194:1
Eusebius of Caesarea first described the manner in which Manes acted in publishing abroad the errors of his heresy, saying in a few words (bk. VII of the Ecclesiastical History, ch. 27): 'Puffed up in madness (he says), choosing twelve disciples after the likeness of Christ, he used to send them out to preach.' All the ancient writers agree with Eusebius, if we except one. The more recent writers also support him, among whom Beausobre, as we shall observe in its proper place. Wherefore I judge that Father Natalis Alexander—a most learned man, indeed, in other respects—is by no means to be heeded, who, discoursing on the number of the disciples of Manes, led by I know not what hallucination, from Augustine's opinion extends that number to twenty-two. Meanwhile (he writes, Ecclesiastical History, cent. 3, art.
194:2
9) mulros discipulos in suum perirohens errorrem, VIGINTI duos selegit nefariorum suorum dogmatum impiarumque fabularum prædicatores, in quibus ires præ cæteris insignes esse voluit, THOMAM, HERMAM, et ADDAM. hunc, inquam, minime audiendum arbitror. Nam qua ratione Manes in suis instituendis discipulis Christum Dominum imitari studuisset, si alios præter duodecim pseudoapostolos elegisset ? falsum præterea est, p. Natalis opinionelm Augustinum suffragatoreeem habere. Augustinus quippe, mire Eusebio concinens, duodenarium dumtaxat manestisdiscipulorum numerum definivit.
9): 'Drawing many disciples into his error, he selected twenty-two heralds of his wicked dogmas and impious fables, among whom he wished three to be conspicuous above the rest: THOMAS, HERMAS, and ADDAS.' This man, I say, I judge is by no means to be heeded. For by what reasoning would Manes, in instituting his disciples, have striven to imitate Christ the Lord, if he had chosen others besides the twelve pseudo-apostles? It is moreover false that Father Natalis's opinion has Augustine as a supporter. For Augustine, marvelously agreeing with Eusebius, defined the number of Manes's disciples as merely twelve. Nay, the other ancient writers also followed this opinion, if we except only Epiphanius.
194:3
And indeed Augustine could not have written more clearly or more expressly to our purpose, writing thus (in the book On Heresies, ch. 46): 'Whence in his letters he calls himself an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the reason that Jesus Christ had promised that He would send him, and had sent the Holy Spirit in him. On account of which Manichaeus himself also had twelve disciples, after the likeness of the apostolic number—a number which the Manichaeans keep to this day.' Nor did Theodoret use other phrases, when discoursing on the fables of the heretics, since in these few words he described the choosing of disciples made by Manes and his imitation of that pseudo-Christ (bk. I of the Heretical Fables, ch. 16):
194:4
Hic, duodecim discipulis ad Domini exemplum designatis, in Mesopotamiam profectus est. Quid plura ? Constans sequentium sex sæculorum traditio veritatem de qua agimus probavit.Nal Photius discipulorum Manetis numerum horumque missionem paucis designavit dicens: Exinde vero discipulos congregavit duodecim, quos etiam erroris præcones enusit. Petrus Siculus quoque, qui paulo post floruit,de Manichacis rebus et institutis optime instructus, vir doctrina et nobilititate præclarus, variis pro Basilio imperatore legationibus, et ad Armenos potissimum, functus n historiam de ortu,progressu et occasu Manichæorum, scripto consignavit;
「此人依循主的榜樣指定了十二位門徒,便啟程前往美索不達米亞。」還需多言嗎?其後六個世紀始終如一的傳統,已證實了我們所論之事的真相。因為佛提烏(Photius)用寥寥數語指明了摩尼門徒的數目及其使命,他說:「他從那裡聚集了十二位門徒,並差他們作其謬誤的傳報者。」西西里的伯多祿(Peter of Sicily)——他稍後才活躍,對摩尼教的事務與制度極為熟悉,是一位以學識與門第顯赫之人,曾代表皇帝巴西流出使各處、尤其出使亞美尼亞人——也將一部關於摩尼教徒之興起、發展與衰亡的歷史筆之於書;
'This man, having designated twelve disciples after the Lord's example, set out for Mesopotamia.' What more? The constant tradition of the six following centuries has proved the truth of which we treat. For Photius designated in a few words the number of Manes's disciples and their mission, saying: 'From thence indeed he gathered together twelve disciples, whom he also sent out as heralds of his error.' Peter of Sicily also, who flourished a little afterward, excellently instructed in Manichaean matters and institutions, a man illustrious in learning and nobility, having discharged various embassies on behalf of the emperor Basil, and especially to the Armenians, consigned to writing a history concerning the rise, progress, and fall of the Manichaeans;
194:5
in qua singula duodenariorum illo siscipulorum nomina, non tantum recensuit; sed horum gesta, numera, legationes,scripta,interpretationes,et commentaria brevi suo Græco-latino opusculo ad Bulgariæ archiepiscopum expressit. Is scriptor igitur de Manetis discipulis hæc habet.Porro, Discipuli Maneti Antichristo duodeni fuere. Tum eos enumerans, primo loco eum subjicit,qui Maneti, regis Persarum jussu mactato,successit, dicent: Signus qui Maneti successit. Hunc vero alius excipit, cui Thomænomen erat, quique Manichærum conscripsit Evangelium,de quo disserens S. Cyrillus Hierolymitanus, catholicos monuit ne lfegerent, scribens:
in which he not only enumerated the individual names of those twelve disciples, but expressed their deeds, offices, embassies, writings, interpretations, and commentaries in his brief Greco-Latin little work addressed to the archbishop of Bulgaria. This writer, therefore, has the following concerning the disciples of Manes: 'Now, the disciples of Manes the Antichrist were twelve.' Then, enumerating them, in the first place he subjoins him who succeeded Manes when Manes had been put to death by order of the king of the Persians, saying: 'Sisinnius, who succeeded Manes.' But another follows this man, whose name was Thomas, and who composed the Gospel of the Manichaeans, concerning which St. Cyril of Jerusalem, discoursing, warned Catholics not to read it, writing:
194:6
Nemo legal secundum Thomam Evangelium.
'Let no one read the Gospel according to Thomas. For he is not one of the twelve apostles, but one of the three disciples of Manes.' Which spurious work, indeed, it was forbidden to all Catholics to read or to keep in their possession, under the penalty of anathema by the sanctions of the Apostolic See, as we shall see in its proper place. To these two he added both Buddas and Hermas, Addas and Adimantus—the last of whom, as more iniquitous and audacious than all the rest, Manes had sent as his herald into diverse parts of the world, and had dispatched as it were a forerunner of his faith. Three others then—Hierax, namely, Heraclides, and Aphthonius—he had appointed as interpreters and expounders of his doctrine and preaching.
