201:1
1. After that savage death of Manes, so many and so virulent seeds of his wickedness were by no means extinguished and abolished; but, being scattered here and there, within a short space of time, through the zeal of other impious men, they drove deep roots into the minds of many, and extended their bounds to the hatred of the Christian religion. And first indeed, if we give full credit to Archelaus, and to Turbo, and to Ephraem the deacon of Edessa, the Manichaean dogmas were announced to Egypt. Namely, when Manes, still surviving, set his chief false apostles over those places and provinces. He (Manes, namely) commanded his disciples to set out into the three regions of the world; of whom Addas obtained as his lot the part of the East.
201:2
Thomas vero Syrorum terras suscepit. Thomas primum occupat locum, huneque abiisse in Judæam idem Epiphamus affirlat, refragante tamen Dionysio Petavio in suis annotationibus, qai pro Judœa legendum putat lndiam.
But Thomas took upon himself the lands of the Syrians. And Hermas set out to Egypt … for the sake of preaching this dogma. Concerning this order and division of provinces, however, William Cave alone noted a little differently from him. For in Cyril and Epiphanius, Thomas occupies the first place, and Epiphanius affirms that he went into Judea, though Dionysius Petavius disagrees in his annotations, who thinks that for 'Judea' one should read 'India.' And indeed Theodoret so holds, that Thomas was sent to the Indians. With Theodoret likewise agrees Nicephorus, book 6, chapter 32. And if this be so, the impostor wished to imitate Christ even in this respect, when he destined the apostle Thomas to preach his gospel in India.
201:3
Jam vero isto Thoma relicto, ad Addam Turbonis præceptopto rem, alium principem ejusdem impostoris Manetis pseudoapostolum, se vertitoratio. Hunc ergo ad Syros decipiendos missum fuisse, idem Archelaus 109 asseverat; sed Buddam Petrus Siculus eum appellat. Biddam Cyrillus, Aldam Theodoretus.
But now, leaving that Thomas, our discourse turns to Addas, the teacher of Turbo, another chief false apostle of the same impostor Manes. This one, then, the same Archelaus affirms was sent to deceive the Syrians; but Peter of Sicily calls him Budda, Cyril Biddas, Theodoret Aldas; while Epiphanius and Nicephorus—the Acts of the disputation of Archelaus being otherwise—called him Addas. But however that may be, it is certain that the man of whom we treat not only trod in the footsteps of his teacher but, by many other new things devised, rendered the Manichaean dogmas more abundant by his own exertion.
201:4
Hac quippe de caussa librum unum concinnavit, quem Modion appellavit, cujus maminit auctor Tollinus, contra quod volumen, auctore photio in sua Bibliotheca, post iliquot annorum sseriem stylum strixere Titus Bostrorum in Arabia episcopus, et Diodorus UTarsensis antisses in Cilicia, quæ argumento sunt quarto jam vertente Ecclesiæ sæculo eas provincias ejusmodi labe fuisse pollutas. Aliter tamen, et quidem parum sibi constans, Beausobre ratiocinatur, qui de Tito Bostrorum episcopo verba faciens nos Addæ Modion, sed librum de Mysteriir, qui sub Manetis nomine circumferebatur, rejecisse affirmat. Aliam ab Epiphanio secutum esse agendi rationem episcopum Titum in hoc libro refellendo asseverat;
正因如此,他確實編著了一部書,稱之為《摩狄翁》(Modion),作者托利努斯(Tollinus)曾提及此書;針對此卷——以佛提烏在其《書目》中為權威——過了若干年後,阿拉伯波斯特拉(Bostra)的主教提圖斯(Titus)與基利家塔爾蘇斯(Tarsus)的主教狄奧多魯斯(Diodorus)動筆撰文駁斥;這證明,早在教會的第四世紀轉入之時,那些行省就已被此類毒害所玷污。然而,博索布爾卻另有推論——而且的確前後頗不一致——他論及波斯特拉主教提圖斯時,向我們斷言提圖斯所駁斥的並非阿達斯的《摩狄翁》,而是以摩尼之名流傳的《論奧秘》一書。他斷言提圖斯主教在駁斥此書時所採用的方法與埃皮法尼烏斯不同;
For this reason indeed he composed a certain book, which he called the Modion, of which Tollinus the author makes mention; against which volume—Photius being the authority in his Bibliotheca—after a series of some years, Titus, bishop of Bostra in Arabia, and Diodorus, the prelate of Tarsus in Cilicia, drew their pens; which are an argument that already, when the fourth century of the Church was turning, those provinces were polluted by a corruption of this kind. Otherwise, however—and indeed with little consistency—Beausobre reasons, who, speaking of Titus bishop of Bostra, affirms to us that he refuted not the Modion of Addas, but the book On the Mysteries, which was circulated under the name of Manes. He asserts that bishop Titus followed a different method from Epiphanius in refuting this book;
201:5
divendo eum 22 capitibus juxta Syrorum alphabetum fuisse distributum, ac solide deinde ab hoc docto prudente episcopo, sine ullis invectivis in suum adverssarium, errores fuisse refutatos, quin aucorem tamquam magum, et dœmonum interpellatorem, in abominabilibus mysteriis occupatum apellet. Addit manem hujusce libri auctorem philosophum fuisse, qui sibi persusit muudum hunc minime repondere ideæ quam nos de divinis perfectionibus habemus, ac propterea secum reputasse aliud principium præter Deum ipsum babuisse. Operum Titi Bosttrensis subsidia Beeausobre adhibuisse affirmat, quia is alisque ulia comparatione magis exacte et moderate quam Epiphanius ipse scripsit. Quid vero ?
saying that it was divided into 22 chapters according to the alphabet of the Syrians, and that afterward the errors were solidly refuted by this learned and prudent bishop, without any invectives against his adversary, without calling the author a magician and an invoker of demons, occupied with abominable mysteries. He adds that Manes, the author of this book, was a philosopher, who had persuaded himself that this world by no means corresponds to the idea which we have of the divine perfections, and therefore had reasoned within himself that there existed some other principle besides God himself. He affirms that Beausobre employed the aid of the works of Titus of Bostra, because he wrote with more exactness and moderation, beyond all comparison, than Epiphanius himself. But what of it?
201:6
Exhoruit ergo Titus Bostrensis expendere quœ magis mystica a Manichæo invita fuere Nec alia ratione ea prætermisisseceri portet, ne videlicet lectotum animum offenderet; quemadmodum de abominabilibus hisce mysteriis S.
With such an apparatus of great matters set aside and neglected, Beausobre fell into such drowsiness that the things just said soon slipped from his mind. For, having forgotten that he had written that Manes was not accused by Titus of Bostra of magic, the invocation of demons, and abominable mysteries, he afterward adds that this bishop took it grievously to report and to bring to examination the things which had been mystically devised by the Manichaean—'but passing over in silence those things which were invented more mystically by the Manichaean, which are very many.' Titus of Bostra therefore shrank from weighing the things more mystically invented by the Manichaean. Nor ought he to have passed them over for any other reason than lest, namely, he should offend the mind of the readers; just as concerning these abominable mysteries St.
201:7
Leo Magnus disserere recusavit. Sed adhuc difficultas superest an Titus Bostrensis in suo opere Manetis mystseriorum volumen oppuguet, an vero amiud Modion vidselicet, ab Adda consecriptum, sola Beausobre autorinate ductus, ego quidem non definam Hunc enim Photii testimonium prævalere debere mecum judicabunt qui illius in sua adornanda Bibliotheca studium adhibitum aprrime noverunt. Sed de Addæ libro infra verba faciemus. 1. Circa hunc Addam vero, illusque opus quondam se gravius aberrasse Guilielmus Cave sincere fassus est; cum hanc videlicet non alium fuisse ab Adimanto arbitraretur, cujus totier apud Augustium occurrit mentio, quemque S. episcopus peculiari opere refutavit.
Leo the Great refused to discourse. But still a difficulty remains, whether Titus of Bostra in his work attacks the volume of the mysteries of Manes, or rather another, namely the Modion, composed by Addas. Led by the sole authority of Beausobre, I for my part shall not decide. For those will judge with me that the testimony of Photius ought to prevail, who very well know the zeal he applied in adorning his Bibliotheca. But concerning the book of Addas we shall speak below. 1. Concerning this Addas indeed, and his work, William Cave sincerely confessed that he had once erred more gravely; when, namely, he supposed him to be none other than Adimantus, of whom mention so often occurs in Augustine, and whom the holy bishop refuted in a special work.
201:8
At vero quid oscitantius aut iniquius simili excusatione ? Non enim genuina Augustini retulit verba. Sed falsata. Nam subducta ab eo testimonio voce filius, hanc aliam, pronomen videlicet, illius, intulit, quæ S.
But this false opinion the same Cave, following long ago the history of Peter of Sicily and the author of the Cotelerian and Tollian formulas, retracted; but, in order at the same time to excuse himself, he wrongly ascribes the cause of his former lapse to Augustine alone, whose following words he recites: 'For that other work which had begun to be written in the same codex is the work of Adimantus, that disciple of the Manichaean, who by his own name was called Addas.' But indeed, what more drowsy or more unjust than such an excuse? For he did not report the genuine words of Augustine, but falsified ones. For, having withdrawn from that testimony the word 'son' (filius), he introduced this other, namely the pronoun 'of that one' (illius), which St.
201:9
ductoris sensa in aliam omnio significationem trabit, quam sibi expedire Caveus arbitratus est. An hoc indicibat a præcedenti suo lapsu surgere, et errorem reparare voluisse, cum S. Doctori vitio vertit. eumque injuste vellicat et impetis? Nugæ profecto. Nam Augustini verba isthæc sunt: Nam illud aliud quod in eodem codice scribi cœperat, Adimanti opus est, filius disciplini Manichæi, proprio nomine, aut prænomine (ut Maurini PP. legunt) Addas dictus est. Nec in prænomine voce, quam. mss. codd. Auctoritatem secuti, pro duabus illis proprio nomine congregationis S. Mauri PP.in novissima intulerunt editione, Cavei allucinatio, oscitantia, aut mala fides consistit;
把這位聖師的原意扭曲成與凱夫自認為對自己有利的、截然不同的意思。當他指責這位聖師有過失、不公地挑剔並攻擊他時,這豈能表明他想要從先前的失誤中站起、修補自己的錯誤呢?實在是無稽之談。因為奧古斯丁的話是這樣的:「因為在同一抄本中開始書寫的那另一部作品,乃是阿狄曼圖斯——那位摩尼派門徒之子——的著作,此人按其本名,或按其前名(如毛里斯派〔Maurist〕諸神父所讀),被稱為阿達斯。」凱夫的錯覺、昏睡或惡意,並不在於「前名」(praenomen)一詞——聖毛爾修會(Congregation of St. Maur)的諸神父依循手抄本抄卷的權威,在最新版本中以此詞代替了「按其本名」(proprio nomine)那兩個詞;
drags the Doctor's meaning into an entirely different signification than Cave judged expedient for himself. Did this indicate that he wished to rise from his previous lapse and repair his error, when he charged the holy Doctor with a fault, and unjustly plucks at and attacks him? Trifles indeed. For Augustine's words are these: 'For that other work which had begun to be written in the same codex is the work of Adimantus, the son of the disciple of the Manichaean, who by his own name, or forename (as the Maurist Fathers read), was called Addas.' Nor does Cave's hallucination, drowsiness, or bad faith consist in the word 'forename' (praenomen)—which the Fathers of the Congregation of St. Maur, following the authority of the manuscript codices, introduced in the most recent edition in place of those two words 'by his own name' (proprio nomine);
201:10
sed in vocabulo filius, quod perperam in istud pronomen illius mutavit. Apud enim nullos editores, vel mss. Exemplaria, hanc vocem illius offendimus: sed constantissime filius vocabulum exhibent. Nobis ergo ex eodem Augustino luce clarius innotescit alium fuisse Addam, et alium Adimantum, quamvis ambo Manichaici dogmatis assertores et propugnatores impiissimi. Quare cum nomen Addas, non ad filium, sed ad Manichæi discipulum referat Augustinus, illud sequitur quod ad Cavei et rem nostram potissimum pertinere videbitur. Adimantum videlicet, vel ex Adda patre naturæ originem duxisse, aut saltem ob pessimas institutiones ex eo haustas et imbibitas ejusdem filium appellari;
而是在於「兒子」(filius)一詞,他錯誤地把它改成了那代名詞「那一位的」(illius)。因為在任何編者或手抄本中,我們都未遇見過「那一位的」這個詞;反倒它們極其一致地呈現「兒子」一詞。因此,藉著同一位奧古斯丁,我們比光更清楚地看出:阿達斯是一人,阿狄曼圖斯是另一人,儘管兩者都是摩尼派教義極不敬虔的主張者與捍衛者。因此,既然奧古斯丁把「阿達斯」之名不歸於那兒子、而歸於那摩尼派的門徒,那麼就得出一個對凱夫、尤其對我們的論題似乎極為切要的結論:即阿狄曼圖斯要麼以阿達斯為父而由其本性衍生,要麼至少因從他那裡汲取並吸收的極壞教導而被稱為他的兒子;
but in the word 'son' (filius), which he wrongly changed into that pronoun 'of that one' (illius). For among no editors, nor manuscript copies, do we come upon this word 'of that one'; but they most constantly exhibit the word 'son.' To us, therefore, from the same Augustine it becomes clearer than light that Addas was one person, and Adimantus another, although both were most impious assertors and champions of the Manichaean dogma. Wherefore, since Augustine refers the name 'Addas' not to the son but to the disciple of the Manichaean, that follows which will seem especially to pertain to Cave and to our subject: namely, that Adimantus either drew the origin of his nature from Addas as his father, or at least is called his son on account of the wicked instructions drawn and drunk in from him;
201:11
for which reasons the surname 'Addas' too could have suited him, namely to indicate Adimantus's kinship, or that school from which he had come forth. Finally, what is against it that Adimantus should first have been called Addas by his own name—as this word 'forename' is apt to signify—and afterward have changed it into another, following the example of Cubricus, his standard-bearer? Not thence, however, ought this Addas to be said to be the same as another chief false apostle of Manes, who obtained by lot the parts of the East to be traversed, his master yet surviving. 4. But besides Thomas, Addas, and Hermas, the chief followers of Manes, the rest also of that number of twelve disciples strenuously applied themselves to propagating that nefarious heresy.
