152:1
CAp. LChristianissimi principis fidem sæpe evidentissimis probavimus documentis, ac Deo nostro gratias ago, qui talcm dignatus est rebus humanis concedere pro sua pietate rectorem,qni et fidei causas et reipublicæ summa vigilantia tueretur,haereticorum ausibus semper obsistens, et nihil eorum insaniæ adversum catholicam fidem licere permittens;
第一章——我們已多次以最明白的憑證證明了那至為基督徒之君王的信仰,我也感謝我們的神,祂憑自己的良善,樂意賜給人間如此一位治理者,能以最高的警惕守護信仰與國政兩方面的事務,時常抵擋異端者的膽妄,不容他們的瘋狂在任何事上得以合法地與大公信仰為敵;
Chapter 1. — We have often proved the faith of the most Christian prince by the clearest documents, and I give thanks to our God, who has deigned in His own goodness to grant to human affairs such a ruler as would guard with the utmost vigilance both the causes of the faith and of the commonwealth, ever resisting the audacities of heretics and permitting nothing of their madness to be lawful against the catholic faith;
152:2
cujus post Deum beneficiis hoc debctur, quod et Jerosolymitanus episcopus est rcceplus, et inonachos,quos perfidia hæreticæ falsitatis invaserat,ad sanitatem augusta auctoritate revocavit Mox itaque ut accepi epistolas tuas, talia continentes, non solum eadem die, sed 1247 prope eadem hora responsum redderematuravi;utcertior de omnibusquaescripseras reddereris. Fratrem Proterium Alexandrinæ urbis episcopum gratulatorplenassatisfactionisde fide sua ad nos litteras direxisse, et manifestius quid teneat indicasse;
次於神之後,這也當歸功於他的恩惠:耶路撒冷的主教得以復位,且他以其崇高的權威把那些被異端虛謊的背信所侵入的修士召回到健全之信。因此我一收到你載有此類事務的來信,便不僅在當日、甚且幾乎在同一時辰急忙作了回覆,好叫你對所寫的一切都更加確知。至於我們的弟兄、亞歷山大城的主教普洛特里烏斯已向我們寄來充滿其信仰滿意之情的道賀信函,並更明白地表明了他所持守的信仰;
to whose benefits, after God, this is owed, that both the bishop of Jerusalem has been received back, and that by his august authority he has recalled to soundness the monks whom the perfidy of heretical falsehood had invaded. As soon therefore as I received your letters, containing such things, I hastened to give a reply not only on the same day, but almost at the same hour, so that you might be made more certain concerning all that you had written. That our brother Proterius, bishop of the city of Alexandria, has directed to us congratulatory letters, full of the satisfaction of his faith, and has indicated more plainly what he holds;
152:3
cui me dignam gratiamnecesse est pro fidei ipsius sinceritate praestare, ut honorem in nullo suæ perdat Ecclesiæ, sed sedissuasprivilegia, paternae antiquitatis exemplo,juxta canonum illibata jura possideat. CAP. II.
to whom it is necessary that I render worthy thanks for the sincerity of his faith, so that he may in nothing lose the honour of his own Church, but may possess the privileges of his own see, after the example of paternal antiquity, according to the inviolate rights of the canons. Chapter 2. — Concerning the present year's Pascha there could be no doubt for us, but concerning that of the future we have raised the question which Theophilus, bishop of the city of Alexandria, believed should be assigned to the eighth day before the Kalends of May — a day on which it was never so celebrated from the time of the Lord's resurrection. Whence it is more carefully fitting that this be inquired into, so that all occasion of error may be removed. For in our annals the fifteenth day before the Kalends of May is most plainly read to have been both established and celebrated by our Fathers.
152:4
Ac ne vel apud nos vel apud Orientales nascatur ex hac parte diversitns,hoc instantius nostro nominecum Christjanisssimoprincipe agere tua dignetur dilectio: quamvis et ipse clementissimus princeps se inquisitione sollicitissima curam hanc Ægyptiis delegasse, suis epistolis dignatus sit indicare. CAP. III. — Epistolam sane meam ad Chalcedonensem synodum datam praesentibus episcopis et clericis lectam fuisse tuis epistolis retulisti;sed usque ad illud capitulum,quo ea quæ de fide acta sunt meus videtur firmasse consensus. Undewiratus sum quod reliquaquaesecuta fuerunt non pariter in notitiam eorum quibus sunt lecta prolata sint;
為免在這一點上,無論在我們中間或在東方人中間,生出任何分歧,願你愛德惠允以我們的名義,格外急切地就此事與那至為基督徒之君王商議:儘管那位至仁的君王自己也已惠允藉其信函表明,他已以最殷切的查究,將此關切之事委託給埃及人。第三章——你在信中報告說,我寄給迦克墩會議的信函曾當著眾主教與神職人員之面誦讀;但僅讀到那一章,其中我的贊同似乎確認了關於信仰所辦之事。因此我甚為詫異,何以隨後其餘的部分未同樣傳達給那些被誦讀對象的知悉;
And lest on this point any diversity should arise either among us or among the Orientals, let your Charity deign to treat this the more urgently in our name with the most Christian prince: although that most clement prince has himself deigned to indicate by his letters that with most solicitous inquiry he has entrusted this care to the Egyptians. Chapter 3. — You reported in your letters that my letter, sent to the synod of Chalcedon, was read in the presence of the bishops and clergy; but only up to that chapter in which my agreement appears to have confirmed the things done concerning the faith. Whence I was astonished that the remaining things which followed were not brought equally to the knowledge of those to whom they were read;
152:5
since it ought most of all to have become known to all, that a dishonourable ambition had been censured by us, and that new usurpations had been opposed: so that the antiquity which is established by the canons might be preserved inviolate, as we have always written. But concerning the presbyter Actius, whom you assert to have been examined, we rejoice that, an investigation having been held, he was in all things cleared. Know also that I have sent a letter to the most Christian prince, in which I gave him thanks, because he deigned to indicate to me his care, both for the cause of the faith and for the security of the commonwealth.
152:6
He also gave us another letter, interceding on behalf of the bishop Anatolius, that the favour of our goodwill might be extended to him, since he promises his correction, and pledges that in all things he will give satisfaction in what pertains to the observance of the faith. Given the fifth day before the Ides of January, in the consulship of Aetius and Studius, most distinguished men.