194:7
To whom at last he joined three more: Agapius, who devised the Heptalogue, Zarvas, and Gabriabus. These things, then, concerning the wicked as well as superstitious first Hierarchy of the Manichaeans, Peter of Sicily recounted. Who, although he flourished long after the times of Manes, nevertheless elaborated that work both from the ancient and constant tradition of the Greeks and Armenians, and from most certain documents, as we shall see in its proper place. Since therefore a matter of this kind is corroborated by so many and so great testimonies, I do not think that Epiphanius was so gravely deluded, though I know not on what foundation or testimony he relied when he expressly affirmed concerning the Manichaean (Heresy 66, no. 3):
194:8
Jam enim suamn ut ita dicam, manum circumaror collegerat,quos discipulos nominabat duos et virginti. Sed existimo mendum potius in amanuenses, aut in in- terpretes, quam in ipsum Epuphanium esse rejiciendum. Vel eumdem,non ad priman Man chaicæ sectæ hierachiam, hujusque formam et numerum. sed ad posteriorem, quæ auctau existit, et de qua alibi Augustinus I cutus est, alludere voluisse. Sed P. natalis Alexandri turpior allucinatio censenda est;
「因為此時他已將自己的隊伍——可以這麼說——聚攏在身邊,他稱這些人為門徒,共二十二人。」但我認為,這錯誤毋寧應歸咎於抄寫者、或譯者,而非厄丕法尼烏斯本人。又或者他是想影射摩尼教派並非最初的、而是後來的那個階層體系——那體系乃是經過擴充才形成的,奧斯定曾在別處論及它。然而,更為可恥的蒙蔽,則應算是納塔利斯·亞歷山大神父的那一種;
'For now he had gathered his band, so to speak, about him, whom he named disciples, twenty-two.' But I judge that the fault is rather to be cast upon the copyists, or upon the translators, than upon Epiphanius himself. Or that he wished to allude, not to the first hierarchy of the Manichaean sect, and its form and number, but to the later one, which came into being augmented, and of which Augustine spoke elsewhere. But the more shameful delusion is to be reckoned that of Father Natalis Alexander;
194:9
He, treating of the errors of the Manichaeans, when he had surveyed the works of Augustine, by no means noticed that that opinion concerning the more than twenty-two disciples of Manes wavers greatly and is altogether precarious; or at least, in order to clear himself of this reproach, it would have been his task to bring forward into the open the weight of both opinions, so that from these the reader might choose the firmer and more probable one. But perhaps the learned man, distracted by the abundance of matters and questions, devoted himself to that opinion which had first presented itself to him, in the persuasion that Epiphanius, the most copious writer on the Manichaean sect, was led by no error. These things it behooved us to note, that we might guard against the mark of carelessness.
194:10
Interim maxime mirari juvat quod Beausobre, nodum in scirpo sempar quærere assuetus,ut studiose autiquorum PP. dejiciat traditionem, horum semper apparentes contradictionnes notando, atque ampliores faciendo, minime animadverterit aut Epiphanium a cæteris scriptoribus in tanti momnti re dissidere, aut P.Natalem Alexandrum, in assignandis duodeviginti Manetis discipulis,perperam ad Augustini testimonioum provocasse. Is ergo commu- niori subscribens persuasioni, duodenos fuisse hujus hæretici discipulos supponit et affirmat.
Meanwhile it is most delightful to marvel that Beausobre, ever accustomed to seek a knot in a bulrush, so as studiously to overthrow the tradition of the ancient Fathers by always noting their apparent contradictions and magnifying them, has by no means observed either that Epiphanius differs from the other writers in a matter of such moment, or that Father Natalis Alexander, in assigning the eighteen disciples of Manes, wrongly appealed to the testimony of Augustine. He therefore, subscribing to the more common persuasion, supposes and affirms that this heretic had twelve disciples. Among these, three as the more renowned heralds, who first discharged the Manichaean embassy and were more wicked than the rest, chapter 7 of the earlier book has not obscurely related.
194:11
ibi enim Manichæi res, quæ ipsi post viduæ mortem contigereunt,cujusque hæreditatem assecutus fuerat descrivbere aggrediens, urbem Seleuciam seu Ctesiphontem qual Arabes Modain, sive, ut auctor est Assemanus urbem Citez appellant, in qua primo nutritus,et in variarum scientiarum studiis fuerat intitutus,et deseruisse arbitratur; atque demum se recepisse in Huzilide,quæ una est ex provinciiss Irak babyloniorum. Hanc probat conjecturam, Archelai Actis insistens, in quibus hæreticum in regali urbe Persarum educatum fuissse ait, in qua scientiarum et magiæ schola maxime florescevat.
For there, undertaking to describe the affairs of Manichaeus which befell him after the widow's death, whose inheritance he had obtained, he thinks that Manes deserted the city of Seleucia, or Ctesiphon, which the Arabs call Modain, or, as Assemanus is the author, the city of Citez, in which he had first been reared and instructed in the studies of various sciences; and that at length he withdrew into Huzilis, which is one of the provinces of the Babylonian Iraq. He proves this conjecture by relying on the Acts of Archelaus, in which he says the heretic was educated in the royal city of the Persians, in which a school of the sciences and of magic flourished most greatly. The Greeks (he adds) said almost no word about the life of Manes from the twelfth year of his age to the sixtieth.
194:12
Diutius tamen his immorabor, ne vitio detur.
Indeed he observes that this last note is variously reported in the copies of that disputation held with Archelaus, on which matter he reserves to himself to set forth a discussion, being about to speak of the time at which the holy bishop had his conference at Caschara. Therefore, lest we should seem to wander beyond the bounds of our proposed undertaking, out of that twelvefold number of disciples, as we were saying, he makes mention of three more excellent than the rest: namely Thomas, Addas, and Hermas; and he notes that Cyril of Jerusalem, in place of Addas, set down Budda, as may also be seen among those authors who described the names of the individual twelve of those disciples, who in the second place set down not Addas but Budda. Yet I shall linger longer over these matters, lest it be reckoned a fault.
194:13
Et quamvis acathilius scriptor alia et aba subjiciat, quæ ad trium horum discipulorum missionem pertinent, tamen, ne propositas nobis leges præter re videamus, de horum missionibus atque muneribus alibi sermonem aggrediemur, interim de nece filii regis Persarum a Manete patrata locuturi. Post duodecim discipulorum delectum, horumque in diversas Orientis provincias missionem,ad stultam sacrilegamque hanc scelam propagandam, Manes ipse, majoris sibi comparandæ famæ cupidus, atque ad singularem quamdam divinamque potentiam supra cæleros hymines ostentandam, præter naturam aliquod efficere animo revolvebat.
