206:1
Among the same Martène and Durand, in the place indicated in the preceding notice, this sermon too and the one that follows are read inscribed to St. Maximus. Some days ago we set forth that there lies upon us the necessity of not keeping silent, and lest others be imperiled by our peril, we observed that we ought to rise up with a cry to preach. For we must cry out in the Church, lest we cry out in punishment. For thus says the Lord through the prophet: Cry aloud vehemently, spare not, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare to my people their sins (Isa. 58). We are commanded therefore to cry out, and to cry out vehemently, and not to spare our voice, lest we perish as to salvation:
206:2
Ne parcas, inquit, boc est peccatoris iniquitatem nec tacendo prætereas, ne dum verecundiæ ejus consulis, non consulas sanitati. Vulnera enim itlius, quae clamando resecare debueras, in pejus, tacendo, nutristi. Clamare ergo jubemur, et ne quis se non audisse dicat, aut quemquam vox lateat, sacerdotes vehementer clamare præcipiuntur; ac, ne hoc minime fortasse sufGceret, addidit, dicens: sicut tuba exalta vocem tuam (Isai. LVIII). Scimus quia tuba non tam sonet auditui quam terrori, nec tam delectationem deferre quam inferre formidinem. Tuba enim peccatoribus necessaria est, quæ non solum aures eorum penetret, sed et corda concutiat, quæ non delectet cantu, sed castiget auditu;
經上說:不可止住;這就是說,不要因緘默而放過罪人的罪孽,免得你顧惜他的羞恥,卻不顧惜他的康健。因為他那些傷口,你本當藉呼喊把它們割除,你卻因緘默而縱容它們惡化。因此我們奉命呼喊;並且免得有人說他沒有聽見,或免得聲音躲過任何人,祭司就奉命極力呼喊;再者,惟恐這或許仍嫌不足,祂又加上說:揚起聲來好像吹角(以賽亞書五十八章)。我們知道,號角與其說是為了悅耳,不如說是為了使人畏懼;與其說是帶來愉悅,不如說是激起恐懼。因為號角對罪人是必需的,它不僅要穿透他們的耳朵,更要震動他們的心;它不當以歌聲取悅,而當以所聞責懲;
Spare not, it says; that is, do not by keeping silence pass over the sinner's iniquity, lest, while you have regard for his shame, you fail to have regard for his health. For his wounds, which by crying out you ought to have cut away, you have by keeping silence nourished for the worse. We are commanded therefore to cry out; and lest anyone should say he did not hear, or lest the voice escape anyone, the priests are commanded to cry out vehemently; and, lest perhaps this might by no means suffice, he added, saying: lift up your voice like a trumpet (Isa. 58). We know that the trumpet does not so much sound for hearing as for terror, nor so much bring delight as strike in dread. For the trumpet is necessary for sinners, which should not only penetrate their ears but also shake their hearts, which should not delight by song but chasten by the hearing;
206:3
strenuos quoque hortetur ad justitiam, ignavos deterreat a delictis.
and let it exhort the vigorous to justice and deter the sluggish from offenses. For as in battle it casts down the mind of the fearful soldier and kindles the spirit of the brave man, so also the priestly trumpet humbles the mind of the sinner and strengthens the soul of the holy man, and by one and the same sound imposes exhortation on the one, how he may be stronger toward unity, and strikes fear into the other, how he may be more timid toward sin. For this is the nature of the trumpet, that it destroys the works of the offenders and confirms the deeds of these. Finally, the walls of Jericho fell by the priestly trumpets, because they held within themselves a sinful people. No battering-ram struck them, no siege-engine took them; but, what is wonderful, the priestly dread of the sound overthrew them.
206:4
Muri qui adversus ferrum inexpugnabiles steterant, sacra tubarum voce collapsi sunt. Quis enim non stupeat in illo iacto saxa dirupta, fundamenta clangore esse quassata, et ita universa collapsa, ut cum victores nihil manus læderent, apud adversarium nihil tamen stabile remaneret; sed quamvis iI.. los muros nemo contingeret, expugnantur tamen: forinsecus sonitu justorum, forinsecus habitacula peccatorum propterea cesserunt. Ergo istisne obsisterent? illosne in aliquo tuerentur? Aperuerunt justis jam defensionem, perfidis denegafunt. Igitur, fratres, sacerdotalis vocis sonus jam illo in tempore tantum potuit, quo in vera status confusione nescio quid personavit;
那些抵擋鐵器堅立不摧的城牆,卻在號角的神聖之聲前崩塌了。誰能不為之驚愕呢——那一聲吹響之下,磐石被裂開,根基因號聲被震動,如此萬物盡皆傾覆,以致征服者的手雖未傷損分毫,敵方卻無一物屹立不倒;那些城牆雖無人觸碰,卻仍被攻取:義人的聲音從外而來,罪人的居所因此從外傾塌。那麼,這些城牆難道要抵擋這聲音嗎?難道要在任何事上護庇那些人嗎?它們反倒為義人開了防衛,卻向背信之人拒絕了防衛。因此,弟兄們,祭司之聲的音響在那時尚且如此有力,當它在他們處境真正的混亂中發出某種不知名之聲時;
The walls which had stood impregnable against iron collapsed at the sacred voice of the trumpets. For who would not be astonished that at that blast the rocks were rent, the foundations shaken by the clangor, and thus everything overthrown, so that, while the victors' hands harmed nothing, yet nothing remained standing among the adversaries; but although no one touched those walls, they were nevertheless taken: by the sound of the just from without, from without the dwellings of sinners for this reason gave way. Should they then have withstood these? Should they have protected those in anything? They opened a defense to the just already, and denied it to the faithless. Therefore, brethren, the sound of the priestly voice availed so much even in that time, when in true confusion of their state it sounded forth I know not what;
206:5
how much more do we believe that the priestly living voice itself can now avail, which, while it speaks Christ by the word, accomplishes something magnificent in the stead of the command of the Lord Saviour, when even the elements gave way at the sound of bronze, or how could things sensible have withstood, when even things insensible could not bear the sacred terror! For we believe that hearts can be softened more easily by the words of priests than stones, and that sins can be loosed more quickly than the mortar was loosed. For the voice of the concurring Spirit destroys the stain of sin more easily than the material bulwark of stone is loosed. Here it ends.