201:12
For Peter of Sicily narrates that, when Manes was slain, some of his followers penetrated into Armenia at Samosata, where, having sown the seed of impiety, they enticed many of the Armenians into deceit. Which seed, growing greatly, that most wicked root sprouting up and advancing as far as Phanaroea, brought deadly fruits to many. But by whose exertions especially that nefarious heresy nearly ruined Armenia and Phanaroea itself, the same Peter of Sicily—who long afterward discharged an embassy to the Armenians on behalf of the emperor Basil—explained in few words, when he said that Callinice, a woman, had twin children, of whom one was called Paul, the other John.
201:13
These two serpents, then, the viper mother nourished, and, having taught them the nefarious sect, sent them forth from Samosata as heralds of error; who, having entered the dominion of Phanaroea and come to a certain village, and finding there rude inhabitants little settled in the faith, scattered the poison of impiety and the dire tare of the demon-enemy. That this woman Callinice was impure and lost, Dionysius Petavius asserts. Who likewise teaches from the same Peter of Sicily that she sent her abominable offspring into diverse places of Armenia to propagate the dogmas of the Manichaean. Meanwhile, however, a grave controversy can arise, as to when such a mission occurred; or at what time especially by these two brothers that heresy borrowed a new name.
201:14
Quæ quidem quæstio cum multis tenebris sit obvoluta, haud facile definiri poterit. Etinim duo ibidem Petrum Siculum indicare voluisse valde probabile est. Alterum videlicet, Manete necato, aliquos ex duodenario illo discipulorum numero, statim Armeniæ provinciam penetrasso, ibique receptos omne pravi dogmatis virus effudisse, quod cum magis in dies succresceret, totam illam regionem labefactaverit, pravisque dogmatibus cor- ruperit. Alterum vero est: non nisi varils sæculis a Manetis nece elapsis, Galliniciam illam Samosatam mulierem geminos suos filios Phanariam misisse, veluti novos hujus nefandæ sectæ antesignanos atque præcones;
此問題既被重重黑暗所籠罩,便不易解決。因為極有可能西西里的伯多祿在那裡意在指明兩件事。其一,即當摩尼被殺後,那十二門徒之數中的一些人立即潛入亞美尼亞省,並在那裡被接納,傾瀉出那敗壞教義的全部毒液,這毒液日益增長,遂顛覆了整個地區,並以敗壞的教義腐化了它。但另一件事是:唯有在摩尼死後過了若干世紀,那薩摩薩塔的婦人加利尼克才把她的一對雙生子差往法納羅埃亞,作為這可憎教派新的旗手與傳令官;
Which question, since it is wrapped in much darkness, cannot easily be settled. For it is very probable that Peter of Sicily meant to indicate two things there. One, namely, that when Manes had been slain, some of that number of twelve disciples immediately penetrated the province of Armenia, and, being received there, poured out the whole venom of the depraved dogma, which, as it grew greater day by day, undermined that whole region and corrupted it with depraved dogmas. But the other is: that only after various centuries had elapsed from the death of Manes, that woman Callinice of Samosata sent her twin sons to Phanaroea, as new standard-bearers and heralds of this abominable sect;
201:15
so that, namely, they might vomit forth the most wicked instructions which they had already imbibed, to the ruin of the rude peoples. Which indeed could have been the reason that, various centuries having elapsed, the then-old name of the heresy was changed into another, that of the Paulicians. 5. But that I may not seem in these matters either to divine, or be forced to break the thread of the whole history which we are writing, I will bring forward those points on which our preceding conjectures rest. Among which that ought to be reckoned the chief, which Augustine supplies in his book On Heresies.
201:16
Is ergo, oprime de Manichæorum mysteriis et profanis ritibus edoctus, non tantum describit quomodo, occiso Manete, unus electorum veluti omnium princeps, et totius sectæ caput, duodecim aliis electis, quos magistros appellabant, præesset; sed quantum cœtus ille excreverit et se ampliaverit narrat. Etenim, eo auctore, quasi ad Christianæ catholicæ hierarchiæ formam et similitudinem duodecim illi pseudoapostoli cum iniquo diabolicoque suo capite septuaginta duos episcopos ordinare cœperunt: episcopi tum presbytoros ordinabant, tum diaconos sibi eligebant. Nam ex electis suis habent duodecim, quos appellant magistros, et tertium decimum principem eorum:
He, then, being excellently instructed concerning the mysteries and profane rites of the Manichaeans, not only describes how, when Manes was slain, one of the elect, as the prince of all and head of the whole sect, presided over twelve other elect, whom they called masters; but he also narrates how greatly that assembly grew and enlarged itself. For, on his authority, as though to the form and likeness of the Christian Catholic hierarchy, those twelve false apostles, with their wicked and diabolical head, began to ordain seventy-two bishops: the bishops then would ordain presbyters and choose deacons for themselves. 'For from their elect they have twelve, whom they call masters, and a thirteenth as their prince:'
201:17
'but seventy-two bishops, who are ordained by the masters, and presbyters who are ordained by the bishops. The bishops also have deacons.' But besides those whom they ordained by profane and sacrilegious rites, and who were taken up to compose the nobler part of that diabolical hierarchy, they also sent others out of the same class of the elect here and there to deceive rude and simpler men, so that more readily and more easily they might either confirm their own dogmas or propagate them. Wherefore the same Augustine immediately subjoins thus: 'And now the rest are called only elect: but even these are sent who seem fit for this error, either where it is to be sustained and increased, or where it is not yet, to be sown.'
201:18
Hæc autem a Manichæis Augustini tempore fieri consuevisse, idem S. doctor hisce verbis testatus est scribens: Quem numerum Manichæi hodieque custodiunt. Cum igitur Augustinus, qui omnia Manichaicæ sectæ dogmata, mysterian, phylosophiam, gradus, ordinationes, hierarchiam et incrementa optime noverat, nullibi geminorum horum fratrum faciat mentionem, recte conjectari potest anno 428, quo opus illud de ha resibus conscripsit, nondum eam sobolem in orbem ex infernalibus ergastulis produisse, et Manichæos a Paulicianis novum nomen tum fuisse mutuatos.
That these things were accustomed to be done by the Manichaeans in Augustine's time, the same holy Doctor testified in these words, writing: 'Which number the Manichaeans keep even to this day.' Since, therefore, Augustine, who knew excellently all the dogmas, mysteries, philosophy, grades, ordinations, hierarchy, and increases of the Manichaean sect, nowhere makes mention of these twin brothers, it can rightly be conjectured that in the year 428, in which he wrote that book On Heresies, that offspring had not yet come forth into the world from the infernal prisons, and that the Manichaeans had not yet then borrowed a new name from the Paulicians.
201:19
Nec liceat suspicari id Augustinum latere potuisse, quia Armenorum et Asiæ regiones in quibus (auctore Petro Siculo) ista contigerant, ab Hippona Africæ urbe, ex qua Augustinus istud opus conscripserat, remotissimæ erant. Non hæc, inquam, quis suspicetur. Nam S. doctor, qui jam a pueritia in Manichæorum in- ciderat errores, et horum philosophiæ studiis maxime fuerat addictus, optime etiam nomina quibus secta illa appellabatur novit, descripsitque, eamque in Paphlagonia Armeniæ parte, in Gallia, in Africa, alusque regionibus grassari sine ulla prorsus ambiguitate fassus est.
Nor let it be permitted to suspect that this could have escaped Augustine's notice, because the regions of the Armenians and of Asia in which (on the authority of Peter of Sicily) these things had happened were most remote from Hippo, the city of Africa, from which Augustine had written that work. Let no one, I say, suspect this. For the holy Doctor, who from boyhood had fallen into the errors of the Manichaeans, and had been most addicted to the studies of their philosophy, also knew excellently and described the names by which that sect was called, and confessed without any ambiguity whatsoever that it raged in Paphlagonia, a part of Armenia, in Gaul, in Africa, and in other regions. And indeed, in the praised book On Heresies, he asserts that the Catharists are called Manichaeans, as it were 'purifiers.'
201:20
From which name he seizes the occasion to lash and pursue them more severely, because with horrid foulness they defiled human food. And again, in the book On the Nature of the Good, he stirs up certain of their foulnesses, by which they wrongly contended—both as toward the divine author of things, contumeliously—that part of God was bound through the coitus of males and females, which they professed to loose and purify by eating; he appeals to certain public confessions of the same crimes, by which they testified that they did this in a public trial, not only in Paphlagonia, but also in Gaul, 'as I heard from a certain Catholic Christian at Rome.'
201:21
To Augustine, therefore, who was writing these things in the year 404, it had been very well persuaded that in Paphlagonia, a region of Armenia, this heresy raged more widely, and this he recounted both from the public acts of the trials and from the report of others. Augustine therefore would not have omitted to report and reject those things which were afterward devised by the Paulicians for the confirmation, increase, and strength of this sect: which both those good-for-nothing brothers acquired with great zeal, in order the more foully to undermine the Catholic religion, and to assail and pierce with curses the Catholic ministers of the cross, and the mysteries of the Eucharist, and the perpetual virginity of the Mother of God, and other things of this kind.
201:22
Cum ergo in tam multis variisque libris et operibus ab Augustino contra Manichæos aliosque hæreticos conscriptis, nullibi Paulicianorum fratrum nomen occurat, cum nullibi præterea ab eo recenseatur ea hæreseos additamenta quæ a Petro Siculo nobis indicata sunt, nulla ratione adduci possum ut arbitrer jam Manetis morte secuta, geminos eos fratres hujus hæreseos vindices et auctores fuisse;
因此,既然在奧古斯丁針對摩尼派與其他異端所寫的如此眾多而多樣的書卷與著作中,保羅派兄弟之名絕未出現,而且既然他也絕未在何處述說西西里的伯多祿向我們所指明的那些異端增添之物,那麼我無論如何都不能被引導去認為:早在摩尼死後,那對雙生兄弟就已是此異端的捍衛者與創始人;
Since, therefore, in so many and various books and works written by Augustine against the Manichaeans and other heretics, nowhere does the name of the Paulician brothers occur, and since moreover nowhere is there recounted by him those additions to the heresy which have been indicated to us by Peter of Sicily, by no reasoning can I be led to think that already, when the death of Manes had followed, those twin brothers were the champions and authors of this heresy;
201:23
idcirco de iisdem luculentius disserere nunc supervacaneum existimo, de quibus postea verba facere nobis opus erit, cum, servata, quantum possumus, temporum ordine atque ratione, hujus hæreseos sobolem septimo Ecclesiæ sæculo ad catholicæ religionis contemptum latius adhuc in Syriæ et Asiæ regiones grassantem dicemus. 6. Interim vero minime prætereundum esse arbitramur jam ante Augustini ævum et quarto ineunte Ecclesiæ sæculo Armeniam et Paphlagoniam potissimum ejusmodi Manetis erroribus labefactatam fuisse.
therefore I now judge it superfluous to discourse more clearly concerning them, of whom we shall need to speak afterward, when, preserving as far as we can the order and reasoning of times, we shall tell of the offspring of this heresy in the seventh century of the Church raging still more widely, to the contempt of the Catholic religion, in the regions of Syria and Asia. 6. But meanwhile we judge that it must by no means be passed over that already before Augustine's age, and at the beginning of the fourth century of the Church, Armenia and especially Paphlagonia were undermined by such errors of Manes.
201:24
Id non tantum evincunt Manetis pseudoapostolorum inibi habitæ prædicationes, vel exitiales et venenatæ illæ scripturæ, quas Thomas, Agapius, cæterique, Constantio Chloro regnante, undequaque disseminaverant: sed ejus rei præterea certissima suppediant testimonia Gangrensis concilii Acta, quæ adhuc supersunt. Ad eam itaque synodum quindecim tantum episcopi, una cum magno Ossio Cordubensi, S. Silvestri papæ tempore convenere, paulo autequam primum generale Nicænum concilium cogeretur.
This is proved not only by the preachings of Manes's false apostles held there, or those deadly and venomous writings which Thomas, Agapius, and the rest had disseminated everywhere while Constantius Chlorus reigned; but moreover the most certain testimonies of the Acts of the Council of Gangra, which still survive, supply proof of this matter. To that synod, then, only fifteen bishops, together with the great Hosius of Cordova, came together in the time of St. Sylvester the Pope, a little before the first general Council of Nicaea was convened.