And although a most accurate writer might subjoin sundry other things which pertain to the mission of these three disciples, nevertheless, lest we seem to go beyond the laws set before us, we shall undertake elsewhere a discussion of their missions and offices; being now about to speak of the killing of the son of the king of the Persians, perpetrated by Manes. After the choosing of the twelve disciples and their mission into the various provinces of the East to propagate this foolish and sacrilegious sect, Manes himself, desirous of procuring for himself greater fame, and of displaying a certain singular and divine power above other men, revolved in his mind to accomplish something beyond nature.
194:14
Rem autem prospere et fauste sibi eventuram arbitrabatur, cum ex sparso rumore Persarum regis filium gravi ægritudine correptum audivit, eumque in regia urbe qua Manes tum aberat) decumbere. Persarum porro reges. aut Seleuciam, aut Ctesiphontem inhabitare consuevisse, præcedenti cap. jam vidimus; ambasque urbes prope fluvium Tigrim positas esse, notat Tillemontius (Tom. IV de Manichæorum hæresi, art. 7).
Moreover he judged that the matter would turn out prosperously and happily for him, when he heard from a spreading rumor that the son of the king of the Persians had been seized by a grave illness, and that he lay sick in the royal city (from which Manes was then absent). Now that the kings of the Persians were wont to dwell either at Seleucia or Ctesiphon we have already seen in the preceding chapter; and that both cities are situated near the river Tigris, Tillemont notes (Vol. IV on the Manichaean heresy, art. 7).
194:15
Manes ergo, auctore Epiphanio, quamvis a regia aula dissitus, ad eam convolare non distulit, et librorum præsidio confisus quos Terebinthus a Scythiano, et ipse a vidua Terebinthi, seu Buddæ, hærede acceperat, remedium aliquod nancisci posse confidit, quo statim regii pueri ægritudini, cum totius Persarum regni admiratione et plausu occurreret. At quorsum ibi pervenit ( ait Epiphanius ) suam aperiens voluntatem, certam filio regis opem promittit.
Manes therefore, according to Epiphanius, although far from the royal court, did not delay to hasten to it; and, relying on the aid of the books which Terebinthus had received from Scythianus, and he himself from the widow, the heir of Terebinthus, or Budda, he trusted that he could obtain some remedy by which he might at once meet the illness of the royal boy, to the admiration and applause of the whole Persian kingdom. But when he had arrived there (says Epiphanius), disclosing his intention, he promised sure help to the king's son. But his hope deceived him for the future. For when he had applied certain medicines to the sick lad, he was so frustrated in his expectation that at last the youth died between his very hands, whereby his vain and lying promises were confuted. Thus far Epiphanius.
194:16
1. Hanc rem paulo aliter Socrates descripsit (Hist. lib. 1, cap. 22 ), narrans, non sponte et audacter Manichæum ad autam convolasse, ut ægroto mederetur, sedipsum Persarum regem, qui pro salme filii omnem lapidem movebat, Manichæi fama motus, atque ratus vera esse hominis prodigia, eum tamquam apostolum accersit, sperans scilicet fore ut silius ejus opera sanaretur. An igitur ante tale periculum Manes aliquod humanas excedens vires præstigiarum subsidio moliri tentaverit. ut ejus virtutis fama ad ipsum regem pervenera, plane ignoramus. Incertum itidem est an pessimus præstigiator ægro tum puero medicamen- tum vere aliquod adhibuerit vel adhibere simulaverit;
一、此事蘇格拉底的描述略有不同(教會史,第一卷第二十二章),他敘述說:那摩尼教徒並非自願且大膽地趕往王廷去醫治病人,而是波斯王本人——他為兒子的性命不惜想盡一切辦法——受了這摩尼教徒名聲的驅動,並認定此人的奇事為真,便召他前來如同召一位使徒,自然是指望自己的兒子能藉他的作為得醫治。因此,摩尼是否在這樣的危難之前,曾試圖藉詭術謀劃某件超乎人力之事,以致他能力的名聲傳到了王本人耳中,我們實在無從得知。同樣不能確定的是:那最邪惡的騙術師是否真的給病重的男孩施用了某種藥物,還是佯裝施用;
1. This matter Socrates described somewhat otherwise (History, book 1, chapter 22), relating that the Manichaean did not of his own accord and boldly hasten to the court to heal the sick one, but that the king of the Persians himself, who was moving every stone for the safety of his son, moved by the fame of the Manichaean and reckoning the man's prodigies to be true, summoned him as an apostle, hoping of course that his son would be healed by his work. Whether therefore, before such a peril, Manes had attempted to contrive by the aid of tricks something exceeding human powers, so that the fame of his virtue reached the king himself, we plainly do not know. It is likewise uncertain whether that most wicked juggler truly applied some medicine to the sick boy or feigned to apply it;
194:17
an potius solius magicæ artis subsidio fuerit usus.
or rather whether he used the aid of the magic art alone. This latter we judge more probable, relying on the testimony of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, who wrote (Catechesis 6): Manes, to vaunt the power of his integrity and virtue, promised through prayer, as a pious man, that he would cure him. Nor did Photius relate this matter otherwise. Indeed, following the writings of the ancients, which he himself had collected and had set before his own eyes, he not only agrees with Epiphanius, Socrates, and Cyril of Jerusalem; but, having briefly explained the mission of those twelve disciples, whom he had taken to himself as heralds of his impious doctrine and associates in all crimes, he immediately subjoins:
194:18
But that raging Manes, when he had become notorious by his crime, the report as a messenger reached even to the ears of the king of the Persians. He, since he had a son laboring under disease, and heard that Manes had promised that he would snatch his son from the disease by prayers, applied the arrogant man to the cure of his son, and cast out the physicians then present, although they promised that the cure of the illness would be easy. He had scarcely completed his prayer, and snatched away the life of him who perhaps would not have suffered this had he not promised him soundness.
194:19
Beausobre therefore alone, following certain insipid and fictitious rules of his own criticism, harasses Archelaus, Cyril, and Epiphanius, both because they did not fear to relate falsehoods, and because Cyril himself in his Commentaries wishes to attribute to this heretic the appearance of a slanderer or of madness; and also because Photius described a deed of this kind adorned with too much exaggeration. Of this last he especially complains, that he had said: But that raging Manes, when he had become notorious by his crime; by which words and the rest, when he understood himself to be censured, he burst forth into these words: When, pray, do princes flatter themselves (he says) that they will obtain miracles of healing by the assistance of criminals? At length the more recent writers (he subjoins, and P.
