105:1
Etsi Maurini nullum se hac in homilia reperire S. Amhrosii vestigium scribant, eam tamen num. 43 inter sermones ejusdem, edit. Paris. 1690, collocant; quam nos sancto Maximo ascribimus, auctoritate codicum Sangallensis num. 21, et 99 Sanctæ Crucis in Jerusalem num. 88 cum titulo Increpatio ad papulum. Sequimur autem lectionem laudate editionis operum sancti Ambrosii. Deberem, fratres, post hos complures dies aliquid uberius prædicare, et revertens a tanlo examine sacerdotum, dulci nos sermone reficere. Bene dixi examine sacerdotum; quia sicut apes de divinarum Scripturarum flosculis suavia mella conficiunt, et quidquid ad medicinam pertinet animarum oris sui arte componunt;
雖然茅利諾派學者寫道,他們在這篇講道中找不到聖安波羅修的任何痕跡,卻仍將它列為一六九零年巴黎版聖安波羅修講道集中的第四十三篇;但我們憑聖加倫抄本第二十一號,以及耶路撒冷聖十字架抄本第八十八號(其標題為《對民眾的責備》)的權威,將它歸於聖瑪西模。然而我們採用前述聖安波羅修文集版本的讀法。弟兄們,經過這許多天,我本應更豐富地講道些什麼,並在從如此盛大的司鐸聚會歸來之後,用甘美的言辭使你們得著滋養。我說「司鐸的聚會」說得好;因為正如蜜蜂從神聖經卷的小花朵中釀出甘甜的蜜,並用口的技藝調配一切有益於醫治靈魂之物;
Although the Maurists write that they find in this homily no trace of St. Ambrose, they nevertheless place it as no. 43 among his sermons in the Paris edition of 1690; whereas we ascribe it to St. Maximus, on the authority of the codices of St. Gall no. 21 and of Holy Cross in Jerusalem no. 88, which bear the title 'A Rebuke to the People.' We follow, however, the reading of the aforesaid edition of the works of St. Ambrose. I ought, brethren, after these many days, to preach something more richly, and, returning from so great an assembly of priests, to refresh you with a sweet discourse. Well have I said 'an assembly of priests'; for just as bees fashion sweet honey from the little flowers of the divine Scriptures, and by the art of their mouth compose whatever pertains to the medicine of souls;
105:2
rightly are priests compared to bees; for just as bees display chastity of body, offer the food of heavenly life, and wield the sting of the law—being pure for sanctification, sweet for refreshment, severe for punishment. They are indeed to be compared to bees, who are contained, as in a certain hive, by the grace of Mother Church, in which, arranging the little cells of diverse merits by their most sweet preaching, they bring forth from the one swarm of the Savior many swarms of Christians. Since I have never ceased, brethren, to correct you with fatherly affection, I marvel that you have profited nothing by my admonitions, and I grieve that my frequent preaching does not amend you unto any advance of salvation, but rather binds you fast under a certain penalty of testimony against you.
105:3
Prædicano enim sacerdotis in plebe salvandis. est correctio, et. contestatio judicandis; contestamur enim illis ante judicium, quod illos maneat in ipso judicio; ut tunc omni excusatione submota, et rei sint de peccatis, et obnoxii de contemptu. Unde et ego interdum parcens vobis tacere velim: sed malo vos contumaciæ causas reddere, quam me 373 negligentiæ sustinere judicium. Comperi enim, fratres, quod per absentiam meam ita rari quique ad ecclesiam veniatis, ita pauci admo dum procedatis, quasi me proficiscente, mecum pariter veneritis, et quasi cum necessitatibus ego pertrahor, vos mecum traxerit ipsa necessitas, Pariter a domo Dei absentes sumus;
因為司鐸對民眾的講道,對將要得救的人是矯正,對將要受審判的人是見證;因為我們在審判之前預先向他們作見證,說明在審判之時有什麼在等待他們;如此,到那時,一切藉口既被除去,他們就既因罪而有罪,又因藐視而有責。因此我有時也願意緘默,寬待你們;但我寧願你們為自己的頑梗交帳,也不願我承受疏忽之罪的審判。弟兄們,我已得知,在我不在的時候,你們中間來教會的竟如此稀少,前來的實在如此之少,彷彿當我起程時,你們也與我一同出行,又彷彿當我被必要之事拖走時,那同一的必要也把你們與我一同拖走。我們一同不在神的殿中;
For a priest's preaching to the people is a correction to those who are to be saved, and a testimony against those who are to be judged; for we give testimony beforehand to those before the judgment, of what awaits them in the judgment itself; so that then, every excuse being removed, they may both be guilty of their sins and answerable for their contempt. Whence I too would sometimes wish to be silent, sparing you: but I would rather that you render account for your obstinacy, than that I bear the judgment of negligence. For I have learned, brethren, that during my absence so very few of you come to church, so very few indeed come forward, as though, when I set out, you had come along together with me, and as though, when I am dragged off by necessities, the same necessity had drawn you along with me. Together we are absent from the house of God;
105:4
but this is the difference, that necessity makes me absent, while your own will makes you absent. Do you not know that, even if I am absent from the church, Christ, who is everywhere, is not absent from His Church? You come, brother, to church; do you not find there the Savior, the Bishop of bishops? For the Christian who then only comes forward to church when the bishop is present, seems to have come forward not so much for God's sake as for man's; nor to have fulfilled the office of a Christian who fears God, but to have paid the deference of a friend obliging another. Why then do I reproach you, when you could refute me with a single word? For I am refuted, since in this matter I see the clergy more negligent than you. For how can I correct the sons, when I cannot amend the brethren?
105:5
Or with what confidence should I be angry with the laity, when out of shame I fall silent before those who share my modesty? But I, brethren, do not speak of all. Certainly some are devout, and others negligent: I name no one; let each man's own conscience convict him.