201:25
Gangris præterea urbs Paphlagoniæ est, in Asiæ Minoris parte constituta, in quam urbem laudati quindecim episcopi cum magno Ossio coiverunt, hæreseos Eustathianæ occasione, quæ ex variis, Manichæorum fontibus originem trahebat, et in varias Armeniæ regiones maximo cum catholicæ religionis detrimento grassabatur. Id potissimum cum ex eorumdem Gangrensium PP. Synodica, tum ex uno et viginti canonibus ibidem editis hand obscure intelligi potest. Synodicam quippe: Dominis honorabilibus consacerdotibus in Armenia constitutis inscripserunt. Et plerique ex canonibus in ea synodo editis, directe varios Manichaichæ sectæ errores taxant, impetunt, et anathemate feriunt;
再者,甘格拉是帕夫拉戈尼亞的一座城市,位於小亞細亞的部分,前述十五位主教連同偉大的何西烏聚集於此城,其緣由是尤斯塔提烏斯派(Eustathian)異端,此異端源出於摩尼派的各種源頭,並在亞美尼亞各處肆虐,給大公信仰帶來最大的損害。這一點可以毫不含糊地理解出來,既從同一群甘格拉諸教父的《會議書函》,又從在那裡頒佈的二十一條教規。因為他們把《會議書函》題為:「致設立於亞美尼亞的、可敬的諸主同工。」而在那會議上頒佈的大多數教規,都直接譴責、攻擊那摩尼派教派的各種謬誤,並施以絕罰;
Moreover, Gangra is a city of Paphlagonia, situated in the part of Asia Minor, into which city the aforesaid fifteen bishops with the great Hosius came together, on the occasion of the Eustathian heresy, which drew its origin from various Manichaean sources, and raged in various regions of Armenia with the greatest detriment to the Catholic religion. This can be understood not obscurely, both from the Synodical letter of the same Fathers of Gangra, and from the twenty-one canons published there. For they inscribed the Synodical letter: 'To the honorable lords, our fellow-priests established in Armenia.' And most of the canons published in that synod directly rebuke, assail, and strike with anathema various errors of the Manichaean sect;
201:26
as long ago Severinus Binius rightly and learnedly noted in his collection of the Councils. Of this kind certainly are those canons, either in which there is discourse concerning the lawful eating of meats, or in which the ecclesiastical rule of fasts is confirmed—canons whereby those are driven far away from the assembly of Catholics who despised the Lord's Day and the day of the Resurrection, spending it in mourning, grief, and fasting.
201:27
For these and similar things were decreed for the condemnation of Eustathius, the monk of Armenia, who had impiously drawn his errors from no other sources than those of the Manichaeans, and who on the same principle strove to overthrow and utterly abolish marriage, the begetting of children, the cultivation of virginity, the sacred assemblies established by the Church, the practice of fasting, the eating of meats and of animals, the possession of riches, the solemnities of feast-days and above all of the Lord's Day, and the other sacred rites approved by the Church. Without doubt, therefore, in the year 324 the Manichaean errors had so increased in Paphlagonia and in the region of Armenia, through the zeal of this same monk Eustathius, that in order to restrain them and to purge that plague the Fathers of Gangra had to assemble.
201:28
That the Acts of this synod were at length, for the hatred and destruction of the Manichaeans themselves, approved both by the first general Council of Nicaea with the assent of the Apostolic See — this is made plain not only by the legation of Ossius of Cordova on behalf of St. Sylvester the pope, but by the decrees of Symmachus and of Leo the Great, Roman pontiffs. Nor am I unaware that this legation of Ossius of Cordova on behalf of the Apostolic See at the Council of Gangra has been called into doubt not only by Peter de Marca and by Pagi, but has been absolutely and altogether denied. And chiefly for this reason, that his name occurs in the Acts which survive to be read not in the first, but in the fourteenth place among the names of the other bishops.
201:29
But in settling questions of this kind it is not always helpful to derive the prerogatives of bishops from the order in which their names are recorded in the codices — as we ourselves shall show, against Tillemont and others, concerning Britto, bishop of Trier, in the history of the Priscillianists. For sometimes through the error of copyists the codices too have been corrupted, or at least the genuine order of those same bishops could have been disturbed. Yet for a twofold reason I judge that this contention must now be avoided. The first is drawn from our own aim in composing this history. For we are not among those who, clinging to doubtful and very obscure matters, seek to assert and vindicate the rights of the Apostolic See.
201:30
For it would be exceedingly unbecoming and base, in a matter so certain and so weighty as that concerning the judicial power and rights of the Apostolic See — which shine forth clearer than light through all the ages of the Church — to indulge one's own fancies, to rest merely upon conjectures, to wander off the stage, and to bring into question those matters which plainly do not sufficiently pertain to the cause at hand. Since, therefore, that synod was merely provincial, and its canons obtained force and approval only from the assent of the Apostolic See — as the very collectors of the councils also admit — what will it matter to us whether Ossius of Cordova there performed a legation on behalf of the Apostolic See? 7.

The other reason is drawn from our own fairness toward a most illustrious and most learned man. For when here at Rome, a few years ago, in the solemn Pontifical Academy of the Councils, in the presence of our most holy lord Pope Benedict XIV, with the great applause of the whole literary assembly, he set forth and elucidated with the highest erudition each of the obscure and difficult questions which have long since been raised — and can hereafter be raised by students of criticism — concerning the date, the canons, the authority, and the confirmation of the Council of Gangra, the Most Reverend Father...

...namely Antoninus Bremond, a distinguished member of the Dominican family and a notable theologian in the Casanatense Library, and now Master General of the whole Order of Preachers — who out of the singular kindness of his heart embraces us with the greatest love — treated and illustrated these things; so that at present it is by no means permitted to enter upon discourse concerning the same matters. For in this lucubration of his, as in others, he has won for himself the assent of all the learned; and such indeed that we may promise to ourselves, by the common wishes of all, that a work of this kind will one day be made public. But since we too, in the same year, on the ninth day before the Kalends...

Maii in eadem pontificia Academia theologicam habuerimus de iisdem Gangrensibus canonibus dissertationem, hanc tamquam appendicem Manichaicæ historiæ lectori subjiciemus cap. Ultimo hujus libri. 1.Quemadmodum Manichæo necato hujus disci- poli et sectateres huc illucque per diversas, cum Orientis, tum Occidentis, provincias hanc hæresim propagaverint, præcedenti nostro cap. satis superque arbitror exploratum. Quia tamen ejusmodi nefarræ religionis propugnatore, non verbis et prædicationibus dumtaxat insistebant, ut ad dogamtum perversitatem rudium atque illitteratorum hominum ingenia traherent et perducerent;
...of May, in the same Pontifical Academy delivered a theological dissertation concerning these same canons of Gangra, we shall append it to the reader as an appendix to the Manichaean history, in the last chapter of this book. 1. In what manner, after Manes had been put to death, his disciples and followers propagated this heresy hither and thither through the various provinces of both the East and the West, I judge to have been sufficiently and more than sufficiently made clear in our preceding chapter. Yet because the champions of this wicked religion did not rest upon words and preaching alone, so as to draw and lead the minds of untaught and unlettered men to the perversity of their dogmas...

...but also made use of the aid of many harmful books, in the reading of which, if incautious men expended their effort, being ensnared as though by some enticement, they bound their souls fast to those same errors — we have therefore resolved for the present to indicate these books in few words. Nor indeed do we think that discourse is to be entered upon only concerning the works of Scythianus, which he dying left to Terebinthus, and which Manes himself recooked and interpolated; since we have already, in the earlier chapters of the preceding book of this History, spoken of those same four volumes of Scythianus, heaped together out of the fables of the pagan philosophers and out of the filthiest tatters of the ancient heresiarchs. 2.
201:35
Ne igitur nos acta iterum agere velle videamur, ad reliquos hujus sectæ scriptores et adeorum describenda opera nostra se vertit oratio; in quorum numerum potissimum Thomam illum rejiciendum esse arbitramur, cuiquoddam Evangelium aprocryphum et supposititium veteres omnes adjudicarunt. Pauca tamer de hoc opere dicenda occurrunt, si vetustiores omnes scriptores pervolvamus. De eo quidem veluti opere a Manichæis confecto horumque referto fabulis men tionem habuerunt. Sed nullus alicubi, quem viderim disertius atque expressius blasphemias inibi contentas indicavit. Qua in re illud potissimum esset investigandum: an Thomas iste, hoc impietatis portentum ex integro composuerit;
Lest, therefore, we seem to wish to do over again what has been done, our discourse turns itself to the remaining writers of this sect and to describing their works; among whose number we judge that that Thomas above all must be reckoned, to whom all the ancients attributed a certain apocryphal and spurious Gospel. Yet only a few things concerning this work present themselves to be said, if we peruse all the more ancient writers. Of it indeed they made mention as of a work composed by the Manichaeans and stuffed with their fables. But no one, so far as I have seen, has anywhere indicated more clearly and expressly the blasphemies contained therein. In this matter this above all would have to be investigated: whether that Thomas composed this monster of impiety entirely on his own...
201:36
vel potius an nacto sibi primum Scuthiani Evangelio, huic suum nomen inciderit, auctis deinde atque exaggerates quæ in eo continebantur. At vero ejusmodi definire quæstionem quis auderet, quamvis posterius probabilius videatur? Siquidem veteres, non duo, sed unum dum- taxat Manichæos habuisse Evangelium testati sunt, illudque perperam sub Thomæ apostolic nomine circumferre conates fuisse, quamvis Caveus, nescio qua ductus ratione, allud Scythiani et aliud Thomæ Evangelium fuisse allirmaverit. Minus difficile tamen erit conjicere quibus laciniis atque blasphemiis istud Evangelium refertum fuisset.
...or rather whether, having first obtained for himself the Gospel of Scythianus, he inscribed his own name upon it, and then augmented and exaggerated the things contained in it. But who would dare to determine a question of this kind, although the latter seems more probable? Since the ancients testified that the Manichaeans had not two, but only one Gospel, and that they wrongly attempted to circulate it under the name of Thomas the apostle — although Cave, led by I know not what reasoning, has affirmed that the Gospel of Scythianus was one and that of Thomas another. It will nevertheless be less difficult to conjecture with what tatters and blasphemies that Gospel was stuffed.
201:37
For since it dealt chiefly with the Nativity, deeds, preaching, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ the Lord — which are the dogmas and mysteries of the Catholic faith, and which they so boldly assailed — it will be quite likely that every death-bearing venom was scattered there which would subvert and abolish the chief foundations of our religion. They denied, as we have seen, on the authority of Augustine, that Christ was born of the Virgin, and, not confessing that His flesh was true but feigned, contended thereby that His passion was false and that there was no resurrection.
201:38
That impious things also concerning the mission and coming of the Holy Spirit were contained in that Gospel, to corroborate another chief error of Manes, Cyril of Jerusalem indicated not obscurely, discoursing of this in his book, and warning Catholics to guard themselves against reading it. And this book of diabolical impiety we understand to have been rejected among the apocryphal scriptures not only by the decrees of the Roman pontiffs — namely of Siricius, Innocent, and Pope Gelasius — but St. Pope Leo the Great decreed that it should be utterly removed and burned in the fire.
201:39
For concerning these and similar writings of the Manichaeans and Priscillianists the holy pontiff Leo spoke thus, admonishing Catholics indeed in weighty speech, lest by a certain feigned appearance of piety, which writings of this kind seemed to display, they should allow themselves to be led to the reading of them. For although (he says) there are in them certain things which seem to have an appearance of piety, they are nevertheless never empty of poisons, and through the enticements of fables they work this latently: that, having seduced men by the narration of marvels, they may entangle them in the snares of every error. To which decrees of the Apostolic See at length, when the Fathers of the Council of Nicaea gave heed, they said, chiefly concerning this Gospel of Thomas:
201:40
To these things (for they are speaking of the adulterine writings which were once circulated under the name of Paul) the Manichaeans have foisted in a Gospel according to Thomas, which the Catholic Church deservedly abhors as impious. To all which we at last subjoin this one thing: namely, that the Gospel of Thomas differs greatly from that book which was entitled The Revelation of the Apostle Thomas. For in the same Gelasian decree there is mention of both as of two distinct books, although nowhere is it indicated that the latter book, namely The Revelation of the Apostle Thomas, came forth from the Manichaean workshop. That Turibius, bishop of Astorga, was of this opinion, however, his letter to St. Leo the Great makes plain not obscurely. For in chapter...
201:41
...5, discoursing of the apocryphal books either composed or infected by that chief prince Manes and his disciples, he specially enumerated the Acts of St. Thomas, and things like these, from which (he says) the Manichaeans and Priscillianists, or whatever sect is akin to them, strive to confirm their whole heresy. 3. Besides one, or two, volumes of Gospels — impiously written as it were after the model and imitation of the Catholics — the Manichaeans had another book, namely of Epistles. And it was the belief of the ancients that this too came forth chiefly from the workshop of Manes. Of this volume, or medley of Epistles, mention occurs both in Goar and Peter of Sicily, and in the author of the Coteler and Toll formula.
201:42
Ex hoc Epistolarum corpore procul dubio (ad Guillelmus Cave) erat famesa illa epistola quam fundamentum vocabant Manichæi, quam toties citat Augustinus de Natura boni, et in actis cum Felice. Qui et contra ejusmodi epistolam integrum librum conseripsit, quo, prioribus partibus ejusdem epistolæ Manichæi rejectis, ostendit ipsum pro manifesta, quam pollicebatur, et pro certa congnitione non nisi incerta et absorda deliramenta insanis suis sectatoribus proposuisse. At contra Manichaica secta hanc epistolam veluti universæ fidei suæ promptuarium venerabatur;
從這書信文集中,無疑地(據威廉·凱夫所言)出自那封著名的書信,摩尼教徒稱之為《根基》,奧古斯丁在《論善的本性》以及《駁斐利克斯行傳》中一再引用它。他還針對此類書信寫了一整本書,在其中他駁斥了摩尼那封書信較前的部分,指明摩尼向他那些瘋狂的追隨者所提出的,並非他所應許的明白知識與確切的認知,而不過是些不確定而荒謬的囈語。但摩尼教派卻相反地把這封書信奉為他們全部信仰的寶庫;
From this body of Epistles without doubt (according to William Cave) was that famous epistle which the Manichaeans called the Foundation, which Augustine so often cites in his work On the Nature of the Good, and in the Acts against Felix. He also wrote an entire book against an epistle of this kind, in which, having rejected the earlier parts of that epistle of Manes, he showed that Manes had set before his insane followers, in place of the manifest knowledge which he promised and the certain knowledge, nothing but uncertain and absurd ravings. But on the contrary the Manichaean sect venerated this epistle as the very storehouse of their whole faith;
201:43
so that, on the authority of the same Augustine, as often as it was read before the hearers, with head bowed they were wont to say Amen, as though by the reading of this illumination they rendered thanks to its most wicked author. Now the opening of this epistle was this: Manichaeus, apostle of Jesus Christ by the providence of God the Father. These are the wholesome words from the perennial and living fountain. A similar opening we have already met in the epistle to Marcellus, as the Latin fragments of Archelaus recounted above have it, and Epiphanius, in heresy 66. But that all his epistles gathered in that codex had the same opening, Augustine alone among the rest testified, in book XIII, chapter 4, against Faustus, addressing them thus:
201:44
For your Manichaeus was not a prophet of the Christ who was to come, since he calls himself His apostle — with the deceit indeed of a most shameless man. And a little further down he adds: Yet all his epistles begin thus: Manichaeus, apostle of Jesus Christ. But of yet other epistles of Manes William Cave makes mention on page 92. In the third place, then, we judge that the Book of Mysteries must be reviewed, which the Manichaeans themselves had carefully composed to overthrow the Law and to blot out all the prophecies of the ancient prophets. For from Goar, William Cave recites a certain fragment in which an Anathema was pronounced upon a book of this kind.
