160:1
CAP. CAP. II.
CHAP. I. — Through my son Gerontius I have received the letter of your Fraternity, in which with your accustomed devotion you signify those things which you rightly esteem to pertain to our care for the cause of the faith: namely, that Carosus has been corrected in the confession of the faith; but that he so persists, in some rivalry I know not what, against brother Anatolius, that on account of the discord with him he even now withdraws from communion. But that John, a distinguished man and praiseworthy in sincerity of faith, was directed to Egypt for the cause of the faith; how much he shall have profited peace and amendment, make me know as soon as he shall have returned, which I doubt not you will do even without my admonition. CHAP. II.
160:2
— But concerning the state of the bishop of Antioch I am saddened with much grief of mind, if — which God forbid — true things are brought forth against him by his accusers. But besides the priestly diligence, which I do not doubt will have care for the common benefit, the greatest confidence is given me from the justice and benevolence of the most glorious prince, by which I am certain that provision will be made, as far as can be done, lest deceit be able to prevail in any part. But to what end this cause shall have come, when it shall be opportune, you will deign to indicate. Given on the fifth day before the Ides of March, Valentinian Augustus being consul for the eighth time.
