100:1
CAP.
Chapter I. — I ought not to say that it was my earnest desire, after the synod, to come to Constantinople: since there was a manifest necessity which compelled me to present the letters of the most blessed pope, addressed to your Clemency, so that I might discharge to both your Piety and to the most invincible and most Christian prince the duty of veneration which I owed. But to this fitting purpose of mine there befell that hindrance which is the enemy of all good men, and over which the affection of Christians groans — that is, the Alexandrian bishop, most powerful in the condemnation of blameless men. For after I could not communicate with his unjust will and sentence, he attempted by terrors and snares to summon me to another council:
100:2
CAP. II. — Verumtamen confidens de auxilio Christi nostri Dei,a damnatione reverendissimi et sanctissimi viri innocentem me integrumque servavi; licet nulla flagella, nulla tormenta me possent facere ejus consentire sententiae; sed omnibusderelictis" exinde discessi, per incognita etinvialoca Romam veniens et reverendissimo papae, omnium que in Epheso gesta sunt idoneus nuntiator existens.
in order that he might either — which God forbid — by seductions make me consent to condemning the most holy bishop Flavian, or, if I resisted, might detain me, so that I should have no liberty either to hasten to your Piety at Constantinople or to return to the Roman Church. Chapter II. — Nevertheless, trusting in the help of Christ our God, I kept myself innocent and whole from the condemnation of that most reverend and most holy man; nor could any scourgings, no torments, make me consent to his sentence; but, forsaking all things, I departed thence, coming to Rome through unknown and pathless places, and proving a fit reporter of all the things that were done at Ephesus to the most reverend pope.
100:3
Therefore let your venerable Clemency know that, by the aforesaid pope together with the whole Western council, there have been reproved all the things which were done at Ephesus against the canons, amid tumult and worldly hatreds, by Bishop Dioscorus, and that by no reasoning can those things be received in these parts which were committed through the power of the said man, not without wounding of the faith and prejudice to a most holy and innocent man. But the things which were announced by me with constant and strong authority on behalf of the faith I think it superfluous to relate: for you will be able to learn these from the letters of the most blessed pope.
100:4
Unde, domina spiendidissima, 930 atque clementissima Augusta, adoranda vestra pietas in quibus libenter fecitinitium, relinquere non debet, sed haec zelo religioso fidei constanti voluntate servare.
Whence, O most splendid and most clement lady Augusta, your adorable Piety ought not to leave off those things in which it gladly made a beginning, but with religious zeal and steadfast will to preserve them for the faith.