201:45
That this too was one of the books of Scythianus, but enormously augmented by Manes and interpolated in countless places, so that he might indulge his own fancies, the same author asserts. Wherefore that it was divided into twenty-two parts in alphabetical order, written in the Syriac and Palmyrene tongue, Tollius declared. These books were then followed by a fourth, which some — from certain corrupt Greek manuscript copies — have quite wrongly testified ought to be entitled The Traffic of All Things. But that it had another title, William Cave alone among the rest noted in his Literary History, both from the writings of Timothy of Constantinople and from other more notable ancient copies.
201:46
Wherefore, relying on various conjectures, he showed from the arguments which it contained that this little book had rather received its own denomination, and that it was called: On the difference of those who come to the pure faith. And that the Manichaeans were wont falsely to boast of the purity of their own faith has already been proved a little before, from Augustine, in the preceding pages, since indeed they called themselves Catharists, that is, purifiers. 4.
201:47
Now that we may come to those things which, after the formula of Goar, Cotelerius and Tollius published, there presents itself to us another book called Apocryphal, in which (as Cave says) it is probable that the more hidden rites of the Manichaeans, their conjuring tricks, and the execrable mysteries of their religion were contained — the doctrine of which rites was handed down only to the initiates and to those steeped in their unspeakable orgies. This conjecture of Cave we by no means disapprove. For indeed the school of the Manichaeans, besides those common dogmas which it published abroad among its hearers, also taught and maintained other things, hidden and more secret, which became known only to the chiefs of this sect and to its principal masters.
201:48
Id quidem in sua hæreseos ejuratione, Turbonem non obscure testatum fuisse, jam ipsi præcedenti libro cap. 14 annotavimus.
That Turbo indeed testified this not obscurely in his abjuration of the heresy, we ourselves have already noted in the preceding book, chapter 14. And it is probable that in that book were described all the profane rites, sacrilegious ceremonies, fasts, and prayers which the Manichaean worshippers of the Bema used when celebrating their sacred and festal solemnities. Therefore in the Coteler formula the books of such rites and conjuring tricks are indicated in these words: That all things which are done and celebrated by them in their sacred rites, and which are contained in the Manichaean or conjuring books, are to be condemned. But to all these they added certain interpretations, called the Commentaries of the sayings and memorable deeds of Manes.
201:49
Among the Manichaean writers too a not inconsiderable place was held by that Addas, of whom we have also spoken above. He therefore composed a single book called Modius, which was stuffed with many axioms and philosophical principles, which were recognized even at first glance as utterly foreign and at war with the common notions implanted in nature. Of which sort surely were those by which they affirmed that men are necessarily led to sin by a certain evil author, existing without beginning and contrary to God. Or those others which they pronounced to the utmost insult of divine Providence, impiously contending, namely, that this visible world is by no means subject to divine rule and governance.
201:50
Hæc, inquam, nefario diabolicoque eo libro contenta fuisse Titi Bastrensis volumina conscripta perspocue ostendunt. Is enim sanctissimus Arabiæ episcopus, auctore Heracleano episcopo Chalcedonensi, apud Photium, omnes sui studii nervos intendit, ut illius libri blasphemias, errores rejiceret et subverteret. 5.
But the author of this book had also striven to make plain that the two Testaments, the Old, namely, and the New, are at war with each other, on the basis of certain apparent contradictions, or rather allegories and mysteries. And again, discoursing anew of the New Testament, he tried especially to show that the errors of the Manichaean sect had derived from it all their force, strength, and foundations. That these things, I say, were contained in that wicked and diabolical book, the volumes composed by Titus of Bostra clearly show. For that most holy bishop of Arabia — on the authority of Heracleon, bishop of Chalcedon, as reported in Photius — bent all the sinews of his effort to reject and overthrow the blasphemies and errors of that book. 5.
201:51
Curious, however, are the things which William Cave has recounted concerning Aristocritus, a not least disciple and writer of Manes. Who, although he did not fear to traduce his own teacher as an evil man, nevertheless, clinging to his dogmas, published a work in which he tried to show that the doctrine of the Jews, the Gentiles, the Christians, and the Manichaeans was one and the same. That this kind of argument Addas too had indicated in his book, is clear from what has been said before. Moreover, that the earlier chiefs, masters, elect, and hearers of the Manichaean sect made use not of these books alone, we understand from various monuments of the ancients.
201:52
Timotheus enim Constantinopolitanus presbyter, libri Precum meminit, in quo precationum et præstigiorum formulæ continebantur. Quare pœnitentes Manichæi in ejurandis erroribus Orationum librum quoque anathematizare juhebantur.
For Timothy, presbyter of Constantinople, makes mention of a Book of Prayers, in which were contained the formulas of prayers and of conjurings. Wherefore the penitent Manichaeans, in abjuring their errors, were also bidden to anathematize the Book of Prayers. Of which kind too are all the other apocryphal writings described in the Gelasian decree, which the ancient writers were persuaded had come forth either from Manes or from his disciples, as may be seen in Cave, in the Novatian century, page 92. He likewise reviewed two other writers of this unspeakable sect, of uncertain date, whom he asserts to have been among the more celebrated.
201:53
Horum prior est Agapius, scriptor (ait) satis obscurus, cujus utpote, præter Photium, nullus (quod sciam) veterum meminit. Caveo Tillemontius suffragatus est, qui Photii testimonio pariter adhærens, Agapium Eunomio facit coævum; huncque suis scriptis exagitasse ac perstrinxisse affirmat, quamvis ad Manichæorum partes turpiter ille defecisset. Hinc tamen inter utrumque aliquod dissidium. Nam Caveus altius res repetens, et ad ea quæ de Agapio Petrus Siculus scripserat animadvertens, aliter Photii testimonium explic posse contendit. Agapium quidem unum fuisse ex duodecim Manetis discipulis, qui librum confecit Heptalogum dictum, jam eodem Petro Siculo ipsi annotavimus.
The first of these is Agapius, a writer (he says) sufficiently obscure, since — apart from Photius — no one (so far as I know) of the ancients makes mention of him. Tillemont sided with Cave, who, likewise clinging to the testimony of Photius, makes Agapius contemporary with Eunomius, and affirms that he assailed and censured him in his writings, although he had basely defected to the party of the Manichaeans. Hence, however, there is some disagreement between the two. For Cave, tracing the matter further back and giving heed to what Peter of Sicily had written concerning Agapius, contends that the testimony of Photius can be explained otherwise. That Agapius was indeed one of the twelve disciples of Manes, who composed a book called the Heptalogue, we have already noted from the same Peter of Sicily.
201:54
How, then, could it come about that he, still surviving in the age of Eunomius, sharpened his pen against him and his errors? For from the year in which the heresy of Manes became known as to be condemned, to the fall of Eunomius the notary of Aetius, eighty and more years flowed by. Which interval of time surely can by no means cohere with these two things: namely, that one and the same Agapius should have been among the twelve chief disciples of Manes, and should have lived so long as to be able to assail Eunomius with his writings. This grave rock, which William Cave foresaw, he strove with much diligence to guard against.
201:55
Sed utrumque contingere potuisse asseverans, alias et alias conjecturas tum ex Epiphanio, tum ex Cyrillo Hierosolymitano, quas ad rem suam facere arbitratur, adducit, lectorem eas perpendere admonet, 118 atque tandem nihilin hac parte pro certo statuere velle definevit. Cujus quidem rei statum, sive rationem diligentius inquirere nunc nobis otium handquaquam est, cum plane interciderint, aut saltem prorsum lateant vetustiera illa monumenta quæ ejusmodi quæstionem dirimant. 6. De reliquis igitur Agapii Operibus, aliqua dum- taxat dicenda supererunt, cui landatus Photius duo alia Opera adjudicavit.Horum alterum ln viginti duos est dispertitum libellos;
但他既主張二者皆有可能發生,便援引種種臆測——時而取自伊皮法尼,時而取自耶路撒冷的區利羅——他認為這些臆測有助於其目的,並勸告讀者權衡它們,最終則決定在這一部分不斷定任何確切之事。至於這件事的實情或其理據,如今我們實在毫無閒暇更勤勉地探究,因為那些能裁決此類問題的較古文獻顯然已然湮滅,或至少完全隱沒不見了。六、至於阿加庇烏斯其餘的著作,便只剩寥寥數語可說——受人稱讚的弗提烏斯把另外兩部作品歸於他。其中一部被分為二十二本小書;
But asserting that both could have happened, he brings forward various conjectures — now from Epiphanius, now from Cyril of Jerusalem — which he judges to make for his purpose, and admonishes the reader to weigh them, and at last has determined to lay down nothing for certain in this part. Of which matter indeed, to inquire more diligently into the state, or the reasoning, we now have no leisure at all, since those more ancient monuments which would settle a question of this kind have plainly perished, or at least lie utterly hidden. 6. Of the remaining works of Agapius, then, only a few things will remain to be said, to whom the praised Photius attributed two other works. Of these, one is divided into twenty-two little books;
201:56
alterum vero centum et duo capita complectebatur, et utrumque Uraniæ cuidam, sectæ suæ mulierculæ studiique sui sociæ, ipse auctor noncupavit. Si curiosius præterea ex Photio sciscitemur cujus generis argumenta his in libris Agapius explicaverit, illud evidentissime patebit, sola nefaria ac fabulosa commenta iis in Operibus contenta fuisse, quæ ex Turbonis confessione et Augustini testimoniis in superioribus luculentius ipsi explicavimus, in quibus expendendis nunc iterum immorari supervacaneum ducimus.
the other comprised a hundred and two chapters, and both the author himself dedicated to a certain Urania, a little woman of his sect and a partner in his pursuit. If, moreover, we inquire more curiously from Photius what kind of arguments Agapius unfolded in these books, this will most evidently appear: that only wicked and fabulous fabrications were contained in those works — the very things which, from the confession of Turbo and the testimonies of Augustine, we have above more clearly explained; in weighing which we now judge it superfluous to linger again.
201:57
But into this same order of writers of uncertain date William Cave judged that a certain Alexander must be reckoned, whom the ancients called the Lycopolitan, from Lycus, one of the cities of the Egyptian Thebaid. He was indeed at first a Gentile in worship. But then, when the Manichaeans had betaken themselves into those regions of Egypt, he went over to their camp. At last, however, having abjured this wicked heresy, he professed the Catholic religion. Now before he purged himself of the stain of this heresy, he composed a book On the Tenets of the Manichaeans, which he knew excellently well and intimately; in which, on the same authority of Cave, he accurately expounds their inner meaning, and solidly refutes the unsound dogmas of this sect by reasonings drawn from the secret places of philosophy.
201:58
The same Cave censures his style of writing as somewhat harsh and rather difficult; nor did he dare to determine his date for certain, although he suspects that he was not far removed from the times of Manes, since the same Alexander affirms that he received those dogmas from those who had conversed familiarly with the man. Which words we judge must be referred to Papus and Thomas, disciples of Manes, since he makes mention of these two only. Finally, various things gathered here and there concerning the works and date of this Alexander, William Cave has reported — things indeed little consistent with one another, which are passed over by us, lest we dwell upon uncertain and doubtful matters. 7.
201:59
It quidem ex priori libro Retractationum, cap. 13, innotescit, quo nimirum, Opera a se ipso conscripta recensens, cum adhuc presbyteratus ordine fungeretur ait:
Now our present undertaking demands that we speak of Adimantus, a celebrated disciple indeed of the Manichaean sect (whom Cave, as we have seen, once confused with Addas). Concerning his writings and deeds Augustine has more than once discoursed in his works; but he engages with him in such a way as to describe the man as having departed from this light, and only assails and strives to overthrow his writings. This indeed becomes known from the first book of the Retractations, chapter 13, in which — reviewing the works composed by himself, while he still discharged the order of the presbyterate — he says:
201:60
At the same time there came into my hands certain disputations of Adimantus, who had been a disciple of Manes, which he wrote against the Law and the Prophets, as though he tried to demonstrate that the evangelical and apostolic writings were contrary to them. The holy doctor therefore indicates to us the title and aim of this Adamantic book of his; but since he there calls the writer a disciple of Manes, and speaks of him as of a man long since departed from life, we can scarcely doubt both that he heard Manes, and that, through the action of his sponsor, namely Addas, he obtained at least a place among the disciples of the second rank. But of the works of Adimantus the same Augustine also makes mention in his book against Faustus.