194:20
He intends especially to sting Natalis Alexander), that they wrongly suppose the heretic to have trusted in magic arts and tricks, and therefore to have undertaken the cure of the king's son. But that these have fallen into a base contradiction he pretends, being led by this persuasion, that since they rely on the Acts of Archelaus, who, about to prove that the heretic of whom we treat was by no means the Paraclete promised in the Scriptures, said: This man showing not even any sign or prodigy. Wherefore the holy bishop, greatly pressing Manes upon this article, reasons thus:
194:21
The Paraclete promised by Christ Jesus ought to have glorified the Lord with an infinite multitude of miracles, and yet the Manichaean, in the whole course of his life and appearance, produced not even the least portent. But who does not see that Beausobre wished as it were to play upon the stage, and to weave rather a fable than a critical history? Concerning this matter, since it does not behoove me at present to hold a long disputation, I would tear away these fictitious fallacies by that great distinction which has been assigned, which the greatest men have taught to intervene between tricks and miracles, and which natural reason itself ought to persuade. Archelaus indeed denies, and rightly, that Manes performed any of those signs which derive from divine power and might alone.
194:22
At non negat hominem maleficiis atque præstigiis, in quibus magorum artes versantur, operam dare fuisse assuetum. Maxime cum, auctore eodem Beausobre, in magiæ institutis, apud Seleuciam aut Clesiphontem, fuerit primo educatus. Igitur negavit Archelaus potuisse Manetem vera miracula patrare, quia Deus non erat cum ea. Ea miracula videlicet quæ Paracleti seu Spiritus sancti propria sunt, a quo longissime distare intelligimus quotquot veneficiorum præstigias exercere consuescunt. Unde ergo inferre potuit Beausobre, Natalem, Tillemontium, recentiores scriptores, re- cessisse ab Archelai testimonio, cui fidem præstare debuissent ?
But he does not deny that the man was accustomed to devote his effort to sorceries and tricks, in which the arts of the magicians are engaged. Especially since, according to the same Beausobre, he had first been educated in the schools of magic at Seleucia or Ctesiphon. Archelaus therefore denied that Manes could work true miracles, because God was not with him. Those miracles, namely, which are proper to the Paraclete or the Holy Spirit, from which we understand all those to be very far removed who are wont to practice the tricks of poisonings. Whence therefore could Beausobre infer that Natalis, Tillemont, and the more recent writers had departed from the testimony of Archelaus, to which they ought to have given credence?
194:23
He ought rather to have inferred that he himself either was altogether ignorant of the rules of dialectic, or had wished to abuse them, in order to deceive incautious readers, who, in surveying his trifling arguments, without considering with themselves that the suppositions of the matter are varied, would not shudder to confound the true miracles of divine omnipotence with the demonic incantations and tricks of the magicians. From which our reader gathers that the more recent Catholic writers have by no means opposed the sayings of the ancients, but have wished to adhere to them more solidly. For Manes truly could work no miracle; although he strove by deceits to delude the minds, eyes, and opinions of others, among whom he had already become notorious.
194:24
In which sense, unless one is out of his mind, one ought to understand the testimony of Photius, by which he affirmed: Manes, when he had become notorious by his crime, etc. Notorious indeed in crime and in wickedness he must be called, who, to overthrow the truth of the Catholic religion, feigns that an apostolate was given to him by Jesus Christ; who names himself the Paraclete; who had already sent false heralds hither and thither into various parts of the world to disseminate a false religion; whose fame more than sufficiently must have been divulged not only among rude and plebeian men, but also among magistrates, nobles, and princes.
194:25
Quis ergo sibi suadere poterit ejus nomen, ejusque facinora et auctoritatem, potestatemque, quam falso sibi vindicaverat, Persarum regem latuisse ? qui deinde speciosis hisce muneribus allectus et ratus, spe sanitatis filio restituendæ, aut Manem hac de causa in aulam regiam accire voluit; aut Manes ipse illuc se transferre statuit, sperans ope et dæmonis præsidio regio puero in lectulo ægro- tanti medelam adhibere. Quare minime attendenda est illa Beausobriana exclamatio, videlicet, Quandonam principes sceleratos sibi posse opitulari sperarunt ?
Who therefore could persuade himself that his name, and his misdeeds and the authority and power which he had falsely claimed for himself, lay hidden from the king of the Persians? who then, allured by these specious offerings and reckoning, in hope of soundness to be restored to his son, either wished for this cause to summon Manes into the royal court, or Manes himself resolved to betake himself thither, hoping by the aid and protection of the demon to apply a remedy to the royal boy lying sick in his little bed. Wherefore that exclamation of Beausobre is by no means to be heeded, namely: When, pray, have princes hoped that criminals could aid them?
194:26
Etenim, quamvis id verum sit, quando scelestissimi homines, nullum pietatis et religionis tegumentum adhibentes, improbam eorum vitam omnibus patefaciunt, vel quando hæc ex certissimis signis innotescunt; tamen si pravi eorum mores adhuc lateant, et studiose sub falsa religionis et pietatis clamide abscondantur, facile ipsi quoque decipi possunt, et quam sæpissime decipiuntur. Quare verba illa Photii non ita violenter detorquenda sunt, ut arbitremur Manem celebrem fuisse in scelere apud regem ejusque aulam;
因為,儘管此話為真——當最邪惡之人不加任何虔敬與宗教的遮掩、把他們邪惡的生活向眾人揭露,或當這些事藉最確鑿的徵兆而為人所知時;然而,倘若他們敗壞的品行仍舊隱藏,並被刻意掩藏在宗教與虔敬的假外衣之下,那麼連君王自己也很容易被欺騙,而且屢屢受騙。因此,福提烏那些話不應被如此強行曲解,以致使我們認為摩尼是在王及其宮廷中以罪惡著稱;
For, although this be true, when most wicked men, using no covering of piety and religion, lay open their wicked life to all, or when these things become known from most certain signs; nevertheless, if their depraved morals still lie hidden and are studiously concealed under the false cloak of religion and piety, they themselves too can easily be deceived, and are very often deceived. Wherefore those words of Photius are not to be so violently distorted, as to make us think that Manes was notorious in crime among the king and his court;
194:27
2. Exagitatis sic igitur primo Græcæ et Latinæ Eccle- siæ vetustissimis PP. recentioribusque scriptoribus, se tædere ait Beausobre, Gregorium Abulpharagium, Syrorum patriarcham Orientalemque scriptorem, in præcedentium opinionem propensum invenisse, quam veluti ex aliorum sententia et rumore mutuatam retulit; cum videlicet, quadam œconomiæ scribendi formula adhibita dixit:
but before God and the Church, which was being overturned by the blasphemies and errors of his heresies, since he had especially already scattered his depraved dogmas among the common people, and had taken care to scatter them more and more from day to day, in order to enlarge for himself the number of hearers and elect. 2. Having thus therefore first harassed the most ancient Fathers of the Greek and Latin Church and the more recent writers, Beausobre says that it wearies him to have found Gregory Abulpharagius, the Syrian patriarch and Eastern writer, inclined to the opinion of the foregoing, which he reported as though borrowed from the judgment and rumor of others; namely when, using a certain formula of economy of writing, he said:
194:28
It is reported that Sapor, king of the Persians, having stripped off the skin of the slain Manes, stuffed it with straw, and fixed it aloft upon the walls of the city on a gibbet, because, while he was proclaiming great things about himself, he was unable to heal from disease his son, which befell him. Beausobre therefore contends that this Gregory clung as though in suspense in giving credence to the preceding narration; and that this is indicated by that word 'it is reported,' which occurs to be read first in that passage.
