26:1
433. pag. 236, Reginæ ii, pag. 120; ex diversis bibliothecis reliqui. Codex Laurentianus i, Plut. XIX, PII. 70, conceptis verbis habet:
From this homily no less than from many others it is plainly proved that the Roman editors, in preparing the edition of the works of St. Ambrose, consulted neither the ancient manuscript codices nor the earlier editions of the Fathers, since they included this homily among the sermons of that same holy Doctor. Nor indeed did they err only in naming the author, but also in the title. Both must be demonstrated. And indeed, as concerns the first point, we produce twelve codices, repeatedly cited, which assign this homily to St. Maximus, of which four are Vatican: namely 4951, 4222, Palatinus 433 (p. 236), Reginensis 11 (p. 120); the rest from various libraries. The Laurentian codex 1, Plut. XIX, Pl. 70, has in express words:

Sermo S, Maximi episcopi unde supra, Casinensis item 106, pag. 50, a. t., Novariensis 27, pag. 135, Verceliensis 81, Lucensis 85. Augiensis xvi, Modoetiensis B in, Taurinensis tandem homil. 25 De Epiphania Domini. Gymnicus, qui 25 annis praecessit Romanam Ambrosii editionem, Inter Maximianas homilias collocavit num. 5, pag. 55. dymnicum secuti sunt Galesinius homilia 5 De Epiphania, pag. 102, Combefisius, tom. II, pag. 79, Cumdius tom. I, paR. 508, Margarinus m Biblioth. Max. tom. VI, pag. 12, et Raynaudus pag. 202. Titulus vero prorsus alienus eat ab homilia. Sic enim in edit. Rom. Sixtina haec homilia inscripta est: De baptismo Christi;
「聖馬克西姆主教的講道,出處同上」;同樣,卡西諾抄本106(第50頁,a欄,上端)、諾瓦拉抄本27(第135頁)、韋切利抄本81、盧卡抄本85、奧吉亞抄本16、蒙扎抄本B三號,以及最後都靈抄本,第25篇講道,《論主的顯現》。金尼庫斯較羅馬版安波羅修早二十五年,將它列入馬克西姆諸講道中為第5篇(第55頁)。追隨金尼庫斯的有:加勒西尼烏斯(第5篇講道,《論顯現》,第102頁)、孔貝菲斯(第二卷,第79頁)、庫姆迪烏斯(第一卷,第508頁)、瑪爾加里努斯在《至大文庫》中(第六卷,第12頁)、以及雷諾杜斯(第202頁)。但那標題與這篇講道全然不合。因為在羅馬西斯篤版中,這篇講道題為《論基督的洗禮》;
'A sermon of St. Maximus the bishop, from the place above'; likewise the Casinensian 106 (p. 50, col. a, at the top), the Novariensian 27 (p. 135), the Vercellensian 81, the Lucensian 85, the Augiensian 16, the Modoetiensian B 3, and finally the Taurinensian, homily 25, 'On the Epiphany of the Lord.' Gymnicus, who preceded the Roman edition of Ambrose by twenty-five years, placed it among the Maximian homilies as no. 5 (p. 55). Following Gymnicus were Galesinius (homily 5, 'On the Epiphany,' p. 102), Combefis (vol. II, p. 79), Cumdius (vol. I, p. 508), Margarinus in the Bibliotheca Maxima (vol. VI, p. 12), and Raynaudus (p. 202). But the title is wholly foreign to the homily. For thus in the Roman Sixtine edition this homily is inscribed: 'On the Baptism of Christ';
26:3
cum tamen nullum de eo verbum faciat auctor, et a capite ad calcem magos Christi natum inquirentes collaudet, et Judæos incredulos vehementer redarguat. Salutare nobis est, fratres, atque conveniens, ut concurrentes ad festa dominica et mysteria Salvatoris nostri, de cujus nativitate gavisi sumus, a ejus manifestatione ketemur: quia sicut nascendo gloriosus est Dei Filius, ita apparendo mirabilis. Mirum namque quod Christus processit ex virgine; nec minus magnificum quod ostensus e coelo est. Mirum valde quod novum hominem terra suscepit; stupendum nihiloniinus quod novum hunc hominem nova de coelo stella prodiderit. Apud Judaeam Christus in præsepi pastoribus vagiebat;
然而作者對洗禮隻字未提,反而從頭到尾稱讚那尋找新生基督的博士,並嚴厲斥責不信的猶太人。弟兄們,這對我們是有益且合宜的:當我們聚集慶祝主的節期和我們救主的奧秘——我們既已為他的降生歡喜——就當為他的顯現歡樂:因為神的兒子在降生時何等榮耀,在顯現時也何等奇妙。基督由童貞女而出,實在奇妙;他從天上被顯明,也同樣壯麗。地承受了這新人,何等奇妙;一顆從天而降的新星宣告了這新人,也同樣令人驚嘆。在猶太,基督在馬槽中向牧人啼哭;
