92:1
Since, on account of the cause of the faith which Eutyches attempted to disturb, I was sending from my side those who might assist in the defense of the truth, I believed it fitting that I should also direct writings to your love: whom I hold for certain so to be zealous for piety that you can by no means with equanimity hear blasphemous and impious utterances; there abiding in your hearts that apostolic instruction whereby it is said: 'If anyone shall preach to you a gospel besides that which you have received, let him be anathema' (Galatians 1:9). But the opinion of the aforesaid man, which, as we have learned by the reading of the acts, has been deservedly reprobated, we too decree to be detested: so that if the foolish asserter shall have willed to persist in his depravity, let him have fellowship with those whose error he has followed.
92:2
For deservedly will he become outside the Church of Christ, who denies that human—that is, our—nature is in Christ. But if the same man, by the mercy of God's Spirit corrected, shall acknowledge the impiety of his error, so that with full satisfaction he condemns the things which Catholics execrate, we will that mercy be not denied him, that the Church of the Lord may feel no loss; since he who comes to his senses can be received, and the error alone ought to be excluded.
92:3
But concerning the sacrament of great piety, in which for us, through the incarnation of the Word of God, there is justification and redemption, what is our opinion out of the tradition of the Fathers has now, as I judge, been sufficiently explained in the letters which I sent to my brother Flavian the bishop; so that, through the communication of your prelate, you may know what, according to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, we desire to be fixed in the hearts of all the faithful. Given on the Ides of June, in the consulship of Asturius and Protogenes, most illustrious men.