194:29
Moreover he says that he is struck with astonishment that the cause of such a peril, so public and memorable, was as it were less advisedly recounted by only one of the Orientals, since Bar-Hebraeus alone, that is Abulpharagius, made mention of it—who nevertheless, since he had spoken of it as of an uncertain matter, would perhaps have been altogether ignorant of it, had he not learned it from the Greek writers. But he affirms that he is willing of his own accord to grant the truth of this fact. Yet in his supposition, having applied all the sinews of his zeal, he observes that the matter must be set forth in various different ways.
194:30
Namely that Manes resolved to see to the health of that prince for no other cause than that he was overcome by royal entreaties, with whom the fame of this man greatly prevailed, both on account of his learning in the sciences and on account of the excellence of his virtue. Such an exposition he says he draws from the testimony of Socrates, which we noted for him above. Adding moreover the suffrage of all the Orientals, who asserted that Manes had as it were suddenly gained for himself the confidence of Sapor, whereby he judged that he would be of benefit to himself and to the sick son, on account of his learning. And indeed he undertakes to demonstrate by many conjectures that the heretical man had in himself all the things by which he might gain for himself royal esteem.
194:31
Primo quidem quia communior hominum opinio Manem eximia magnaque sanctitate donatum ferebat.
First indeed because the more common opinion of men reported that Manes was endowed with singular and great sanctity. For continence, abstinence, and fasts, the outward devotion of the body, or piety, which present the appearance of a man supremely spiritual, by which hypocrites are wont to claim for themselves the veneration of peoples, were especially discerned in him; to say nothing afterward of the austerity, sadness, and pallor with which, according to Ephraem, the devil had tinged Manes, that he might deceive the incautious. And indeed if we consider his poverty, it is sufficiently established that the Manichaean pursued it, since he wished his elect subject to that law, that they should possess absolutely nothing.
194:32
Wherefore we are taught by experience that nothing avails more to conciliate to oneself the goodwill and esteem of men than the contempt and renunciation of temporal things themselves, which indeed still preserve their force especially among the Orientals. For from the Treasury of the Persian tongue we know that the gentiles of the Indians glory greatly in an apparent sanctity, if they strive to have voluntary poverty joined to it. He draws another conjecture from this, that Manes, according to Archelaus, could be called the chief of all the wise men of his age, especially in those matters which pertain to the sciences of the Persians, among which medicine especially was held in esteem, since they reckon that nothing pertains more to the necessity of life, as Xenophon noted.
194:33
Wherefore that medicine was the other part of the magi's philosophy these two verses indicate: 'He among the Persians is a magus, who knows the stars, who knows the powers of herbs and the worship of the gods.' Thus indulging in his own studies and party, Beausobre reasons, who has also more confidently heaped up many other things fully repugnant to the tradition of the Fathers, in order to reduce the uncertain testimony of Gregory Abulpharagius, metropolitan of the Monophysites, to a certain fabulous system, which would utterly abolish the truth of this history. 3.
194:34
The things therefore which he there subjoined are ordered to this end, that he may persuade the reader that Manes was thoroughly versed in the disciplines of medicine, and he is led especially by those examples which can be drawn either from Zoroaster the Persian prophet, who in the city of Divavar ordered a certain sick man to be healed by the aid of a fluid pressed from a certain plant, or from Alexander of Lycopolis, who accompanied Sapor the Persian himself, waging wars, in the camp. From which he conjectures that this man was present to the king as a physician. Hence that physicians are held in the greatest honor among the Persians he asserts is confirmed by Saint Ephraem, who, before he departed from the use of the present light, wishing to give a blessing to a certain Simeon, spoke thus:
194:35
'Like a physician in the camp, so may your name pervade the whole world.' Which manner of speaking Beausobre flatters himself has come among the Orientals into a proverb, or common adage, since the faculty of medicine, according to Strabo, is ordered to the preservation of man. To all these he affirms that he can add Scythianus, whom fame reports to have been the master of Manes, to have devoted himself to medical instructions, and Hierax, one of the twelve Manichaean disciples, to have applied his study to this discipline.
194:36
Cujus rei varia nobis suppeditat exempla doctissimus Assemanus in sua Orientalium Bibliotheca.
And finally, as if wishing to close the preceding narration, he subjoins that many men from the assemblies of monks, others from the profession of hermits, others finally from the episcopal order, were so zealously pursued by the Orientals, that we may easily understand them to have come into the patronage and familiarity of the Persian kings, just as the Miscellaneous History, book 15, reports concerning a certain Boazanes, whom Cavades, king of the Persians, greatly loved as an excellent physician. Of which matter the most learned Assemanus supplies us various examples in his Oriental Library.
194:37
His itaque aliisque similibus jactis fundamentis, hanc Beausobre infert consecutionem, quæ alio cuicumque homini persæ, vel apud Persarum regum aulam commoranti convenire posset: nimirum Manem a Sapore in aulam accitum tamquam medicum 46 optimum et nobilissimum, quasi quod apud hominum apinionem ejus maxima in languoribus sanandis experientia constitisset. At ubi legimus, vel quis scriptor asseveravit uniquam, hanc existimationem sibi vindicasse Manem ?
With these therefore and other similar foundations laid, Beausobre infers this consequence, which could suit any other Persian man whatsoever, or one dwelling at the court of the Persian kings: namely that Manes was summoned into the court by Sapor as an excellent and most noble physician, as though because in the opinion of men his greatest experience in healing sicknesses had been established. But where do we read, or what writer ever asserted, that Manes claimed this esteem for himself? We have only this ill-fated experiment of his upon the royal boy, Abulpharagius also being the author, on whom Beausobre relies: and therefore there long since could have been no cause for him to be proclaimed as a most wise physician.
