252:1
I. Gemina hodiernæ festivitatis nobis, fratres cbarissimi, renovantur gaudia, dum annua Doctoris mundi percolimus natalitia. Unde exsultantes ill Deo et immensas ejus ineffabili majestati referentes laudes, ingenti laetitia gratulemur, et nimirum affluentissima jucunditate laetari oportet, quia quoties sanctorum memoria celebratur, nimio fidelium mentes gaudio replentur, et spiritualibus admodum profectibus illustrantur, in id quod eorum præsentia adesse non ambigitur.
A twofold joy of today's festivity, dearest brothers, is renewed for us, as we celebrate the annual birthday of the Teacher of the world. Wherefore, exulting in God and rendering boundless praises to his ineffable majesty, let us rejoice with immense gladness; and indeed it is fitting to be glad with the most abundant joy, because as often as the memory of the saints is celebrated, the minds of the faithful are filled with exceeding joy and are greatly illumined by spiritual advances, in this: that it is not doubted their presence is at hand.
252:2
Convenientibus ergo no!is, charissimi, huic sacratissimæ aulae eumdem in medio nostrum egregium prædicatorem assistere (12) et spirituali atque invisibili quodammodo pariter nobi cum in hac ejus celeberrima solemnitate credimus gratulari. Et idco nulla debet, d.lectissimi, quemquam Christianorum ad occurrendum huic venerandæ ecclesiæ, ubi sanctum ejus quiescit corpus, desidia irretire torporis, praecipue autem cuncti Romanæ urbi et finitimis commorantes ngionibus;
所以親愛的弟兄,當我們聚集到這至聖的殿堂時,我們相信這位卓越的傳道者就親在我們中間,並且他以某種屬靈而不可見的方式,同樣在他這最著名的節期中與我們一同歡喜。因此親愛的弟兄,任何基督徒都不該被怠惰的麻木所纏累,以致不趕赴這安放著他聖體的可敬教會——尤其那些住在羅馬城及鄰近地區的眾人;
As we then come together, beloved, to this most sacred hall, we believe that the same illustrious preacher stands present in our midst, and that he, in some spiritual and invisible manner, likewise rejoices together with us in this his most renowned solemnity. And therefore, beloved, no sloth of torpor ought to entangle any of the Christians so as to keep him from hastening to this venerable church, where his holy body rests—and above all all those dwelling in the city of Rome and in the neighbouring regions;
252:3
quam totam (13) accelerare prae omnibus congruit, nam (14) si universi de extremis mundi partibus, neque austeritalem acerrimi itineris, neque prolixitatis terrae spatia metuentes, eo quo (15) valent tempore, apostolorum devote se praesentari inhiant lim nibus (1), quid Homani cives excusationis proferre in co quod (2) prasentialiter assistentes dissimulant saltem in eorum occurrere festivitate, dum eorumdem apostolorum precibus defensionis tueri noscuntur ope. II. Hesterno quippe die (3), quo ipsi apostolorum principes martyrio sunt coronati, devotissimo affectu in ecclesia benti Tetri apostoli properantes ejus celebravimns solemnitatem;
全城理當在眾人之先趕赴那裡;因為若人們從世界最遠的地方而來,既不懼怕極艱辛之路途的嚴酷,也不懼怕陸地廣袤的距離,在他們所能的時候,虔誠渴慕來到使徒的門檻前,那麼羅馬的市民在此事上又能提出甚麼藉口呢?就是他們明明近在眼前,竟輕忽此事,甚至不出來在這些使徒的節日中迎接他們,雖然他們明知是靠這同一批使徒護衛之祈求得蒙保守。昨日,即這幾位使徒之首戴上殉道冠冕之日,我們懷著至為虔誠的情感趕赴使徒聖彼得的教會,慶祝了他的節期;
to which it befits the whole city to hasten before all others; for if men from the farthest parts of the world, fearing neither the harshness of a most arduous journey nor the vast stretches of land, in such time as they are able, devoutly yearn to present themselves at the thresholds of the apostles, what excuse can the citizens of Rome offer in this, that, being present at hand, they make light of it and do not even come out to meet them at their festival, while they are known to be guarded by the help of those same apostles' prayers of protection? Indeed yesterday, on which these very chiefs of the apostles were crowned with martyrdom, we celebrated his solemnity, hastening with most devout affection into the church of blessed Peter the apostle;
252:4
etenim oportebat ut ejus qui principatum promeruit adipisci apostolatus, pr us celebraretur festivitas. Hodie vero doctoris gentium ct totius mundi illuminatoris natalitia colimus. Nam licet pariter ambo martyrii bravium sumpserint, propter confluentis tamen populi frequentiam in illum diem beati apostoli Pauli -festum (4) inerat ratio transferendi: ut sicut in beati Petri aulam universa convenit multitudo, ita in eJus coapostoli Ecclesiam (5) eadem pariter annexa conflueret populi congregatio, æqualiterque omnibus inesset lætandi devotio.
