158:1
Dilectissimis fratribus universis episcopis catholicis per.Gallias et Hispanias constitutis, LEO Romæ Cum in omnibus divinorum praeceptorum regulis exsequendis sacerdotalem observantiam oporteat exse concordem, maxime nobis et principaliter providendum est, 1284 ne in paschalis festi die, vel ignorantia, vel præsumptio peccatum diversitatis incurrat. Unde quia tempus sacratissimæ solemnitatis ita dispositos habet limites suos, ut salutare sacramenlum nunc citius, nunc tardius oporteat celebrari, non desinit apostolicæ sedis sollicitudo prospicere ne devotio ecclesiastica aliquo turbetur incerto.
To all the most beloved brethren, the catholic bishops established throughout Gaul and Spain, Leo of Rome. Since in carrying out all the rules of the divine precepts the priestly observance ought to be in concord, it is especially and principally to be provided for by us that on the day of the Paschal feast neither ignorance nor presumption should incur the sin of diversity. Wherefore, since the time of the most sacred solemnity has its boundaries so disposed that the saving sacrament must be celebrated now earlier, now later, the solicitude of the Apostolic See does not cease to take heed lest ecclesiastical devotion be disturbed by any uncertainty.
158:2
Cum autem in quibusdam ascriptionibus Patrum futurum proxime Pascha Domini ab aliis in diem xv kalendarum Maiarum, ab aliis in diem vin kalendarum earumdem inveniretur ascriptum, tantum me diversitas ista permovit, ut clementissimo principi Marciano curam de hac re animi mei panderem, ut praecipiente ipso ab his qui habenthujusaupputationis pcritianl, diligentius illic discussa ratione quaereretur quo die posset veneranda solemnitas rectius celebrari. Quo rescribente, octavo kalendasMaias definitus est dies.
But since in certain inscriptions of the Fathers the coming Passover of the Lord was found inscribed by some on the fifteenth day before the Kalends of May, by others on the eighth day before the same Kalends, this diversity so disturbed me that I disclosed the anxiety of my mind concerning this matter to the most clement prince Marcian, so that at his command the reckoning might be more diligently examined there by those who have the skill of this computation, and inquiry made on what day the venerable solemnity might more rightly be celebrated. And upon his writing back, the eighth day before the Kalends of May was fixed as the day.
158:3
Since therefore, out of zeal for unity and peace, I have preferred to acquiesce in the determination of the Easterns rather than to differ in the observance of so great a festival, let your Fraternity know that on the eighth day before the Kalends of May the Lord's resurrection is to be celebrated by all, and that this very thing is to be made known through you to the other brethren: so that, by the fellowship of divine peace, just as we are joined in one faith, so we may keep feast in one solemnity. May God keep you unharmed, most beloved brethren. Given after the consulship of Opilio, on the fifth day before the Kalends of August. Valentinian for the eighth time and Anthemius being consuls. Easter, the eighth day before the Kalends of May.
