139:1
Impletis per misericordiam Dei communibus votis, dignum est fraternitatem vestram sanctorum gaudiorum habere consortium. Nam fratres mei, qui vice mea Orientali II.. synodo praesederunt, que acta retulerintsignifico, confirmata catholica fide et glorificato apostolicae praedicationis triumpho: quod etiam hi qui ad deviandum vel seducti fuerant vel impulsi, recepta veritatis luce laetanlur. Siquidem omnes Domini sacerdotes in unam sententiam, sancto Spiritu docente, consensere;
藉上帝的憐憫,共同的心願既已成就,閣下弟兄之情理當在這聖潔的喜樂中有分。因為我要表明我的弟兄們——他們代我主持了東方的會議——所報告的行事:即大公信仰已得堅立,使徒宣講的凱旋已得榮耀;並且連那些曾被引誘或被驅使而走入歧途的人,如今既領受了真理之光,也都歡欣。因為主的眾司祭確實蒙聖靈教導,都同歸於一個判斷;
The common vows having been fulfilled through the mercy of God, it is fitting that your brotherhood should have fellowship in the holy joys. For I signify what acts my brethren, who presided in my place over the Eastern synod, have reported: that the catholic faith has been confirmed and the triumph of the apostolic preaching glorified; and that even those who had either been seduced or driven to go astray now rejoice, the light of truth having been received. Since indeed all the priests of the Lord, taught by the Holy Spirit, consented into one judgment;
139:2
and concerning the mystery of the Lord's Incarnation, in which the understanding of many was darkened, the darkness of error was so taken away, that in our one Lord, true Son both of God and of man, there is no doubt either concerning the nature of His humanity or concerning the essence of His Deity. But against the impious authors of the abominable error, who, judging themselves unworthy of God's grace, were unwilling to use the remedies of correction, what sentence has been passed the copies which we have sent will make plain: that your love, most dear brethren, may recognize that in the holy examination the divine judgment was not wanting, whereby both vengeance was rendered to the hardened, and peace bestowed upon the corrected. May the Lord keep you unharmed, most dear brethren.
139:3
Paschasinus episcopus Lilybætanus, Lucentius episcopus Asculanus, et Bonifacius presbyterEcclesiæ maximae urbis Romæ, vicarii sanctissimiacbeatissimi papae Leonis apostolicae sedis antistitis, pronuntiaverunt. Manifesta sunt quae Dioscorus Alexandrinae urbis antistes contracanonumdisciplinam regulasqueecclesiasticas, illicita praesumptione commisit, sicut præterita gestorum,seu praesens declaravit assertio. Is namque, ut plura relinquamus, Eutychen consortem perfidiæ suae, a proprio episcopo sanctae recordationis Flaviano jure damnatum,in gratiam communionis, antequam cum his qui congregati fuerant in Ephesina urbe episcopis resideret, suscepisse cognoscitur.
Paschasinus bishop of Lilybaeum, Lucentius bishop of Ausculum, and Boniface presbyter of the Church of the greatest city of Rome, vicars of the most holy and most blessed pope Leo, prelate of the apostolic see, pronounced: Manifest are the things which Dioscorus, prelate of the city of Alexandria, committed against the discipline of the canons and the ecclesiastical rules, by unlawful presumption, as both the past record of the acts and the present assertion have declared. For he—to leave aside much—is known to have received into the fellowship of communion Eutyches, the partner of his perfidy, justly condemned by his own bishop Flavian of holy memory, before he sat together with the bishops who had been gathered in the city of Ephesus.
139:4
But to those men indeed the apostolic see grants pardon, because what was done against their will is now approved; so that even up to now they cleave both to the most blessed pope and to the universal and holy council: for which reason they have obtained the medicine of the sacrosanct communion. But the aforesaid man, who deems himself adorned by the perseverance in evils, whereas he ought, with lowered brow, to be bowed down to the very ground with groaning, as is fitting—since he did not even permit the letter of the most blessed pope, written to Flavian bishop of Christ of venerable memory, to be read: for although he was asked by those who had brought it that he would allow it to be read, he despised to fulfill by the satisfaction of an oath what he had promised—
139:5
so that the impiety of the depraved dogma might be increased, and an occasion of injury or scandal be generated for all the Churches. Yet, though these crimes had been perpetrated, we wished to be indulgent toward these his wickednesses, and worthily to bestow the pardon which we granted to the other bishops, since they are not found to have had a like boldness in judging. Moreover, the supplication of the accusers, filled with various charges, added: and being summoned a third time through our most reverend brethren and fellow bishops by canonical admonition, he despised to come, held back by the secret of his conscience. And receiving, by unjust usurpation, bishops justly condemned by the provincial synod to which they were subject, he himself provoked the sentence of condemnation against himself, trampling underfoot the ordinances so often established by the ancient Fathers.
139:6
Unde sanctus ac beatissimus papa caput universaiifl Ecclesis Leo,per nos vicarios suos, sancta synodo consentiente,Petri apostoli præditus dignitate,qui Ecclesiæ fundamen et petra fidei, coelestis regni janitor nuncupatur,episcopali eum dignitate nudavit, et ab omni sacerdotali opere facit extorrem. Superest uti congregata venerabilis synodus canonicam contra prædiotum Dioscorum proferatjustitiasuadentesententiam.
Wherefore the holy and most blessed pope, head of the universal Church, Leo, through us his vicars, with the holy synod consenting, endowed with the dignity of the apostle Peter—who is called the foundation of the Church and the rock of faith, and the doorkeeper of the heavenly kingdom—has stripped him of the episcopal dignity, and has made him an outcast from all priestly office. It remains that the venerable synod, gathered together, should bring forth, in accordance with justice, a canonical sentence against the aforesaid Dioscorus.