201:61
Primo quidem cum 119 sub istius nomine verba ponens, hunc Faustum, veluti de sua, Manetis et Adimanti doctrina gloriantem, quasi in scenam venire compellit, qui elatus insania audacius affirmabat: Satis superque jam in lucem traductis erroribus ac Judaicæ superstitionis simul, et semichristianorum abunde detecta fallacia, a dilectissimo, scilicet, et solo nobis post beatum Patrem nostrum Manichæum studioso Adimanto, non abs re visum est. Ex quibus sane Fausti verbis, non tantum patefactum est consuevisse Manichæos, catholicæ religionis cultores, tamquam fallaciis et pravis dogmatibus deceptos postulare;
他起初把言語置於那人名下,彷彿迫使這浮士德登上舞台,儼然誇耀著他自己的、摩尼的以及阿迪曼圖斯的教義——此人因瘋狂而昂然,更大膽地肯定說:如今謬誤既已充分乃至過分充分地被揭露,猶太迷信與半基督徒二者的欺詐也已被充分揭穿——這乃是藉著那位最蒙愛的、也是在我們有福的父摩尼之後唯一為我們熱心的阿迪曼圖斯——如此行也不算不合宜。從浮士德這番話中,無疑不僅表明了摩尼教徒習於指控大公信仰的敬拜者受了欺詐與敗壞教條的蒙蔽;
First indeed, putting words under that man's name, he as it were compels this Faustus to come upon the stage, boasting as it were of his own, of Manes', and of Adimantus' doctrine — who, elated with madness, more boldly affirmed: Now that errors have been sufficiently and more than sufficiently brought to light, and the fallacy both of Jewish superstition and of the half-Christians abundantly uncovered — by the most beloved, namely, and the only one zealous for us after our blessed Father Manichaeus, Adimantus — it has not seemed amiss. From which words of Faustus surely it was made plain not only that the Manichaeans were wont to arraign the worshippers of the Catholic religion as deceived by fallacies and depraved dogmas;
201:62
sed et Adimanti scriptis insistere voluisse, quem tamquam alterum post Manetem illius profanæ sectæ antesignanum venerabantur. Iterum quoque idem Augustinus Faustum exagitat, quod ex ficto quodam, ab Adimanto adducto, Scripturarum conflictu, turpius errasset vel circa hominum, brutorum et vegetabilium substantiam, quorum vitam ejusdem esse naturæ Adimantus post Manetem fabalabatur;
而且還表明他們願意執守阿迪曼圖斯的著作,把他奉為繼摩尼之後那褻瀆教派的第二位旗手。同一位奧古斯丁又再度攻擊浮士德,因為他從阿迪曼圖斯所援引的某種虛構的聖經衝突中,更卑劣地陷入了謬誤,或是關乎人、牲畜與植物的本質——阿迪曼圖斯繼摩尼之後,捏造說它們的生命屬同一種本性;
but also that they wished to cling to the writings of Adimantus, whom they venerated as, after Manes, the second standard-bearer of that profane sect. Again too the same Augustine assails Faustus, because from a certain feigned conflict of the Scriptures, adduced by Adimantus, he had erred more basely, either concerning the substance of men, of brutes, and of vegetables — whose life Adimantus, after Manes, fabled to be of the same nature;
201:63
or when he reasoned about the passage of souls and their migration into new bodies, or finally when, from the Scriptures of the New and Old Testament, he reasoned about the vain and superstitious choosing of foods. For that Faustus imbibed these errors chiefly from the volumes of Adimantus, and from them championed horrendous blasphemies, the same Augustine demonstrated more clearly in his sixth book. At last the holy doctor inveighs more harshly against Adimantus himself, refuting that error by which he taught that even rational beings, that is the souls of men, could be thrust into the bodies of beasts. What then will he (Adimantus, namely) do about so great a crime, if ever he has wearied a slow beast of burden with blows or urged it on with the bridle, in which perchance the soul of his father may have been?
201:64
Not to mention that he could even have killed his own parents among the lice and fleas, from the slaying of which those men do not refrain. Augustine had moreover learned that some Manichaeans, hard pressed by these and similar reasonings, were wont to deny that human souls could be revolved down to those tiniest of living things. Which evasion the holy doctor readily conceding, took from it an occasion to press Adimantus and the other Manichaeans more and more. Wherefore, progressing from the smaller to the somewhat larger, he mocked them quite wittily, and reasoned thus learnedly. For what does it profit them that they sometimes deny, etc.?
201:65
For they deny this lest they be held guilty of so many slayings, or be compelled to spare lice, fleas, and bedbugs, and to endure such great annoyances from them without any license to kill them. But that they may be still more vehemently pressed, Augustine therefore adds: Why can a human soul be revolved into a little fox, and cannot be revolved into a weasel, since the cub of a little fox is perhaps even smaller than a large weasel? Then, that he may mock their sayings still more fully, he closes the argument with these words: Then if it can into a weasel, why can it not into a mouse? And if it can into that, why can it not into a gecko? And if it can into that, why can it not into a locust? Or into a bee, or a flea, or come to anything much tinier?
201:66
Ex qua quidem disserendi ratione, Adimantum, cæterosque Manichæos innumerabilium homicidiorum reos fieri demonstrat, quippe qui cum superstitiosæ et nugaloræ huic credulitati sive dictamini insisterent, eorum conscientia hisce maximus erroribus impedita gravius laborabat. 8. Sed alterius libri a se ipso contra eumdem editi idem meminit Augustinus; in quo primum positis Admanti verbis, iisdem S. Pater suam reddiderat 120 responsionem.
From which manner of arguing he demonstrates that Adimantus and the other Manichaeans are made guilty of innumerable homicides, inasmuch as, since they clung to this superstitious and trifling credulity or dictate, their conscience, hindered by these greatest errors, labored the more grievously. 8. Now in this book against Adimantus, Augustine is wholly occupied in reconciling with one another the sentences of the Scriptures which the same Adimantus — contending that both Testaments could not be from one and the same author — had scraped together concerning the Old and New Testament as though mutually contrary. But the same Augustine makes mention of another book published by himself against the same man; in which, the words of Adimantus having first been set down, the holy Father had rendered his own response to them.
201:67
This work, he says, I gathered into a single volume, and in it I replied to certain questions not once but a second time, because what I had answered first had been lost and was found again only after I had already answered a second time. Some indeed of these same questions I resolved in popular ecclesiastical sermons, while to certain others I have not yet replied.
201:68
But if anyone, desiring to be more fully instructed in these matters, should inquire of us to which ecclesiastical and popular sermons Augustine wished here chiefly to appeal, to such a questioner we shall at once reply that it is above all in the twelfth sermon that he refutes the slanderous charges of Adimantus. In that sermon, still wishing to treat of the frauds and deceits of the Manichaeans, he inveighs against Adimantus, who, having zealously corrupted and distorted the testimony of the Apostle Paul, strove to argue that neither the princes, nor the powers, nor the virtues had known God. In order therefore to overturn a calumny of this kind, he says: But first I would like to ask these men where Adimantus read this in the Apostle — for this writer is the author of such calumnies.
201:69
I would wish, then, that he should say where he read the Apostle testifying and confirming, as he claims, that neither the princes, nor the powers, nor the virtues knew God — whereas the Lord says of the very angels of the men who believe in Him that they daily behold the face of the Father. These things, therefore, and others of the same kind, Augustine brings forward, evidently to reconcile that famous testimony of Job, which we read in chapter 1, with those other words of Matthew, chapter 5, verse 8, upon which Adimantus insisted, in order to introduce and press a contradiction between the two Testaments.
201:70
But since concerning this Adimantus nothing else worthy of note occurs either in the works of Augustine or in the writings of others, we must now, passing him by, at length necessarily turn our discourse to Fortunatus the presbyter, likewise a follower of the Manichaeans and a defender of their doctrine. He, then, according to Possidius, being stained with a defilement of this kind, when this infamous and wicked heresy was spreading more widely through the regions of Africa, so that it corrupted and undermined almost the whole city and province of Hippo, labored all too zealously. And so, while he lived and dwelt in that same place, the poison of this heresy grew up so quickly in a short time that very many of the citizens and foreigners of that city were tainted by this pestilential contagion.
201:71
Meanwhile (says the same Possidius) the citizens of Hippo and the Christian foreigners, both Catholics and also Donatists, approach Augustine the presbyter and demand that he meet with that man — namely Fortunatus, the presbyter of the Manichaeans, whom they believed to be learned — and dispute with him concerning the Law. And when these things were being transacted among the Africans, chiefly in the famous city of Hippo, Arcadius Augustus and Rufinus, most distinguished men, were holding their second consulship, and it fell in the year of Christ 382. Wherefore the holy presbyter Augustine, that he might indulge the wishes of his soul, by no means refused to undertake the task offered to him; nay rather, he showed himself wholly prepared to render an account to those demanding it concerning matters of faith.
201:72
When therefore matters were thus arranged, the Manichaeans begged Fortunatus to undergo the encounter with Augustine, lest the cause of their common sect should be endangered. But Fortunatus himself, who once at Carthage had known Augustine laboring under the same Manichaean disease, feared to engage with him. Yet at length, compelled and shamed chiefly by the insistence of his own party, he promised that he would come at close quarters and would undertake the contest of disputation. So on the fifth day before the Kalends of the seventh month, at Hippo, in the baths of Sossius, the disputation between Augustine and Fortunatus was begun. To hear it a great multitude of people had assembled, with learned and inquisitive men standing by above all, who, as usually happens, favored the two parties.
201:73
Tum vero mutariorum tabulis apertis.
Then indeed, when the notaries' tablets had been opened, Augustine began the disputation; and the question turned chiefly upon whence evil comes. On this point, when he, the champion of Catholic doctrine, was explaining that the evil of man had arisen from the free choice of the will, while the other — namely Fortunatus — was striving to persuade that the nature of evil was coeternal with God, but in the disputation of the final day was little consistent with himself, he confessed that he found nothing to say against us.
201:74
But, failing in his reply, he declared at last that he would confer with his elders about those things which he could not refute, and, if perchance they should not sufficiently satisfy him concerning these matters, he promised that he would take counsel for his own soul. This Possidius narrates in the passage cited; yet of this matter we are made more certain by the very words of that same presbyter Fortunatus, pronounced before all in the disputation of the second day, which words, being taken down by the notaries, were moreover faithfully recorded in writing in the ecclesiastical tablets, as may be seen also at the close of the disputation of the second day, which stands together with the former in volume eight of the works of St. Augustine.
201:75
In the meantime, let no one suppose that Fortunatus the Manichaean, overwhelmed with so great shame, modesty, and disgrace, thought of coming to his senses from his errors, or wished thereafter to give his name to the Catholics. Into such a resolve surely any man of sound mind would at once have fallen, who understood the affairs of his own faith to be tottering and led to ruin. But that Fortunatus, affected by so great confusion, having set out from the city of Hippo, returned to it no more, nor yet did he become a Catholic. Of this Fortunatus, the Manichaean presbyter, Augustine, so far as I know, makes mention nowhere. There exists only a certain letter of his written to another Manichaean presbyter, whom the Maurist Fathers in the latest edition of Augustine surmised to have been Felix of the congregation.
201:76
This Fortunatus, therefore, Augustine — now raised to the bishopric of Hippo — addressed in these words: And so I charge you in the name of Christ, that if you are ready, resolve the question in which your predecessor Fortunatus failed; and he departed hence in such wise that he did not return, unless, after conferring in disputation with his own, he should find what he might reply in answer, disputing with the brethren. From these things, therefore, it is clear that this Manichaean presbyter, who had succeeded Fortunatus, was roused and challenged by Augustine to resolve that same question, in which his predecessor had failed all too shamefully.
201:77
11. Fortunatum hunc presbyterum Faustus, gente Afer, civitate Milevitanus, Manichaicæ sectæ episcopus, excipit, qui anno quadrigentesimo floruit. Hujus ingenium, studia, animi dotes, et scripta inter cæteros unus Guillelmus Cave descripsit dicens: Vir fuit eloquio suavis, ingenio callidus loquax potius quam eloquens, sciolus magis quam solide doctus. Et rursus paulo infra subjicit: Volumen vero conscripsit adversus rectam Christianam fidem et catholicam veritatem.
He slipped away from the city of Hippo in such wise that he studiously feigned that he wished to confer with the other chiefs of the Manichaeans about the things that had been objected to him. This presbyter Fortunatus was succeeded by Faustus, an African by nation, a citizen of Milevis, a bishop of the Manichaean sect, who flourished in the four-hundredth year. His talent, studies, gifts of mind, and writings, among others, William Cave alone described, saying: He was a man sweet in speech, crafty in wit, talkative rather than eloquent, a smatterer rather than solidly learned. And again a little below he adds: He composed a volume against the right Christian faith and the Catholic truth.
201:78
Nihilominus tamen laudatus scriptor non satis accurate hujus libri argumentum descripsit. Nam Augustinus, qui Fausti Manechæi opus sedulo lustravit, libro n Retractationum, cap. 7, quid istud in se contineret his verbis explicavit dicens: Contra Faustum Manichæum blasphemantem Legem et Prophetas, et eorum Deum, et incarnationem Christi, Scripturas au- tem novi Testamenti, quibus convincitur, falsatas esse dicentem, scripst grande opus, verbis ejus propositis reddens responsiones meas. Hunc hominem quidem noverat Augustinus, qui, in suarum Confessionum sincero sacrificio, quemadmodum in Manichæorum sectam incidisset prolocuturus, ait:
Nevertheless, the aforesaid writer did not accurately enough describe the argument of this book. For Augustine, who diligently examined the work of Faustus the Manichaean, in Book Two of the Retractations, chapter seven, explained in these words what that book contained in itself, saying: Against Faustus the Manichaean, who blasphemed the Law and the Prophets and their God and the incarnation of Christ, and who said that the Scriptures of the New Testament, by which he is convicted, had been falsified, I wrote a great work, setting forth his words and rendering my replies. This man indeed Augustine had known, who, in the sincere sacrifice of his Confessions, about to relate how he had fallen into the sect of the Manichaeans, says:
201:79
Ejusmodi porro Faus i Mantchæi fama apud suos assectas valde pervulgata, jam dio desiderium in Augustinum eccitaverat eum docentem et disputantem audiendi. Nam si quandoque annorum novem spatio, quo errenti quasi animo S.