194:38
Qaid ergo ex illa consecatione, nisi alterum, Persarum regum aulam ita medicorum cohorte fuisse comminitam, quemadmodum militum copiæ et classes castra communire solent ? Sed quid inverisimilius ? Saporem quidem inter domesticos et familiares aliquot viros in medicorum arte peritos halmisse, ratio ipsa suadet, quos, ut vidimus, e regio palatio exsulatos abire fecit, cum renuntiatum illi fuit sycophaatam Manem divina quasi virtute pollere in morbis medindis: non quia tali scientia esset præditus, et in medicorum arte vesatus;
那麼從那結論能推出什麼,除了另一個選項,即:波斯諸王的宮廷竟被一隊醫生所把守,正如兵團與艦隊慣於把守營寨一般?然而還有什麼更不可信的呢?沙普爾在其家僕與親信中確有幾位精通醫術之人,這是理性本身所使人確信的——正如我們所見,當有人向他報告說騙子摩尼彷彿憑神聖的能力在醫病一事上勝過眾人時,他便使這些醫生離去、被逐出王宮:這並非因為摩尼具備這樣的知識、精於醫術;
What therefore follows from that consequence, except this alternative, that the court of the Persian kings was so fortified with a cohort of physicians, just as troops of soldiers and fleets are wont to fortify camps? But what is more improbable? That Sapor indeed had among his domestics and familiars several men skilled in the art of physicians, reason itself persuades—whom, as we have seen, he caused to depart, banished from the royal palace, when it was reported to him that the impostor Manes prevailed as it were by divine power in healing diseases: not because he was endowed with such knowledge and versed in the art of physicians;
194:39
sed quia filio ægrotanti opitulari sperabat, ob insignem illam vitæ sanctimoniam quam simulare studebat, tum causa apostalatus Jesu Christi, quem sibi datum confingebat, tu mob cætera summæ pietatis et religionis signa, quæ omni diligentia affectabat. Hocce postremum affirmare rationabilius est, suffragantibus præsertim omnibus Gæcis Latinisque scriptoribus, qui etsi aliquatenus in verbis differant, in rei narratione tamen sibi invicem omnino respondent. Summæ et extremæ paupertatis præterea cultorem, qua eximæ sanctitatis opinionem sibi vindiça vit, Manem fuisse, Beausorbre asseveravit. At quodnam hujus paupertatis argumentum proferre potuit ? Nullum profecto suppetit.
but because he hoped to aid the sick son, on account of that remarkable sanctity of life which he studied to feign, both by reason of the apostolate of Jesus Christ, which he pretended had been given to him, and by reason of the other signs of the highest piety and religion, which he affected with all diligence. This latter it is more reasonable to affirm, especially with all the Greek and Latin writers agreeing, who, although they differ somewhat in words, nevertheless in the narration of the matter correspond wholly with one another. Moreover Beausobre asserted that Manes was a cultivator of the highest and most extreme poverty, by which he claimed for himself the opinion of singular sanctity. But what proof of this poverty could he bring forward? Truly none is at hand.
194:40
Quinimmo prorsus latere arbitramur quemadmodum is tantæ virtutis cultor dici potueri, quem ignoramus assecutas propter viduæ hæreditatim divitias dispersisse. Propterea subjicere dibuisset quomodo, quando, vel in quos usus, hæreditarias divitias insumpserit: an in pauperibus et infirmis alendis, an in amicis et consanguincis ditandis, an denique aliquod insigne pietatis opus coufecerit, ut sese ad extremam redigeret paupertatem? Ingentes divitias, Scythiani, et viduæ cujus fuerat mancipium, Manem assecutum fuisse, non negavit Beausobre præcedentibus capitibus.
Nay rather, we judge it to lie altogether hidden how he could be called a cultivator of such great virtue, whom we do not know to have dispersed the riches he had obtained through the widow's inheritance. Therefore he ought to have subjoined how, when, or to what uses he had spent the inherited riches: whether on feeding the poor and the sick, whether on enriching friends and kinsmen, or finally whether he accomplished some notable work of piety, so as to reduce himself to extreme poverty. That Manes obtained the immense riches of Scythianus and of the widow whose slave he had been, Beausobre did not deny in the preceding chapters.
194:41
Therefore it would have most befitted a more accurate and more diligent writer, such as he boasts himself to be, to reconcile these two mutually repugnant things together according to the best rules of critics, lest he introduce insipid narrations into his new history of the Manichaeans. Since he had omitted to do this, we draw the conclusion that Manes either affected outwardly no poverty at all, or at least only the appearance of poverty. 4. These things therefore having been thus briefly noted, let us return to the order of the history. Sapor therefore, king of the Persians, grieving from his heart at the destruction of the royal son, was so prepared to rage against the author of the perpetrated crime, that he should pay the penalties both of a murderer and of a most audacious and most wicked impostor.
194:42
Comprehenditur ergo Manes, et in arcium trusus carcerem ditinetur, se deum discipuliejus, quos secum duxerat, invisebant. Quorum alios, cum jam pridem adcomparanda novi veterisque Testamenti volumina Hierosolymam forte, vel in alias Chistianorum regionens misisset, hisce libris abuti statuerat, ad facilius Christiani nominis cultores ilJudendos decipiendosqu. Profecti (ait Epiphanius (Ibid, num. 5) discipuli, libros illos nulla interposita mora coemunt. Deinde ad magistrum reversi jam libertate privatum, carcerem ingressi libros offerunt. Inter illa ergo carceris otia, Manes sedulo acceptos divinarum Scriptararum libros evolvere cœpit.
Manes therefore is arrested, and thrust into the prison of the citadel he is detained, while his disciples, whom he had led with him, visited him. Some of these, since he had already long before perhaps sent to Jerusalem, or into other regions of the Christians, to procure volumes of the New and Old Testament, he had determined to abuse these books, in order the more easily to delude and deceive the worshippers of the Christian name. Having set out (says Epiphanius, ibid., no. 5), the disciples buy those books without any delay interposed. Then returning to their master, now deprived of liberty, having entered the prison they offer the books. Amid the leisure of the prison therefore, Manes began diligently to unroll the received books of the divine Scriptures.
194:43
And although he feigned to adopt and receive the New Testament, nevertheless by his rash presumptions, in almost innumerable places, he corrupted and depraved it, now by subtracting those things which convicted his lying and wicked life, now by supposing sundry additions which might add strength to the errors, fables, and delusions of his impious sect. Many of this impostor's misdeeds, blasphemies, foulnesses, false and lying promises, and disgraces, addressing the catechumens, Cyril of Jerusalem enumerates and exaggerates. Nowhere, however, does he make mention of the volumes of the Scriptures corrupted by him while he was detained in prison. But he especially holds him up to mockery, that he fled from prison. Therefore he subjoins:
194:44
For he who said that he was the Paraclete and the champion of the truth, fled; not a successor or imitator of Christ, who went eagerly to the cross; but by fleeing he was contrary to Him. 5. But a flight of this kind from prison, or an escape, would have been altogether impossible for the Manichaean, unless the guards, bound by avarice and sloth, had complied with his wishes. That most crafty man had assuredly known that the prefect of the public custody could, by these two means, namely by entreaties and by monies, be overcome and corrupted. And therefore, both aids having been applied without delay, he easily broke his chains. The matter Epiphanius narrates in nearly these terms (ibid., no. 5):
194:45
Meanwhile, the jailer having been prevailed upon by a great sum of money and by unremitting entreaties, he seized flight, and having left Persia, he enters the borders of the Romans. The anger of the Persian king, which Manes then escaped, the guards of the prison (says the praised Cyril) experienced monstrously. For their infidelity, or even avarice, having been discovered by the king, he inflicted upon them the penalty of death, by which he had decreed to punish the Manichaean; so that that same man who was the cause of the death of the royal boy should also, through his flight, become the cause of the death of the guards. Amid so many and so great perils of life therefore, prepared for himself from his own wickedness and the indignation of the most powerful king, Manes indeed ought to have become more prudent for the future; namely, that he should guard himself, lest he rashly attempt anything further, or anything wicked.