although the author says not a word about it, and from head to foot praises the magi who sought the newborn Christ, and vehemently rebukes the unbelieving Jews. It is salutary and fitting for us, brethren, that as we assemble for the feasts of the Lord and the mysteries of our Savior — over whose nativity we have rejoiced — we should be glad at his manifestation: because, as the Son of God is glorious in being born, so he is wonderful in appearing. For it is marvelous that Christ proceeded from a virgin; and no less magnificent that he was shown forth from heaven. Very marvelous that the earth received the new man; no less astonishing that a new star from heaven made this new man known. In Judea Christ was wailing in the manger before the shepherds;
26:4
Apud Judæos sordebat in pannis; apud gentes fulgebat in gloria.
and in Chaldea he was gleaming among the stars before the eyes of the magi. Among the Jews he lay lowly in swaddling clothes; among the Gentiles he shone in glory. And indeed it was necessary that a heavenly testimony should precede the Lord of the heavens, and that a sign of light should reveal the Author of light. Great and awesome is this mystery, brethren, when one and the same is announced as God from the Father and man from the mother; one and the same the son of a woman and the son of majesty; one and the same a partaker of men and the Lord of angels. For who can reckon of how great a sacrament, and of how great a glory it is, that he who feeds all things should suck at the breast, and that he who furnishes the substance of life from heaven to all living creatures should, for the salvation of the earthborn, be nourished with earthly milk?
26:5
Nullus ergo ambigat, nemo cunctetur, quod Christus in terra degens fulgebat in coelo, quia sic venit ad terras, c. ut non relinqueret coelum. Et inde est quod virginalem hunc puerum laudant angeli, mirantur pastores, coelum attestatur, venerantur et magi, quia mystica ejus nativitas sempiterno gaudio et terram lætificavit et coclum. Hunc ergo regem cœlestium hominumque rectorem, sub carnis mysterio venientem, invidus tremit Herodes, Judæa inlidelis abjurat. Tremit Herodes infantem regiae dignitatis, quia bonitatem nascentis ignorat,: abjurat Christum Judæa, quem prædicat, quia impietatibus suis metuens justi judicis refugit æquitatem;
所以,誰也不要懷疑,誰也不要遲疑:基督居於地上時仍在天上發光,因為他來到地上,卻未曾離開天。也因此,天使讚美這位由童貞女所生的孩子,牧人稱奇,天為之作證,博士也敬拜他,因為他那奧秘的降生以永遠的喜樂使地與天同得歡欣。這位天上者之君、眾人的統治者,既在肉身的奧秘之下前來,嫉妒的希律便戰兢,不信的猶太便棄絕他。希律因這位有君王之尊的嬰孩而戰慄,因為他不認得這新生者的良善;猶太棄絕它所宣講的基督,因為它為自己的種種不虔懼怕,就躲避那公義審判者的公平;
Let no one therefore doubt, let no one hesitate, that Christ while dwelling on earth was shining in heaven, because he so came to the earth that he did not forsake heaven. And hence it is that the angels praise this virgin-born boy, the shepherds marvel, heaven bears witness, and the magi venerate him, because his mystical nativity gladdened both earth and heaven with everlasting joy. This king of the heavenly ones, then, and ruler of men, coming under the mystery of the flesh, the envious Herod dreads, and unfaithful Judea abjures. Herod trembles at an infant of royal dignity, because he does not know the goodness of the newborn; Judea abjures the Christ whom it proclaims, because, fearing for its own impieties, it flees the equity of the just Judge;
26:6