There had already come to Carthage a certain bishop of the Manichaeans, Faustus by name, a great snare of the devil, and many were entangled in it through the enticements of his smooth speech… for report had spoken of him to me beforehand, that he was most skilled in all honorable branches of learning and exceedingly well versed in the liberal disciplines. Now the fame of this Faustus the Manichaean, widely spread among his own adherents, had long since aroused in Augustine a desire to hear him teaching and disputing. For if at any time, in the space of nine years during which, as with a wandering mind, the holy…
201:80
the Father seemed to cling to this sect, being reduced merely into the class of hearers, not of the elect, he ran up against difficult knots; and if there were questions which the other men of that profane religion knew not how to resolve, they awaited, with all too outstretched longing, the coming of that Faustus, by whose arrival (he himself says) and shared conversation these matters, and any perhaps greater ones I might seek, would most readily and most clearly be unraveled for me. This indeed the other Manichaeans, when they engaged with Augustine on matters of faith, kept promising — as though the mysteries of that abominable sect had been revealed to Faustus the bishop alone. In the end, the fame of the Manichaean people of this kind deceived Augustine.
201:81
Indeed, when he came, I found (he says) a man agreeable and pleasant in words, prattling far more sweetly the very things which they are wont to say. But what did the most graceful cupbearer of more precious cups avail against my thirst? Augustine's ears had already been sated with such things, nor for that reason did they seem better to him because they were better spoken, nor true because eloquently expressed, nor the soul wise because the countenance was becoming and the discourse comely.
201:82
But descending to the particular deeds of that same Faustus, to his capacity for knowledge, to his understanding of divine and human things — how great and in what measure that man, so highly esteemed by his own, might prevail in these matters — when Augustine himself had tested this in various familiar encounters, he pronounced this final judgment concerning him. For when he had withdrawn from the opinion of those to whom he seemed prudent and wise, because he delighted them by his speaking, he writes:
201:83
After various familiar trials, therefore, I found the man devoid of the liberal disciplines, except grammar, and that too in the ordinary manner; and because he had read some orations of Tully and very few books of Seneca and certain works of the poets, and such volumes of his own sect as were written in Latin and in orderly fashion; and because there was a daily exercise of conversation, thence he was supplied with an eloquence which became more acceptable and more seductive by the governance of his wit and by a certain natural charm. Such gifts, then, of mind and body, which the other Manichaeans admired in Faustus the bishop, could not even gently soothe or seduce the genius of Augustine.
201:84
Nam postquam illi satis earum artium imperitus apparuit, quibus excellere et fama venditabat, et Augustinus ipse putaverat, is statim desperare cœpit posse Faustum aperire et dissolvere eas quæstiones in quibus, spectatis Mamchæorum fabulosis principiis, ejus animus nimis fluctuabat. Id præsertim ei evenisse fatetur, cum, conversis oculis in eorum libros nugis refertos, omnia quæ de cœlorum, siderum, solis et lunæ motibus, qualitatibus affirmabant perfecte scire et intelligere cupiebat. Quæ omnia Faustus, in mathematicis disciplinis nusquam eruditus, cum minime explicare posset, quamadmodum eum confiteri non dupduit;
For after he had appeared sufficiently unskilled in those arts in which he was reputed and vaunted by fame to excel — and which Augustine himself had supposed — Augustine at once began to despair that Faustus could open and unravel those questions in which, considering the fabulous first principles of the Manichaeans, his mind was tossed about all too greatly. He confesses that this happened to him especially when, turning his eyes upon their books stuffed with trifles, he desired to know and understand perfectly all the things which they affirmed concerning the motions and qualities of the heavens, the stars, the sun, and the moon. All these things Faustus, nowhere instructed in the mathematical disciplines, since he could by no means explain — as he did not scruple to confess —
201:85
straightway all Augustine's effort, by which he had resolved to make progress in that sect, once that man was known, utterly collapsed — not so that he might separate himself entirely from them, but as one finding nothing better than that into which he had somehow already plunged. When therefore this perverse desire of Augustine for learning all the Manichaean dogmas and mysteries had cooled, his mind, as though suddenly, began to waver. And although he did not at once acquiesce in or obey the movements of divine grace, nevertheless the hands of the Lord, in the hidden depth of His providence, did not forsake his soul; and, out of the blood of his mother's heart, through her tears offering sacrifice for her son by day and by night, they wrought upon him in wondrous ways.
201:86
Hæc itaque de Fausti gestis, studiorum ratione, scientiarum facultate, divinarum humanamque rerumejus eognitione, hujusque scriptis tradidit Augustinus, in quibus expendendis nos haud diutius immarari 123 possumus, ne Augustini potius, quam hujus Manichæi episcopi gesta pandere velle videamur. Illud unum tandem superaddendum esse arbitramur: Augustinum, videlicet, jam e Manichæorum laqueis solutum, atque ad episcopatus ordinem evectum, contra hunc Faustum stylum strioxisse huncque triginta tribus libris exagitasse ©. Quod sane opus ita ingeniose digessit, ut primo sub istius Fausti nomine verba posuerit, singulis capitibus totidem catholicas responsiones a se ipse conscriptas subjiciendo.
These things, then, concerning the deeds of Faustus, his manner of study, his capacity in the sciences, his knowledge of divine and human things, and his writings, Augustine handed down; in weighing which we cannot linger any longer, lest we seem to wish to display the deeds of Augustine rather than those of this Manichaean bishop. This one thing at last we think must be added: namely, that Augustine, now loosed from the snares of the Manichaeans and raised to the order of the episcopate, drew his pen against this Faustus and harassed him in thirty-three books. This work he arranged so ingeniously that first, under the name of that Faustus, he set down the words, subjoining to each chapter just as many Catholic replies composed by himself.
201:87
Qualem vere finem Faustus ipse subrierit, narrat libro v cap.
What end Faustus himself truly met, Augustine narrates in Book Five, chapter eight, where the holy Father is wholly engaged in reproaching the audacity of the Manichaeans, by which they rashly and sacrilegiously contended that they endured persecutions and the hatreds of men for the sake of justice — when, namely, the proconsuls of Africa, taking action with the rigor of punishments against this wicked sect, and Faustus himself having been convicted, or having confessed, that he was a Manichaean, was banished to an island together with certain others brought with him to the proconsular tribunal. But of this kind of judgment we shall treat more fully and more conveniently in the following chapter.
201:88
It remains now that we should speak of a certain Secundinus, another defender and writer of the Manichaean sect, whom William Cave quite wrongly judged to have been an African by nation. He added moreover that this man had lived after Augustine's return to the Church and after the completion of the three books on Free Will; and that it seemed to him that Secundinus's letter to Augustine, and Augustine's replies to Secundinus, ought to be referred to the year of Christ 390. These two things surely could be affirmed only by a man too boldly divining, and reasoning falsely and from mere caprice about the writers of the Church.
201:89
And first, indeed, as regards his native land, his own writings indicate that Secundinus derived his origin not from the African nation but from the Roman people. For, discoursing about himself, he thus addresses Augustine: For your reverend dignity has read some slight thing and such-as-it-is talent of a Roman man's writings, in which you so rage against the truth as Hortensius against philosophy. Secundinus therefore calls himself a Roman, and appeals to those writings by which Augustine, long since converted to the Catholic faith, had harassed the Manichaeans. Again, that same Augustine addresses this very man as a Roman, thus mocking his talent, of which Secundinus seemed most of all to boast:
201:90
I ask of you, a keen and clever man, and of your Roman talent, as you boast, whence this nature of good has the power to suffer what it suffers, so that it consents to evil. Nor is William Cave's hallucination — or rather drowsiness — any less in defining the time at which either Secundinus assailed Augustine with his writings, or when Augustine, in a work composed against him, refuted all the arguments of that man's letter. For if we are willing to give credence to Prosper, Possidius, and other trustworthy writers, Augustine, having abjured Manichaeism, joined himself to the society of the Catholics in the year 387.
201:91
Si igitur hocce Secundi- num inter et Augustinum litterarum commercium in annos post hujus ad Ecclesiæ reditum rejiciendum esset, ut Guillelmus Cave oscitanter commentus est, jam inde isthæ staret consecutio, videlicet, circa Christi annum 390 ejusmodi scripta fuisse evulgata. Verum laudata consecutio illico caderet, si Secundinus suis in scriptis Augustinum subdole jam veluti episcopatus honerem adeptum vellicaret et impeteret; et Augustinus ipse hujus calumniis occurrens, callido homini se catholicorum episcopatum obtinuisse non dissimularet. At Secundmus revera Augustinum insimulat quod a Manichæo timore quodam et asse- quendi honoris cupiditate allectus defecisset;
If, therefore, this exchange of letters between Secundinus and Augustine were to be thrown back into the years after the latter's return to the Church, as William Cave drowsily surmised, then from that very point this consequence would stand: namely, that around the year of Christ 390 writings of this kind had been published. But that alleged consequence would at once fall to the ground, if Secundinus in his writings had covertly taunted and attacked Augustine as already having attained the honor of the episcopate; and if Augustine himself, meeting the slanders of this man, had not concealed from the crafty fellow that he had obtained the episcopate of the Catholics. But Secundinus in truth accuses Augustine of having defected from the Manichaean, enticed by a certain fear and by desire of attaining honor.
201:92
And throughout his writing he constantly employed those phrases which it was customary to use only toward bishops, namely: your salutary and eminent holiness, O lord deservedly praiseworthy and to be highly honored; or this: yet that I cannot do to your most powerful holiness; or finally this other: although it would be too absurd to say these things to your holiness; and other titles of the same kind, by which bishops alone were then honored. What more? Augustine himself, in meeting Secundinus, affirms that he had already attained the honor of the episcopate.
201:93
Quid vero dintius in his immorabor ? Suorum quidem librorum temporis aliquam rationem nobis Augustinus ipse duobis in Retractationem libris reliquit.
Wherefore (he says) even though you may suspect nothing good of me — that from carnal fear of some inconvenience which might befall me from your society, I abandoned the heresy of the Manichaeans, or from desire of the honor which I attained in the Catholic Church. But why shall I dwell longer on these things? Augustine himself indeed left us some reckoning of the time of his own books in the two books of the Retractations. In reviewing these, since he follows the order of his own life, he retracts the book of which we are speaking among those which he had produced as a bishop. This surely Cave would have known, had he been willing to consult chapter 10 of Book Two of the Retractations, where he expressly mentions this book against Secundinus, as we shall observe hereafter.
201:94
Since therefore Augustine, having already been made a presbyter, did not attain the episcopal dignity until the year 394, it follows that before this time that exchange of letters between them could not have taken place. Yet the Fathers of the congregation of St. Maur, in the latest edition of the works of Augustine, scrutinized this truth more diligently. And, relying at last upon more probable conjectures, they judged that the writings both of Secundinus the Manichaean and of Augustine the Catholic bishop ought to be referred to the year 404 or the following one — which is the tenth or eleventh after Augustine attained the episcopate — writing thus:
201:95
In the Retractations there next follows the work On the Nature of the Good, which is appended to the books against Felix composed at the end of the year 404. This book (Against Secundinus) therefore belongs to about the year 405. Now, having noted the hallucinations of Cave — one of which pertains to the native land of Secundinus the Manichaean, the other to the time of that composed letter — we ought further to describe and forestall a third, which is graver than the rest. For concerning this same Secundinus he wrote thus: A great intimacy had existed between him and Augustine, while both were engaged in the heresy of the Manichaeans. That Cave prattles nonsense no one can be ignorant who consults Augustine.
201:96
Is sane hunc hominem numquam vidisse, citra omnem mendacii labem sincere fassus est, quamvis ambo Romæ quodum Manichaicis laqueis fuissent irretiti.
For he sincerely confessed, without any stain of falsehood, that he had never seen this man, although both had once at Rome been ensnared in the Manichaean snares. For in the praised Book Two of the Retractations, chapter 10, Augustine has these words: A certain Secundinus, not of those whom the Manichaeans call the elect, but of those whom they call hearers, whom we had not even known by face, wrote to me as if a friend, honorably rebuking me for assailing that heresy with my writings, and admonishing me not to do so, and exhorting me rather to follow it, together with a defense of it and a censure of the Catholic faith. Would Cave, if he had expended any labor in inquiring from Augustine into the deeds, native land, character, and companions of Secundinus, have fallen into that opinion?
