo, cui dum claves q regni committuntur aeterni, r coelum illi claudere et aperire permissum est. Horum itaque, carissimi, per universum mundum veneranda hodie passio celebratur: horum hodie concursu 8 lætissimo excolit Roma martyrium;
how great glory do we think that to be, which he declares it is not lawful for him to disclose? What also shall I relate of Peter, whose righteousness has been so approved by God, and to whom so great a power of judging has been attributed, that the heavenly judgment was placed in his discretion? Consider, therefore, and estimate with how great honour the apostle Peter is to be revered by us, whose sentence, pronounced on earth, the equity of the eternal Judge does not reject. And therefore attend diligently to what is the greatness of his glory, to whom, while the keys of the eternal kingdom are committed, it was permitted to shut and to open heaven. Of these, therefore, dearest brethren, the venerable passion is celebrated today throughout the whole world: today Rome honours their martyrdom with a most joyful concourse;
我們豈不當認為那榮耀何等之大——他宣稱那是他不可揭露的?對於彼得,我又當述說什麼呢?他的公義已如此蒙神認可,如此偉大的審判權柄已賦予他,以致屬天的審判權交在他裁量之中?所以你們當思想並估量,使徒彼得該當受我們何等大的尊敬——他在地上所宣告的判決,永恆審判者的公正不加拒絕。因此你們當殷勤留意,他榮耀的偉大何等之大——當永恆國度的鑰匙交託他時,他蒙准關閉並開啟天堂。所以,最親愛的弟兄們,他們可敬的受難今日遍及全世界得以慶祝:今日羅馬以最歡樂的群集敬奉他們的殉道;
65:7
et quorum dudum impia t persecuta est sanguinem, eorum nunc peculiari devota patrocinio. gloriatur u.
and those whose blood impiety once persecuted, in these now, devoted, it glories with special patronage.