194:46
At contrarium evenisse, cum gravissimi auctores, tum indubitatæ fidei monumenta, quæ supersunt, testantur. Nam pristinam ille libertatem fraudulenter assecutus, et in Romanorum ditionem, positam in confiniis Persarum et Mesopotamiæ, se recipiens, quamvis aliquando solitudini va- care videretur, tamen in illo secessu, non paci et tranquillitati indulgebat; sed nova mobri facinora meditabatur, ut superbiæ et elationis spiritui, quo ducebatur, perpetuo serviret. Hunc autem e carceribus Manetis dilapsum paulo aliter descripsit Photius, nulla expressa facta mentione quibus mediis artibusque custodes illos vicerit atque deceperit. Ait dultaxat:
But that the contrary happened, both the weightiest authors and the monuments of undoubted faith which survive testify. For he, having fraudulently obtained his former liberty and betaking himself into the dominion of the Romans, situated on the confines of the Persians and Mesopotamia, although he sometimes seemed to give himself to solitude, nevertheless in that retreat he did not indulge in peace and tranquility; but he meditated new misdeeds to attempt, that he might perpetually serve the spirit of pride and elation by which he was led. But Photius described this escape of Manes from prison somewhat otherwise, no express mention being made by what means and arts he had overcome and deceived those guards. He says only:
194:47
Sed cum servus esset, ac servilis artificii peritus, sciresque se non diu postea patratæ cædis pœnas daturum, utpote qui filium regis impietate sua occidisset, e domo aufugit, et custodibus carceris nicis cause fuit; nam quia scelestum illum non accurate custodierant, capite omnes plexi sunt. Quænam servilis conditionis artificia quibus Manes in vinculis detentus uti potuerit, ut e carceribus dilapsus, capitis pœnam præcaveret, hic Photius expresse non indicavit. Sed probabile valde est quod ex Epiphanio superius retulimus. Nimirum carceris præfectum atque custodes ingenti pecuniarum, vi as- siduisque precibus vicisse;
但他既是奴隸,又諳熟奴僕的技倆,且知道自己不久之後將為所犯的殺害付出代價——因為他以其不虔殺了王的兒子——便從屋中逃走,成了獄卒死亡的緣由;因為他們沒有嚴密看守那邪惡之人,眾人都被斬首處決。摩尼在被鎖鏈囚禁時能使用的奴僕身分的技倆究竟為何——好讓他從監獄溜走、以規避死刑——福提烏在此並未明確指出。但我們上文從厄丕法尼所述的內容極為可信:即他以巨額金錢與不斷的懇求制伏了獄長與獄卒;
But since he was a slave, and skilled in servile craft, and knew that not long afterward he would pay the penalties of the perpetrated slaughter, inasmuch as he had by his impiety killed the son of the king, he fled from the house, and was the cause of death to the guards of the prison; for because they had not accurately guarded that wicked man, all were punished with beheading. What the crafts of the servile condition were, which Manes, detained in chains, could use, so that, having slipped from prison, he might guard against a capital penalty, Photius here did not expressly indicate. But it is very probable what we related above from Epiphanius: namely that he overcame the prefect of the prison and the guards by a great sum of money and unremitting entreaties;
194:48
especially since it is well known that the condition of vile slaves was never wont to reject gold and riches, and that slaves can easily be induced to sell their services. Whether therefore this could be an argument for that greatest poverty to which Beausobre describes Manes to have come, even before Sapor summoned him into the court to aid the sick boy with remedies and prayers, the reader himself shall judge; since meanwhile, before we remove our hand from the present picture, it behooves us to snatch away one other thing, which would utterly overthrow certain other matters established above from the ancients, if we should judge Beausobre's conjectures to have strength and truth. 7.
194:49
From the writings of the Orientals, then, Beausobre persuades himself that it became known to him that the hatred of the Persian king against Manichaeus took its origin by no means from the killing of the royal boy, but from the Christian religion which Manes professed. That king indeed, a worshipper of idols and of superstitious magic, knew that Manes had sent Thomas, Addas, Hermas, and other false apostles into the various regions of the world, who, running hither and thither, proclaimed the name of Christ, whose true apostle Manes falsely claimed himself to be by his preaching.
194:50
Idcirco certa persuasione ductus, novæ hujus sectæ propagationem, prolationem atque incrementum, sensim idololatriam et magorum superstitiosa figmenta ad exitium posse redigere, satuit Manem comprehendere, in carcerem compingere, ut tanti flagitii pœnas capitali supplicio lueret. Hujus porro regii decreti causam perspicue in Archelai Actis referri, assseverat, cum legitur: Mittit discipulos suos prædicaturos intrepide fictos simulatosque errores, etc.
Therefore, led by a firm conviction that the propagation, extension, and increase of this new sect could gradually bring idolatry and the superstitious figments of the magi to ruin, he resolved to seize Manes, to cast him into prison, so that he might pay for so great a crime by capital punishment. Moreover, he asserts that the cause of this royal decree is plainly reported in the Acts of Archelaus, where one reads: 'He sends his disciples to preach undauntedly feigned and counterfeit errors,' etc. When the king of the Persians had learned of this, he made ready to subject him to worthy tortures. Here it is well to ask the censor Beausobre: to which mission ought the praised words of the Acts of Archelaus to be referred?
194:51
Is it to be referred to the earlier mission of Manes's false apostles, which they carried out before their master was summoned by Sapor and held in prison; or to the subsequent one, which they did not shrink from undertaking even after they had learned that their master was to suffer death by capital sentence of the king? It is necessary that Beausobre confess that those words cannot and should not be referred to the first. For, returning from it, Thomas, Addas, and Hermas—about to give an account of their past preaching—find Manes held in prison, and coming to him, they not only relate the things done by themselves, but also bring some codices of the Scriptures of the New Testament to be corrupted.