201:97
Would he, in the last place, have affirmed that a great intimacy had existed between these two men while both were engaged in the heresy of the Manichaeans, when Augustine asserts that he had not even seen that man by face? In the meantime, however, let us pass these things by, and let our discourse rather turn to the epistolary exchange which was carried on between Augustine and Secundinus the Manichaean, examining the arguments of those same letters. And first indeed Secundinus, feigning himself a friend of Augustine, here assails, plucks at, and carps at him with his letters because he had defected from the Manichaean sect. For which cause he imprecates upon Augustine the wrath and indignation of Manes the Persian, to be undergone especially on the day of judgment. Against him he brought two charges of his defection:
201:98
the one arising from fear, by which he feigns that Augustine dreaded all the bodily punishments of this world, unjustly decreed against the Manichaeans, or at times inflicted by the public power; the other arising from desire of honor, laboring under which Augustine had coveted that the rank of the episcopate in the Catholic Church be given to him. Against these calumnies, therefore, Augustine wished to make answer, and elaborated a certain celebrated work which he distributed into twenty-six chapters. And he strives above all to dissolve the two principal calumnies craftily and falsely aimed at him. First, he shows that his defection from the Manichaean sect is to be traced from no other fear than from the words of the Apostle to Timothy, chapter 4, verse 1, namely:
201:99
Spriritus autem manifeste dicit quia in novissimis temporibus discendent quidam a fide, attendentes spiritibus erroris et doctrinis dæmoniorum, quæ in Manichæos quadrare veteribus omnibus abunde fuit persuasum. At ad posteriorem suæ defectionis causam sermonem convertens, eumdem Paulum apostolum ad Romanos interpellat, sequentia verba usurpans: Gloria autem et honor, et pax omni operanti bonum, ut indicaret, videlicet, non a mali opifice quem Manichæi confingebant, sed a summo incommutabilique bono isthæc dona derivari, palam et sine ulla prorsus ambiguitate fatetur. Neque in his dumtaxat duabus refellendis calumniis Augustinus insistit;
聖靈明說,在末後的時期,必有人離棄真道,聽從那迷惑人的邪靈和鬼魔的道理——古代眾人都充分確信這正切合摩尼教徒。但他把話題轉向自己背離的後一項緣由,援引這位保羅使徒致羅馬人的書信,引用以下的話:惟有行善的,卻有榮耀、尊貴、平安——以便明白且毫無任何含糊地指出:這些恩賜並非源自摩尼教徒所虛構的惡之製造者,乃是源自那至高且不變的善。奧古斯丁並不僅止於駁斥這兩項誹謗;
Now the Spirit manifestly says that in the last times certain men shall depart from the faith, giving heed to spirits of error and to doctrines of demons — which all the ancients were abundantly persuaded fitted the Manichaeans. But turning his discourse to the latter cause of his defection, he appeals to the same Apostle Paul to the Romans, employing the following words: But glory and honor and peace to everyone who works good — so as to indicate, plainly and without any ambiguity whatever, that these gifts are derived not from the maker of evil whom the Manichaeans feigned, but from the supreme and unchangeable Good. Nor does Augustine dwell only upon refuting these two calumnies;
201:100
Duos tandem ejusdem nominis viros Augustinus contra Donatistas disputans recensuit; quorum alterum Secundinum a Cedia, alterum Secundinum a Carpis appellavit; qui cum valse diversi sint a Secundino Manichæio, hic annotare debuimus, ne quisquam unum cum alio confundens in errorem incideret.
but bringing forth and pursuing each of the objections which Secundinus had raised from the school of the Manichaeans, with prosperous and happy pace he at length dissolves, rejects, and overturns all and singular the arguments of the adverse party. Finally, Augustine, disputing against the Donatists, recounted two men of the same name, of whom he called the one Secundinus of Cedias, the other Secundinus of Carpi; who, since they are very different from Secundinus the Manichaean, we have had to note here, lest anyone, confounding one with the other, should fall into error. Having written thus far, however, we ought to append the deeds of a certain Felix, a Manichaean presbyter, who held at least two or three public disputations with Augustine.
201:101
Idque in magnum lectoris commodum cessisset, ne huc illucque eum vagari sineremus, pro conspiciendis rebus in Africa Augustini ævo a Manichæis gestis, simulque ut sub unico tantum capite patefaceremus ea quæ in hujus cap. Exordiis pollicebamur. Verum quia istius Manichæi disputatio non ad privatorum hominum contentionem, sed ad publicam catholicæ Ecclesiæ causam pertinere nobis visa est;quia et eo tempore habita quo sacerdotes sæculique judices in Manichæos variis oœnarum generibus animadvertere cœperant;
這本可大大裨益讀者,使我們不必讓他四處遊蕩,就能看見奧古斯丁時代摩尼教徒在非洲所行之事,同時也可在同一章之下,把我們在本章開頭所應許的那些事一併揭示。但由於這位摩尼教徒的辯論在我們看來並不屬於私人之間的爭競,而是關乎大公教會的公共事務;又由於此辯論舉行之時,正值神職人員與世上的審判官開始以各種刑罰對付摩尼教徒之際;
And this would have redounded to the great advantage of the reader, that we might not let him wander hither and thither, for the sake of viewing the things done in Africa in Augustine's age by the Manichaeans, and at the same time that we might lay open, under one single chapter, those things which we had promised in the beginnings of this chapter. But since the disputation of this Manichaean seemed to us to pertain not to the contention of private men but to the public cause of the Catholic Church; and since it was held at that time when the priests and the judges of the world had begun to take action against the Manichaeans with various kinds of penalties;
201:102
quia præterea Felix ipse presbyter post habitas cum Augustino collationes, de errore convictus, ejurata primum nefaria hæresi, omnem labem delere conatus est, catholicorum communioni se consociando, idcirco cum de eo, tum de aliis Africæ potissimum Manichæis publico judicio convictis, qua potermus brevitate opportunius sermonem habebimus. S. Leonis Magni, Celasii, Symmachi atque Hormisdæ Romanorum pontificum agendi ratio in disperdendis atque igne concremandis Manichæorum libris, a notis critici, Beausorbriamis cindicatur.
and since, moreover, Felix the presbyter himself, after the conferences held with Augustine, being convicted of error, first abjured the wicked heresy and endeavored to wipe away all defilement by associating himself with the communion of the Catholics — therefore, concerning both him and other Manichaeans of Africa especially, convicted by public judgment, we shall speak more opportunely with what brevity we can. The manner of acting of St. Leo the Great, Gelasius, Symmachus, and Hormisdas, the Roman pontiffs, in destroying and burning up with fire the books of the Manichaeans, is vindicated against the notes of the critic Beausobre.
201:103
Veterum quoque ethnicorum exemplis ostenditur gravissimum nefas semper judication fuisse, eorum librerum lectionem populo permittere, ex qua in rebus ad religionem perfinentibus etiam leviter a majorum institulis posset resilire. 1.
By the examples also of the ancient heathens it is shown that it was always judged a most grievous crime to permit the people to read those books from which, in matters pertaining to religion, one might depart even slightly from the institutions of the forefathers. Although I am not unaware how greatly that manner of acting of the Roman Church is hateful to certain persons — the manner by which it has perpetually been accustomed to destroy the codices and volumes of non-Catholic men and to burn them up with fire — nevertheless I must not for the present pass over discourse concerning it, having seized the occasion from Beausobre's aim of writing and refining.
201:104
Concerning the four Roman pontiffs who proscribed the reading of the Manichaean books and, with all diligence applied, handed them over to be burned with fire, Beausobre spoke more than once, scattering his various complaints hither and thither — that books of this kind, pertaining to the knowledge of the philosophy and theology of the ancients, had utterly perished, from which those dogmas and systems might be sincerely drawn which were defended by those same heretics. He likewise taxes, plucks at, and carps at this manner of acting as unjust; but imprudently and stupidly. For it greatly ill befits a man of such erudition as he vaunts himself to be, to be ignorant of those things which have obtained at every time and among every religion.
201:105
Primo ergo animadvertat eam relifionem a veribus esse appellatam, quæ superioris cujusdam naturæ, quam divinam vocant, curam cærentoniamque affert.
First, then, let him observe that that is called religion by the ancients which brings care and ceremony for a certain higher nature, which they call divine. That piety and holiness have as their companions those who preside over divine matters and administer the economy of civil affairs, Cicero himself confessed. For upon such men, on account of the preeminence of their office and the authority of their dignities, it necessarily falls to proscribe and forestall all those things which can either undermine the worship of the divine Godhead or lead it to ruin.
201:106
Propterea quidquid ab imperitorum opinionibus ficte in alicujus etiam profanæ religionis detrimentum et labem aliquando excogitabatur, illudque de novo inter res sacras sensim induci curabatur omni nisu quælibet nario a suis ruibus ejecit et exhorruit, variis pœnarum generibus cos etiam coercens, qui, mutatis patriis legibus, res divinas aliter facere aussi essent. 1. Cujus quippe rei, etsi innumera exempla proferre possemis ex Tilo Livio, Romanarum rerum scriptore;
因此,凡在任何時候出於無知者的意見而虛構出來、有損甚至玷污某種褻瀆宗教之事,並被逐漸重新引入聖事之中的,每個民族都竭力將之逐出、避之如避己身的傾覆,並以各種刑罰約束那些膽敢更改祖先律法、以他法行神聖之事的人。關於此事,我們雖能從羅馬史家提圖斯·李維(Titus Livius)舉出無數的例證;
Therefore, whatever was at any time fictitiously devised, out of the opinions of the unlearned, to the detriment and defilement even of some profane religion, and was being anew and gradually introduced among sacred things, every nation with all effort cast out and shrank from as from its own downfall, coercing also with various kinds of penalties those who, the ancestral laws being changed, had dared to perform divine matters otherwise. Of which thing, although we could bring forth countless examples from Titus Livius, the writer of Roman affairs;
201:107
tamenne extra præscriptos concertationis limites vagari videamur, illud unum interun in medium proterimus, quo intelligimus Romanos externæ et novæ religionis inductionem improbasse, eamque tamquam sibi, majoribus et diis pernimiosam abolendam judicasse. Dum ergo, constatum agentibus Q. Fabio, T. Sempronio,cum Annibal videlicet in Tarentimo agro ætatem consumpsit, et quo diutius bellum trahebatur, inter cætera, etiam religionis res variabant, et potissimum ex parte externa, ita ut aut homines, aut dii repente alii viderentur facti. Nec jam in secreto modo, neque intra parietes abolenantur Romani ritus;
Yet, lest we should seem to wander beyond the prescribed bounds of the dispute, we bring forward into the midst this one point, from which we understand that the Romans condemned the introduction of a foreign and novel religion, and judged that it ought to be abolished as most pernicious to themselves, to their forefathers, and to their gods. When therefore, in the consulship of Quintus Fabius and Titus Sempronius — that is, while Hannibal was spending his time in the territory of Tarentum, and the longer the war was drawn out, the more, among other things, matters of religion also began to vary, and chiefly on the side of foreign rites, so that either men or gods seemed suddenly to have become other than they were — Roman rites were now being done away with not only in secret nor within private walls,
201:108
but even in public, in the forum and on the Capitol, there was a throng of women neither sacrificing nor praying to the gods after the ancestral custom. When therefore the evil had grown so gravely and appeared more powerful than could be quelled by the lesser magistrates, the task was given by the Senate to Marcus Atilius, praetor of the City, to free the people from these superstitions. He accordingly both read out the decree of the Senate in the assembly and issued an edict: that whosoever had prophetic books or prayers, or a written art of sacrificing, should bring all those books and writings to him before the first of April, and that no one should sacrifice in a public or sacred place by a new or foreign rite.
201:109
3. That the Roman pontiffs and other pastors, as well as the Christian emperors, brought this zeal to bear for the fortification and defence of the Catholic religion, prompted by a sacred and divine counsel — this Beausobre does not deny. Yet he, taking no account whatever of the manner of acting and the economy of the magistrates and of the ancient heathen princes, has dared with a censorious pen to mark and to carp at whichever of the Catholic Fathers ordered the Manichaean books to be consumed by fire and destroyed.
201:110
This he noted not only in the earlier part of his History, but expounded more fully in the prefatory discourse to the second part, which he begins by affirming and laying down that it is a very difficult thing, or almost impossible, in our day to set forth a just and complete idea pertaining to the philosophy and theology of the Manichaeans, because their written volumes no longer exist. He says afterward that he does not know whether, among the ancients, Leo the Great was the first who ordered the Manichaean books to be destroyed and burned; yet that he knows this man to have been imitated by his successor Gelasius, who commanded these codices to be burned before the church of St. Mary. This custom Pope Symmachus followed a little later. For from Anastasius
201:111
Bibliothecario habemus: Manichœrum omnia simulacra, vel codices, ante fores basilicœ Constantinianœ incendia cremavit.Contendit primo Manichæorum simulacra incendio cremari hand potuisse. Tum quod magi, quorum relifionem Manichari prosequebantur, ex Epiphanio, idola non habebant; tum denique quia Manichæ ignem, solem et lanam colebant, quarum rerum idola haud poterant incendi. Denique conclodit Hormisdam pontificem in horum hæreticorum causa suorum prædecessorum exemptum esse secutum; Ex hactenus descriptis nihil occorit quod videlicet graviter lædat Romanorum præsulum agendi rationem.
the Librarian we have it that he burned in flames all the images of the Manichaeans, or their codices, before the doors of the Constantinian basilica. He contends first that the images of the Manichaeans could not have been consumed by fire; both because the Magi, whose religion the Manichaeans followed, according to Epiphanius, had no idols; and finally because the Manichaeans worshipped fire, the sun and the moon, of which things idols could by no means be burned. Lastly he concludes that Pope Hormisdas, in the case of these heretics, followed the example of his predecessors. From what has been described thus far, nothing occurs that would gravely injure the manner of acting of the Roman prelates.
201:112
We stumble only upon that most feeble assertion by which he contends that Pope Symmachus could not have burned the images of the Manichaeans, because they represented fire, the sun and the moon — as though the same force and nature inhered in such images as exists in the very things represented. For the substance of fire, like that of the sun and moon, cannot be consumed by burning. But who will deny that images of these things, made of wood, of clay, or cast of metal, can indeed be burned?
