58:1
CAP.
CHAPTER I. — Your observance, beloved, we know to be so devout that you cultivate your souls not only with lawful but also with voluntary fastings. Nevertheless, to this zeal there is to be added also the exhortation of our admonition, so that if there are any who are more sluggish in this exercise, they may at least in these days obediently join themselves to the common abstinence, in which it behoves us more attentively to celebrate the most sacred custom, that through the humility of the fast we may merit divine aid against all our enemies. For it is a matter of principal importance, which we both enjoin from authority and persuade from charity:
58:2
ut paululum edendi libertate compressa, castigationi corporum et pauperum studeamus alimonic, 341 quos qui reficit animam suam pascit, et temporales epulas in delicias mutat æternas. CAP. II. — In locum igitur malarum cupiditatum sanctorum desideriorum incrementasuccedant.Cesset iniquitas, sed non sit otiosa justitia. Quem null us patitur opprimentem,sentiat aliquis adj uvantem. Parum est enim non auferre aliena, nisi largiaris et propria. Sub oculis justi judicis sumus, qui novit quantam unicuique bene operandi dederit facultatem. Non vult otiosa esse munera sua, qui servis suis sic mensuras mysticorum distribuit talentorum, ut creditum qui liberaliter erogasset, augeret;
即:稍微約束飲食的自由,使我們得以致力於身體的懲戒與窮人的餵養;因為餵養窮人者,乃是餵養自己的靈魂,並將暫時的筵席化為永恆的喜樂。第二章。——因此,讓聖潔渴望的增長取代邪惡貪慾的地位。讓罪惡止息,但不要讓正義閒懶。願那不遭受任何壓迫者的人,感受到有人施以援手。因為僅僅不奪取他人之物是不夠的,除非你也施捨自己之物。我們是在公義審判者的眼目之下,祂知道賜給每人行善的能力有多大。祂不願自己的恩賜閒置,祂如此將奧秘的塔冷通的分量分配給祂的僕人,好叫祂增加那慷慨支出者所受託之物;
that, the liberty of eating being a little restrained, we may apply ourselves to the chastisement of our bodies and to the nourishment of the poor; for he who refreshes them feeds his own soul, and changes temporal repasts into eternal delights. CHAPTER II. — In place, therefore, of evil desires let the increases of holy longings succeed. Let iniquity cease, but let not justice be idle. Let him who suffers no oppressor feel someone as a helper. For it is too little not to take away what belongs to another, unless you bestow also what is your own. We are under the eyes of the just Judge, who knows how great a faculty of doing good He has given to each. He does not wish His gifts to be idle, who so distributes the measures of the mystical talents to His servants, that He might increase what was entrusted to him who had liberally paid it out;
58:3
qui steriliter servasset, amitteret (Matth. xxv, 28; Luc. xix, 26). Et ideo, dilectissimi, quia septimi mensis jejunium celebrare nos convenit, sanctitatem vestram monemus ut quarta et sexta feria jejunemus; sabbato vero apud beatum Petrum Apostolum pariter vigilemus, cujus suffragantibus meritis ab omnibus tribulationibus mereamur absolvi: per Jesum Christum Dominum nostrum, quivivitetregnat in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
and cause him who had barrenly kept it to lose it (Matt. xxv, 28; Luke xix, 26). And therefore, beloved, because it behoves us to celebrate the fast of the seventh month, we admonish your holiness that we fast on the fourth and sixth day of the week; and on the Sabbath let us likewise keep vigil at the blessed Apostle Peter's, that by his interceding merits we may deserve to be released from all tribulations: through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns unto the ages of ages. Amen.