194:52
Nnec falsitatem aut faubulæ olere præcedentem hanc Archelai narrationem, merito Beausobre confingit, S. Epiphanii testimonio ductus, affirmantis Menem Christianorum libros jampridem habuisse, antequam Persarum rex in carcerem compingeret. Siquidem aliquot male partos novi Testamenti libros, et eos forte, quos Valentiniani aliique hæreticorum corruperant habere potuit, cum jam eruditis notum sit Christianos catholicos ad integre servandos canonis libros multum operis adhibuisse; ne videlicet ethnici illos igni traderent, ut narrat Eusebius; et ne hæreticorum principes eos corrumperent et depravarent;
波索伯也不能有理地假稱阿爾赫勞前述的這段敘述帶有虛假或寓言的氣味——他是受聖厄比法尼(St. Epiphanius)的見證所引導,後者肯定摩尼早在波斯王將他下獄之前,就已擁有基督徒的書卷。因為摩尼確實可能擁有若干來歷不正的新約書卷,或許正是瓦倫廷派(Valentiniani)與其他異端所竄改過的那些;因為學者們都已知道,大公教會的基督徒為完整保存正典書卷曾付出許多辛勞,即:如猶西比烏(Eusebius)所述,惟恐外邦人將之付諸火焰,又惟恐異端的首領將之敗壞竄改;
Nor does Beausobre rightly pretend that this preceding narrative of Archelaus smacks of falsehood or of a fable—being led by the testimony of St. Epiphanius, who affirms that Manes had already possessed the books of the Christians long before the king of the Persians cast him into prison. For indeed he could have possessed several ill-gotten books of the New Testament, and perhaps those which the Valentinians and other heretics had corrupted, since it is already known to the learned that the catholic Christians expended much labor to preserve the books of the canon intact—namely, lest the heathen should give them over to the fire, as Eusebius relates, and lest the leaders of the heretics should corrupt and deprave them;
194:53
An non circumferebatur Evangilium Philippi, excogitatum a Guosticis ?
just as we gather that it had already been done, from the book of the Constitutions which are attributed to the apostles, concerning which we shall speak more opportunely. How, then, could it not have happened that Manes carried with him into prison some books of the New Testament—either whole and genuine ones, which he depraved at his pleasure, or ones already depraved and corrupted according to the interpretations of Valentinus, Carpocrates, and Marcion—and sent his disciples into the regions of the East and of Asia to seek out yet others? Or had those fabulous books which are inscribed as the Gospels of Peter, Thomas, and Matthias perhaps not yet come forth under the name of the New Testament? Or was not the Gospel of Philip, devised by the Gnostics, being circulated?
194:54
or, finally, that other one which the Gaianites published under the name of Judas the traitor? It is most certain that Scythianus and Manes drew their heresy from these and other similar poisoned sources, of which Eusebius and the Fathers spoke. Those two things, therefore, can well cohere with each other without any trace at all of contradiction: namely, that Manes, confined in prison, possessed some books of the New Testament, which he corrupted and depraved more and more with fabulous fabrications for the patronage of his sect; and that he received still others from Thomas, Addas, and Hermas, returning from the earlier mission—books which those scoundrels had bought from the Orientals with the help of money.
194:55
8. Who does not see that this preceding explanation does not at all conflict with Beausobre's system, but rather coheres with it? For he himself, setting out in the chapter mentioned to treat in passing of Manes's religion, supposes that from adolescence Manes had imbibed a Christianity depraved by many errors, chiefly from the commentaries of Scythianus—which he himself afterwards perhaps corrupted and depraved still more, so as to make it agree with his own philosophy and that of the magi. It now remains, therefore, for us to see whether Sapor flared up terribly against Manes on account of that mission of the false apostles, which Beausobre himself, led by the testimony of Archelaus (as we have seen), asserts to have been the sole cause of so great a hatred.
194:56
And, to preserve the order of past events, it can be gathered that two missions of these disciples were made by Manes: one before Manes had attempted to heal the royal boy, from which, when those who had been sent were returning, they delivered several codices of the New Testament to their master held in chains. But we judge it more probable that he undertook this second one. For if we wish to insist on the testimonies of the Acts of Archelaus, as we have already done, when Manes had been visited in prison by those same disciples, he urged them to fear nothing and rose up to prayer.
194:57
Quæ agendi ratio, auctore ipso Beausobre, argumento esse poterat, cum sanctitatis eximiæ, tum magnitudinis animi, quam fidelem Christi Domini discipulum habere oportebat. Quare concludit haud facile sectæ hujus principem se constituere potuisset, nisi magnas qualitates seu animi prærogativas habuisset. Ad hanc itaque animi confidentiam magis atque magis ostentandam, se nihil prorsus vereri intentatas pœnas et mortem ipsam Manes primo simulabat; et propterea ad auctoritatem sibi conciliandam suamque doctrinam extollendam, iterum mittit discipulos suos prædicaturos intrepide fictos simulatosque errores. Postrema hæc verba præcedentibus respondere nemini dubium erit.
This manner of acting, according to Beausobre himself, could be an argument both of surpassing sanctity and of that greatness of soul which a faithful disciple of Christ the Lord ought to have. Wherefore he concludes that Manes could not easily have set himself up as head of this sect, unless he had possessed great qualities or prerogatives of soul. And so, to display this confidence of soul more and more, Manes at first feigned that he feared not at all the threatened punishments and death itself; and therefore, to win authority for himself and to exalt his doctrine, 'again he sends his disciples to preach undauntedly feigned and counterfeit errors.' No one will doubt that these last words correspond to the preceding ones.
194:58
Propterea, tantæ andaciæ Sapores conscius factus, regii filii necem serio recogitans, homicidam diutius in carcerem vivum detineri haud permittens, dilatam hactenus mortem cum subire mandat, cum dignis suppliciis eum subdere parat. Verum antequam instruerentur quæ ad hujus impiissimi hominis exemplarem necem Sapores præceperat,corrupto carcerum custode, cæterisque militibus, fugam arripuit, quemadmodum in superioribus jam vidimus.
Therefore Sapor, having become aware of such audacity and seriously reconsidering the killing of the royal son, no longer permitting the murderer to be kept alive in prison, commands that the death hitherto deferred be undergone, and prepares to subject him to worthy tortures. But before the measures which Sapor had ordered for the exemplary execution of this most impious man could be arranged, having corrupted the keeper of the prison and the rest of the soldiers, Manes seized upon flight, just as we have already seen above.
194:59
These things it behooved us to write and observe in order to refute Beausobre's arguments, and this chiefly in order to reconcile the testimonies of the ancient writers—which Beausobre himself, little consistent with himself, turning and twisting everything upside down, contends are to be reckoned of little worth and deserving of no credence. But now let us return to the order of the history.
