It is known to all that your mildness has care and solicitude for Christians and for the catholic faith, to such a degree that you would command that nothing at all be done to its injury. When therefore we had happily entered Rome, and had come to the thresholds of the basilica of the most holy apostle Peter, Leo, the most blessed bishop of the city of Rome, together also with very many other bishops, presented a petition to us, saying that the whole dogma of religion throughout the East had been disturbed, and that it had come to pass that the whole faith of Christians was being led into utter confusion. For he lamented that Flavian, bishop of the Church of Constantinople, had been expelled on account of the enmities of the bishop of Alexandria;

et hoc cum aliis episcopis postulavit, protestans et ipsorum venerabilium locorum cultum, et mansuetudinis nostrae salutem, quatenus ad tuam clementiam ex hac causa meas litteras destinarem, domine sanctissime pater, et adorabilis imperator. Salutans igitur justa posco,quatenus his litteris curam vestra tranquillitas præbere dignetur, et quae male gesta sunt emendari præcipiat, donec omnibus quae jam definita sunt revocatis, ex integro causa fidei et Christianae religionis, quae mota est, in partibus Italia congregato concilio, perquiratur. Scriptum est enim hic omnem contentionem motam, quatenus Flavianus episcopus ex humanis rebus potuisset auferri.

and this he petitioned together with the other bishops, protesting both the veneration of those venerable places and the welfare of our mildness, that I should for this cause direct my letters to your clemency, most holy lord and father, and adorable emperor. Greeting you, therefore, I justly ask that your tranquillity deign to give heed to these letters, and command that the things which have been ill done be amended, until, all the things that have already been defined being revoked, the cause of the faith and of the Christian religion, which has been stirred up, may be investigated afresh in the regions of Italy by a council convened. For it is written here that all the contention was stirred up in order that Flavian the bishop might be removed from among human affairs.