for it was fitting that the festival of him who deserved to obtain the primacy of the apostolate should first be celebrated. But today we keep the birthday of the Teacher of the Gentiles and the Enlightener of the whole world. For although both alike received the prize of martyrdom, yet on account of the great throng of the converging people there was reason to transfer to that day the feast of blessed Paul the apostle: so that, just as the whole multitude gathers into the hall of blessed Peter, so into the church of his fellow apostle the same gathering of the people, joined in like manner, might converge, and that the devotion of rejoicing might equally be present to all. And behold, very many, whether through sloth or being given over to worldly concerns, have put off coming to this most excellent hall of blessed Paul.
252:5
Quapropter, fratres charissimi, abjivienda est omnis mundana cogitatio (7) et temporalis lucri desideria respuenda, eoque omnes quo valemus annisu ad celebrandam sanctorum memoriam, maxime beatorum Petri et Pauli apostolorum princitum natalitio (8) occurrentes. In amborum ecclesias devote pariter aggregati conveniamus, ut sicut pares eos honorum infula divina illustravit dignatio, illos sic habeat in solemnitatibus devotio. III. Hic enim beatissimus prius quidem Saulus et postmodum Paulus, prius inquam persecutor, postmodum prædicator, Judaicæ crudelitatis infectussoevilia, nimia ferocitatis adversus Christianos exardescebat insania.
Wherefore, dearest brothers, every worldly thought is to be cast away and the desires of temporal gain to be spurned, and with all the effort we are able let us come to celebrate the memory of the saints, especially hastening to the birthday of the blessed chiefs of the apostles, Peter and Paul. Into the churches of both, gathered together devoutly in like manner, let us assemble, so that, as the divine condescension adorned them with an equal mark of honours, so devotion may hold them equal in their solemnities. For this most blessed man, first Saul and afterward Paul—first, I say, a persecutor, afterward a preacher—infected with the savagery of Jewish cruelty, blazed with an exceeding madness of ferocity against the Christians.
252:6
Nam sicut in Actibus apostolorum continetur, accepta a principibus sacerdotum potestare ut si quos cultores (9) Christianæ religionis invenire potuisset, vinctos in Jerusalem deduceret, ibat tremens. magna irreptus saevitia, et subito coelestis radii splendore illustratus ac perterritus audivit vocem de cœlo dicentem sibi: Saule, Saule, quid me persequeris ? Durum esl libi contra stimulum calcilrare (Act. IX, 4); et protinus cadens in terram oculorum tumen amisit. 0 magnæ pietatis omnipotentis Dei nostri benignitas ! U inaestimabilis longanimitatis misericordia! Modicum eum perterruit, ut multipliciter consolarclur.
For as is contained in the Acts of the Apostles, having received power from the chief priests that if he could find any worshippers of the Christian religion he might bring them bound to Jerusalem, he went, trembling and seized with great savagery; and suddenly, illumined by the splendour of a heavenly ray and terror-struck, he heard a voice from heaven saying to him: Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goad (Acts 9:4); and at once, falling to the ground, he lost the light of his eyes. O the kindness of the great mercy of our almighty God! O the mercy of his inestimable forbearance! He terrified him but a little, that he might console him in manifold ways.