et scelerum suorum obcæcata tenebris, sola videre non potest quod omnibus splendet e coelo: et cum omnium patriarcharum doctrina, ac prophetica sanctorum virorum eloquia ad agnitionem Filii Dei Judaica corda non flexerint, unius stellae radius fidem gentium suscitavit. Quae tanta permutatio, fratres, quaere ista conversio est? Apud Judæos propheta loquitur, nec auditur; apud gentiles stella tacet, et suadet. Vere sicut scriptum est: Quibus non est nuntiatum de eo videbunt; et qui non audierunt, intelligent (Isai LII; Rom. xv). Ecce enim Chaldæi, quibus nihil unquam fuerat de hujusmodi mysteriis praedicatum d intellexerunt nativitatem Christi;
它被自己罪行的黑暗弄瞎,唯獨它看不見那從天上向眾人照耀的;縱然眾先祖的教訓、眾聖者先知的言語都未能使猶太的心轉向認識神的兒子,一顆星的光芒卻喚起了外邦人的信德。弟兄們,這是何等大的變化,何等的歸正?在猶太人中,先知說話卻無人聽;在外邦人中,星辰緘默卻能勸服。正如經上所記:「未曾傳給他們關於他之事的,將要看見;未曾聽見的,將要明白」(以賽亞書五十二章;羅馬書十五章)。看哪,加色丁人,從未有人向他們預言過這類奧秘,卻明白了基督的降生;
and blinded by the darkness of its own crimes, it alone cannot see what shines forth from heaven upon all: and whereas the teaching of all the patriarchs and the prophetic utterances of holy men did not bend the Jewish hearts to the recognition of the Son of God, the ray of a single star awakened the faith of the Gentiles. What so great a change is this, brethren, what a conversion? Among the Jews the prophet speaks, and is not heard; among the Gentiles the star is silent, and persuades. Truly, as it is written: 'They to whom it was not announced concerning him shall see; and they that have not heard shall understand' (Isa. 52; Rom. 15). For behold the Chaldeans, to whom nothing had ever been foretold about mysteries of this kind, understood the nativity of Christ;
26:7
ipsumque Christum sollicite e pepquirentes, coelo i monstratæ stellae ducatu, invenire meruerunt.
and diligently seeking Christ himself, under the guidance of the star shown from heaven, they merited to find him. Nor indeed were these things either understood or seen by any base, obscure, and abject men, but by the Chaldeans — that is, among whom the error of superstitions reigned. Among these Christ, entering the world, found the firstfruits of his saving work: and there arose between the Jews and the Gentiles a certain contest of faithlessness and faith. For at the birth of Christ, Chaldea exulted, and all Jerusalem with its princes was tormented. The Jew persecuted, the magus adored; and Herod was whetting the sword, the Chaldean was preparing gifts.
26:8
But what wonder if that Jewish throng did not receive the infancy of Christ, which even contemptuously abused and despised him as he raised the dead? What wonder if the Jews spurned Christ lying in the cradle, when — though he gave new light to the blind, or restored the light they had lost, and healed diverse infirmities with his saving word — ungrateful to all the benefits of the redeeming Lord, they accused him with the slanders of a lying tongue? What wonder if at his nativity they neglected the tokens of the shining star, they who at his passion, even as the sun mourned, rejoiced? What wonder if, when the Chaldeans arrived, these refused to believe, whom not even the concourse of angels could lead to the faith of the truth?
26:9
Let us therefore rejoice, brethren, and exult in the Lord, celebrating with all joy the festival of the everlasting mystery — we who do not deny the Lord's nativity by carnal conjectures, but confess it with simple faith; we who came to know the Savior's coming not from announcing magi, but from the Father bearing witness from above; we who no longer seek Christ the Lord wailing among the swaddling clothes, but venerate him reigning in heaven, Jesus Christ the Lord.