201:113
4.Post hæc auctor Beausobre sensim se in lectoris animum insinuare quærit;et,eufusdam ignorantiæ prætextu, hinc inde disserit, an antiquorum episcoporum laudari oporteat studium, quo Christianorum imperatorum animus movebatur, ut hæreticorumlibros igni tradendos decernerent, capitissque sententiam contrea cos juberent qui similes libros aut legere qut apud se retinere ausi essent. Quarum legum scopum et funem bonum fuisse sibi persuadet;
四、此後,作者布索布爾漸漸尋求潛入讀者之心;他以某種無知為藉口,四處議論:古代眾主教的熱忱是否當受稱讚——正是這熱忱推動了基督教皇帝們的心志,去頒令將異端的書籍付之一炬,並對凡膽敢閱讀或私藏此類書籍之人宣判死刑。他自認為這些律法的宗旨與目的乃是良善的;
4. After this the author Beausobre seeks gradually to insinuate himself into the reader's mind; and, under the pretext of a certain ignorance, he discusses here and there whether the zeal of the ancient bishops ought to be praised — the zeal by which the minds of the Christian emperors were moved to decree that the books of the heretics should be handed over to the fire, and to pronounce a capital sentence against those who had dared to read such books or to keep them in their possession. He persuades himself that the aim and end of these laws was good;
201:114
but he brands a similar example as very pernicious, condemned even by the Christians themselves as unjust and violent. In order to prove this futile and venom-sprinkled conjecture (which all the smatterers of our age follow), or to add force to it, he appeals to another apology of Justin Martyr, in which he bitterly laments the Roman law passed against those who consulted the Sibylline and Hystaspine books, which the Christians used to confirm their doctrines. But who does not perceive how most just was St.
201:115
martyris Justini querimoniam?
Justin the martyr's complaint was? For the Sibylline books were in use among the heathen. For in undertaking or dispatching difficult matters the Romans themselves used to appeal to these books, that they might draw help from them. Why then, when in the affairs of the empire they placed such trust in the aforesaid books, did they, in hatred of the Christian religion — which those books, obscurely at least, foretold — so blaze up against them as to destroy them? Justin therefore judged that these books could furnish aid even to the heathen themselves, so that they might more easily be led to the name of Christ. Indeed they had such confidence in them, on the authority of your own Livy, that by a decree of the Senate, when no end could be found to a deadly pestilence, the Sibylline books were consulted. Justin's complaint, then, was not in this:
201:116
it was not that sacred monuments apt and fit for confirming the Catholic faith had been destroyed; but that the heathen had deprived themselves of certain aids from which they might have drawn at least some slender light of our Christian faith. Moreover, who could ever affirm that the Sibylline books were either necessary or fit for confirming Catholics in their faith? They were instructed by the Scriptures of both Testaments, they heard the apostolic preaching, they were enlightened by the perpetual proofs of miracles and signs — to say nothing of the supreme care and solicitude of the pastors in instructing the first Christians and strengthening them in the faith. For them, then, there was no need at all to appeal to the Sibylline books.
201:117
But if Justin and others of the ancient Fathers appealed to them in order to press the heathen hard, we judge that this was done only upon a certain supposition. Namely, because they knew that these books had been held in veneration by their forefathers, priests, pontiffs, and magistrates. Therefore Beausobre's argument, drawn from the complaint of Justin the martyr, falls utterly to the ground; and for that reason let us return to the aim of our writing, from which we have digressed a little. And indeed, what usefulness or what sort of aid could Catholics have drawn from the Manichaean books, so that, led by any reasoning, they might have been able to complain of the decrees of the Roman pontiffs? What besides?
201:118
Manichæi ad fidein auctoritatemque suis codicibus vindicandam, falso iisdem gravissima sansctissimaque pietatis nomina imposuere; Evangeliorum videlisei, Husteriorum, Revelationum, Thesaurorum, et simifia; atque ostentantes eos divinam scientiam continere, sacros tamquam canonocosque libros sub apostolorum nominibus inscribebant, apprime intelligentes non posse facile simplices, rudes et incautos homines decipere, nisi venenatamdoctrinam quadam mellis specie prælini rent. Quomodo (ait S.Leo Magnus)facilius decipere simplicespossent, nisi venenata pocuta quodam melle prælinirent; ne usquequaque sentirentur insuavia, quæ essent futura morifera.
The Manichaeans, in order to claim faith and authority for their own codices, falsely imposed upon them the gravest and most holy names of piety — namely, of Gospels, of Mysteries, of Revelations, of Treasures, and the like; and, boasting that these contained divine knowledge, they inscribed them as sacred and canonical books under the names of the apostles, understanding perfectly well that they could not easily deceive simple, rude, and unwary men, unless they first smeared their poisoned doctrine with a certain appearance of honey. "How" (says St. Leo the Great) "could they more easily deceive the simple, unless they smeared the poisoned cups over with a certain honey, so that what was to prove deadly should not be felt to be unpleasant on every side?"
201:119
Therefore, to guard against Catholics imbibing depraved and impure doctrines to the ruin and destruction of the Christian faith, that economy was necessary — namely, that writings of that sort should be utterly taken away and handed over to be consumed by the flames. For that reason he charges St. Turribius, the most vigilant pastor of the Church of Astorga, not only to forbid the reading of copies of such writings — those seed-plots of many falsehoods — but to remove them utterly and to burn them with fire. "Therefore care must be taken" (says Leo the Great himself) "and by priestly diligence it must be especially provided, that the false codices be kept in no use of reading.
201:120
But the apocryphal writings, which under the names of the apostles hold a seed-plot of many falsehoods, are not only to be forbidden, but even utterly to be taken away and consumed by fire." That this decree of St. Leo is fair and just, who does not see? Yet this Beausobre most impudently denies, together with his fellow non-Catholics who over-affect the study of philosophy and of ancient matters; he says therefore that for the present he is unwilling first either to reprehend or to praise this custom, confirmed by so many laws; he adds secondly that certain books are indeed found worthy of the fire. Of which sort are those that corrupt morals, or utterly overturn the foundations both of religion and of human society.
201:121
Quid ? Manichæorum libri non subvertunt omnia nostræ catholicæ fidei mysteria?
But another kind of books, not so pernicious, it would be enough to hide from the people, and not to suppress them altogether, since there are not lacking many prudent men who could draw usefulness from them. If therefore the Manichaean books (Beausobre concludes) are such as they are described, I would dare to affirm that they were committed to the fire most unjustly, since the Catholic faith would have obtained greater benefits by preserving those writings, which were stuffed with ridiculous and obscene fables. Thus reasons Beausobre, adducing certain fabulous sayings of the Manichaeans which we have noted from the earlier Acts of Archelaus. Yet let him be ashamed to have written these things. What? Do the books of the Manichaeans not overthrow all the mysteries of our Catholic faith?
201:122
Quænam enim nostræreligionis dogmata non oppuguarunt, quænam etiam non evertere conati sunt ? Percurrat qpostolorum Synibolum, et dicat an unum fidei nostræarticulum intactum reliquerint ? At hæc præc prætermittamus. Notum enim est, et pervulgatum apud omnes. Manichæos unius Dei existentiam inficiari, veram incarnationem, passionem, mortem, christi Domini resurrectionem rejicere, eucharistiam aliaque sacramenta profanare, de Spiritus sancti adventu commentia sacrilegis labulari ? Quid plurs ? An non Manichæ Scripturas divinitus inspiratas, aut a malo auctore derivari affirmarunt, aut si novum Testamentum acceptarunt, illud non intergrum et perfectum servandum esse dicerunt;
For what doctrines of our religion did they not assail, and what indeed did they not attempt to overthrow? Let one run through the Apostles' Creed, and say whether they left a single article of our faith untouched. But let us pass over these things. For it is well known and widely published among all: that the Manichaeans deny the existence of the one God, reject the true incarnation, passion, death, and resurrection of Christ the Lord, profane the Eucharist and the other sacraments, and prate with sacrilegious fictions about the coming of the Holy Spirit. What more? Did the Manichaeans not affirm that the divinely inspired Scriptures were derived from an evil author; or, if they accepted the New Testament, declare that it must not be preserved whole and perfect,
201:123
but wounded and corrupted it with interpolations, additions, and other false accretions? In a word, there is nothing in the Catholic religion which the Manichaeans have not attempted to weaken and utterly to overthrow. If therefore, on Beausobre's own authority, those books ought to be judged worthy of the fire which overturn the foundations of religion and of human society, then the manner of acting of the Roman pontiffs cannot be censured and reprehended, since the Manichaean books accomplished both.
201:124
Nam præter crimina in religionem patrata, etiam nuptias ety connubia solvebant, ab iisdem abhorrebant, et in nefariis lusuriæ vitiis quæ natura horret se exercitabant.An similia in eorum libris contenta sub nomine scripturarum apostolorum debebant a sacris ministris permitti ? Sacrilegium apage 5. Postremo cumhæ et id genus alia Beausobriana argumenta percurrerem, In cam facile veni suspicionem, auctorem nullam religionem habere, vel extrinsecus tantum profiteri.
For besides the crimes committed against religion, they also dissolved marriages and wedlock, abhorred them, and exercised themselves in the nefarious vices of lust from which nature itself recoils. Ought such things, contained in their books under the name of the writings of the apostles, to have been permitted by the sacred ministers? Away with the sacrilege! 5. Finally, when I ran through these and other arguments of Beausobre's kind, I easily fell into the suspicion that the author held no religion at all, or professed one merely outwardly.
201:125
Q. Petillius, Lucio Petillio dixit, quando videlicet in hujus agro repertæ fuerunt duæ arcæ in quarum aliere sub nomine Numæ Pompilii libri Pytagorici reperti sunt. Vulgata erat opinio qua credehatur Pytagoræ auditorem luisse Numam.
For if he had had inwardly any appearance of piety, he would also have called to mind for himself what veneration, and how great, those writings could procure for themselves which are falsely circulated under the name of forefathers already holding great authority and fame. For nothing more effective could be found than these books for dissolving religions. Quintus Petillius said to Lucius Petillius — namely, when in his field there were found two chests, in one of which were found, under the name of Numa Pompilius, Pythagorean books. There was a common opinion by which it was believed that Numa had been a hearer of Pythagoras.
201:126
At cum ejusmodi libri, Latine et Græce conscripti, Quorum septem primi de jure pontificio erant, septem vero postremi de disciplina sapientiæ quæ illius ætatis esse potuit, eos sane conservare ad illarum facultatum studium consilium non habuerunt; sed, lectis rerum summis, cum animadvertissent pleraque ad religionem dissolvendam ordinari, ipse L. Perillio dixit sese eos libros in ignem conjecturum esse. Nec arbitretur Besusobre privata auctoritate hos libros in ignem conjectos fuisse, sed delata re prius ad prætorem, qui censuit cos libros legi servarique non oportere, deinde ad senstunr, qui siatuit libros primo quoque tempore in comitio cremandos esse;
然而,這類書籍乃以拉丁文與希臘文寫成——其中前七卷論大祭司之法,後七卷則論當時所能有的那種智慧之學問;他們卻無意為研究那些學問而保存之;反倒是,讀了其內容的摘要之後,當他們察覺其中大部分乃是導向瓦解宗教之時,他本人便對盧基烏斯·佩提利烏斯說:他要將那些書投入火中。也不要以為布索布爾所言:這些書乃憑私人權威被投入火中;反倒是此事先呈交裁判官,裁判官判定那些書不當被誦讀或保存,繼而呈交元老院,元老院則裁定那些書應盡早在集會場中焚燒;
But since books of this sort, written in Latin and Greek — of which the first seven were on pontifical law, while the last seven were on the discipline of wisdom such as could belong to that age — they had no design of preserving them for the study of those faculties; but, having read the summaries of their contents, when they had observed that most of them were ordered toward the dissolution of religion, he himself said to Lucius Petillius that he would cast those books into the fire. Nor let Beausobre suppose that these books were cast into the fire by private authority, but the matter was first referred to the praetor, who judged that those books ought not to be read or kept, and then to the Senate, which decreed that the books should be burned in the assembly-place at the first opportunity;
201:127
tandem libri in comilio igne a victimariis facto in conspectum populi cremati sunt.
at length the books were burned in the assembly-place in a fire made by the victimarii, in the sight of the people. It is quite unknown to me whether anyone has thus far existed who has accused or reprehended the praetor Lucius Petillius, or the Senate of the Roman people, as unjust, because books of this sort — most of which had only the force of dissolving religions — were handed over to the fire. This one thing is established to me: that in the public assembly of the Roman people, by the common counsel of all the orders, with the whole people applauding, as the laws of the assemblies required, the aforesaid books were burned by the victimarii, who were public ministers. But I ask Beausobre: were there then among the Romans any who devoted themselves to pontifical law or to philosophy?
201:128
That there necessarily were such, he must confess. Yet it has been recorded that no man of any order whatsoever came forward to complain of the loss of such books. For they were persuaded that religion is not to be weakened by new and foreign rites. For, on Cicero's authority, the worship of the gods is best, and likewise most chaste, most holy, and most full of piety, provided that we always venerate them with a pure, whole, and uncorrupted mind and voice. But to what end will the mind and voice preserve the purity and integrity of the institutions pertaining to sacred matters, if they begin to wander, and to take delight in at least some superstitious and most insolent things?
201:129
In bis wndem omnibus, ecc ethnicorum veterum historiis hactenus desumptis, paulo fnsius nostram orationem versari oportull, ne summa Beausobriana luxuries, in taxando antiquas catholicæ Ecclesiae consuetudines, et in maligno stylo exercendo contra Romanorum pontificum gesta, sine justa objurgatione præterire videremur.
On all these matters, taken thus far from the histories of the ancient heathen, it was fitting that our discourse should dwell a little more fully, lest we should seem to pass over — without a just rebuke — the supreme extravagance of Beausobre in censuring the ancient customs of the Catholic Church, and in exercising his malignant pen against the deeds of the Roman pontiffs. Especially since even the non-Catholic men of this our age, seeing their books proscribed by apostolic authority and burned with fire by public ministers in the sight of the people, babble and complain of an economy as though it were unjust and injurious — an economy nonetheless most holily and religiously employed for guarding the purity and integrity of the Catholic faith.
